A WARNING
-
Improperly in stalled chi ld safety seats in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury and
death in a collision.
- Always make sure that the safety belt re­
tractor is locked when installing a child safety seat. An unlocked safety belt retrac­
tor cannot hold the child safety seat in place dur ing normal driving or in a crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in
place even if a child is not sitting in it. A
loose child safety seat can fly around during
a sudden stop or in a collision.
- Always make sure that the rear seat back­
rest to wh ich the center rear safety belt* is
attached is secure ly latched whenever the
rea r cente r safety belt is being used to se­
cur e a ch ild rest raint.
- If the backrest is not securely latched, the
child and the child restraint will be thrown
forwar d toge ther w it h the backrest and will
st rike parts of the vehicle interior. The ch ild
can be se riously in jured or killed .
- Never ins tall rear-f acing chi ld safety sea ts
or infant carriers on the front passen ger
seat . A child will be serious ly inju red and
can be killed when the passenger airbag in­
flates.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the ch ild safety seat and chi ld
against the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof .
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
o r infant carriers on the rear seat.
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety seats or infant
carriers installed on the front passenger's
seat may interfere with the deployment of
the a irbag and cause serious injury to the
child.
- It is safe r to install a forward-fac ing ch ild
safety seat on the rear seat.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS when­
ever using a child res trained in a veh icle is
being

- After checking to make su re that the child
rest raint is proper ly installed, make ce rtain
that the child restraint is co rrectly recog­
n ized by the capacitive passenger detection
system in the front passenger seat and that
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light sig­
na ls the correct front passenger fronta l air­
b ag sta tus.
A WARNING
F orw ard-facing child restra int s:
- Always make sure the forward-facing sea t
has been des igned and certified by its man­
ufa cturer for use on a fron t sea t with a pa s­
senger front and side air bag.

Child sa fety
- Never put the forward -facing child restraint
up, against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
- Always move the front passenger seat to
the h ighest position in the up and down ad­
justment range and move it back to the
rearmost position in the seat's fore and aft
adjustment range, as far away from the air­
bag as possib le, before insta lli ng the for­
wa rd-facing child restra int.
- Always make sure that the safety belt upper
anchorage is beh ind the child restra int and
not next to or in front of t he ch ild restraint
so tha t the safety belt w ill be properly pos i­
tioned.
- Make s ure tha t the

OFF ~; light comes on and stays on a ll the
time whenever the ignition is switched on.
A WARNING
Rearward-facing child restraints:
- A ch ild in a rea rw ar d-facing child safety seat
insta lled on the front passenger seat wi ll be
seriously injured and can be killed if the
front airbag inflates
-even with an Ad ­
vanced Airbag System.
- The inflating airbag wi ll hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the chi ld safety seat and child
against the backrest , center armrest, door
or roof.
- Always be especially careful if you must in­
sta ll a rearward facing child safety seat on
the front passenger seat in exceptional c ir­

Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to secure a
child restraint.
Always heed the child safety seat manufacturer's
i nstruct ions when installing a child restra int in
your vehicle. To activate the convertible locking r etractor:
.,. Place the child restraint on a seat, preferably
on the rear seat .
.,. Slowly pull the belt all th e w ay out .
.,. Route it around or through the child restra int
be lt
path~ .,&..
.,. Push the ch ild safety sea t down with yo ur full
weigh t to ge t the safety belt rea lly tigh t.
.,. Insert t he be lt tong ue into the b uck le for that
seating position .
.,. Guide the safety be lt back into the retractor un ­
til the belt lies flat and snug on the ch ild safety
seat.
.,. You shou ld hear a "cl icking" noise as the belt
w inds back into the inertia reel. Test the con ­
vert ib le lock ing retractor by pull ing on the belt.
You s hou ld no lo nge r be able to pull the belt
out of the retracto r. T he convertib le lock ing re ­
tracto r is now activa ted .
.,. Make sure that the red release button is facing
away from the chi ld restraint so that it can be
unb uc kled quickly .
.,. Pull on the belt to make sure the safety belt is
properly t ight and fastened so that the seat
cannot move forward or s ideways more than
one inch (2 .5 cm) .
A WARNING
Using the wrong ch ild rest raint or an improp­
e rly insta lled child restra int can ca use se rio us
pe rsonal injury or death in a crash.
- Always make sure that the safety be lt re ­
tr actor is locked whe n in stalling a c hild
safety seat . An un lo cked sa fety be lt retr ac­
tor cannot hold the chi ld safety seat in p lace
during normal driving or in a crash.
- Always buckle t he chi ld safety seat fi rm ly in

