M/T, put the operation
mode in ACC or ON.

3.If the engine still will not start, the en-
gine could be flooded with too much petrol. While depressing the brake pedal
(CVT ) or the clutch pedal ( M/T), push
the accelerator pedal all the way down
and hold it there, then press the engine
switch to crank the engine. If the engine does not start after 5 to 6 seconds, push
the engine switch to stop cranking the
engine, and release the accelerator pedal. Put the operation mode in OFF. Wait a few seconds, and then press the engine
switch to crank the engine again while
depressing the brake pedal ( CVT) or the
clutch pedal ( M/T), but do not push the
accelerator pedal. If the engine fails to
start, repeat these procedures. If the en-
gine still will not start, we recommend you to have the vehicle checked.Starting the engine (diesel-pow-
ered vehicles)
E00308601146
1. Fasten the seat belt.
2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal down
firmly with your right foot.
NOTEl After the engine has not started for a while,
the brake pedal effort needed to start the en- gine may become greater.
If this occurs, depress the brake pedal more
firmly than usual.
4. Fully depress and hold the clutch pedal
(M/T).
5. On vehicles equipped with M/T, place
the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral)
position.
On vehicles equipped with A/T, make
sure the selector lever is in the “P”
(Park) position.
6. Press the engine switch. The diesel preheat indication lamp willfirst illuminate, and then after a short
time go out, indicating that preheating is completed. The engine will start.
NOTEl If the engine is cold, the diesel preheat indi-
cation lamp is on for a longer time.
l Putting the operation mode in ON will also
start preheating the engine. When the engine
has not been started within about 5 seconds after the diesel preheat indication lamp went
out, put the operation mode in OFF. Then, attempt the engine start procedure to preheatthe engine again.
l Minor noises may be heard on engine start-
up. These will disappear as the engine
warms up.Stopping the engine
E00312601118WARNINGl Do not operate the engine switch while
driving except in an emergency. If the en- gine is stopped while driving, the brakeservomechanism will cease to function
and braking efficiency will deteriorate. Also, the power steering system will notfunction and it will require greater man-
ual effort to operate the steering. This
could result in a serious accident.

Seat adjustmentE00400302073
Adjust the driver’s seat so that you are com- fortable and that you can reach the pedals,
steering wheel, switches etc. while retaining a clear field of vision.WARNINGl Do not attempt to adjust the seat while
driving. This can cause loss of vehicle con- trol and result in an accident. After ad-
justments are made, ensure the seating is locked in position by attempting to move
the seat forward and rearward without
using the adjusting mechanism.
l Do not let children or adults ride in areas
of the vehicle that are not equipped with seats or seat belts. Also, make sure that all
occupants are sitting in their seats and wearing their seat belts, and that children
are sitting in child restraints.
l To minimize the risk of personal injury in
the event of a collision or sudden braking, the seatbacks should always be in the al-
most upright position while the vehicle is in motion. The protection provided by theseat belts may be reduced significantly
when the seatback is reclined. There is greater risk that the passenger will slide
under the seat belt, resulting in serious in- jury, when the seatback is reclined.WARNINGl Do not place objects under the seats. This
could prevent the seat from locking se-curely, and it could lead to an accident. It
may also cause damage to the seat or oth-
er parts.CAUTIONl Make sure the seat is adjusted by an adult or
with adult supervision for correct and safe operation.
l Do not place a cushion or the like between
your back and the seatback while driving. The effectiveness of the head restraints will
be reduced in the event of an accident.
l When sliding the seat rearward, be careful
not to catch your hand or foot.Front seat

The airbags deflate very rapidly after deploy-
ment, so there is little danger of obscured vi- sion.CAUTIONl Airbags inflate at an extremely rapid speed.
In certain situations, contact with inflating airbags can result in abrasions, bruises, and the like.WARNINGl IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BE
PROPERLY SEATED.
A driver or front passenger too close to the steering wheel or instrument panel
during airbag deployment can be killed or seriously injured.
Airbags inflate very fast, and with great force.
If the driver and front passenger are not
properly seated and restrained, the air-
bags may not protect you properly, and could cause serious or fatal injuries whenit inflates.
l Do not sit on the edge of the seat or sit
with your lower legs too close to the in-
strument panel, or lean head or chest close to the steering wheel or instrument panel. Do not put feet or legs on or againstthe instrument panel.WARNINGl Place all infants and small children in the
rear seat and properly restrained using an
appropriate child restraint system.
The rear seat is the safest place for infants
and children.WARNINGl Infants and small children should never
be unrestrained, stand up against the in-strument panel or be held in your arms or on your lap. They could be seriously in-jured or killed in a collision, including when the airbag inflates. They should be
properly seated in the rear seat in an ap- propriate child restraint system. See the
“Child restraint” section of this owner’s
manual.
Use rearward facing child restraints in the
rear seat or turn off the front passenger’s air- bag ON-OFF switch (if so equipped). (Refer
to “To turn an airbag off” on page 4-28)
