Driving
-The parking brake goes through a se lf -test
cycle at regular intervals when the vehicle is
stopped . Any noises associated w ith this are
normal.
- If there is a power failure , the parking brake
will not set if it is re leased, and it will not
release if it is

cility for ass istance .
Starting to drive
Various convenience and safety functions may be
ava ilable when the vehicle begins driving , de ­
pending on vehicle equipment.
Starting on hills with the parking brake set
Requirement: the doors must be closed and the
driver's safety belt must be fastened .
~ To start driving comfortably when on a hill, set
the parking brake and begin driving as usual.
The braking force of the parking brake does not
release automatically until the wheels build up
enough dr iv ing force .
Starting on hills with hill hold assist
Hill hold assist makes it easier to start on hills .
Requirement: the driver's door must be closed
and the engine must be running.
~ To activate hill hold assist, press and hold the
brake peda l for several seconds. The veh icle
must be in an uph ill direction of travel.
After releasing the brake pedal, the brak ing pow ­
er is ma intained for a brief
moment ¢.& to pre­
ve nt the vehicle from rolling back when starting.
During this time, you can easily beg in to move
your ve hicle.
A WARNING
-If you do not begin driving immediately or
the engine stalls after releasing the brake
pedal, your vehicle may begin to roll back­
ward . Press the brake pedal or set the park­
ing brake immed iate ly.
- The intelligent techno logy of hill hold assist
cannot overcome the limitations imposed by

natural physica l laws. The increased comfort
offered by hill hold assist should not cause
you to take safety risks .
- Hill hold assist cannot hold the vehicle in
place on all hills (for examp le, if the ground
is s lippery or icy).
- To reduce the r isk of an accident, always
make sure the veh icle is situated safely
while stationary .
Off road driving
General information
The Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) func­
tions were enhanced for driving offroad. Offroad
mode can be activated when driving in situations
where slippage or a differential lock function is
necessary ¢ page 141. The hill descent assist is
also available, wh ich automatically brakes the ve­
hicle to maintain a constant speed
¢ page 142 .
In add it ion, your Audi provides cont inuous all
whee l drive .
However, your Audi is not a purely offroad vehi­
cle . Your vehicle was not designed to dr ive under
extreme operating conditions such as driving in
an expedition style.
Only drive on terrain that is suitable for the ve­
hicle and your driving ability. Never take any
unnecessary risks!
Before driving offroad
- Check the engine oil level, the tire pressure, the coo lant level and the fluid level in the washer
fluid reservoir.
- Store pieces of luggage and other objects in the
luggage compartment and secure them from
sliding out of place .
After driving offroad
-After driving offroad, remove branches and
other debris from the radiator grille, under­
body, and wheels. Look especially for foreign
objects (such as s tones) that may be stuck in
the t ire tread .
- Clean the vehicle body and underbody and in-
spect the vehicle for possible damage .

Telephone
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with telephone
To make phone coils in your vehicle using the
/11/111, connect your cell phone to the /11/111 via
Bluetooth.
Hand sfree
After you have connected your ce ll phone to the
MMI via B luetooth, you can use the handsfree
system and operate telephone functions through
your
MMI. You can make calls using the antenna
on your cell phone.
A WARNING
-Medical experts warn that cell phones can
interfere w ith the funct ion of pacemakers .
Always mainta in a m inimum d istance of
about 8 inches (20 cm) between the ce ll
phone antenna and the pacemaker.
-Do not carry the cell phone in a pocket di ­
rectly over the pacemaker when the phone
is switched on.
-Sw itch the cell phone off immediately if
you suspect it may be interfering w ith the
pacemaker.
-Do not use the vo ice recognit ion system*
<=) page 167 in emergencies because your
vo ice may change in stressful situations. It
may take longer to dial the number or the
system may not be able to dia l it at all. Dial
the emergency n umbe r manua lly.
-Switch your cell phone off in areas where
there is a ris k of an exp losion . These loca­
tions are not always clearly mar ked. This
may include gas stations, fuel and chemical
storage facilities or transport vehicles, o r lo ­
cations where fue l vapors (such as propane
or gaso line vapor in vehicles or bui ldings),
chemicals or large quantities of dust parti ­
cles (such as flour, sawdust or metal) may
be present in the air . This also applies to all
other locations where you would normally
turn your vehicle engine off .

Checking the engine oil level
The engine oil level con be checked in the Info­
tainment system

~ Park your vehicle on a level surface.

