Driving with a trailer
General information
Your veh icle is primari ly intended for transport­
ing peop le and luggage. Howeve r, if you dr ive
with a tra iler , follow the techn ica l requirements ,
the operation and driving tips, and the lega l reg ­
ulations.
Dr iving w ith a trailer affects the vehicle 's fuel
consumpt ion, performance and wear. It a lso re­
quires higher concentration from the driver .
A WARNING
Do not transport any people in a trailer due to
the risk of fatal injury .
Technical requirements
Certain requirements must be met when towing
a trailer.
Trailer hitch
Only use a trailer hitch with a removab le ball
h itch mount and ball h itch. The tra ile r hitc h must
be pe rm it t ed for the vehicle, the tra iler and the
permitted tota l weight of the trailer being
pu lled . Above all, it must be secure ly and safe ly
attached to the vehicle trailer.
Never mo unt a t rai ler hitch on the bumper. The
trai ler hitc h must be mounted in a way that does
not impair the function of the bumper. Do not
make any changes to the exhaust system and the
brake system.
Check regu larly if the trai ler hitc h is securely
mounted . A lways follow the instructions given by
the trai ler hitch manufacturer .
Trailer brakes
If t he tra ile r has its own bra ke system, then fol­
low the manufacturer specifica tions. Howeve r,
the brake system on the trai ler must never be
connected to the vehicle brake system.

Engine cooling system
D riving w ith a tra ile r means a higher load on t he
engine and the cooling sys tem. The coo ling sys­
tem must be designed for additiona l load and
contain enoug h

A WARNING -
- Never mount a "weight -distributing" or
"load-balancing" trailer coupler as the trail­
er hitch. The ve hicle was not des igned for
these types of tra iler h itches. The tra iler
h itch can malfunction and t he tra ile r can
b reak off from the vehicle.
- If t he tra ile r i s equ ipped w ith elect ronic
brakes, these brakes can not be activated by
a facto ry-installed control system, whi ch in­
creases the r isk of an accide nt.
- To red uce the r is k of injury, always remove
the ball hitch mount if no tra ile r is mo unt ­
ed.
@ Note
L onge r incl ines cannot be dr iven without a
su itab le cooli ng system, especially if the out­
s ide temperatu res a re high. ot herwise, this
i nc reases the risk of eng ine da mage.
Operating instructions
Several things must be noted when towing a
trailer.
Towing capacity
The permitted towing capacity must not be ex ­
ceeded under any
circumstances ~ page 370.
You can dr ive up larger inclines if you are not us­
i ng the maximum towing capacity.
The towing capacities given only apply to e leva ­
tions up to 3,200 ft (1,000 m) above sea level. As
the e levation increases, the engine power de­
creases due to the decreasing air pressures. T his
reduces the hill climb ing ability and towing ca­
pac ity . For every additional 3,200
ft (1,000 m),
t h e maximum permitted tow ing weight must be
r educed by app roximately 10% . T he pe rm itted
tow ing weight is t he comb ined we igh t of the
( loaded) vehicle and the (loaded) trailer .

Engine oil
If the engine oil level is too low
If you need to add engine oil, use an oil that is
listed on the sticker.

I f the recommended engine oil is not available,
in an emergency you may add a maximum of 1
quart

Checking the engine oil level
The engine oil level con be checked in the Info­
tainment system
Observe the safety precautions c::> & in Working
in the engine comportment on page 314.
~ Park your vehicle on a level surface.
~ S hu t the engine off when it is warm.
~ Switch only the ignition back on.
~ Wait approx imately two minutes.
~ Select in the Infotainment system: the I MENU I
button > Vehicle > left control button > Service
& checks
> Oil level.
~ Read the oi l level in the display. Add engine oil
if the bar in the oil leve l indicator is just before
"min"
c::> page 318.
Checking and Filling
@ Note
The engine oi l level must not be under the
"min" marking, as th is w ill increase the risk of
engine damage.
(D Tips
The oil leve l indicator in the display is only an
informational display.
If the oil leve l is too
l ow, a min imum oil warning appears in the in­
strument cluster. Add oil and close the hood.
The current oil level is displayed in the Info­
tainment system the next time the ignition is
switched on .
(D Tips
The engine oil consumption may be up to
0.5 quart/600 miles (0.5 liter/1,000 km), de­
pending on driv ing sty le and operat ing cond i­
tions. Consumption may be higher dur ing the
first 3,000 miles (5,000 km). Because of this,
the engine o il level must be checked regular­
l y . It is best to check each time you refuel
your vehicle and before long drives.
- In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, a ll
internal combustion engines consume acer ­
tain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies
from engine to engine and may change sig­
nifica ntly over the life of the engine. Typ i­
cally, eng ines with a specified break-in peri­
od consume more oil during the break-in pe­
r iod than they consume after oil cons ump­
t ion has stabilized.
- Under normal conditions, the rate of oil
consumption depends on the quality and
viscos ity of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per
min ute) at which the engine is operated, the
ambient temperature and road conditions.
Further factors are the amount of oil dilu­
tion from water condensation or fue l resi­
due and the oxidation level of the oil. As any
eng ine is subject to wear as m ileage builds
up, the oil consumption may increase over
time until replacement of worn components
may become necessary.

Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta­
tion .
Before you check anyt hing in the eng ine compart ­
ment,
alwa ys read and heed all WARNING S¢.&.
in Working in the engine comportment on
page 314.
The engine oil must be changed accord ing to the
intervals specified in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet . This is very important because the
lubricat ing propert ies of oil diminish gradually
during normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oi l should
be changed more frequently. Change oil more of­
ten if you drive most ly short distances, operate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and-go traffic condit ions, or have your vehi­
cle where temperatures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
look dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. Th is is normal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re­
qu ired, we strongly recommend that you have
your oil c hanged by an authorized
A udi de aler or
a qualified service station .
If you choos e to change your o il y our self , please
note the following important information:

-Wear eye p rotection.
-To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine
o il, let the eng ine cool down to the touch.

-Whe n removing the o il drain plug with your
fingers, stay as far away as poss ible. A lways

keep your forearm pa rallel to the ground to
he lp prevent hot oil from running down your
arm.
-Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one la rge enough to hold at
least the tota l amount of oil in your engine.
-Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of children.
-Continuous contact with used engine o il is
harmful to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoroughly with soap
a nd water.
@ Note
Never mix oil additives with yo ur engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adverse ly affect your Audi limited New Vehi­
cle Warranty.
@) For the sake of the environment
-Before chang ing your oi l, first ma ke sure
you know where you can properly d ispose of
the used oil.
-Always dispose of used engine o il properly.
Do not dump it on garden so il, wooded
areas, into open streams o r down sewage
dra ins.
-Recycle used eng ine o il by tak ing it to a used
eng ine oi l collec tion fac ility in yo ur area, or
contact a se rvice station.
Cooling system
Coolant
The eng ine cooling system is fi lled w ith a mixture
of purified water and coolant additive at the fac­
tory. This coolant must not be not changed.

mend occasionally checking the coolant leve l
manual ly.
If you must add coo lant, use a mixture of water
and coolant additive. Mixing the coolant add itive
with dist illed water is recommended.

Coolant addit ive
The coolan t additive is made of anti-freezi ng and
corrosion protection agents. Only use the fo llow ­
ing coolant additives . These additives may be
mixed w ith each other.

The amount of coolant additive that needs to be
mixed with water depends on the climate where
the vehicle will be operated. If the coolant addi­
tive percentage is too low, the coolant can freeze
and damage the engine.

- Before the start of winter, have an author­
i zed Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service
Fac ility check if the coolant additive in your
vehicle matches the percentage appropriate
fo r the climate. This is especially important
when driving in co lde r climates.
- If the appropriate coolant additive is not
available in an emergency, do no t add any
othe r addi tive. You cou ld d amage the en­
gine. If this happens, only use water and re­
store the correct mixture ra tio with the
specified coolant additive as soon as possi­
ble.
- Only refill with new coo lant.

from the coolant boili ng through overheating
and being pushed out of the cooling system.
.&_ WARNING
-The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not open the coolant expansion tank cap
when the eng ine is hot. This inc reases the
risk of burns.
- The coo lant add itive and the coolant can be
dangerous to you r healt h. For this reason,
keep t he coolant i n the o rigi nal container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poiso ning.
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember t hat the radiator fan can sw itch
o n even if the ign ition is swi tched off, which
increases the risk of i njury.
@ Note
Do not add coo lant if the expansion tank is
empty. There may be a ir in the coo ling sys­
t em, wh ich increases t he risk of engi ne dam­
age . If this is the case, do not continue driv­
ing . See an authorized Aud i dea le r or a uthor ­
ize d Aud i Service Fac ility for assistance .
