General information
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only
provide maximum protection if the front seats are correctly adjusted .
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the dr iver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that:
- you can easily and quickly reach all the switches
and controls in the instrument panel
- your body is properly supported thus reducing
physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection ¢
page 148.
In the following sections, you will see exact ly
how you can best adjust your seats.
There are spec ial regulat ions and instr uctions for
installing a c hild safety seat on the front pas­
senger 's seat . Always fo llow the information re­
garding child safety provided in ¢
page 168,
Child safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and all
other passengers can result in serious person­
al injury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when the
vehicle is in motion - never put your feet on
top o f the instrument pane l, o ut of the win­
dow o r on top of the sea t cushion. This ap­
plies espe cially to the passenge rs.
If your
seat ing pos ition is inco rre ct, you increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden b rak­
ing or an accident . If the airbag inf lates and
the seating position is incor rect, this could
result in personal injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and front
passenge r to keep a d istance o f at least
10 inches (25 cm) between themselves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument pan­ el. If you're s itting any closer than this, the
airbag system cannot pro tect you properly.

In addition, the front seats and head re­
straints must be adjusted to your body
he ight so that they can give you maximum
protection .
- Always try to keep as much distance as pos­
sible between yourself and the steer ing
wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front passeng­
er's seat while the veh icle is moving. Yo ur
seat may move unexpectedly, causing sud­
den loss of vehicle contro l and personal in­
jury. If you ad just yo ur seat while the veh icle
is moving, you a re o ut of pos ition.
, Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving .
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's seat
i n the following manner:
.. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that
you can easi ly push the pedals to the floor
while keep ing your knees slightly bent¢

.. Adjust the seatback so that when yo u sit with
your back agains t the seatback, you can still
gras p the top of the steering wheel.
.. Adjust the head res traint so the uppe r edge is
as even as possib le w ith the top of you r head. If
that is not possible, try to adjust the head re ­
straint so that it is as close to this pos it ion as
possible ¢

A WARNING
Neve r place any objects in the dr iver's foo t­
well. An object could get into the pedal area and inte rfere with pedal function. In case of
sud den bra king or an ac cident, you w ould no t
be ab le to b rake o r accelerate.

Memory for driver's seat
Applies to: vehicles with seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers can
be stored using the memory buttons in the driv ­
e r's door.

In addition to the setting for the drive r's seat,
the exterior rear view mirror setting can be stor­ ed and recalled through seat memory if the vehi­
cle is properly equipped .
Storing and re calling s ettings
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2
c> fig . 64 the settings for two different drivers
can be stored and recalled
¢ page 62.
The cu rrent se ttings are also automatically as ­
signed to the remote contro l key being used
when the vehicle is locked . When the vehicle is
un locked , the settings assigned to the remote
control key being used are automatically recal­
led.
Tu rnin g se at memo ry on and off
If the IO FFI switch is depressed, the seat memory
is inoperative. When the Memory function is off,
the LED in the button lights up.
All t he s tored se tt ings are retai ned. We recom­
mend using the
I O FF I sw itch and deactivating the
seat memory if the vehicle is on ly going to be
used
temporarily by a driver whose settings are
not going to be stored.

Recalling settings

sw itched off, tap the corresponding memory
button briefly .

switched on, press the appropriate memory
button until the stored position is reached .
Successful storage is confirmed audib ly and by
the light in the
ISE TI button illuminating
c> page 62, fig. 64 .
When the vehicle is locked , the current settings
are stored and assigned to the remote control
key . But the settings stored on memory buttons
1 to 2 are not de leted. They can be recalled at
any time . When the vehicle is
unlocked , the set­
tings assigned to the remote control key a re re­
stored .
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save your in­ dividual seat position on one of the memory but­
tons . You can recall your settings again simply
and conveniently by p ressing the correspond ing
memory button. When the vehicle is locked,
these settings are automatically re-ass igned to
the remo te contro l key and stored.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat sett ing can only
be reca lled when the vehicle is stationary­
otherwise yo u ris k having an accident.
- In an emergency the reca ll proced ure can be
cancelled by pressing the
! OF F! switch or by
tapping of the memory buttons.

items from flying forward into the passen­
ger compartment.
- Never attach a child safety seat tether strap
to a tie-down.

Removing

-To prevent accidents, never install the lug­
gage compartment cover unsecured.

