Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) helps reducewheel spin, counteract skidding and to generallyhelp improve directional stability.
A pulsating sound will be audi-ble when the system is activelyoperating and is normal. Accel-eration may also be slightlyslower than normal.
WARNING
ESC is a supplementary aid and cannot dealwith all situations or road conditions.
The driver is always responsible for operatingthe vehicle in a safe manner in accordancewith current traffic regulations.
ESC consists of the following functions:
•Traction control
•Spin control
•Active Yaw Control
•Engine Drag Control
•Trailer Stability Assist
Traction control
This function is designed to help reduce wheelspin by transferring power from a drive wheel that
begins to lose traction to the wheel on the oppo-site side of the vehicle (on the same axle).
Spin control
This function is designed to help prevent thedrive wheels from spinning while the vehicle isaccelerating.
Active Yaw Control
At low speeds, this function helps maintain direc-tional stability by braking one or more of thewheels if the vehicle shows a tendency to skid orslide laterally.
Engine Drag Control EDC
EDC helps keep the engine running if the wheelsshow a tendency to lock, e.g., when shifting downin the manual shifting mode or while using theengine's braking function on a slippery surface. Ifthe wheels were to lock, the vehicle wouldbecome more difficult to steer.
Trailer Stability Assist * 1
TSA helps stabilize a vehicle that is towing atrailer when the vehicle and trailer have begun tosway.
This system is automatically deactivated if thedriver selects Sport mode.

Distance Alert*
Distance Alert is a function that alerts the driverif the time interval to the vehicle ahead is tooshort.
Distance Alert is active at speeds above approxi-mately 20 mph (30 km/h) and only reacts to avehicle ahead that is driving in the same direc-tion. No information is provided for vehicles driv-ing toward you, moving very slowly, or at a stand-still.

A warning light in the windshield glows steadily ifyour vehicle is closer to the one ahead than theset time interval.
NOTE
Strong sunlight, reflections, extreme light con-trasts, the use of sunglasses, or if the driver isnot looking straight ahead may make the vis-ual warning signal in the windshield difficult tosee.
NOTE
Distance Alert only monitors distance to thevehicle ahead while Adaptive Cruise Control isin standby mode or off.
WARNING
Distance Alert only indicates the distance tothe vehicle ahead. It does not affect thespeed of your vehicle.
Head-up-display *

In vehicle is equipped with the head-up display*,the symbol in the windshield will only appear ifthe distance to the vehicle ahead is shorter thanthe preset value. However, the Show DriverSupport In Head-Up Display function has tobe activated in the Settings menu. See the article"Head-up display" for additional information.

Passing Assistance with AdaptiveCruise Control or Pilot Assist-2
ACC or Pilot Assist can assist the driver whenpassing other vehicles.
How passing assistance works
When ACC or Pilot Assist is following anothervehicle and the driver indicates that he/she isabout to pass that vehicle by using the left turnsignal, ACC or Pilot Assist will begin acceleratingtoward the vehicle ahead before your vehicle hasmoved into the passing lane.
The function will then delay a speed reduction toavoid early braking as your vehicle approachesthe slower-moving vehicle.
The function is active until your vehicle haspassed the other vehicle.
WARNING
Be aware that this function may be activatedin situations other than when passing a vehi-cle, such as if the turn signal is used to indi-cate a lane change or to indicate a turn. Thevehicle will accelerate briefly.
Using passing assistance
To activate passing assistance:
•Your vehicle (ACC or Pilot Assist) must befollowing another vehicle (the target vehicle).
•Current speed must be at least approx.45 mph (70 km/h ).
•The speed set for ACC or Pilot Assist mustbe high enough to safely pass the vehicleahead.
Starting passing assistance
To start a passing assistance sequence:
•Activate the left turn signal.
Passing assistance limitations
WARNING
The driver should be prepared for suddenchanges when passing assistance is used. Incertain cases, there may be undesired accel-eration.
Certain situations should be avoided, such as:
•If the vehicle is approaching an exit to theleft or a left turn.
•If the vehicle ahead slows down beforeyour vehicle has moved into the passinglane.
•Traffic in the passing lane slows down.
Passing assistance in these situations can bedeactivated by putting ACC or Pilot Assist instandby mode.

Changing target vehicles andautomatic braking with AdaptiveCruise Control (ACC)
At certain speeds, Adaptive Cruise Control canchange target vehicles and automatically applythe brakes.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) -limitations
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) functionality maybe limited in certain situations.
Steep roads and/or heavy loads
Adaptive Cruise Control is primarily intended foruse on relatively level roads. The function may notbe able to maintain the correct time interval tothe vehicle ahead when driving down steep hills.The driver should be attentive and prepared toapply the brakes in these situations.
Do not use Adaptive Cruise Control when thevehicle is transporting a heavy load or if it is tow-ing a trailer.

•The Off Road drive mode cannot beselected if Adaptive Cruise Control is acti-vated.

