Adjusting the steering wheel position
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable up
and down and forward and back.

that there is at least a 10 in (25 cm) d is­

will help.
- If your face is leve l with the steering wheel,
the a irbag does not provide as much protec­
t io n during a collision. Always make s ure
tha t the steering wheel is leve l with yo ur
chest.

ed on~. the MMI will show you the possible
commands for voice input in the respective
menu. You can sw itch the funct ion off at any
time .
Short dialog: when this function is switched on
~. a shorter form of the prompts is used. You

Speech dialog system volume: you can adjust
the volume of the prompts by turning the control
knob.

Safe driving
A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position or
too close to the airbag can be seriously in­
jured by an airbag as it unfolds . To help re­
duce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the steering wheel so that there are at least 10 in (25 cm) between your breastbone and
the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least 4 in
(10 cm) between the knees and the lower
part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the out­
side of the steering wheel rim with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to help reduce the risk of personal in­
jury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Holding
the steering wheel the wrong way can cause
serious injuries to the hands, arms and head if the driver's airbag inflates
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supplemen ­
tal driver's airbag to protect you in a colli­
sion.
- Always sit in an upright position and never
lean against or place any part of your body
too close to the area where the airbags are
located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front seats
properly and make sure that all passengers
are properly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle is
moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly
and you could lose control of the vehicle.
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests are
tilted back, the greater the risk of injury due
to incorrect positioning of the safety belt
and improper seating position.
- Children must always ride in child seats ¢
page 221. Special precautions apply

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper fron t passenger sea ting posi tion is
impor tan t for safe , relaxed driving.
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of in­
jury in the event of an accident, we recommend
that you adjust the seat for the front passenger
to the following position:
.,. Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is in
an upright position and your back comes in full
contact with it whenever the vehicle is moving.
.,. Keep both feet flat on the floor in front of the
front passenger seat.
.,. Fasten and wear safety belts correctly

Front seat passengers who are unbelted, out
of position or too close to the airbag can be
seriously injured or killed by the airbag as it
unfolds. To help reduce the risk of serious
personal injury:
- Passengers must always sit in an upright po­
sition and never lean against or place any
part of their body too close to the area
where the airbags are located.
- Passengers who are unbelted, out of posi­ tion or too close to the airbag can be seri­
ously injured by an airbag
as it unfolds with
great force in the blink of an eye.
- Always make sure that there are at least
10 in (25 cm) between the front passen­
ger's breastbone and the instrument panel.
- Always make sure that there are at least 4 in
(10 cm) between the front passenger's
knees and the lower part of the instrument
panel.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat of
their own and properly fasten and wear the safety belt belonging to that seat .

-Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instructions provided w ith the child seat or
carrier.
- Always make sure that there is nothing on
the front passenger seat that will cause the
capacitive passenger detection system in
the seat to signal to the Airbag System that
the seat is occupied by a person when it is
not, or to signa l that it is occ upied by some­
one who is heavier than the pe rson actua lly
s itting on the seat. The p resence of addi ­
tional objects could cause the passenger
fro nt airbag to be turned on when it shou ld
be off, or could cause the airbag to work in a
way that is different from the way it would
have worked without the object on the seat .
Front airbags
Description of front airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained front seat occu­
pants.

Airb ag sys tem
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standa rd
(FMVSS) 208, as well as Canada Motor Vehicle
Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 as applicable at
the time your ve hicle was manufactured. The
safety belts for the front seats have "pretension­
ers" that help to take slack out of the belt sys ­
tem . The pretens ioners are also activated by the
electronic control unit for the airbag system.
The front safety belts also have load limiters to
help reduce the fo rces applied to the body in a
crash.
The airbag for the driver is in the steering wheel
hub ¢
fig. 160 and the airbag for the front pas­
senger is in the instrument panel¢
fig . 161. The
general locat io n of the a irbags is marked "AIR­
BAG" .
There is a lot you need to know about the airbags
in you r vehicle. We urge you to read the deta iled
information about airbags, safety be lts and c hild
safety in this and the other chapte rs that make
u p the ow ner's literature. Please be sure to heed
the WARNINGS - they are ex tremely important
for yo ur safety and the safety of your passengers,
especially infants and small children.
A WARNING
-
Never rely on airbags alone fo r protect ion .
- Even when they deploy, airbags provide only
supp lemental protection .
- Ai rbag work most effectively when used
with proper ly worn safety be lts.
- T herefo re, always we ar you r safe ty be lts and
make sure that everybody in your vehicle is
proper ly restrained.
- Always hold the stee ring w heel with both
hands on the outside o f the steering wheel
rim at the 9 :00 o'clock and 3:00 o'clock po­
sitions to help reduce the risk of personal in­
jury if the driver's a irbag inflates.

