The windshield wiper and washer can be operated with the ignition switch or the oper- ation mode is in ON or ACC.If the blades are frozen to the windshield, do not operate the wipers until the ice has melted and the blades are freed, otherwise the wipermotor may be damaged.
With the lever in the “INT” (speed sensitive intermittent operation) position, the intermit- tent intervals can be adjusted by turning the knob (A).

The misting function can be used when the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON or ACC. The wipers will operate once if the wiper lever is raised to the “MIST” position andreleased. This operation is useful when it is drizzling, etc. The wipers will continue to operate while the lever is held in the “MIST”position.
The windshield wipers can be operated with the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON or ACC.If the blades are frozen to the windshield or rear window, do not operate the wipers until the ice has melted and the blades are freed,otherwise the wiper motor may be damaged.
Can only be used when the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON. If the lever is put in the “AUTO” position, the rain sensor (A) will detect the extent of rain (or snow, other moisture, dust, etc.) and thewipers will operate automatically. Keep the lever in the “OFF” position if the windshield is dirty and the weather is dry.Wiper operation under these conditions canscratch the windshield and damage the wip- ers.

The rear window defogger can be used when the engine is running.The indicator light (A) will come on when you press the electric rear window defogger switch. Electric current will flow through theheating wires on the rear window to help clear away moisture or frost. After approximately 15 to 20 minutes of operation, the system will shut off automati- cally. To switch the defogger OFF before 15 to20 minutes have passed, press the switch again. The indicator light will go out and the defogger will turn off.
If you need the defogger for more than 15 to 20 minutes, press the switch again. This will add 15 to 20 more minutes.
NOTE
 Do not use the wipers when the windshield is dry. This could scratch the glass and wear the wiper blades prematurely.  Before using the wipers in cold weather, check to be sure that the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield or rear window. Using the wipers while the blades are frozencould cause the wiper motor to burn out.  If the moving wipers become blocked part- way through a sweep by ice or other deposits on the glass, the wipers may temporarily stop operating to prevent the motor from over-heating. In this case, park the vehicle in a safe place, turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position or put the operation mode inOFF, and then remove the ice or other depos- its. Because the wipers will start operating againafter the wiper motor cools down, check that the wipers operate before using them.  Avoid using the washer for more than 20 sec- onds at a time. Do not operate the washer when the washer fluid reservoir is empty orthe pump may fail.  During cold weather, add a recommended washer solution that will not freeze in the washer fluid reservoir. Otherwise the washer may not work or may be damaged.  Replace the wiper blades when they are worn. Use the proper size replacement blades. Electric rear window defog- ger switch
CAUTION The rear window defogger is not designed to melt snow. Remove any snow manually before using the rear window defogger. Use the rear window defogger only after the engine has started and is running. Be sure to turn the defogger switch off immediatelyafter the window is clear to save on battery power. Do not place stickers, tape, or other items that are attached with adhesive over the grid wires on the rear window. When cleaning the inside rear window, use a soft cloth and wipe lightly over the gridwires.NOTE
 The mist can also be removed from the out- side rearview mirrors when the rear windowdefogger switch is pressed. (Refer to “Door mirror heater” on page 5-57.)

The heated steering wheel can be operated when the ignition switch or operation mode is in ON. To turn on the heated steering wheel, push the heated steering wheel switch. The heatedsteering wheel will operate for approximately 30 minutes and then it will automatically turn off.The indicator light (A) will illuminate while the heated steering wheel is operating.
 It is possible to change the setting to make the rear window defogger operate automati- cally when ambient temperature becomes low while the engine is running, even if you do not push the rear window defoggerswitch. It operates automatically only once after turning the ignition switch to the “ON” posi-tion or putting the operation mode in ON. If you choose this setting, the door mirror heater will also operate automatically at thesame time. For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always check for the following:  Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly (with children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors and the liftgate are locked.  Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while keeping good visibility, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls. Checkthe instrument panel indicators and multi- information display for any possible prob- lem. Similarly, the front passenger seat should also be moved as far back as possible.  Make sure that infants and small children are properly restrained in accordance with all laws and regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode, and set the blower switch on high. You shouldbe able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. Refer to “Defrosting or defogging (wind-shield, door windows)” on page 7-13, 7-22. Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails,glass, or other objects stuck in the tread. Look for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Check the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires(including spare tire) for proper pressure. Replace your tires before they are heavily worn out.As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk of damage to the tire inflation pressure sensorswhen the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, only, be performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turn
signal indicators and high-beam indicators on the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for fuel, water, oil, or other leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are correct. Also, if you can smell fuel, you needto find out why immediately and have itfixed.

