ShiftlockWhen your vehicle is parked, the gear selector is locked in the P (Park) position. To release the selector from this position, the ignition must be inmode
II (p. 80) or the engine must be running.
Depress the brake pedal, press the button on the front side of the gear selector and move the selector from P (Park).
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)The ABS system performs a brief self-diagnostic test when the engine has been started and driverreleases the brake pedal. Another automatic testmay be performed when the vehicle first reachesa speed of approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). Thebrake pedal will pulsate several times and asound may be audible from the ABS controlmodule. This is normal.
Fuel filler doorPress the button on the light switch panel (seethe illustration in Refueling – opening/closingfuel filler door (p. 276)) when the vehicle is at astandstill to unlock the fuel filler door. It willrelock when closed and there will be an audibleclick.

Change of ownership
When the vehicle changes owners, all personal settings should be reset to the factory defaults.
To reset, press the MY CAR button in the center
console followed by OK/MENU and select
SettingsReset to factory settings.
User data e.g., for apps, the web browser and for personal settings in menus such as the climatesystem and vehicle settings should be reset tofactory defaults. For vehicles equipped with the optional Volvo On Call with Sensus Connect (VOC), personal set-tings stored in the vehicle should be deleted, seeChanging ownership of a vehicle with Volvo OnCall.

Crash event data
This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR isto record, in certain crash or near crash-like sit-uations, such as an air bag deployment or hittinga road obstacle, data that will assist in under-standing how a vehicle's systems performed.The EDR is designed to record data related tovehicle dynamics and safety systems for a shortperiod of time, typically 30 seconds or less. TheEDR in this vehicle is designed to record suchdata as:
• How various systems in your vehicle were operating;
• Whether or not the driver and passengersafety belts were buckled/fastened;
• How far (if at all) the driver was depressingthe accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,
• How fast the vehicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better understand-ing of the circumstances in which crashes andinjuries occur. EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs; no data arerecorded by the EDR under normal driving condi-tions and the EDR never registers who is drivingthe vehicle or the location of a crash or a nearcrash-like situation. However, other parties, suchas law enforcement, could combine the EDR datawith the type of personally identifying data rou-

Occupant safety reminders
How safely you drive doesn't depend on how old you are but rather on:
• How well you see.
• Your ability to concentrate.
• How quickly you make decisions understress to avoid an accident.
The following suggestions are intended to helpyou cope with the ever changing traffic environ-ment. •
Never drink and drive.
• If you are taking any medication, consult yourphysician about its potential effects on yourdriving abilities.
• Take a driver-retraining course.
• Have your eyes checked regularly.

Seat belts – general
Seat belts should always be worn by all occu- pants of your vehicle. Children should be prop-erly restrained, using an infant, car, or boosterseat determined by age, weight and height. Volvo also believes no child should sit in the front seat of a vehicle.
Adjusting the seat belt
Most states and provinces make it mandatory for occupants of a vehicle to use seat belts.
Seat belt pretensionersAll seat belts are equipped with pretensionersthat reduce slack in the belts. These pretension-ers are triggered in situations where the front orside impact airbags deploy, and in certain impactsfrom the rear. The front seat belts also include atension reducing device which, in the event of a collision, limits the peak forces exerted by theseat belt on the occupant.
Seat belt maintenanceCheck periodically that the seat belts are in goodcondition. Use water and a mild detergent forcleaning. Check seat belt mechanism function asfollows: attach the seat belt and pull rapidly onthe strap.
WARNING
Never use a seat belt for more than one occupant. Never wear the shoulder portion ofthe belt under the arm, behind the back orotherwise out of position. Such use couldcause injury in the event of an accident. Asseat belts lose much of their strength whenexposed to violent stretching, they should bereplaced after any collision, even if theyappear to be undamaged.

•
Never repair the belt yourself; have this work done by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician only.
• Any device used to induce slack into theshoulder belt portion of the three-pointbelt system will have a detrimental effecton the amount of protection available toyou in the event of a collision.
• The seat back should not be tilted too farback. The shoulder belt must be taut inorder to function properly.
• Do not use child safety seats or childbooster cushions/backrests in the frontpassenger's seat. We also recommendthat children who have outgrown thesedevices sit in the rear seat with the seatbelt properly fastened.

