CAUTION If a vehicle is driven without releasing the parking brake, the brakes will overheat,resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure. If this warning is displayed, release the park- ing brake.
CAUTION  If this warning stays on and does not go out while driving, there is a danger of ineffective braking. If this happens, park the vehicle in a safe place, and contact an authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. If the brake warning display, brake warning light, and the Anti-lock braking system warning light are illuminated at the sametime, the braking force distribution function will not operate, so the vehicle may be desta- bilized during sudden braking. Avoid suddenbraking and high-speed driving. Park the vehicle in a safe place, and contact an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repairfacility of your choice. The vehicle should be brought to a halt in the following manner when brake performance is deteriorated.• Confirm that the vehicle slows down when you press down on the brake pedal harderthan usual. In some cases, the brake pedal may go all the way to the floor.
• Should the brakes fail, use engine brakingto reduce your speed and slowly apply the parking brake. Depress the brake pedal to illuminate the stop lights to alert the vehicles behind you.

1. Stop your vehicle in a safe area, put the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) posi- tion (manual transaxle), or the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position (contin-uously variable transmission (CVT)), and pull the parking brake lever. 2. Press the SPEECH button (except for vehicles with Mitsubishi Multi-Commu- nication System) or PICK-UP button (for vehicles with Mitsubishi Multi-Commu-nication System). 3. Say “Voice training.” 4. The voice guide will say “This operationmust be performed in a quiet environment while the vehicle is stopped. See the owner’s manual for the list of requiredtraining phrases. Press and release the SPEECH button when you are ready to begin. Press the HANG-UP button to can-cel at any time.” Press the SPEECH button to start the speaker enrollment process.
5. The voice guide will prompt for phrase 1. Repeat the corresponding phrase listed in table “Enrollment commands” on page5-160. The system will register your voice and then move on to the registration of thenext command. Continue the process until all phrases have been registered.
6. When all enrollment commands have been read out, the voice guide will say “Speaker enrollment is complete.” The system will then end the speaker enroll-ment process and return to the main menu.

You can turn a voice model registered with the speaker enrollment function on and off whenever you want. You can also retrain the system.Use the following procedure to perform these actions. 1.  To repeat the most recent voice training command, press and release the SPEECH button.  If you press the HANG-UP button anytime during the process, the system will beep and stop the speaker enrollment process.
NOTE

3. If you have completed a speaker enroll- ment process once already, the voice guide will say either “Enrollment is enabled. Would you like to disable orretrain?” or “Enrollment is disabled. Would you like to enable or retrain?” 4. When enrollment is “enabled,” the voicemodel is on; when enrollment is “dis- abled,” the voice model is off. Say the command that fits your needs. For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always check for the following:  Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly (with children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors and lift- gate are locked.  Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while still keeping good visibil- ity, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls.Check the instrument panel indicators and multi-information display for any possible problem. In the same way, the front passenger seat should also be moved as far back as possi- ble. Make sure that infants and small children are properly restrained in accordance with all laws and regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode, and set the blower switch on high. Youshould be able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. Refer to “Defrosting or defogging (wind-shield, door windows)” on page 7-8, 7-13, 7-18, 7-24. Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails, glass, or other objects stuck in the tread. Look for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Checkthe wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires (including spare tire) for proper pressure. Replace your tires before they are heavilyworn out. As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk ofdamage to the tire inflation pressure sensors when the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, therefore, be performedonly by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turnsignal indicators and high-beam indicators on the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for fuel, water, oil, or other leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are correct. Also, if you can smell fuel, you needto find out why immediately and have it fixed.

On snowy roads, ice can form on the braking system, making the brakes less effective.While driving in such
conditions, pay close
attention to preceding and following vehicles and to the condition of
the road surface. From
time to time, lightly depress the brake pedal and check how effective the brakes are. It is important to take advantage of the engine braking by downshifting while driving on steep downhill roads in order to prevent the brakes from overheating.

When parking on a hill, set the parking brake,and turn the front wheels toward the curb on adownhill, or away from the curb on an uphill. If necessary, apply chocks to wheels.
Place the gearshift lever into the “R” (Reverse) position when parking on a down- hill slope, into the 1st position when parkingon an uphill slope. Be sure that the parking brake is firmly set when parked and that the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. When parking on a hill, it is important to setthe parking brake before moving the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. This pre- vents loading the parking brake against thetransaxle. When this happens, it is difficult to move the selector lever out of the “P” (PARK) position. Never leave the engi
ne running while you
take a short sleep or rest. Also, never leave the engine running in a closed or poorly ven- tilated place.
Your front bumper can be damaged if you scrape it over curbs or parking stop blocks.Be careful when traveling up or down steep slopes where your bumper can scrape the road. More effort could be required to turn the steering wheel. Refer to “Electric power steering system (EPS)” on page 5-69.
