Obstacle Distance Indicator (If
Equipped)
The system provides obstacle distanceindication through the information display.
As the distance to the obstacle decreases, the indicator blocks illuminate and movetoward the vehicle icon. If there is noobstacle detected, the distance indicatorblocks show greyed out.
When you shift to reverse (R), the sidesensing system provides audible warningswhen your vehicle is moving and obstaclesare detected within 24 in (60 cm) and areinside the driving path of your vehicle. When you stop your vehicle the audiblewarning stops after two seconds.
Note:Visual distance indication remainson when the transmission is in reverse (R).
When you shift to drive (D) or any otherforward gear, for example, low (L), sport(S) or any forward gear in manualtransmission, the side sensing systemprovides audible and visual distancewarnings when your vehicle is movingbelow a speed of 5 mph (8 km/h) and
obstacles are detected within 24 in(60 cm) and are inside the driving path ofyour vehicle. Once your vehicle reaches astandstill condition, the audible warningstops after two seconds and visualindication stops after four seconds.
If the transmission is in neutral (N), the sidesensing system provides visual distanceindication only when your vehicle is movingbelow a speed of 5 mph (8 km/h) andthere is a front or rear parking aid obstacledetected, and the side obstacle is within24 in (60 cm) from the side of your vehicle. When you stop your vehicle the visualdistance indication stops after fourseconds.
If the side sensing system is not available, the side distance indicator blocks do notappear.
The side sensing system is not availableunder the following condition:
•If you switch the traction controlsystem off.
The side sensing system may not beavailable until you have drivenapproximately the length of your vehiclein order for the system to reinitialize if:
•You switch the ignition on, off and backon.
•Your vehicle remains stationary for overtwo minutes.
•The anti-lock brake system isactivated.
•The traction control system isactivated.
•When the steering wheel angleinformation is not available, the sidesensing system is not available. Thevehicle must be driven at least 492 ft(150 m) above 19 mph (30 km/h) torecover the steering wheel angleinformation.

The system determines the clearance tothe front and rear of your vehicle andautomatically steers your vehicle out of aparallel parking space (hands-free) whileyou control the accelerator, gearshift andbrakes. The system visually and audiblyguides you to enter traffic.
After the system directs your vehicle pastthe adjacent vehicle or object, it guides youto take control of the steering to completethe exit out of the parking space.
Note:If the clearance in front of yourvehicle allows easy departure, the ParallelPark Out Assist feature may not beavailable.
Note:You are responsible for controllingyour vehicle and making sure the path isclear prior to pulling into traffic.
Note:Do not use this system to assist inexiting perpendicular parking spaces.Damages to your vehicle may occur.
Note:If your vehicle speed exceedsapproximately 3 mph (5 km/h) or youinterrupt the maneuver, the system switchesoff and you need to take full control of yourvehicle.
Deactivating the Active ParkAssist Feature
You can manually deactivate the systemby:
•Pressing the Active Park Assist buttonduring an active maneuver.
•Grabbing the steering wheel during anactive maneuver.
•Driving above approximately 22 mph(35 km/h) for 30 seconds whilesearching for a parking space.
•Driving above approximately 6 mph(10 km/h) during an active maneuver.
•Switching the traction control systemoff.
Certain vehicle conditions may alsodeactivate the system, for example:
•The traction control system activates.
•There is an anti-lock brake systemactivation or failure.
If a problem occurs with the system, awarning message displays accompaniedby a tone. Occasional system messagesmay occur in normal operation. Forrecurring or frequent system faults, contactan authorized dealer.

