Winter tires
By using all wheel drive, your vehicle has good
forward motion with standard tires in winter con­
ditions. However, in winter we recommend using
winter or all season tires on
all four wheels, be­
cause this will improve the
broking effect.
Snow chains
If there are snow chain laws, snow chains must
also be used on vehicles with all wheel drive
c::> page 259, Snow chains.
Replacing tires
For vehicles with all wheel drive, only wheels with
the same rolling circumference should be used .
Avoid using tires with different tread depths
c::> page 251, New tires or wheels.
Offroad vehicle?
Your Aud i is not an offroad vehicle - there is not
enough ground clearance. For this reason, avoid
difficult terrain.
,& WARNING
- Also, in vehicles with all wheel drive, adapt
your driv ing style to the current road and
t ra ffic conditions. Do not let the increased
safety provided tempt you into taking risks,
because this increases the r isk of an acci­
dent.
- The braking ability of your vehicle is limited
to the traction of the wheels. In this way, it
is not different from a two wheel drive vehi­
cle. Do not be tempted to accelerate to a
high speed when the road is slippery, be­
cause this increases the risk of an accident.
- Note that on wet streets, the front wheels
can "hydroplane" if driving at speeds that
are too high. Unlike front whee l drive
vehicles, the engine does not rev higher sud­
denly when the vehicle begins hydroplaning.
For this reason, adapt your speed to the
road conditions to reduce the risk of an acci­
dent.

Rear spoiler
Applies to: vehicles with retractable rear spoile r
The extendoble rear spoiler increases driving sta­
bility.

The rear spoiler retracts and extends. It can be
activated in various operat ing modes (manua l
mode or automatic mode).
Automatic mode (normal operation)
- Automatic extension: the rear spoiler w ill auto­
matically extend when speeds exceed approxi­
mately 75 mph (120 km/h)
- Automatic retraction: the rear spoiler w ill auto­
matically retract when speeds decrease to un­
der approximately 50 mph (80 km/h).
Manual mode
- Extend ing manually : briefly tap the
c::> fig. 95
button to fully extend the rear spoiler .
- Retracting manually: when driving at speeds
below approximately 10 mph (20 km/h), press
and hold the b utton to retract the rear spoiler.
When at speeds between 10 mph (20 km/h)
and 75 mph (120 km/h), the rear spoiler will
completely retract when you tap the button.

The rear spoiler may not have extended due to a
malfunction . This could change the vehicle's driv­
ing characteristics at high speeds . Do not drive
faster than 85 mph (140 km/h) . Drive to an au-
thorized Audi dea ler or authorized Audi Service