-Whenever driving, never place any hard or
heavy objects on the luggage compartment
or allow pets to sit on the luggage compart­
ment cover. They could become a hazard to
vehicle occupants in the event of sudden braking or in an accident.
(D Note
You could damaged a stored luggage com­
partment cover when you move the rear seat
or rear seat backrest.
@ Tips
- You can use the luggage compartment cov­
er to store light weight clothing or articles
but do not leave any heavy or sharp objects
in the pockets of the clothing.
- Remember that placing clothing or articles on the luggage compartment cover can
block the driver's vision in the rear view mir­
ror. This also applies especially when you
have to transport large objects.
- So that stale air can escape from the vehicle
be sure not to cover the ventilation slot be­
tween the rear lid and the luggage compart­
ment cover.
Double cargo floor
You can store dirty or wet objects under the car­
go floor.

Holding beverages at the rear

of the ar row .
• Place the beverage in the holde r and re lease
the a rm . T he arm swings back by itself and au ­
tomat ically secures the bev erage.
Clo sing the rear cupholders
• To close the rear cupholder, press on the center
section between the two arms and p ush the c u­
pholder in the s lot as far as it will go.
The ho ld ing arm must be adjusted such that it
lies closely against the cupholder.
A max imum o f two beve rages can be pla ced in
the center armrest .
A WARNING
Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident and
personal inju ry .
- Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liquids, such as hot coffee or hot tea, in
the vehicle while it is moving . In case of an
acc ident, sudden braking or other vehicle
movement, hot liquid could spill, causing
sca ld ing burns . Spilled hot liquid can also
cause a n accident and personal in ju ry.
- U se only soft c ups in the cupholder. Hard
cups and g lasses can cause injury in an acci­
dent.
- Never use the cupholder or adapter as an ashtray -risk of fire .
CD Note
Only dr ink con tainers with lids should be car­
r ied in the cupholder. Liquid co uld sp ill out
and damage your vehicle's elec tronic equip­
ment or stain the upho lstery, etc .

When cooling, the temperature of the bev erage
holder base will go down to approximately 41
°F
(5 °C) . When warm ing , the temperatu re will be
a ppro ximately 136
°F (58 °(). At 104 °F (40 °()
the warming display will come on@. This is re ­
minder not to touch the base because it is hot .
The display goes out if the temperature falls be­ l ow this val ue.
A WARNING
- Never touch the beve rage holder base when
the warming d isplay is on. You can b urn
yourse lf!
- Do not use breakab le beve rage containers
(for examp le made out of g lass or porce­
la in). Yo u could be injured by them in case
of an accident.
CD Note
M ake sure your beverage ho lder has a lid. If
not, your beverage could spill out and cause
damage to the veh icle electronic or stain the
seat covers .

Cupholders in the door pockets
There is a cupholder in all four doors.

power so urce for the compressor from the inflat­
ab le spare tire/tire repai r kit* when absol ute ly
necessary.

T he cigarette lighter on ly works when the ig­
nition is sw itched on. Incorrect usage can lead
to ser ious injuries or burns . For this reason,
children should never be left unattended in
the vehicle beca use this increases the risk of
injury.
12 -volt sockets
Electrical accessories can be connected to every
12-volt socket.

when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when driving around a corner.
- When you are driving make sure that any­
thing you may have placed in the center con­
sole or other storage locations cannot fall out into the footwells. In case of sudden
braking you would not be able to brake or
accelerate.
- Any pieces of clothing that you have hung
up must not interfere with the driver's view.
The coat hooks are designed only for light­
we ight cloth ing. Never hang any clothing
with hard, pointed or heavy objects in the
pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident -especially if the
airbag is deployed -these objects could in­
jure any passengers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove comportment is illuminated and can
be locked.

.,. Push the glove compartment lid upward until
the lock engages.
There are holders for a pen and a pad of paper in
the glove compartment lid.
On the right side in the glove compartment is a holder with the key body into which the emergen­
cy key must be clipped to be able to start the ve­
hicle.

-To reduce the risk of personal injury in an acci-
dent or sudden stop, always keep the glove
compartment closed while driving.
Cooling box in glove compartment
The cooling box works only when the air-condi­
tioning is in cooling mode.

A WARNING
Always keep the lid closed while driving to re­
duce the risk of injury during a sudden brak­
ing maneuver or in the event of an accident.

A WARNING
- Hang clothes in such a way that they do not
impa ir the driver's vision .
- The coat hooks must only be used for light­
weight cloth ing . Do not leave any heavy or
sharp edged objects in the pockets which may interfere w it h the side cu rtain airbag
deployment and can cause personal injury in
a crash .
- Do not use coat hangers for hanging cloth­
ing on the coat hooks as this can interfere
with prope r deployment of the side curtain
airbags in an accident.
- Do not hang heavy objects on the coat
hooks, as they could cause personal injury in
a sudden stop.
