Driving Tips
Break-In Period
No special break-in is necessary, but a
few precautions in the ¿ rst 1,000 km
(600 miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of the vehicle.
y Do not race the engine.
y Do not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
y Do not drive constantly at full-throttle or
high engine rpm for extended periods of
time.
y Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
y Avoid full-throttle starts.
Saving Fuel and
Protection of the
Environment
How you operate your Mazda determines
how far it will travel on a tank of fuel. Use
these suggestions to help save fuel and
reduce CO2.
y Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine
runs smoothly, begin driving.
y Avoid fast starts.
y Drive at lower speeds.
y Anticipate when to apply the brakes
(avoid sudden braking).
y Follow the maintenance schedule
(page 6-4 ) and have an Authorized
Mazda Dealer perform inspections and
servicing.
y Use the air conditioner only when
necessary.
y Slow down on rough roads.
y Keep the tires properly in À ated.
y Do not carry unnecessary weight.
y Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal
while driving.
y Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
y Keep windows closed at high speeds.
y Slow down when driving in crosswinds
and headwinds.
WARNING
Never stop the engine when going down
a hill:
Stopping the engine when going
down a hill is dangerous. This causes
the loss of power steering and power
brake control, and may cause damage
to the drivetrain. Any loss of steering
or braking control could cause an
accident.

Owner Maintenance
y Underin À ation can cause reduced fuel
economy, uneven and accelerated tire
wear, and poor sealing of the tire bead,
which will deform the wheel and cause
separation of tire from rim.
y Overin À ation can produce a harsh ride,
uneven and accelerated tire wear, and a
greater possibility of damage from road
hazards.
Keep your tire pressure at the correct
levels. If one frequently needs in À ating,
have it inspected.
Tire Rotation
WARNING
Rotate tires periodically:
Irregular tire wear is dangerous. To
equalize tread wear for maintaining
good performance in handling and
braking, rotate the tires every 12,000
km (7,500 miles). However Mazda
recommends to rotate every 8,000 km
(5,000 miles) to help increase tire life
and distribute wear more evenly.
Refer to Scheduled Maintenance on
page 6-4 .
During rotation, inspect them for correct
balance.
Do not include (TEMPORARY USE ONLY)
spare tire in rotation.Forward
Also, inspect them for uneven wear and
damage. Abnormal wear is usually caused
by one or a combination of the following:
y Incorrect tire pressure
y Improper wheel alignment
y Out-of-balance wheel
y Severe braking
After rotation, in À ate all tire pressures to
speci ¿ cation (page 9-8 ) and inspect the
lug nuts for tightness.
(With tire pressure monitoring system)
After adjusting the tire pressure,
initialization of the tire pressure
monitoring system is necessary to make
the system operate normally.
Refer to Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Initialization on page 4-108 .
CAUTION
Rotate unidirectional tires and radial
tires that have an asymmetrical tread
pattern or studs only from front to rear,
not from side to side. Tire performance
will be reduced if rotated from side to
side.
(With limited-slip diff erential)
Do not use the following:
¾ Tires not of the designated size
¾ Tires of diff erent sizes or types at
the same time
¾ Tires not suffi ciently infl ated
If these instructions are not followed,
the rotation of the left and right wheels
will be diff erent and will thus apply
a constant load on the limited-slip
diff erential.
This will cause a malfunction.

Tire Maintenance
Improper or inadequate vehicle maintenance can cause tires to wear abnormally. Here are
some important maintenance points:
Tire In À ation Pressure
Inspect all tire pressure monthly (including the spare) when the tires are cold. Maintain
recommended pressures for the best ride, top handling, and minimum tire wear. Use the
pressures speci ¿ ed on the vehicle tire information placard or tire label for optimum service.
Tire Rotation
To equalize tread wear, rotate the tires every 12,000 km (7,500 miles) at the latest or sooner
if irregular wear develops. Mazda recommends to rotate every 8,000 km (5,000 miles) to
