The main purpose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations, such as an airbag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in under-standing how a vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for ashort period of time, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as:  How various systems in your vehicle were operating; Whether or not the driver and front pas- senger safety belts were buckled/fastened;  How far (if at all) the driver was depress- ing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,  How fast the vehicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better under- standing of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur.
To read data recorded by an EDR, special equipment is required, and access to the vehi-cle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as law enforcement, that have the special equip-ment, can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.

The driver’s seat position sensor is attachedto the seat rail and provides the airbag control unit with information on the seat’s fore-aftposition. The airbag control unit controls deployment of the driver’s front airbag in accordance with the information it receivesfrom this sensor. pant on the front passenger’s seat or a child in a child restraint system. In this case, the pas-senger airbag off indicator will come on. Refer to “Front seats” on page 4-3.• Do not recline the seatback more thannecessary.• Never have more than one person (adultor child) sitting on the seat.• Do not place anything between the seatand the floor console.• When attaching a child restraint system,secure it firmly.• Do not place luggage or other objects onthe seat.• Do not use a seat cover or a cushion.• Do not modify or replace the seat and seat belt.• Do not place luggage or other objectsunder the seat.• Do not place and use an electronic device such as a computer on the seat.• Do not place heavy objects on the seat orstick pins, needles, or other objects into it.• Do not remove the seat cushion skin.WA R N I N G
• If any liquid is spilled on the seat, wipe it and dry the seat immediately.

There is a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning light on the instrument panel. The system checks itself every time the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON. The SRSwarning light will come on for several sec- onds and then go out. This is normal and means the system is working properly.If there is a problem involving one or more of the SRS components, the warning light will
come on and stay on. At the same time, the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. The SRS warning light/display is shared bythe SRS airbag and the seat belt pre-tensioner system.
WA R N I N G If any of the following conditions occur, you should immediately have the airbagsystem in your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon as possible:• The passenger’s airbag off indicatorcomes on when an adult is sitting on thefront passenger seat.• The passenger’s airbag off indicator doesnot come on when the front passenger seat is not occupied.• The passenger’s airbag off indicator doesnot come on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the oper-ation mode is put in ON.• The passenger’s airbag off indicator does not come on when a child is in a child restraint system on the front passenger’sseat.• The passenger’s airbag off indicatorcomes on and goes out repeatedly.
 Do not attach any accessory to your vehi- cle that makes the passenger’s airbag off indicator difficult or impossible to see. You must be able to see the passenger’s airbag off indicator and verify the statusof the passenger’s airbag system.

The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are designed to deploy when the vehicle suffers a moderate to severe frontal impact. A typical condition is shown in the illustration to theleft. The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are designed to deploy only in certain moderate to severe frontal collisions within the shadedarea between the arrows in the illustration to the right.
The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag will deploy if the impact to the vehicle’s main structure is above a specific threshold level. The threshold level is approximately 15 mph(25 km/h) for a frontal collision straight into a solid flat wall that does not bend or deform. If the impact to the vehicle’s main structure isbelow this threshold level, the front airbags and driver’s knee airbag
may not deploy. This
threshold level may also be higher if the vehi-cle hits something that absorbs the impact,either by bending or moving (for example,
another stationary vehicle, a pole or a guard rail). The initial stage of airbag inflation is the most forceful, and can cause serious injury ordeath if you are too close to the deploying air- bag. Accordingly, it is important that you always wear the available seat belt.

When a person enters the operating range ofthe F.A.S.T.-key while carrying the F.A.S.T.- key and presses the driver’s or front passen-ger’s door lock/unlock switch, the liftgate lock switch or the liftgate open switch, verifi- cation of the ID code is performed.The doors and the liftgate can be locked and unlocked and the engine can be started only when the ID codes of the vehicle andF.A.S.T.-key match.
The operating range is within approximately 2.3 feet (70 cm) of the driver’s and front pas- senger’s door lock/unlock switches, the lift- gate lock switch and the liftgate open switch.
NOTE
 The F.A.S.T.-key uses weak electromagnetic waves. In cases such as the following, operation may be improper or unstable. • The vehicle is near a facility that emits strong electromagnetic waves, such as a TVtransmitting tower, a power station, a radio station or an airport • The key is carried together with other com- munication devices such as cellular phones or radios, or electrical appliances such ascomputers • The F.A.S.T.-key touches or is covered by a metal object • A keyless entry system is being used nearby • The battery of the F.A.S.T.-key is run down • The vehicle is in a location with strong electromagnetic waves or noise
Use the emergency key in such circum- stances. Refer to “To operate without using the F.A.S.T.-key” on page 5-26.  The F.A.S.T.-key is constantly performing reception operations in its communication with the vehicle. This means that the batteryis always running down, regardless of how often the F.A.S.T.-key is used. The battery life is approximately 1 to 2 years, dependingon the usage conditions.  Since the F.A.S.T.-key is constantly perform- ing reception operations, the reception of strong electromagnetic waves can accelerate the running down of the battery. Do not placenear to electrical appliances such as televi- sions or computers.

