On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your em ission control system. Each monitored
component in your eng ine system has been as­
signed a code. In case of a ma lfunction, the com­
ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MI L light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on -board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­ erly closed (only vehicles with gasoline engine)

In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­ nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD) .
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release¢ fig. 22.

Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights.
A warn ing s ignal will sound at the same time.
The indicator lights and messages in the instru­
ment cluster display can be covered by other dis­
plays. To show them again, select the second tab
with the mult ifunct ion steer ing
wheel ¢ page 13.
If there are several malfunctions, you can display
them one at a time using the thumbwheel.
Some indicator lights in the display can display in
several co lors.

If the. or d indicator light turns on, check
the message in the instr ument cluster.
Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly as a function
check when you sw itch the ignition on. These sys ­
tems are marked with
a./ in the fo llowing tab les.
If one of these indicator lights does not turn on,
there is a malfunction in that system.
Your vehicle has either a monochrome display or
a multicolored display, depending on vehicle
equipment. Some indicator lights appear white
on a monochrome display .

tor lever position and set the parking brake.

airbags

Safety belts are important to help keep front
seat occupants in the proper seated position so
that airbags can unfold properly and provide sup­ p lemental protection in a frontal collision.
The front airbags are designed to provide addi­
tional protect ion for the chest and face of the
driver and the front seat passenger when:
- safety belts are worn properly
- the seats have been positioned so that the
oc-
cupant is properly seated as far as possible
from the airbag
- and the head restraints have been properly ad-
justed
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye w ith
great force, things you have on your lap or have p laced on the seat could become dangerous pro­
jectiles, and be pushed into you if the airbag in­ flates .
When an airbag deploys, fine dust is released.
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the
veh icle. This dust is made up mostly of a powder
used to lubricate the airbags as they deploy . It
could irr itate skin .
It is important to remember that while the sup­ plemental airbag system is designed to reduce
the likelihood of ser ious injuries, other injuries,
for example swelling, bruising and minor abra-

sions, can also happen when airbags inflate. Air­
bags do not protect the arms or the lower parts
of the body. Front airbags supp lement the three­
point safety belts only in some frontal collisions
in which the vehicle dece leration is high enough
to deploy the airbags .
Front airbags will not depl oy :
- if the ignition is switched off when a crash oc-
curs
- in side co llisions
- in rear-end coll isions
- in rollovers
- when the crash deceleration measured by the
ai rbag system is less than the m inimum thresh­
old needed for airbag dep loyment as registe red
by the electronic control un it
The front pass enge r airbag also w ill not
deploy:
- when the fron t passenger seat is not occupied,
- when the e lectr ical capacitance measured by
t he capacit ive passenger detection system for
the front passenge r seat ind icates that the pas­
senger side frontal airbag m ust be switched off
by the electronic control unit (the

the windshield. Otherwise the paint could be
damaged .
Opening the hood

-Never open the hood when there is steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned. Wai t until no steam or coolan t is
escaping.
- For safety reasons, the hood must always be
closed securely while driving . Because of
this, always check the hood after closing it
to make sure it is latched correctly . The
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted .
- If you notice that the hood is not latched
while you are driving, stop immediately and
close it, because driving when the hood is
not latched increases the risk of an accident.