~ Switch only the ignition back on.

The engine oi l level must not be under the

The oil leve l indicator in the display is only an
informational display.
If the oil leve l is too
l ow, a min imum oil warning appears in the in­
strument cluster. Add oil and close the hood.
The current oil level is displayed in the Info­
tainment system the next time the ignition is
switched on .
(D Tips
The engine oil consumption may be up to
0.5 quart/600 miles (0.5 liter/1,000 km), de­
pending on driv ing sty le and operat ing cond i­
tions. Consumption may be higher dur ing the
first 3,000 miles (5,000 km). Because of this,
the engine o il level must be checked regular­
l y . It is best to check each time you refuel
your vehicle and before long drives.
- In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, a ll
internal combustion engines consume acer ­
tain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies
from engine to engine and may change sig­
nifica ntly over the life of the engine. Typ i­
cally, eng ines with a specified break-in peri­
od consume more oil during the break-in pe­
r iod than they consume after oil cons ump­
t ion has stabilized.
- Under normal conditions, the rate of oil
consumption depends on the quality and
viscos ity of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per
min ute) at which the engine is operated, the
ambient temperature and road conditions.
Further factors are the amount of oil dilu­
tion from water condensation or fue l resi­
due and the oxidation level of the oil. As any
eng ine is subject to wear as m ileage builds
up, the oil consumption may increase over
time until replacement of worn components
may become necessary.

Checking and Filling
-With all these variables coming into play,
no standard rate of o il consumption can be
established or specified. There is no alterna­
tive to checking the oil level regularly and
frequently.
- If you have the impression your engine con­
sumes excessive amounts of oil, we recom­
mend that you consult an authorized Audi
dealer to have the cause of your concern properly diagnosed . Keep in mind that the
accurate measurement of oil consumption
requires great care and may take some
time. An authorized Audi dealer has instruc­
tions about how to measure oil consump­
tion accurately.

- When adding oil, do not let oil drip onto hot
engine components . This increases the risk
of afire.
- You must seal the cap on the oil filler open­
ing correctly so that oil does not leak out
onto the hot engine and exhaust system
when the engine is running, because this is
a fire hazard.
-Always clean skin thoroughly if it comes into
contact with engine oil.
- Engine oil is poisonous and must be kept
out of reach of children.
- Store the engine oil securely in the original
container.

- If the message II Please reduce oil level
appears, there is too much oil in the engine
and there is a risk of catalytic converter and
engine damage. Do not start the engine.
Contact an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility to have excess
engine oil extracted if necessary.
- Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does
not cover damage or malfunctions due to
failure to follow recommended mainte­
nance and use requirements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty &
Maintenance booklet.
- Use only a high quality engine oil that ex­
pressly complies with the Audi oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's engine. Using any other oil can cause serious engine
damage .
- Do not mix any additional lubricants into
the engine oil. Damage caused by such addi­
tives is not covered by the warranty .

Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta­
tion .
Before you check anyt hing in the eng ine compart ­
ment,

The engine oil must be changed accord ing to the
intervals specified in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet . This is very important because the
lubricat ing propert ies of oil diminish gradually
during normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oi l should
be changed more frequently. Change oil more of­
ten if you drive most ly short distances, operate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and-go traffic condit ions, or have your vehi­
cle where temperatures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
look dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. Th is is normal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re­
qu ired, we strongly recommend that you have
your oil c hanged by an authorized
A udi de aler or
a qualified service station .
If you choos e to change your o il y our self , please

-Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one la rge enough to hold at
least the tota l amount of oil in your engine.
-Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of children.
-Continuous contact with used engine o il is
harmful to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoroughly with soap
a nd water.

Never mix oil additives with yo ur engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adverse ly affect your Audi limited New Vehi­
cle Warranty.

you know where you can properly d ispose of
the used oil.
-Always dispose of used engine o il properly.
Do not dump it on garden so il, wooded
areas, into open streams o r down sewage

eng ine oi l collec tion fac ility in yo ur area, or
contact a se rvice station.
Cooling system
Coolant
The eng ine cooling system is fi lled w ith a mixture
of purified water and coolant additive at the fac­
tory. This coolant must not be not changed.

mend occasionally checking the coolant leve l
manual ly.
If you must add coo lant, use a mixture of water
and coolant additive. Mixing the coolant add itive
with dist illed water is recommended.