Seat belts – buckling/unbuckling Seat belts should be used by all occupants in the vehicle when it is in motion.
Buckling a seat beltPull the belt out far enough to insert the latch plate into the receptacle until a distinct click isheard. The seat belt retractor is normally"unlocked" and you can move freely, providedthat the shoulder belt is not pulled out too far.
Seat belt retractor
The seat belt retractor will lock up in the fol- lowing situations:
• if the belt is pulled out rapidly
• during braking and acceleration
• if the vehicle is leaning excessively
• when driving in turns
• if the Automatic Locking Retractor/Emer-gency Locking Retractor (ALR/ELR) is acti-vated
NOTE
Each seat belt (except for the driver's belt) is equipped with the ALR/ELR function, whichis designed to help keep the seat belt taut.ALR/ELR activates if the seat belt is pulledout as far as possible. If this is done, a soundfrom the seat belt retractor will be audible,which is normal, and the seat belt will bepulled taut and locked in place. This functionis automatically disabled when the seat belt isunbuckled and fully retracted.

When wearing the seat belt remember:
•The belt should not be twisted or turned.
• The lap section of the belt must be posi-tioned low on the hips (not pressing againstthe abdomen).
• Make sure that the shoulder belt is rolled upinto its retractor and that the shoulder andlap belts are taut.
Unbuckling the seat beltTo remove the seat belt, press the red section onthe seat belt receptacle. Before exiting the vehi-cle, check that the seat belt retracts fully afterbeing unbuckled. If necessary, guide the beltback into the retractor slot.

Seat belt reminder The seat belt reminder is intended to alert all occupants of the vehicle that their seat beltsshould be fastened before the vehicle begins tomove.

Seat belt reminder light in ceiling console
The seat belt reminder consists of an audible sig- nal, an indicator light near the rearview mirror anda symbol in the instrument panel that alert alloccupants of the vehicle to fasten their seatbelts (p. 30). The audible signal and indicatorlight will be on for several seconds from the time the ignition is switched on, regardless of
whether or not the seat belts are fastened.
If the front seat belts are unbuckled while the vehicle is in motion, the audible signal and warn-ing light will be active for a several seconds.
Rear seatsThe seat belt reminder in the rear seat has twoadditional functions: • It provides information about which seat belts are fastened in the rear seat. A message willappear in the information display when a beltis being used. This message will disappearafter several seconds or can be erased by pressing the
OK button on the left steering
wheel lever.
• It also provides a reminder if one of the occupants of the rear seat has unbuckledhis/her seat belt while the vehicle is inmotion. A visual and audible signal will begiven. These signals will stop when the seatbelt has been re-buckled or can be stopped by pressing the
OK button.
• The message
Unbelted in rear seat will
appear in the information display if one of the rear doors has been opened.
The message in the information display canalways be accessed, even if it has been erased, by pressing the OK button to display stored mes-
sages.

Seat belts – pregnancy
The seat belt should always be worn during pregnancy. However, it is crucial that it be worncorrectly.

The diagonal section should wrap over the shoul- der then be routed between the breasts and tothe side of the belly. The lap section should layflat over the thighs and as low as possible underthe belly. It must never be allowed to ride upward.Remove all slack from the belt and ensure that itfits close to the body without any twists. As a pregnancy progresses, pregnant drivers should adjust their seats and steering wheel suchthat they can easily maintain control of the vehi-cle as they drive (which means they must be ableto easily operate the foot pedals and steeringwheel). Within this context, they should strive toposition the seat with as large a distance as pos-sible between their belly and the steering wheel.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)
As an enhancement to the three-point seat
belts (p. 30), your Volvo is equipped with aSupplemental Restraint System (SRS).
Models with an analog instrument panel
Models with an digital instrument panel *
Volvo's SRS consists of seat belt pretensioners, front airbags (p. 34), side impact air-bags (p. 41), a front passenger occupantweight sensor (p. 38), and inflatable cur-tains (p. 42). All of these systems are moni-tored by the SRS control module. An SRS warn-ing light in the instrument panel (see the illustra- tion) illuminates when the ignition is in modes I
or II, and will normally go out after approximately
6 seconds if no faults are detected in the system. Where applicable, a text message will also be displayed when the SRS warning light illuminates.If this warning symbol is not functioning properly,the general warning symbol illuminates and a textmessage will be displayed.