 A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolanttemperature display starts to move. Refer to “Engine coolant temperature display” on page 5-147.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This system automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accel-erator pedal when starting the engine.
To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.3. Press and hold the brake pedal down firmly with your right foot. 4. Make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 5. Press the engine switch. 6. Confirm that all warning lights and warn- ing displays are functioning properly.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rearwindow defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold itthere, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is neededto move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine
at high rpms or drive
at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up.

NOTE
 After the engine has not started for a while, the brake pedal effort needed to start the engine may become greater. If this occurs,depress the brake pedal more firmly than usual.NOTE
 The engine can only be started when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.For safety reasons, the engine should be started when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position in which the driving wheels lock.
NOTE
 Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warms up.

When the Electric parking brake is applied, the brake warning light (red) in the instru- ment cluster and the indicator light (A) on the Electric parking brake switch will come on. When parking on a hill, set the parking brake, and turn the front wheels toward the curb on a downhill, or away from the curb on an uphill.
NOTE
 You may hear an operation noise from the vehicle body when operating the Electric parking brake. This does not indicate a mal- function and the Electric parking brake is operating normally.  When the battery is weak or dead, the Elec- tric parking brake cannot be applied orreleased. Refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2.  You may feel the brake pedal moving when operating the Electric parking brake. This does not indicate a malfunction.
To apply

1. Stop the vehicle completely. 2. Pull up the Electric parking brake switch
while depressing the brake pedal.
CAUTION While the vehicle is in motion, do not apply the Electric parking brake. Doing so may cause overheating and/or premature wear of brake parts, reducing brake performance. NOTE
 In the following conditions, the brake warn- ing light (red) will illuminate for approxi- mately 15 seconds and then go off. • While the Electric parking brake is applied, the ignition switch is turned to the “OFF”position or the operation mode is put in OFF. • While the ignition switch is in the “OFF” position or the operation mode is in OFF, the Electric parking brake switch is pulled up.
 If the Electric parking brake must be applied in an emergency situation, pull and hold the Electric parking brake switch to apply the Electric parking brake. At that time, the fol- lowing warning display will appear in themulti-information display and a buzzer will sound, however you should continue to pull and hold the Electric parking brake switch.  While the Electric parking brake is applied, the ignition switch is turned to the “OFF” position or the operation mode is put in OFF.  The ignition switch is in the “OFF” position or the operation mode is in OFF.  When the Electric parking brake switch is operated in the following conditions, thebrake warning light (red) will illuminate for approximately 15 seconds and then go off.  When parking on steep grades, pull up the Electric parking brake switch twice (once more after the operation is completed once).The maximum effect of the parking brake will be obtained.  If the parking brake does not hold the vehicle stationary after the foot brake is released,contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.NOTE

When the accelerator pedal is depressed slowly while all of the following conditionsare met, the Electric parking brake is auto- matically released.  The engine is running.  The selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) or the “R” (REVERSE) position.  The driver’s seat belt is fastened.
When the Electric parking brake is released, the brake warning light (red) and the indicator light on the Electric parking brake switch go off. Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is released and brake warning light is off.
 When the ignition switch or the operation mode is other than ON, if the parking brake is applied, the Electric parking brake indica- tor light comes on for a while.  If the Electric parking brake switch is repeat- edly operated in a short time, the following warning display will appear in the multi-information display and the Electric parking brake will temporarily stop working. In such case, wait for approximately 1 minute untilthe warning display disappears, and operate the Electric parking brake switch again.  The brake warning light (red) and the indica- tor light on the Electric parking brake switch may blink. This does not indicate a malfunc- tion, the lights go off when/if the Electricparking brake is released.  Depending on the situation, the Electric parking brake may be applied automatically. Refer to “Brake auto hold” on page 5-74.NOTE

Manual operation 1. Make sure that the ignition switch is in
the “ON” position or the operation mode is ON.
2. Press down the Electric parking brake
switch while depressing the brake pedal.
Automatic operation
CAUTION After the Electric parking brake switch has been operated to apply or release the Electric parking brake, if the brake warning light(red) and the indicator light on the Electric parking brake switch remain blinking or the Electric parking brake warning light (yellow)remain illuminated, the Electric parking brake system may be malfunctioning and the parking brake may not be applied orreleased. Immediately park your vehicle in a safe place and contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facilityof your choice. If a vehicle is driven without releasing the parking brake, the brake will overheat, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure. If the brake warning light (red) does not go off after the parking brake has been released, the brake system may be malfunctioning. Contact the nearest authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
