Driving with a trailer
General information
Your veh icle is primari ly intended for transport­
ing peop le and luggage. Howeve r, if you dr ive
with a tra iler , follow the techn ica l requirements ,
the operation and driving tips, and the lega l reg ­
ulations.
Dr iving w ith a trailer affects the vehicle 's fuel
consumpt ion, performance and wear. It a lso re­
quires higher concentration from the driver .
A WARNING
Do not transport any people in a trailer due to
the risk of fatal injury .
Technical requirements
Certain requirements must be met when towing
a trailer.
Trailer hitch
Only use a trailer hitch with a removab le ball
h itch mount and ball h itch. The tra ile r hitc h must
be pe rm it t ed for the vehicle, the tra iler and the
permitted tota l weight of the trailer being
pu lled . Above all, it must be secure ly and safe ly
attached to the vehicle trailer.
Never mo unt a t rai ler hitch on the bumper. The
trai ler hitc h must be mounted in a way that does
not impair the function of the bumper. Do not
make any changes to the exhaust system and the
brake system.
Check regu larly if the trai ler hitc h is securely
mounted . A lways follow the instructions given by
the trai ler hitch manufacturer .
Trailer brakes
If t he tra ile r has its own bra ke system, then fol­
low the manufacturer specifica tions. Howeve r,
the brake system on the trai ler must never be
connected to the vehicle brake system.

Engine cooling system
D riving w ith a tra ile r means a higher load on t he
engine and the cooling sys tem. The coo ling sys­
tem must be designed for additiona l load and
contain enoug h

A WARNING -
- Never mount a "weight -distributing" or
"load-balancing" trailer coupler as the trail­
er hitch. The ve hicle was not des igned for
these types of tra iler h itches. The tra iler
h itch can malfunction and t he tra ile r can
b reak off from the vehicle.
- If t he tra ile r i s equ ipped w ith elect ronic
brakes, these brakes can not be activated by
a facto ry-installed control system, whi ch in­
creases the r isk of an accide nt.
- To red uce the r is k of injury, always remove
the ball hitch mount if no tra ile r is mo unt ­
ed.
@ Note
L onge r incl ines cannot be dr iven without a
su itab le cooli ng system, especially if the out­
s ide temperatu res a re high. ot herwise, this
i nc reases the risk of eng ine da mage.
Operating instructions
Several things must be noted when towing a
trailer.
Towing capacity
The permitted towing capacity must not be ex ­
ceeded under any
circumstances ~ page 370.
You can dr ive up larger inclines if you are not us­
i ng the maximum towing capacity.
The towing capacities given only apply to e leva ­
tions up to 3,200 ft (1,000 m) above sea level. As
the e levation increases, the engine power de­
creases due to the decreasing air pressures. T his
reduces the hill climb ing ability and towing ca­
pac ity . For every additional 3,200
ft (1,000 m),
t h e maximum permitted tow ing weight must be
r educed by app roximately 10% . T he pe rm itted
tow ing weight is t he comb ined we igh t of the
( loaded) vehicle and the (loaded) trailer .

Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta­
tion .
Before you check anyt hing in the eng ine compart ­
ment,
alwa ys read and heed all WARNING S¢.&.
in Working in the engine comportment on
page 314.
The engine oil must be changed accord ing to the
intervals specified in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet . This is very important because the
lubricat ing propert ies of oil diminish gradually
during normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oi l should
be changed more frequently. Change oil more of­
ten if you drive most ly short distances, operate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and-go traffic condit ions, or have your vehi­
cle where temperatures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
look dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. Th is is normal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re­
qu ired, we strongly recommend that you have
your oil c hanged by an authorized
A udi de aler or
a qualified service station .
If you choos e to change your o il y our self , please
note the following important information:

must change the engine oil in your ve hicle

-Wear eye p rotection.
-To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine
o il, let the eng ine cool down to the touch.
-
-Whe n removing the o il drain plug with your
fingers, stay as far away as poss ible. A lways
Ch eck ing and F illing
keep your forearm pa rallel to the ground to
he lp prevent hot oil from running down your
arm.
-Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one la rge enough to hold at
least the tota l amount of oil in your engine.
-Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of children.
-Continuous contact with used engine o il is
harmful to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoroughly with soap
a nd water.
@ Note
Never mix oil additives with yo ur engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adverse ly affect your Audi limited New Vehi­
cle Warranty.
@) For the sake of the environment
-Before chang ing your oi l, first ma ke sure
you know where you can properly d ispose of
the used oil.
-Always dispose of used engine o il properly.
Do not dump it on garden so il, wooded
areas, into open streams o r down sewage
dra ins.
-Recycle used eng ine o il by tak ing it to a used
eng ine oi l collec tion fac ility in yo ur area, or
contact a se rvice station.
Cooling system
Coolant
The eng ine cooling system is fi lled w ith a mixture
of purified water and coolant additive at the fac­
tory. This coolant must not be not changed.

mend occasionally checking the coolant leve l
manual ly.
If you must add coo lant, use a mixture of water
and coolant additive. Mixing the coolant add itive
with dist illed water is recommended.

