WARNING
Please be aware that there is no sound fromthe engine when the vehicle is being poweredby the electric motor and it may be difficult todetect by children, pedestrians, cyclists andanimals. This is especially true at low speeds.
High-voltage electrical current WARNING
A number of electrical components in theXC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid usehigh-voltage current and can be extremelydangerous if handled incorrectly. These com-ponents and any orange wiring in the vehiclemay only be handled by trained and qualifiedVolvo service technicians.
Hybrid-unique functions
Drive modes
Different drive modes can be selected while driv-ing, e.g., electric power only or a combination ofelectric and gasoline power. The vehicle calcu-lates the optimal combination of drivability, drivingexperience, environmental impact and fuel econ-omy for the selected drive mode. See also thearticle "Drive modes" for additional information.
Instrument panel
In certain driving situations, hybrid-unique infor-mation may be displayed in the instrument panel, such as: a hybrid battery gauge (current chargelevel), the current drive mode, a symbol that illu-minates when the gasoline engine is being used,a Hybrid Guide and the level of energy regenera-tion.
Preconditioning
In order to function optimally, the hybrid battery(and its related electrical systems) and the gaso-line engine (and its drive systems) should be atthe correct operating temperature. The hybridbattery's capacity is reduced considerably if it is
too cold or hot. Preconditioning prepares thevehicle's drive systems and passenger compart-ment before the vehicle is driven to help reducewear and energy consumption.
Charging the hybrid battery
CAUTION
Never connect the charging cable if there is arisk of thunderstorms/lightning.
The XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid uses alithium-ion battery that can be charged in severalways:
•A charging cable can be connected from thevehicle to a 110-volt AC socket. Chargingtime depends on the strength of the current.
•When the brakes are applied lightly, the elec-tric motor is used for engine braking, duringwhich the vehicle's kinetic energy is conver-ted into electric current that is used to helprecharge the hybrid battery.
•The hybrid battery is also recharged to a cer-tain extent when the gasoline engine is inoperation.

IntelliSafe—driver support
IntelliSafe is Volvo's philosophy regarding vehi-cle safety. It encompasses a number of systems, both standard and optional, that are designed tohelp make driving and traveling in a Volvo safer.
Support
Systems that help make driving safer are an inte-gral part of IntelliSafe. These include optionalfeatures such as Adaptive Cruise Control* thathelps maintain a set distance to a vehicle ahead,Park Assist Pilot*, which assists in parking thevehicle, Cross Traffic Alert*, Blind SpotInformation*, etc.
Accident prevention
Systems such as City Safety are designed toautomatically apply the brakes in situations inwhich the driver does not have time to react.Lane Keeping Aid* alerts the drive if the vehicleinadvertently crosses a lane's/road's side markerline.
Protection
The vehicle is equipped with e.g., seat belt pre-tensioners that pull the seat belts taut in criticalsituations when there is a collision risk andnumerous airbags designed to help provide cush-ioning if certain types of collisions should occur.

WARNING
•Never try to open or repair any compo-nents of the IC system. This should bedone only by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.
•Never hang heavy items from the ceilinghandles. This could impede deploymentof the Inflatable Curtain.
•The cargo area and rear seat should notbe loaded to a level higher than 4 in.(10 cm) below the upper edge of the rearside windows. Objects placed higher thanthis level could impede the function ofthe Inflatable Curtain.
•In order for the IC to provide its best pro-tection, both front seat occupants andboth outboard rear seat occupants shouldsit in an upright position with the seat beltproperly fastened; adults using the seatbelt and children using the proper childrestraint system.

Safety mode
As a safety precaution after a collision, the func-tionality of some of the vehicle's systems may bereduced.
If the vehicle has been involved in a collision, thetext Safety mode may appear in the informationdisplay.
NOTE
This text can only be shown if the display isundamaged and the vehicle's electrical sys-tem is intact.
Safety mode is a feature that is triggered if oneor more of the safety systems such as the front/side airbags inflatable curtain, etc., or one ormore of the seat belt pretensioners has deployed. The collision may have damaged an importantfunction in the vehicle, such as the fuel lines, sensors for one of the safety systems, the brakesystem, etc.
WARNING
•Never attempt to repair the vehicle your-self or to reset the electrical system afterthe vehicle has displayed Safety mode. This could result in injury or improper sys-tem function.
•Restoring the vehicle to normal operatingstatus should only be done by a trainedand qualified Volvo service technician.
•After Safety mode has been displayed, ifyou detect the odor of fuel vapor, or seeany signs of fuel leakage, do not attemptto start the vehicle. Leave the vehicleimmediately.

Trip computer
The trip computer registers and calculates infor-mation such as distance driven, fuel consump-tion and average speed. This information is dis-played in the instrument panel.
To help promote fuel efficient driving, the tripcomputer provides readings for current and aver-age fuel consumption.
The trip computer includes the followinggauges:
•Trip odometers
•Odometer
•Current fuel consumption
•Distance to empty
•Tourist (alternative speedometer)
Trip odometer
There are two trip odometers: TM and TA. Duringa drive, the trip odometer registers:
•Mileage
•Driving time
•Average speed
•Average fuel consumption
The values displayed are those since the lasttime the trip odometer was reset.
Odometer
The odometer registers the vehicle's total mile-age and cannot be reset.
Current fuel consumption
This gauge shows the current fuel consumption. This reading is updated once a second.
Distance to empty
This function shows the approximate distancethat can be driven on the fuel remaining in thetank.
The calculation is based on average fuel con-sumption during the last 20 miles (30 km) ofdriving and the amount of fuel remaining in thetank.
When the gauge displays "----", there is very littleuseable fuel remaining in the tank; refuel as soonas possible.
