This chapter describes all standard, country- specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Start/Stop
buttonConcept Pressing the Start/Stop button
switches drive-ready state on or off, refer to page 19.
Steptronic transmission: the drive-ready state is switched on
when you depress the brake pedal while pressj ing the Start/Stop button.
Pressing the Start/Stop button again switches
drive-ready state back off and standby state, refer to page 19, is switched back on.

If the exhaust pipe is blocked or ventilaj
tion is insufficient, harmful exhaust gases can
enter into the vehicle. The exhaust gases conj tain carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorjless but highly toxic gas. In enclosed areas, exj
haust gases can also accumulate outside of
the vehicle. There is danger to life. Keep the
exhaust pipe free and ensure sufficient ventilaj
tion.'

driving
into
a
vehicle
wash So that the vehicle can roll into a vehicle wash,
observe instructions for going into an autoj matic vehicle wash, refer to page 309.
Auto
Start/Stop
function
Concept
The Auto Start/Stop function helps save fuel. The system switches off the engine during a
stop, for instance in traffic congestion or at
traffic lights. Drive-ready state remains
switched on. The engine starts automatically
for driving off.
General
information
After every engine start via the Start/Stop butj ton, the Auto Start/Stop function is activated or
deactivated, according to the last setting, refer to page 100. If the Auto Start/Stop function is
active, it is available as soon as a speed of apj
prox. 3 mph/5 km/h is exceeded.
Depending on the selected driving mode, refer
to page 112, the system is automatically actij
vated or deactivated.

tion D.'yThe brake pedal remains pressed while the vehicle is stationary or the vehicle is held
by Automatic Hold.'yThe driver's safety belt is buckled or the driver's door is closed.

If the engine was not switched off automatij
cally when the vehicle stopped, the engine can be switched off manually:
'yPress the brake pedal forcefully again from
the current pedal position.'yEngage selector lever position P.
If all functional preconditions are fulfilled, the
engine switches off.
Air
conditioner
when
the
engine
isswitched
off
The air flow from the air conditioner is reducedwhen the engine is switched off.
Displays
in
the
instrument
cluster
General
information The display in the tachometer
indicates that the Auto Start/ Stop function is ready for an Auj
tomatic engine start.

The display indicates that theconditions for an automatic enj

Total
time
with
switched-off
engine If the vehicle is equipped for this
feature, the total time that the
engine has been switched off using the Auto Start/Stop funcj
tion is displayed during an autoj
matic engine stop in the ECO PRO driving mode.
The total time is automatically reset every time the vehicle is refueled.
System
limits
The engine is not switched off automatically in
the following situations:'yIn case of a steep downhill grade.'yBrake not engaged strongly enough.'yThe external temperature is high and autoj
matic climate control is running.'yThe vehicle's interior has not yet been
heated or cooled to the required level.'yIf window condensation is imminent.'yEngine or other parts not at operating temj
perature.'yEngine cooling is required.'yThe wheels are at a sharp angle or the
steering wheel is being turned.'yVehicle battery is heavily discharged.'yAt higher elevations.'yThe engine compartment lid is unlocked.'yThe parking assistant is activated.'yStop-and-go traffic.'ySteptronic transmission: selector lever poj sition in N or R.'yAfter driving in reverse.'yUse of fuel with high ethanol content.Starting

Functional
requirements

The engine starts automatically under the folj lowing preconditions:'yBy releasing the brake pedal.'yWhen Automatic Hold is activated: pressthe accelerator pedal.
Driving
away
After the engine starts, accelerate as usual.
Safety
mode
After the engine switches off automatically, it will not start again automatically if any one of
the following conditions are met:
'yThe driver's safety belt is unbuckled and
the driver's door is open.'yThe hood was unlocked.
Some indicator lights light up for a varied length of time.
The engine can only be started via the Start/
Stop button.
System
limits
Even if driving off was not intended, the deactij
vated engine starts up automatically in the folj lowing situations:
'yExcessive warming of the vehicle's interior
when the cooling function is switched on.'yExcessive cooling of the vehicle's interior

information
During an automatic engine stop, the vehicle
can be switched off permanently, for instance
when leaving it.

Automatic
deactivation
General
information
In certain situations, the Auto Start/Stop funcj
tion is deactivated automatically for safety reaj sons, e.g., if no driver is detected.
Malfunction The Auto Start/Stop function no longer
switches off the engine automatically. A Check Control message is displayed. It is possible to
continue driving. Have the system checked by a dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.
Parking
brake Concept
The parking brake is used to prevent the vehij
cle from rolling when it is parked.

An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an acj
cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, observe the following:'ySet the parking brake.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, e.g., with a wheel chock.'

Automatic
Hold
Concept
This system assists the driver by automatically
setting and releasing the brake, such as when
moving in stop-and-go traffic.
The vehicle is automatically held in place when
it is stationary.
On inclines, the system prevents the vehicle
from rolling backward when driving off.
General
information Under the following conditions, the parking
brake is automatically engaged:'yDrive-ready state is switched off.'yThe driver's door is opened while the vehij cle is stationary.'yThe moving vehicle is brought to a standj
still using the parking brake.

The indicator light changes from greento red.
Safety
information WARNING

Function readiness is established and the drivj er's door is closed.
After stepping on the brake pedal, e.g., when stopping at a traffic light, the vehicle is autojmatically secured against rolling.
The indicator lamp lights up green.
Driving
away Step on the accelerator pedal to drive off.
The brake is released automatically. The indicator light goes out.
Activating
the
parking
brake
automatically
The parking brake is automatically set if drive-
ready state is switched off while the vehicle is being held by Automatic Hold or if the vehicleis exited.
The indicator light changes from green
to red.
The parking brake is not set automatically, if
the drive-ready state is switched off, while the vehicle is coasting to a halt. Automatic Hold is
deactivated.

The LED goes out.
The indicator lamp goes out.
Automatic Hold is switched off.If the vehicle is being held by Automatic Hold, press additionally on the brake pedal, whenswitching off.
Malfunction
In the event of a failure or malfunction of the parking brake:
Secure the vehicle against rolling away, e.g.,
with a wheel chock, after existing the vehicle.
After
a
power
failure
To reestablish parking brake functionality after
a power failure:1.Turn on standby state.2. Pull the switch while stepping on the
brake pedal or selector lever position P is set and then push.
This process may take a few seconds. Any
sounds associated with this are normal.
The indicator light is no longer illumij
nated as soon as the parking brake is ready for operation again.

mirror When driving and during operation of the turnsignals or hazard warning system, do not foldin the exterior mirrors, so that the signal lightson the exterior mirror are easy to see.

Press the lever past the resistance point.Triple

Lightly tap the lever up or down.
The triple turn signal duration can be adjusted. Using iDrive:

rently used.
Signaling
briefly Press the lever to the resistance point and hold
it there for as long as you want the turn signal to flash.

flasher Push the lever forward or pull it backward.

Washer/wiper
system
General
information
Do not use the wipers if the windshield is dry, as this may damage the wiper blades or causethem to become worn more quickly.
Safety
information WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded
away state, body parts can be jammed or damj age may occur to parts of the vehicle. There isa risk of injury or risk of property damage.Make sure that the vehicle is switched offwhen the wipers are in the folded away stateand the wipers are folded in when switchingon.'
