The 12-volt sockets can be used for electrical ac­
cessories . The power usage must not exceed
120 watts .
There is an additional 12 Volt socket* in the cen ­
ter conso le storage compartment .
A WARNING
The sockets and the electrical accessories con­
nected to them only function when the igni­
tion is switched on . Incorrect usage can lead
to ser ious injuries o r bu rns . To reduce the risk
of injuries, never leave chi ldren unattended in
the vehicle with the vehicle key.
CD Note
- To reduce t he risk of damage to the vehicle
electrica l system, never attempt to charge
the veh icle battery by connecting accesso­
r ies t hat provide power, such as solar pane ls
or battery chargers, to the 12 Volt sockets
or the cigarette lighter.
- To reduce the risk of damage to the sockets,
on ly use plugs that fit correct ly.

Beverage containers in the cup holders should

Seats and storage
A WARNING
--Always keep the glove compartment lid
closed while dr iving to reduce the risk of in­
jury .
- Only use the storage compartments in the
door trim panels to store small objects that
will not stick out of the compartment and
impair the range of the side airbags.
- Make sure that the view to the rear is not
obstructed by hanging garments.
- Hang only lightweight clothing and be sure
that there are no heavy or sharp-edged ob­
jects in the pockets.
- Do not use coat hangers to hang the cloth­
ing because this could impair the effective­
ness of the side curtain airbags .

:E Air suspension*
The air suspension* is an electronically-control­
l ed air suspens ion and damping sys tem . The ad­
justment depends on the driving mode selected, steer ing movements, the driver's braking and ac­
celeration, and as the road surface, vehicle speed
and load. The vehicle ground clearance depends
on the mode selected and the speed .
The ground clearance increases s ignificantly
when the vehicle is in the
Allroad mode . At
speeds from approximately 50 mph (80 km/h) to
75 mph (120 km/h), the ground clearance re­
duces in stages. When the speed decreases, the
ground clearance increases again automat ically .
The ground clearance is the lowest in
Dynamic
mode.
Steering
The power steering adapts. Ind irect steer ing that
moves easily as in
Comfort mode is especially
suited to long drives on highways. The
Dynamic
mode provides sporty, direct steering.
All-wheel steering*
All-wheel steer ing increases driving comfort by
providing addit ional steering ability at the rear
axle . Steer ing in the opposite d irection at low
speeds decreases the turning rad ius. Steering in
the same d irect io n at high speeds improves the
response time while increasing driving stability at
the same time .
Sport differential*
As a component of the all wheel drive system
(quattro)
~ page 152, the sport diffe rential dis­
tributes the dr iv ing power to the rear axle de­
pending on the situation. The distribution of
power varies depending on the selected mode
from moderate
( Comfort ) to sporty (Dynamic ).
The goal is a high level of agility and ability to ac ­
celerate on curves . The vehicle is very responsive
to steering.
Adaptive cruise control (ACC)*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortab le to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control also

responds to the driving behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner.
Engine sound*
T he eng ine sound adapts to the current mode
and can be subtle to sporty .

-Make sure there is enough clearance above
and below the vehicle when parking. The
height of the ve hicle (gro und clearance) can
change once it is parked due to temperature
fluctuations, changes to the load conditions
and changes to the dr iving modes.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car car­
rier, train, ship or by other means, only tie
the vehicle down at the running surface of
the tires, which is the outer c ircumference.
Sec uring the vehicle at the axle compo­
nents, suspension struts o r towing eyes is
not permitted because the pressure in the
air suspens ion struts can change during
transport. The vehicle may not be secured
sufficiently if this happens.

The S selecto r lever position automatically en­
gages when the
Dynamic mode is selected .