Your vehicle will need service more often when you’re towing a trailer. Refer to “WAR- RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN- UAL”. Especially important in traileroperation are automatic transaxle fluid, engine oil, rear axle oil, belt, cooling system and brake system. Each of these is covered inthis manual.For details, please refer to the “Vehicle care and maintenance” section. Check periodically to see that all hitch nutsand bolts are tight. Mitsubishi Motors recommends that any trailer having a total weight of 1,250 lb (567 kg) or more be equipped with its own electric or surge-type brakes. If you choose electric brakes, be sure they are electrically actuated. Do not attempt to tap into your vehicle’s hydraulic system. No mat- ter how successful it may seem, any attemptto attach trailer brakes to your vehicle’s hydraulic system will lower braking effec- tiveness and create a potential hazard.
Trailer lights and equipment must comply with federal, state, and local regulations.Check with your local recreational vehicle dealer for the requirements in your area, and use only equipment designed for your vehi-cle. Since lighting and wiring vary by trailer type and brand, you should have a qualified tech- nician install a suitable connector between the vehicle and the trailer. Improper equipment orinstallation can cause damage to your vehi- cle’s electrical system and affect your vehicle warranty. Many states and Canadian provinces require special outside mirrors when towing a trailer.Even if not required, you should install spe- cial mirrors if you cannot clearly see behind you, or if the trailer creates a blind spot. Ask your trailer sales or rental agency if any other items are recommended or required for your towing situation.

WA R N I N G If you have a rear window open and you tow a trailer with your vehicle, carbon monoxide gas which you cannot see or smell could come into your vehicle. It cancause unconsciousness or death. Refer to “Exhaust system” on page 9-22. To maximize your safety when towing atrailer:• Have your exhaust system inspected forleaks, and make necessary repairs before starting on your trip.• Keep the rear windows closed.• If exhaust does come into your vehicle through a window or another opening, drive with your front, main heating or cooling system on and with the blower onany speed. This will bring fresh, outside air into your vehicle. Do not use recircu- lation because it only recirculates the airinside your vehicle. Refer to “Air selec- tion switch” on page 7-9.

1. Park the vehicle in the shade whenever possible. Parking in the hot sun makes thevehicle interior extremely hot which then requires more time to cool. If it is neces- sary to park in the sun, open the windowsfor the first few minutes of air condition- ing to expel the hot air. 2. Afterwards, keep the windows closedwhen the air conditioner is in use. The entry of outside air through open windows will reduce cooling efficiency.3. When running the air conditioner, make sure the air intake, which is located in front of the windshield, is free of obstruc-tions such as leaves. Leaves collected in the air-intake chamber may reduce air flow and plug the water drains.
If the air conditioner seems less effective than usual, the cause might be a refrigerant leak. Have the system inspected by your authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
The air conditioner should be operated for at least five minutes each week, even in coldweather. This includes the quick defrosting mode. Operating the air conditioning system weekly maintains lubrication of the compres-sor internal parts to keep the air conditioner in the best operating condition.

CAUTION The engine speed may increase when the air conditioner is operating. With increased engine speed, a CVT equipped vehicle will creep to a greaterdegree than with a lower engine speed. Fully depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehi- cle from creeping.
Air conditioning system refrig- erant and lubricant recommen- dations
CAUTION The air conditioning system in your vehicle must be charged with the refrigerant HFO- 1234yf and the lubricant PAG46A. Use of any other refrigerant or lubricant willcause severe damage and may require replac- ing your vehicle’s entire air conditioning system.The release of refrigerant into the atmo- sphere is not recommended. The new refrigerant HFO-1234yf in yourvehicle is designed not to harm the earth’s ozone layer. However, it may contribute slightly to global warming.It is recommended that the old refrigerant be saved and recycled for future use.