- Never open the hood when there is steam or
coo lant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned . Wait unt il no steam or coolant is
escaping.
- Keep children away from the eng ine com­
partment .
- Never sp ill fluids on a hot engine . These flu­
ids (such as the anti-freezing agent con­
tained in the coolant) can ignite .
- Avoid short c ircuits in the electrical system.
- When working in the engine compartment, remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched off, wh ich
increases the r isk of injury .
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan­
sion tank when the engine is warm . The
cool ing system is under pressure .
- To protect your face, hands, and arms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap w ith a
large cloth when open ing.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns .
- If tests need to be performed with the en­
gine runni ng, there is add itiona l danger due
to mov ing components (such as the r ibbed
be lt, alte rnato r and rad iato r fan) and from
the hig h-voltage ignition system.
- Do not unde r any ci rcumstances activate the
throttle inadvertent ly (for example, by hand
from the engine compartment) if the veh i­
cle is stationary but the engine is running
and a gear is engaged. Otherwise, the vehi ­
cle will start to move immediate ly and this
could result in an acc ident.
- Pay attention to the following warnings
when work on the fue l system is required:
- Do not smoke.
- Never work near open flames .
- Always have a working fire extinguisher
nearby.
- All work on the battery or electrical system in your vehicle can result in injuries, chemi­
cal burns, acc idents or burns . Because of
this, all work must be performed
only by an
author ized Audi dealer or author ized Audi
Serv ice Faci lity.

-To reduce the risk of electric shock and in­

when the engine is running or is being start­

- Ignition cable
- Other components in the electronic high-
voltage ignition system
- If you must check or perform work on the
engine while it is running:
- Set the parking brake first and then select

"P" selector lever position .
- Always proceed with extreme caution so
that clothing, jewelry or long hair do not
become caught in the radiator fan, fan
belt or other moving components or do
not come into contact with hot compo­ nents. Tie back long hair before beginning

If you need to add engine oil, use an oil that is

Checking the engine oil level
The engine oil level con be checked in the Info­
tainment system
Observe the safety precautions c::> & in Working
in the engine comportment on page 314.
~ Park your vehicle on a level surface.
~ S hu t the engine off when it is warm.
~ Switch only the ignition back on.
~ Wait approx imately two minutes.
~ Select in the Infotainment system: the I MENU I
button > Vehicle > left control button > Service
& checks
> Oil level.
~ Read the oi l level in the display. Add engine oil
if the bar in the oil leve l indicator is just before
"min"