Pilot Assist-1 limitations
Pilot Assist functionality may be limited in certainsituations.
Pilot Assist is designed to help the driver in anumber of situations. However, the driver alwayshas the primary responsibility for maintaining asafe distance to other vehicles and for keepingthe vehicle in its proper traffic lane.
WARNING
Pilot Assist is not a collision avoidance sys-tem. The driver is always responsible forsteering or applying the brakes if the systemdoes not detect another vehicle.
Do not use Pilot Assist in demanding drivingconditions such as city driving or other heavytraffic situations, in slippery conditions, whenthere is a great deal of water or slush on theroad, during heavy rain or snow, in poor visibil-ity, on winding roads or on highway on- or off-ramps.
In certain situations, it may be difficult for PilotAssist to assist the driver correctly or to deac-tivate automatically. In such cases, it is advisa-ble not to use Pilot Assist. Examples of suchsituations may be:
•the lane's side market lines are missing,badly faded or cross each other.
•the division of lanes is not clear, e.g.,when a line divides or merges withanother, at exits or if there are many roadsigns/markers.
•there are edges or other lines on or nearthe lane, e.g., curbs, cracks, repairedareas, sharp shadows, etc.
•the lane is narrow or winding.
•the lane is at the top of a hill, on anuneven road surface or over a bump.
•bad weather conditions (rain, snow, fog,slush, poor visibility, backlighting, etc).
The driver should also be aware that PilotAssist has the following limitations:
•High curbs, barriers and temporary obsta-cles (cones, barriers etc) may not bedetected or could be detected incorrectlyas side marker lines, which may create arisk of collision. The driver must ensure asafe distance to these obstacles.
•The camera or radar sensor may not beable to detect objects if there are pot-holes or if there are stationary objectspartially or completely blocking the road.
•Pilot Assist does not "see" pedestrians,animals, etc.
•Pilot Assist's steering capacity is limitedand may not always be able to help thedriver keep the vehicle in the lane.
The driver can always take action to override PilotAssist.

Auto-braking can be cancelled if the driverpresses hard on the accelerator pedal.
When City Safety applies the brakes, the brakelights will illuminate.

City Safety warning level settings
City Safety is always activated but the function'swarning distance can be adjusted.
NOTE
City Safety cannot be turned off and activatesautomatically each time the engine/electricmotor is started.
Setting a warning level (distance)
The distance set for warnings determines thesystem's responsiveness and sets the distance atwhich visual, audible and tangible (haptic) warn-ings will be triggered.
To do so:
1.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
2.Tap My CarIntelliSafeCity Safety.
3.Choose among Earlier, Normal or Later.
Begin by choosing Earlier. If too many warningsare given, change to Normal.
If the driver feels that warnings are given toooften, the warning level can be lowered. Thismeans that warnings will be provided later, result-ing in fewer warnings being given.
The setting Later should only used in exceptionalcircumstances, e.g., for a more dynamic drivingstyle.
WARNING
•No automatic system can be guaranteedto function 100% correctly in all situa-tions. For that reason, never test CitySafety by driving toward a person orobject. This could result in serious injuryor death.
•Even if the setting Earlier has beenselected, warnings may be perceived asbeing given late, e.g., if the difference inspeed is great or if the vehicle aheadbrakes suddenly.
•City Safety can provide a warning for apotential collision but it can never shortenthe driver's reaction time.
•To help make City Safety as effective aspossible, always using the setting Earlieris recommended.
NOTE
•Due to local traffic regulations in certainmarkets, RCW will not activate the rearturn signals. That part of the function willbe deactivated.
•The use of the rear turn signals will alsobe deactivated if the City Safety warninglevel is set at Later. See also the section"Setting a warning level (distance)" in thearticle "City Safety settings."

Park Assist*
The Park Assist system is designed to assist youwhen driving into parking spaces, garages, etc.An audible signal and symbols in the instrumentpanel and center display indicate the distance tothe object.

The center display shows an overview of the vehi-cle in relation to objects that have been detected.
The highlighted sector shows which of the sen-sors has detected the object. The closer thehighlighted sector is to the vehicle symbol, thecloser the actual object is to your vehicle.
The Park Assist system uses an intermittent tonethat pulses faster as you come closer to anobject. Sound from the infotainment system willbe temporarily turned down.
The audible signals for objects in front of and tothe sides are active while the vehicle is movingand will stop after the vehicle has been stoppedfor approx. 2 seconds. The audible signals forobjects behind the vehicle are active even whenthe vehicle has stopped moving.
The audible signal becomes constant when youare within approximately 1 ft (30 cm) of an objectand the highlighted sensor field is filled in.
While an audible signal is being given, its volumelevel can be raised/lowered using the >II controlin the center console or can be adjusted in thecenter displays Top view under Settings.
NOTE
Audible alerts will only be provided for objectsthat are directly in the vehicle's path.
WARNING
Park Assist is an information system, NOT asafety system. This system is designed to bea supplementary aid when parking the vehicle.It is not, however, intended to replace the driv-er's attention and judgement.
Rear park assist
The system's rear sensors are activated automat-ically when the engine is started and are active ifthe vehicle rolls rearward with the gear selectorin N or if R has been selected.
The distance monitored behind the vehicle isapproximately 5 ft (1.5 m). The audible signalcomes from the rear speakers.
The rear sensors will be deactivated automaticallywhen towing a trailer if Volvo genuine trailer wir-ing is used. If a non-Volvo trailer hitch is beingused, it may be necessary to switch off the sys-tem manually.