Coolant addit ive
The coolan t additive is made of anti-freezi ng and
corrosion protection agents. Only use the fo llow ­
ing coolant additives . These additives may be
mixed w ith each other.

The amount of coolant additive that needs to be
mixed with water depends on the climate where
the vehicle will be operated. If the coolant addi­
tive percentage is too low, the coolant can freeze
and damage the engine.

- Before the start of winter, have an author­
i zed Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service
Fac ility check if the coolant additive in your
vehicle matches the percentage appropriate
fo r the climate. This is especially important
when driving in co lde r climates.
- If the appropriate coolant additive is not
available in an emergency, do no t add any
othe r addi tive. You cou ld d amage the en­
gine. If this happens, only use water and re­
store the correct mixture ra tio with the
specified coolant additive as soon as possi­
ble.
- Only refill with new coo lant.
- Radia tor sealan t must no t be m ixed w it h

from the coolant boili ng through overheating
and being pushed out of the cooling system.

-The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not open the coolant expansion tank cap
when the eng ine is hot. This inc reases the
risk of burns.
- The coo lant add itive and the coolant can be
dangerous to you r healt h. For this reason,
keep t he coolant i n the o rigi nal container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poiso ning.
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember t hat the radiator fan can sw itch
o n even if the ign ition is swi tched off, which
increases the risk of i njury.

Do not add coo lant if the expansion tank is
empty. There may be a ir in the coo ling sys­
t em, wh ich increases t he risk of engi ne dam­
age . If this is the case, do not continue driv­
ing . See an authorized Aud i dea le r or a uthor ­

- If the b rake fl uid is old, b ubbles may form
in the brake system dur ing heavy bra king.
This wo uld impair braking performance and
driving safety, which increases the r isk of an
accident.
- To ensure the brake system functions cor­ rectly, only use brake f luids tha t comply
wit h VW standard S0 l 14 o r
F M VSS -116 DOT 4 .

qu ire special tools, testing devices and other

forma nce, re liab ility and safety of the ve hicle and
its many systems .
Improper maintenance, adjustments and repairs
can impair the operation and reliab il ity of your
ve hicle and eve n void your vehicle warra nty .
Therefo re, proof of se rvicing in accordance w ith
the m aintenance schedule may be a condition fo r
up hold ing a possible wa rranty claim made wi thin
the warranty pe riod.
Above all, ope rational safety can be adversely af­
fected, c re ating unnecessa ry risks fo r you and
your passengers.
I f in doubt about any servicing, have it done by
your author ized Audi dealer or any other prope rly
eq uipped and qualified workshop . We strongly

opportunity to perform a ll scheduled mainte ­
nance and necessary repairs. Your dealer has the
facilities, origina l parts and tra ined specialists to
keep your veh icle running properly.
Performing limit ed maint enanc e yourself
The fo llowing pages describe a limited number of
procedures whic h can be performed on your ve hi­
cle with ordinary tools, should the need arise and
tra ined personnel be unava ilable. Before per ­
forming any of these procedures, always thor­
ough ly read all of the app licab le text and carefu l­

A WARNING
-Ser ious personal injury may occur as a result
of improperly performed maintenance, ad­
justments or repairs .
- Always be extreme ly careful when work ing
on the vehicle . Always follow commonly ac­
cepted safety practices and general com­ mon sense. Never r is k personal in jury.
- Do not attempt any of the maintenance,
checks or repairs described on the following pages if you are not fu lly fam il iar with these
or other procedu res with respect to the ve­
hicle, or are uncertain how to proceed.
- Do not do any work wi thout the prope r tools
and eq uipmen t. H ave the necessary wo rk
done by your authorized Audi dealer or an ­
other properly equipped and qualified work­
shop.
- The engine compartment of any motor vehi ­
cle is a potentially hazardous area . Never
reach into the area around or touch the radi­
ator fan. It is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly - even when the en­
gine is off and the ignition key has been re­
moved. The rad iator fan switches on auto­
mat ically when the coolant reaches a certain
temperature and will con tinue to run until
the coolant temperat ure drops.
- Always remove the igni tion key before any­
one gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your vehicle with safety
stands if it is necessary to work underneath
the vehicle. The jack* s upplied w ith the vehi­
cle is no t ad equate for th is pu rpose and
could collapse causing se rious personal in ­
jury .
- If you must work underneath the vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, always make
sure the vehicle is on level ground, that the
wheels a re always sec urely blocked and that
the engine cannot be started.
- Always make sure the transmission se lector
lever (automatic t ransm iss ion) is in P (Park
position) and the park b rake is applied .