Troubleshooting the System
Possible CauseSymptom
You may have the traction control system switched off.The system does not look for aspace. The transmission is in reverse (R). Your vehicle mustbe moving forward to be able to detect a parking space.
The sensors may be covered. For example, snow, iceor dirt buildup. Covered sensors can affect how thesystem functions.
The system does not offer aparking space.
There is not enough room in the parking space for yourvehicle to safely park.
There is not enough space for the parking maneuver onthe opposite side of the parking space.
The parking space is more than 5 ft (1.5 m) or less than16 in (0.4 m) away.
Your vehicle speed is greater than 22 mph (35 km/h)for parallel parking, or greater than 19 mph (30 km/h)for perpendicular parking.
You recently disconnected or replaced the battery. Aftera battery disconnect, you must drive your vehicle on astraight road for a short period of time.
Your vehicle is rolling in the opposite direction of thecurrent transmission position. For example, rollingforward when in reverse (R).
The system does not positionthe vehicle correctly.
An irregular curb along the parking space prevents thesystem from aligning your vehicle properly.
Improperly parked vehicles or objects are boarding thespace.
Your vehicle is too far past the parking space. Thesystem performs best when you drive the samedistance past the parking space.
You have incorrectly installed or maintained the tires. For example, not inflated correctly, improper size, or ofdifferent sizes.
A repair or alteration changes the detection capabilities.

Overriding the Set Speed
WARNING
If you override the system by pressingthe accelerator pedal, it does notautomatically apply the brakes tomaintain a gap from any vehicle ahead.
When you press the accelerator pedal, youoverride the set speed and gap distance.
When you override the system, the green indicator lightilluminates and the vehicleimage does not appear in the informationdisplay.
The system resumes operation when yourelease the accelerator pedal. The vehiclespeed decreases to the set speed, or alower speed if following a slower vehicle.
Changing the Set Speed
•Press RES+ or SET- to change the setspeed in small increments.
•Press the accelerator or brake pedaluntil you reach the desired speed. PressRES+ or SET-.
•Press and hold RES+ or SET- tochange the set speed in largeincrements. Release the control whenyou reach the desired speed.
The system may apply the brakes to slowthe vehicle to the new set speed. The setspeed displays continuously in theinformation display when the system isactive.
Canceling the Set Speed
Press CNCL or tap the brake pedal. Theset speed does not erase.
Resuming the Set Speed
Note:Only use resume if you are aware ofthe set speed and intend to return to it.
Press RES+. Your vehicle speed returns tothe previously set speed and gap setting. The set speed displays continuously in theinformation display when the system isactive.
Automatic Cancellation
Automatic cancellation can also occur if:
•The tires lose traction.
•You apply the parking brake.
Hilly Condition Usage
Note:An audible alarm sounds and thesystem shuts down if it applies brakes foran extended period of time. This allows thebrakes to cool. The system functionsnormally again after the brakes cool.
Select a lower gear when the system isactive in situations such as prolongeddownhill driving on steep grades, forexample in mountainous areas. Thesystem needs additional engine braking inthese situations to reduce the load on thevehicle’s regular brake system to preventit from overheating.
Switching Adaptive Cruise ControlOff
Note:You erase the set speed and gapsetting when you switch the system off.
Press OFF when the system is in standbymode, or switch the ignition off.
Detection Issues
WARNINGS
On rare occasions, detection issuescan occur due to the roadinfrastructures, for example bridges, tunnels and safety barriers. In these cases, the system may brake late orunexpectedly. At all times, you areresponsible for controlling your vehicle, supervising the system and intervening, ifrequired.

•Do not warm up your vehicle on coldmornings.
•Do not rest your foot on the brakepedal while driving.
•Avoid carrying unnecessary weight.Approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) per gallonor 0.2 mi (0.4 km) per liter is lost forevery 400 lb (180 kg) of weight carried.
•Avoid adding accessories that increaseaerodynamic drag to your vehicle suchas bug deflectors, car top carriers andski or bike racks.
•Avoid driving with the wheels out ofalignment.
Things to keep in mind when you refuelyour vehicle:
•Fuel generates fewer vapors when it iscool and dark outside. Refuel yourvehicle in the early morning or lateevening.
•Use the recommended octane-ratedfuel. Using fuel below therecommended rating will lower yourfuel economy.
DRIVING THROUGH WATER
WARNING
Do not drive through flowing or deepwater as you may lose control of yourvehicle.
Note:Driving through standing water cancause vehicle damage.
Note:Engine damage can occur if waterenters the air filter.
Before driving through standing water, check the depth. Never drive through waterthat is higher than the bottom of the frontrocker area of your vehicle.
When driving through standing water, switch the engine off and drive through inEV mode, if available.
Drive very slowly and do not stop yourvehicle. Your brake performance andtraction may be limited. After drivingthrough water and as soon as it is safe todo so:
•Lightly press the brake pedal to dry thebrakes and to check that they work.
•Check that the horn works.
•Check that the exterior lights work.
•Turn the steering wheel to check thatthe steering power assist works.

