If yo u lea vechildren unaccompanied in the
ve hicle, they may be able toset theve hicle in
motion, forex ample by:
RRe leasing the parking brake.
RShifting the transmission out of park
position j.
RStarting the engine.
In addition, they may operate vehicle equip‐
ment.
#Ne ver lea vechildren and animals unat‐
te nded in theve hicle.
#When leaving theve hicle, alw aysta ke
th e SmartK eywith you and lock the
ve hicle.
The electric parking brake is applied if the trans‐
mission is in position jand one of thefo llow‐
ing conditions is fulfilled:
RThe engine is switched off.
RThe seat belt tongue is not inser ted in the
seat belt buckle of the driver's seat and the
driver's door is opened.
% Toprev ent application: pull the handle of the
electric parking brake.
In thefo llowing situations, the electric parking
brake is also engaged:
RDis tance‑Pil otDISTRONIC brings theve hicle
to ast andstill.
RThe HOLD function is keeping theve hicle sta‐
tionar y.
RParking Pilot is keeping theve hicle station‐
ar y.
This is only the case if one of thefo llowing con‐
ditions is also fulfilled:
RThe engine is switched off.
RThe seat belt tongue is not inser ted in the
seat belt buckle of the driver's seat and the
driver's door is opened.
RThere is a sy stem malfunction.
RThe po wer supply is insuf ficient.
RThe vehicle is stationary for a lengt hyperiod.
When the electric parking brake is applied, the
F (USA) or !(Canada) indicator lamp
lights up in the instrument clus ter.
The electric parking brake is not automatically
applied if the engine is switched off bythe ECO
st art/ stop function.
Re leasing the electric pa rking brake auto‐
matically
The elect ric park ing brake is released when the
fo llowing condit
ions are fulfilled:
RThe engine is
running.
RThe seat belt tongue is inser ted into the seat
belt buckle of the driver's seat.
RThe transmission is in position hork and
yo u depress the accelera tor pedal or you

Dis tance Pilot DISTRONIC:
RMaintains the set speed and accelerates or
decelerates theve hicle if the dis tance from
th eve hicle in front permits.
RAssists youin main taining the dis tance from
th eve hicle in front and can bring your vehi‐
cle toast andstill if necessar y.
RBrakesyour vehicle with up to50 % of the
maximum possible braking po wer.If greater
decelera tion performance is requ ired, a vis‐
ual and acoustic warning is given and you
must then inter vene yourself.
RVe hicles with Driving Assistance Pack‐
age, Parking Pilot and COMAND: When
driving in stop-s tart traf fic, the driver is sup‐
por tedby an extended, au tomatic restart in
traf fic jams.
RVe hicles with Driving Assistance Pack‐
age: Responds in urban speed ranges tosta‐
tionary vehicles (e xcept bicycles, mo torcy‐
cle sand pede strians) if conditions are suf fi‐
cient toenable de tection.
If yo ufa ilto adapt your driving style, Dis tance
Pilot DISTRONIC can nei ther reduce therisk of
an accident nor override the la wsof ph ysics.
Dis tance Pilot DISTRONIC cannot take into
account road, weather or traf fic conditions. Dis‐
ta nce Pilot DISTRONIC is only an aid. You are

front, forve hicle speed, for bra

king in good time
and forst ay ing in lane. If all activation conditions are met,
you can acti‐
va te Dis tan ce Pil otDISTRONIC du ring a journ ey
or while stationar y.When Dis tance Pilot
DISTRONIC is acti vated, a speed is stored which
th e driver can increase or reduce at any time.
The speed can be adjus ted between 15mp h
(20 km/h) and 120mp h(2 00 km/h).
Ve hicles with the Driving Assistance Pack‐
age: The speed can be adju sted between
15 mp h (20 km/h) and 130mp h (2 10km/h).
Ve hicles with Driving Assistance Package,
Park ing Pilot and COMAND: Upto30 seconds
af te rst opping, theve hicle automatically follo ws
th eve hicle ahead without the inter vention of the
driver. This is only possible if theve hicle is tr av‐
eling on a free wayor ahigh-speed majo rro ad. If
an obstacle is de tected in front of theve hicle
during the driving-off procedure, a take ove r
wa rning is given. Acceleration is reduced, the
driver is given a visual and acoustic warning and
must stop theve hicle before reaching the obs ta‐
cle or take eva sive action.

If th e driver continues toigno rethe acoustic
wa rning of theAc tive Lane Change Assi st, Dis‐
ta nce Pilot DISTRONIC reduces the speed. If the
driver still does not respond, theve hicle is decel‐
erated in stages toast andstill.
The driver can cancel the deceleration at any
time byper form ing one of thefo llowing actions:
RSt eering
RBraking or accelerating
RPressing a steering wheel button or operat‐
ing Touch Control
RAc tivating or deacti vating Steering Pilot or

Information on Hill Start Assist
Hill Start Assist holds theve hicle when pulling
aw ay on a hill under thefo llowing conditions:
RThe transmission is in position hork.
RThe elect ric park ing brake is released.

Af ter a short time, Hill Start Assist no longe r
holds theve hicle and it can rollaw ay.

HOLD function
HOLD function
The HOLD function holds theve hicle at a stand‐
st ill without requ iring youto depress the brake pedal, such as when pulling
away on steep
slopes.
Sy stem limits
The incline must not be greaterth an 30%.

depressing the accelera tor pedal or the
brake pedal, e.g. byave hicle occupant.
RIfth e electrics in the engine compart‐
ment, the battery or the fuses are tam‐
pered with.
RIf th e battery is disconnected.