Facility immediately to have the malfunction cor­
rected. The color of the indicator light depends
on the vehicle speed.
A WARNING
-
Driving at higher speeds without the rear
spoiler deployed can impair handling charac­
teristics, making the vehicle harder to con­
trol.
- Always make sure that the spoiler is de­
ployed when driving at speeds over 85 mph
(140 km/h) . If the rear spoiler warning/ind i­
cator lig ht in the instrument cluste r comes
on, the rear spoiler may not have deployed.
- Never drive at speeds higher than 85 mph
(140 km/h) if the spoile r is not deployed.
Have the spo iler inspected as soon as possi ­
ble by an author ized Audi dealer or qua lified
works hop .
- Always obey speed l imits and othe r traffic
laws .
A WARNING
Improper operation of t he rear spoiler can
cause crushing injuries.
- Always make sure that nobody, especia lly
children, is in the way when the rear spoi ler
is deployed or retracted .
(Llj) Note
-Never push on the vehicle on the rear spo il­
er. This cou ld cause damage.
- To p reve nt damage to the rear spoiler do
not lean o r place anyt hing on it.
-
- Only ope rate the rear spoiler manually when
the luggage compartment lid is close and
the rear spoiler mov ing parts are not
blocked. Otherwise, damage could occur .
(j) Tips
Clean the rear spoiler compartment eve ry 2 to
3 months . To function co rrectly, the rear
spoiler must be free of ice, snow and leaves .
Intellig ent T echn olo gy
Energy management
Your vehicle is equipped with an intelligent ener­
gy management system for distributing electrici ­
ty. This significantly improves the starting ability
and increases the vehicle battery life.
(D Tips
- If you drive short distances frequent ly, the
vehicle battery may not charge enough
wh ile driving. As a result, convenience func­
tions for electr ical equipment may be tem­
pera rily unavailable .
- The vehicle battery w ill gradually drain if
the vehicle is not driven for long per iods of
t ime, or if electr ical equ ipment is used
when the engine is not runn ing. To ensure
that the veh icle can still be started, the
elect rical eq uipment w ill be red uced or
sw itched
off.
Information about data
recorded by vehicle
control modules
Your vehicle is not equipped with a crash data re­
corder . This dev ice is installed by some veh icle
manufacturers to record data about crashes so
t h at it can be ana lyzed later. Crash data reco rd ­
ers are also called " Event Data Recorders (EDR)".
In some legal jurisdictions, it is not permitted to
access or down load data recorded by pre-instal­
led crash data recorders in orde r to evaluate a
crash without clear consent of the vehicle owner.
Your vehicle is not equ ipped w ith a crash data re­
corder . However it does contain a variety of e lec­
tronic control modules for various vehicle sys­
tems such as engine function, exha ust treatment
or airbags and safety belts.
T hese electronic contro l modu les record veh icle
data du ring normal driv ing fo r diagnosis and re­
pair purposes. The record ing capability of the
electronic control modules is limited to data only
-no sound is recorded . If the contro l module de ­
tects a system ma lfunction or other change in
status, a very limited amount of data is recorded
for an extremely small period of time. Data that

Telephone Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with telephone
To make phone coils in your vehicle using the
MMI, connect your cell phone to the MMI via
Bluetooth.
Handsfree
After you have connected your ce ll phone to the
MMI via Bluetooth, you can use the handsfree
system and operate telephone functions through
your MMI. You can make calls using the antenna
on your cell phone.
A WARNING
-Medical experts warn that cell phones can
interfere w ith the funct ion of pacemakers .
Always ma inta in a m inimum distance of
about 8 inches (20 cm) between the cell
phone antenna and the pacemake r.
-Do not carry the cell phone in a pocket di­
rectly over the pacemaker when the phone
is switched on.
-Sw itch the cell phone off immediately if
you suspect it may be interfering w ith the
pacemaker.
-Do not use the voice recognition system*

voice may change in stressful situations. It
may take longer to dial the number or the
system may not be able to dial it at all. Dial
the emergency number manually.
-Switch your cell phone off in areas where
there is a risk of an exp losion. These loca­
t ions are not always clearly marked. This
may include gas stations, fuel and chemical
storage facilities or transport vehicles, or lo­
cations where fue l vapors (such as propane
or gasoline vapor in vehicles or bui ldings),
chem icals or large quantities of dust parti­
cles (such as flour, sawdust or metal) may
be present in the air. Th is also applies to all
ot her locations where you would normally
turn your vehicle engine off.
-The demands of traffic require your full at­
tention. Always read the chapter ¢
page 93,

@ Tips
The engine oil consumption may be up to
0.5 quart/600 miles (0.5 liter/1,000 km), de­
pending on driving style and operat ing condi­
tions. Consumption may be hig her during the
first 3,000 m iles (5,000 km) . Because of th is,
the engine o il level must be checked reg ular­
l y .
It is best to check each time you refuel
your vehicle and befo re long drives.
- In order to prov ide effec tive lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, a ll
internal combustion engines consume acer­
tain amount of oil. Oil consumption var ies
from engine to engine and may change sig­ nificantly over the life of the engine . Typi­
cally, eng ines with a specified break-in peri­
od consume more oil during the break-in pe­
r iod than they consume after oil consump­
tion has stabilized .
- Under normal condit ions, the rate of oil
consumption depends on the quality and
viscos ity of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per
m in ute) at which the engine is operated, the
ambient temperatu re and road conditions .
Further factors a re t he amo unt of oi l di lu­
t ion from water condensat ion or fue l resi­
due and the oxidation level of the oil. As any
eng ine is subject to wear as m ileage builds
up, the oil consumption may increase over
time until replacement of worn components may become necessary.
- With all these var iables coming into play,
no standard rate of o il consumption can be
established or specified. There is no alterna­
t ive to check ing the oil leve l regularly and
frequently.
- If you have the impression your engine con­
sumes excessive amounts of oil, we recom­
mend that you consult a n author ized Audi
dea le r to have the cause of your conc ern
properly diagnosed. Keep in mind tha t the
acc ura te measurement of o il cons umption
requires great care and may take some