U.S. Department ofTransportation Tire qualitygrades: The U.S. Department ofTransportation requires FordMotor Company to give you thefollowing information about tiregrades exactly as the governmenthas written it.
Treadwear
The treadwear grade is acomparative rating based on thewear rate of the tire when testedunder controlled conditions on aspecified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150would wear 1½ times as well onthe government course as a tiregraded 100. The relativeperformance of tires dependsupon the actual conditions of theiruse, however, and may departsignificantly from the norm due tovariations in driving habits, servicepractices, and differences in roadcharacteristics and climate.
Traction AA A B C
WARNING
The traction grade assignedto this tire is based onstraight-ahead braking tractiontests, and does not includeacceleration, cornering, hydroplaning or peak tractioncharacteristics.
The traction grades, from highestto lowest are AA, A, B, and C. Thegrades represent the tire’s abilityto stop on wet pavement asmeasured under controlledconditions on specifiedgovernment test surfaces ofasphalt and concrete. A tiremarked C may have poor tractionperformance.
Temperature A B C
WARNING
The temperature grade forthis tire is established for atire that is properly inflated andnot overloaded. Excessive speed, underinflation, or excessiveloading, either separately or incombination, can cause heatbuildup and possible tire failure.
The temperature grades are A(the highest), B and C,representing the tire’s resistanceto the generation of heat and itsability to dissipate heat whentested under controlled conditionson a specified indoor laboratorytest wheel. Sustained hightemperature can cause thematerial of the tire to degenerateand reduce tire life, and excessivetemperature can lead to suddentire failure. The grade Ccorresponds to a level ofperformance which all passengercar tires must meet under the

J.Tire Ply Composition andMaterial Used: Indicates thenumber of plies or the number oflayers of rubber-coated fabric inthe tire tread and sidewall. Tiremanufacturers also must indicatethe ply materials in the tire and thesidewall, which include steel, nylon, polyester, and others.
K.Maximum Load: Indicates themaximum load in kilograms andpounds that can be carried by thetire. See the Safety ComplianceCertification Label (affixed toeither the door hinge pillar,door-latch post, or the door edgethat meets the door-latch post, next to the driver's seatingposition), for the correct tirepressure for your vehicle.
L.Treadwear, Traction andTemperature Grades:
* Treadwear The treadweargrade is a comparative ratingbased on the wear rate of the tirewhen tested under controlledconditions on a specifiedgovernment test course. Forexample, a tire graded 150 wouldwear one and one-half times aswell on the government course asa tire graded 100.
*Traction: The traction grades, from highest to lowest are AA, A,B, and C. The grades represent thetire's ability to stop on wetpavement as measured undercontrolled conditions on specifiedgovernment test surfaces ofasphalt and concrete. A tiremarked C may have poor tractionperformance.
* Temperature: The temperaturegrades are A (the highest), B andC, representing the tire'sresistance to the generation ofheat and its ability to dissipateheat when tested under controlledconditions on a specified indoorlaboratory test wheel.
M.Maximum InflationPressure: Indicates the tiremanufacturers' maximumpermissible pressure or thepressure at which the maximumload can be carried by the tire. Thispressure is normally higher thanthe vehicle manufacturer'srecommended cold inflationpressure which can be found onthe Safety ComplianceCertification Label (affixed toeither the door hinge pillar,door-latch post, or the door edgethat meets the door-latch post, next to the driver's seatingposition), or Tire Label which islocated on the B-Pillar or the edgeof the driver’s door. The coldinflation pressure should never beset lower than the recommended
pressure on the vehicle label.