The engine oi l level must not be under the
"min" marking, as th is w ill increase the risk of
engine damage.
(D Tips
The oil leve l indicator in the display is only an
informational display.
If the oil leve l is too
l ow, a min imum oil warning appears in the in­
strument cluster. Add oil and close the hood.
The current oil level is displayed in the Info­
tainment system the next time the ignition is
switched on .
(D Tips
The engine oil consumption may be up to
0.5 quart/600 miles (0.5 liter/1,000 km), de­
pending on driv ing sty le and operat ing cond i­
tions. Consumption may be higher dur ing the
first 3,000 miles (5,000 km). Because of this,
the engine o il level must be checked regular­
l y . It is best to check each time you refuel
your vehicle and before long drives.
- In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, a ll
internal combustion engines consume acer ­
tain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies
from engine to engine and may change sig­
nifica ntly over the life of the engine. Typ i­
cally, eng ines with a specified break-in peri­
od consume more oil during the break-in pe­
r iod than they consume after oil cons ump­
t ion has stabilized.
- Under normal conditions, the rate of oil
consumption depends on the quality and
viscos ity of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per
min ute) at which the engine is operated, the
ambient temperature and road conditions.
Further factors are the amount of oil dilu­
tion from water condensation or fue l resi­
due and the oxidation level of the oil. As any
eng ine is subject to wear as m ileage builds
up, the oil consumption may increase over
time until replacement of worn components
may become necessary.

Checking and Filling
-With all these variables coming into play,
no standard rate of o il consumption can be
established or specified. There is no alterna­
tive to checking the oil level regularly and
frequently.
- If you have the impression your engine con­
sumes excessive amounts of oil, we recom­
mend that you consult an authorized Audi
dealer to have the cause of your concern properly diagnosed . Keep in mind that the
accurate measurement of oil consumption
requires great care and may take some
time. An authorized Audi dealer has instruc­
tions about how to measure oil consump­
tion accurately.

engine components . This increases the risk

- You must seal the cap on the oil filler open­
ing correctly so that oil does not leak out
onto the hot engine and exhaust system
when the engine is running, because this is
a fire hazard.
-Always clean skin thoroughly if it comes into
contact with engine oil.
- Engine oil is poisonous and must be kept
out of reach of children.
- Store the engine oil securely in the original
container.

- If the message II Please reduce oil level
appears, there is too much oil in the engine
and there is a risk of catalytic converter and
engine damage. Do not start the engine.
Contact an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility to have excess
engine oil extracted if necessary.
- Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does
not cover damage or malfunctions due to
failure to follow recommended mainte­
nance and use requirements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty &
Maintenance booklet.
- Use only a high quality engine oil that ex­
pressly complies with the Audi oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's engine. Using any other oil can cause serious engine
damage .
- Do not mix any additional lubricants into
the engine oil. Damage caused by such addi­
tives is not covered by the warranty .
@ For the sake of the environment
-Oil should never enter the sewer system or
come into contact with the ground .

Vehicle battery
The term "vehicle battery" refers to the 12 Volt
battery in your vehicle.
Not running the vehicle for long periods of
time
If you do not drive your vehicle for severa l days or
weeks, electrical equ ipment is gradually sca led
back or switched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures the vehicle will be able to start after long
periods of
time<=> page 145 . Some convenience
funct ions, such as interior lighting or power seat
adjustment, may not be available under certain
circumstances . These convenience functions will
be available again once you switch t he ignition on
and start the engine .
Even when electrical equipment is switched off,
the equipm ent can still drain the vehicle battery
if the vehicl e is not driven for long periods of
time. Deep draining results in a chemical reaction
that destroys the inside of the vehicle battery.
The vehicle battery must be charged every month
to reduce the risk of this happening
<=> page 323.

Winter operation
Cold weather places higher demands on the vehi­
cle battery. This results in reduced starting abili­
ty. Have the vehicle battery checked by an au­
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service
Fac il ity before the cold time of year .

- Do not connect or disconnect the charging
cable wh ile charging because this increases
the risk of an explos ion.

- Read all of the manufacturer's instructions
for the charger before charging the vehicle battery.

To reduce the risk of lime scale deposits on the
spray no zzles, use clean water with low amounts
of calcium . Always add w indow cleaner to the wa­
ter . When the outside tempe ratures are cold, an
anti-freez ing agent sho uld be added to t he water
so that it does not free ze.
@ Note
- The concentration of ant i-freez ing agent
must be adjusted to the ve hicle operat ing
conditio ns in the respective cl imate . A con­
c en tration that is too high can lead to vehi­
cle d am age .