tions about how to measure oil consump ­
tion acc urately.

lubricating properties of oil diminish gradually
during normal vehicle use.
Unde r some c ircu mstances the eng ine o il should
be changed more frequently . Change oil mo re of­
ten if you drive most ly short distances, ope rate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and -go traffic condit ions, or have your vehi­
cle where temperatures remain below free zing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
l ook dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. Th is is normal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposa l, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re­
qu ired, we strongly recommend that you have
your oil changed by an authorized
A ud i de ale r or
a qualified service station .
If you c hoo se to change your o il y our self , please
note the following important information:
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury if you
must change the engine oil in your veh icle
yourself:
- Wear eye protection .
- To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine oil, let the eng ine cool down to the touch.

- When removing the o il drain plug with your
fingers, stay as far away as poss ible. A lways
keep your forearm paralle l to the ground to
help prevent hot o il from runn ing down your
arm .
- Drai n the oil into a container designed for
this pu rpose, one large enough to hold at
least the total amount of oil in your e ng ine .
- Engine oil is poisonous . Keep it well out of
the reach of ch ild ren .
- Cont inuous contact w ith used eng ine oi l is
harmful to your sk in. A lways protect your
sk in by washing oil off thoroug hly w ith soap
and water.

Never mix oil addit ives with your engine o il.

- Before chang ing yo ur oil, first make sure
you know where you can proper ly d ispose o f
the used oi l.
- Always dispose of used engine o il properly.
Do not dump it on garden soil, wooded
areas, into open streams or down sewage
drains.
- Recycle used engine oi l by taking it to a used
engine oi l collection faci lity in you r area, or
contact a service station .
Cooling system
Coolant
The eng ine cooling system is fi lled w it h a m ixtu re
of purified water and coo lant additive at the fac ­
tory . This coolant must not be not c hanged.

mend occasionally checking the coolant leve l
manua lly.
If you must add coolant, use a mixture of wate r
and coolant additive . Mix ing t he coo lant add it ive
with dis tilled water is recommended.

T he coolant add itive is made of anti-free zing and
cor rosion protect ion agents. On ly use the follow­
i ng coolant additives . These add itives may be
mixed wi th ea ch o the r.

The amount of coolant additive that needs to be
mixed with water depends on the cl imate where
the vehicle w ill be oper ated. If the coo lant add i­
t ive percentage is too low, the coolant can freeze
and damage the eng ine .

for the climate. Th is is especially important

- If the appropriate coolant additive is not
available in an emergency, do not add any
other additive . You cou ld damage the en­
gine.
If t his happens, only use wate r and re­
store the correct mixture ratio with the
specified coolant additive as soon as possi­
ble .
- Only refill with new coo lant.
- Radiato r sealant must not be mixed w ith

Coolant loss usually ind icates there is a leak. Im­
mediate ly dr ive your vehicle to a n author ized

and have the cooling system inspected. If the
cooling system is not lea king , a loss can come
from the coolant boiling through overheat ing
and being pushed ou t of the cooling system .
Lil WARNING
- The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not open the coo lant expansion tank cap
when the engine is hot. This increases the risk of burns.
-The coolant additive and the coolant can be dangerous to your health. For this reason ,
keep the coolant in the original container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poisoning.
-When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched
off, wh ich
increases the r is k of injury.

Do not add coolant if the expans ion tank is
