Setting
the
brightness The brightness is automatically adjusted to theambient brightness.
The basic setting can be adjusted. Via iDrive:

When the low beams are activated, the brightjness of the Head-up Display can be additionj
ally influenced using the instrument lighting.

height

the
display
The visibility of the displays in the Head-up
Display is influenced by the following factors:

play.'ySunglasses with certain polarization filters.'yWet roads.'yUnfavorable light conditions.If the image is distorted, have the basic setj tings checked by a dealerss service center or
another qualified service center or repair shop.
Special
windshield
The windshield is part of the system.
The shape of the windshield makes it possibleto display a precise image.
A film in the windshield prevents double imj ages from being generated.
For this reason, it is strongly suggested to have the special windshield replaced by a dealj

If the driver's door is opened when the drive- ready state is switched off, the exterior lightingis automatically switched off.
Parking
lights
Position of switch:

The vehicle is illuminated on all sides.
Do not use the parking lights for extended pej
riods; otherwise, they might drain the battery
and it would then be impossible to switch on
drive-ready state.
Low
beams Position of switch:

The low beams illuminate when drive-ready
state is switched on.

Concept
The low beams are switched on and off autoj
matically depending on the ambient brightj
ness, for instance in tunnels, in twilight or if there is precipitation.
General
information
A blue sky with the sun low on the horizon can
cause the lights to be switched on.
Activating Position of switch:

The indicator light in the instrument cluster is
illuminated when the low beams are switched
on.
System
limits
The automatic headlight control cannot serve
as a substitute for your personal judgment of
lighting conditions.
For example, the sensors are unable to detect
fog or hazy weather. To avoid safety risks unj
der these conditions, you should always switch
on the lights manually.

Daytime
running

General
information
In some countries, daytime running lights are
mandatory, so it may not be possible to switch
the daytime running lights off.

Adaptive
Light
Control Concept
Adaptive Light Control is a variable headlight
control system that enables dynamic illuminaj
tion of the road surface.
General
information
Depending on the steering angle and other paj rameters, the light from the headlight follows
the course of the road.
To avoid blinding oncoming traffic, the Adapj
tive Light Control does not swivel to the drivj
er's side when the vehicle is at a standstill.
Depending on the equipment version, Adapj
tive Light Control consists of one or several systems:
'yCornering light, refer to page 133.Activating
Position of switch:

The Adaptive Light Control is active, when the
drive-ready state is switched on.
Cornering
light
In tight curves, for instance on mountainous
roads or when turning, an additional, cornering
light is switched on that lights up the inside of
the curve when the vehicle is moving below a certain speed.
The cornering light is automatically switched on depending on the steering angle or the use
of turn signals.
When driving in reverse, the cornering lights
may be automatically switched on regardless of the steering angle.
Self-leveling
headlights The self-leveling headlights compensate for
acceleration and braking operations in order
not to blind the oncoming traffic and to achieve
optimum illumination of the roadway.
High-beam
Assistant Concept
The high-beam Assistant detects other traffic
participants early on and automatically
switches the high beams on or off depending
on the traffic situation.
General
information
The high-beam Assistant ensures that the high beams are switched on, whenever the traffic
situation allows. In the low speed range, the high beams are not switched on by the system.
The system responds to light from oncoming
traffic and traffic driving ahead of you, and to
adequate illumination, for instance in towns
and cities.

The high beams can be switched on and off atany time as usual.
Activating/deactivating
Position of switch:
Press and hold button on signal lever.
The indicator light in the instrumentcluster is illuminated when the low
beams are switched on.
The headlights are automatically switched bej tween low beams and high beams.
The blue indicator light in the instruj
ment cluster lights up when the system
switches on the high beams.
The high-beam Assistant is deactivated when
manually switching the high beams on and off,
refer to page 104.
To reactivate the high-beam Assistant, press
the button on the turn signal lever.
System
limits
The high-beam Assistant cannot serve as a
substitute for the driver's personal judgment of
when to use the high beams. In situation that require this, therefore switch off manually.
The system is not fully functional in the followj ing situations, and driver intervention may be
necessary:
'yIn very unfavorable weather conditions,
such as fog or heavy precipitation.'yWhen detecting poorly-lit road users such
as pedestrians, cyclists, horseback ridersand wagons; when driving close to train or ship traffic; or at animal crossings.'yIn tight curves, on hilltops or in depresj
sions, in cross traffic or half-obscured onj coming traffic on highways.'yIn poorly-lit towns and cities or in the presj
ence of highly reflective signs.'yWhen the windshield in front of the interior
mirror is fogged over, dirty or covered with stickers, etc.

requirement
The low beams must be switched on before switching on the front fog lights.
Switching

The green indicator light lights up.
If the automatic headlight control, refer to page 132, is activated, the low beams will
come on automatically when you switch on the front fog lights.
When the high beams or headlight flasher are activated, the front fog lights are not switched on.

controlled.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the
reading lights are located next to the interior
lights in the front and rear.
Ambient
light
General
information
Depending on the equipment version, lighting
can be adjusted for some lights in the vehicle's interior.
If the ambient light was deactivated via iDrive, it will not be switched on when the vehicle is
unlocked.
Switching
on/offThe ambient light is switched on when the vejhicle is unlocked, and switched off when thevehicle is locked.
