There is a malfunction in the parking brake. Drive

Service Facility immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.

• Turn off engine and check coolant level.
The coolant level is too low.
Do not continue driving and switch the engine
off. Check the coolant level¢
page 166.
-If the coolan t level is too low, add coolant
¢page 166. Only continue driving once the in ­
dicator light turns off.
• Coolant temperature! Let engine run with
vehicle stationary.
Let the engine run at idle for a few minutes to
cool off, until the indicator light turns off.
- If the indicator light does not turn off, do not
continue driving the vehicle. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
for assistance.
.&_ WARNING
- Never open the hood if you can see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine compartment . This increases the risk of
burns. Wait until you no longer see or hear
steam or coolant escaping .
- The engine compartment in any vehicle can
be a dangerous area. Stop the engine and
allow it to cool before working in the engine
compartment. Always follow the informa-

- If the engine oil level is correct and the indica­
tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. See an authorized Audi

sistance.
(D Tips
The oil pressure warning is not an oil level in­
dicator. Always check the oil level regularly .
0 Alternator/vehicle battery
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being charg­
ed.
There is a malfunction in the alternator or the ve­
hicle electrical system .
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediately. Because the ve­
hicle battery is discharging, turn off all unneces­
sary electrical equipment such as the radio. See
your authori zed Audi dealer or authori zed Audi
Service Facility if the battery charge level is too
low .
r•j low battery charge: Battery will be charged
while driving.
The starting ability may be impaired.
If this message turns off after a little while, the
vehicle battery charged enough while driving. ..,_

signed a code. In case of a ma lfunction, the com­
ponent w ill be identif ied and the fau lt stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MI L light may a lso ill uminate if there is a
leak in the on-board f uel vapor recovery system.
If the light ill uminates after a refueling, stop the
veh icle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed (on ly vehicles with gasoline engine)
¢ page 157 .
In order to make an accurate d iagnosis, the stor­
ed data can on ly be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan too l for 0BD) .
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip ­
ment, p ush the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release ¢
fig. 5.
Your authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the nec­
essary repair.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for per­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli­
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
Your veh icle may be facto ry equipped with ti res
that are r ated for a maxim um speed of 130 mph
(210 km/h) . This is less than the maxim um speed
of yo ur vehicle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
fa ilur e and loss of control if the veh icle is operat­
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle a lso has an
electronic speed limiter. The electronic speed lim iter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the t ire speed rating . For more information
¢ page 171 .
If the engine contro l unit receives faulty vehicle
ro ad speed s ignals, the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL)
¢4 will illum inate . If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for
assistance .

More important things to know about front
airbags

Safety belts are important to help keep front
seat occupants in the proper seated position so
that airbags can unfold properly and provide sup­
p lemental protection in a frontal collision.
The front airbags are designed to provide addi­
tional protection for the chest and face of the
driver and the front seat passenger when:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- the seats have been positioned so that the oc-
cupant is properly seated as far as possible
from the airbag,
- and the head restra ints have bee n properly ad-
justed.
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye with
great force, things you have on your lap or have
placed on the seat could become dangerous pro­
jectiles , and be pushed into you if the airbag in­
flates.
When an airbag deploys, fine dust is released.
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the
veh icle. This dust is made up mostly of a powder
used to lubricate the airbags as they deploy . It
could irritate sk in.
It is important to remember that while the sup ­
plemental a irbag system is designed to reduce
the likel ihood of serious injur ies, other injuries,
for example swel ling, b ruising and m inor abra­
sions, can a lso happen when airbags inflate. Air­
bags do not protect the arms or the lower parts
of the body. Front airbags only supplement the
three po int safety belts in some frontal co llisions

in which the vehicle decele ration is high enough
to deploy the airbags.
Front airbags will not deploy:
-if the igni tion is sw itched off when a crash oc-
curs,
- in side co llisions,
- in rear-end co llisions,
- in rollovers,
- when the crash deceleration measured by the
airbag system is less than the minimum thresh­
old needed for airbag deployment as registered
by the electronic control un it .
Th e front pa ssenge r ai rb ag w ill also n ot
deploy:
- when the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- when the weight on the front passenger seat as
sensed by the Advanced Airbag System indi­
cates that the front a irbag on the passenger
side has to be turned off by the electron ic con­
trol unit (the
PASS ENGER AIR B AG OFF light
comes on and stays on).
A WARNING
Sitt ing in the wrong posit ion can increase the
risk of serious injury i n crashes .
- To reduce the r isk of injury w hen the ai rbags
inflate, the drive r and passengers must al­
ways sit in an upright posit ion, must not
lean against or place any part of their body
too close to the area where the airbags are
located.
- Occupants who are unbe lted, out of posit ion
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it unfolds with great
force in the blink of an eye

A child in a rearward-facing child safety seat installed on the front passenger seat will be
seriously inju red and can be k illed if the front
airbag inflates -even with an Advanced Airbag
Sys tem.

-Never open the hood when there is steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned. Wait unt il no steam or coolan t is
escaping.
- If the hood is not latched completely, it
could fly up w hile you are dr iving and ob­
s truc t your v isio n.
- For safety reasons, the hood must always be
closed secu rely while dr iv ing. Because of
this, always che ck t he hood afte r closing i t
t o make sure it is latched correct ly. The
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted.
- If you notice th at the hood is not latched
while you are d riving, stop immediately and
close it, because driving when the hoo d is
not latched increases the risk of an accident .