Cooling system
Coolant
The engine coo ling system is filled with a mixture
of pur ified wate r and coolan t addit ive at the fa c­
t ory . T his coo la nt must not be not changed .
The coolant leve l is monito red throug h the . in­
d icator light

mend occasionally chec king the coo la nt level
manually.
If you must add coolant, use a m ixt ure of wa ter
a nd coo lant add it ive. Mixing the coolant additive
with d istilled water is recommended.
Coolant additive
The coolant additive is made of ant i-freezing and
corros ion protection agents. Only use the fo llow­
ing coolant add it ives. These addit ives may be
m ixed w it h each other.

mixed wit h water depends on the climate where
the vehicle will be operated . If the coolant addi ­

and have the cooling system inspected. If the
cooling system is not leaking, a loss can come
from the coolant boiling through overheating
and being pushed out of the cooling system.
A WARNING
The cooling system is pressurized and can be­
come very hot . To reduce the risk of burns
from hot coolant:
- Do not open the coolant expansion tank cap when the eng ine is hot. This increases the
risk of burns.
- Stop the engine and allow it to cool.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from es-
caping coolant and steam by covering the
coolant tank cap with a large, thick cloth .
- Turn the coolant tank cap counterclockwise
slowly and keep light pressure on the cap .
- To reduce the risk of burns, do not allow any
antifreeze or coolant to drip onto the ex­
haust system or hot engine components .
The ethylene g lycol in engine coolant can
catch fire under certain circumstances.
- The coolant add itive and the coolant can be
dangerous to your health. For this reason,
keep the coolant in the original container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poisoning.
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can sw itch
on even if the ignition is switched off, which
increases the risk of injury.
(D Note
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty . Air could enter the cooling system and
damage the engine. If this is the case, do not
cont inue driving. See an authorized Audi deal­
er or authorized Audi Service Facility for assis­
tance.

Have the brake fluid changed regularly by an au­
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility.

- If the brake fluid level is below the MIN
marking, it can impair the brak ing effect
and driving safety, which increase the risk of
an accident. Do not continue driving. See an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Serv ice Facility for assistance.
- If the brake fluid is old, bubbles may form
in the brake system during heavy braking.
This would impair braking performance and
driving safety, which increases the risk of an
accident .
- To ensure the brake system functions cor­
rectly, only use brake fluids that comply
with VW standard 501 14 or
FMVSS-116 DOT 4.

There are some restric tions on the use of the
compact spare tire. The compact spare tire has
been designed specifically for your type of vehi­
cle. Do not replace it with the spare tire from an­
other type of vehicle .

.,. Lift up the cover on the right side of the lug­
gage compartment and remove the vehicle
jack.
Snow chain s
For technical reasons, the use of snow cha ins on
the compact spare t ire is not permitted.
If you have to drive with snow chains and a front
tire fails, mount the spare wheel in place of a
rear tire. Install the snow cha ins on the rear tire
that you removed, and install that in place of the
front tire that failed .

-After installing a spare t ire, the tire p res­
s u re must be checked as soon as poss ible.

-If the spare tire is more than 6 years o ld,
use it only in an emergency and with ex ­
treme caution and carefu l driving.
- T he spare tire is intended on ly for tempora­
ry and short-term use. It shou ld be replaced
as soon as possible with the norma l wheel
and tire.
- After mounting the compact spare tire, the
tire pressure must be checked as soon as
poss ible. The tire pressure of the compact
spare tire must be 61 psi (420 kPA); other­
wise, you risk hav ing an accident.
- Do not drive faster than SO mph (80 km/h).

- Avoid full-throttle acceleration, heavy brak­
ing, and fast cornering. You r isk having an
accident.
- Never drive using more than one spare
wheel and tire. You r isk having an accident.
- Normal summer or winter tires must not be
mounted on the compact spare wheel rim.
- For technical reasons, the use of tire chains
on the spare tire is not permitted. If it is
necessary to drive w ith tire chains, the spare
wheel must be mounted on the front axle in
the event of a flat in a rear t ire. The newly
ava ilable front wheel must then be installed
in place of the rear wheel with the flat tire.
Installing the tire chain before mounting
the wheel and tire is recommended.
- Loose items in the passenger compartment
can cause se rious personal injury during
ha rd bra king or in an accident. Never store
the inflatable spare tire or jack and tools in
the passenger compartment .
- Normal summer or winter tires must not be
mounted on the compact spare wheel rim .