Activating automatically
The parking aid is activated automatically at
speeds less than 6 mph (10 km/h) and when ap­
proaching an obstacle from approximately
3.1 feet (95 cm) away. There are audible signals
when approximately 1.6 feet (SO cm) away from
the obstacle.
If you press the P,,1A button to switch
the park ing aid off, it can only be reactivated au­
tomatically when one of the following conditions
is met :

-The vehicle speed exceeds 6 mph (10 km/h).
- The ignition is switched off and back on again.
- The parking brake is set and then released .
- The se lector lever must be in the P posit ion .
Segments in the visual display
The segments in front of and behind the vehicle
¢
fig. 137 help you to determine the d istance be­
tween your vehicle and an obstacle . The red
lines* mark the expected d irection of travel ac­
cording to the steering angle . A white segment
i ndicates an identified obstacle that is outside of
the vehicl e's path. Red segments show iden tified
obstacles that are in your veh icle's path. As you r
vehicle comes closer to the obstacle, the seg ­
ments move closer to the vehicle. The collision
area has been reached when the next to last seg ­
ment is displayed. Obstacles in the collision area,
i ncluding those outs ide of the vehicle's path, are
shown in red. Do not continue driving forward or

You should only switch offroad mode on or
switch ESC/ ASR off if your driving abilities
and the traff ic conditions perm it. There is a
r isk of slid ing.
- The stabilization function is limited when
offroad mode is switched on. The driving
wheels co uld spin and the vehicle could
swerve , especially on slick or slippery road
surfaces.
- T here is no vehicle stab ilizat ion when ESC/
ASR are switched off .
Hill descent assist
Hill descent assist makes it possible to drive
down a hill at a constant speed.

.. To switch hill descent assist on, press the 1-

button. The LED in the button turns on.

in the button turns off.
Hill descent assist brakes all four wheels auto­
matically in order to limit speed when driving ei­
ther forward or reverse on hills with a grade from approximately 6 to 60%. The wheels w ill not lock
up because the ABS remains activated.
When hill descent assist is on, the speed your ve­
hicle was traveling when it entered the hill is maintained. The assist begins shortly after you
start driv ing and continues up to approximately
19 mph (30 km/h). The driver can increase or de­
crease the vehicle speed w ith in these limits by
pressing the accelerato r or brake pedal.
H owever, there must be enough traction. Hill de­
scent assist
cannot function as expected, if for

example the hill is icy or if the surface is loose

Active regulat ion of a speed up to approximately
19 mph (30 km/h) is signaled in the instrument
cluster by an indicator light •. T he indicator
light turns on when in the ready mode.
II.
The system does not work at speeds above ap­
proximately 19 mph (30 km/h). The system is
then in ready-mode . This is indicated by the LED
in the button turning on.
Hill descent assist is automatically activated un­
der the following conditions:
- the LED in the button turns on
- the vehicle speed is lower than 19 mph (30 km/
h)
-the hill angle is at least approximately 6%
_&. WARNING
-
- Always adapt your speed to the weather,
road and traffic conditions. Do not let the
increased safety provided tempt you into
taking risks, because this increases the risk
of an accident.
- The hill descent assist system cannot over­
come the laws of phys ics. Your driving style
must always be adapted to the current road
and traffic cond itions .
- Hill descent assist may not be able to hold
your vehicle at a constant speed under all
conditions while driving on a hill (for exam­
ple if ground under the vehicle is loose).
Brakes
New brake pads
New brake pads do not achieve their full braking
effect during the first 250 mi (400 km). They
must be "broken in" first. However, you can com­
pensate for the slightly reduced braking force by
pressing f irmly on the brake pedal. Avo id heavy
braking during the break-in period.
Wear
Brake pad wear depends largely on the way the
vehicle is driven and on operating conditions .
This is especially true if you are driv ing frequent ly

A WARNING
Driving requires your complete and undivided
attention. As the driver, you have complete
responsibility for safety in traffic. Never oper­
ate mob ile dev ices wh ile driving, because this
increases the risk of an acc ident.

interface carefully so it is not damaged.
- Use a USB extens ion cable to connect dev i­
ces that have an integrated USB connector
(such as a USB stick) to prevent damage to

can occur inside vehicles can damage mobile
