Instruments and indicator lights

Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev ­
olutions per minute (RPM).
You shou ld shift to the next lowest gea r whe n
the speed is below 1,S00 R PM. T he begin ning of
the re d zone in the tachome ter ind icates the
maximum permissible engine speed fo r all gea rs
once the engine has been bro ken in and when it is
warmed up to operating temperature . Before
reaching the red zone, you should shift into the
next h igher gea r, c hoose the Dor S selecto r lever
position, or remove your foot from the accelera­
tor pedal.

The engine speed is automatica lly lim ited to the
speed d isplayed in the instrument cluster. T his
p rotects the e ng ine from overheating .
The engine speed lim itation deactivates once the
engine is no longer in the critical temperature
range and you have released the acce le rato r ped­
al once .
I f the engine speed lim itation was activated by
an eng ine contro l ma lf u nction,
the @B indicator
light also t urn s on. Make su re that the speed
does not go above t he speed d is p layed . Drive to

General information
Breaking in
A new vehicle must be broken in, and the break­
in distance should be 1,000 mi les ( 1,500 km). Do
not drive at speeds that w ill exceed
2/3 of the
maximum permitted engine speed
(RPM) for the
first 600 miles (1,000 km) , and avoid full accel­
eration during this period . You may gradually
start increasing the
RPM and the speed between
600 miles (1,000 km) and 1,000 miles (1,500 km).
During the first hours of use, the engine has a
higher internal friction than later on when all
moving parts have settled into place with each
other.
How the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000
miles (1,500 km) also affects the engine quality.
Drive at moderate engine speeds after the initial
break-in per iod, part icularly when running a cold
engine . This will reduce engine wear and improve
the mileage .
Do not drive at too
low of an engine speed (rpm).
Shift down if the engine stops running "smooth­ ly" . Extremely high eng ine speeds are automati ­
cally reduced .
New tires
If your vehicle is running on new tires, drive pa r­
ticularly careful for the first 350 miles (500 kilo­
meters) after fitting .
.&_ WARNING
-
New tires tend to be slippery and must also
be "broken-in". Be sure to remember this dur­
ing the first 350 miles (500 kilometers).
Brake gently . Avo id following closely behind
other vehicles or other situations that might
require sudden, hard brak ing.
Avoid damaging the vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps, etc., make certain that low-

lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged .
T h is is espec ially true for veh icles with low-slung
chass is (sports chassis)* and fully loaded
vehicles.
Warming up/cooling down
Appl ies to: Sand RS models
By warming up/cooling down the engine careful­
ly, you can he lp reduce unnecessary strain on
your vehicle when driving in a sporty style.
The engine speed is limited when the engine is
cold -the full engine output is not available.
When the engine is at operat ing temperature,
the engine speed limitation moves to a higher
RPM range. The tires also only reach their full
road holding capab ility once they have warmed
up .
Your vehicle also has an after-run cooling fea­
ture . However, cooling down is still important.
The engine and the brakes as well as the exhaust
system and the transmission become very hot
when driving in a spo rty style . Before you shut
the vehicle off, you should cool down the vehicle
by driving a few miles at low speeds with light ac­
celeration.
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to reduce the risk of vehicle
damage when driving through water, for example
on flooded roads:
- The water must not be any higher than the bot­
tom of the vehicle body .
- Do not drive faste r than walking speed.

After driving through water or mud, the effec-
tiveness of the brakes may be reduced due to
moisture on the brake rotors and brake pads.
A few careful brake applications should dry
off the brakes .

hours are also shown when the lap time exceeds
60 minutes. The maximum individual measure ­
ment is 99 hours. A maximum of SO laps can be
recorded.

plete respons ibility for safety in traffic. Only
use the functions in such a way that you al­
ways maintain complete control over your ve­

Braking
New brake pads
New b rake pads do not ac hieve the ir full b raking
effe ct during the firs t 2S 0 mi (400 km). They
m ust be "broken in" fi rst .
The b rea k-in period ca n be considerably longe r
for ve hicles w it h cer amic b rake rotors*. However,
you can compensa te fo r the slightly reduced

braking force by pressing firmly on the brake
pedal. Avo id heavy braking during the break-in
per iod.
Wear
Brake pad
wear depends large ly on the way the
vehicle is driven and on ope rating conditions .
This is espec ia ll y true if you a re driv ing frequent ly
i n the city and on curves or with a sporty driving
sty le .
Ope rating noi se
Noises may occur when braking depending on the
speed, braking force and outside conditions such
as temperature and humid ity.
Noises may become mo re apparent at lower
speeds due to the nature of the materials in the
ceram ic brake rotors* .
Effect of water and road salt
In certain situa tions, for e xamp le after d riving
thro ugh water, in heavy rain, a fter over nigh t con­
densation or after washing your car, the brak ing
effect can be reduced by moisture or ice on the bra ke rotors and brake pads. The brakes must be
"dried" f irst with a few ca refu l brake app lica­
tions.
At higher speeds and with the windshield wipers
turned on, the brake pads press against the brake rotors for a short amount of time. This action,
wh ich is not felt by the dr iver, happens at regu lar .,..

When extending and retracting the rear spoil­
er, make sure there are no persons or objects
w ith in the spoiler range to red uce the risk of
injury .
& WARNING
Driv ing at higher speeds w ithout the rear
spoiler dep loyed can impa ir hand ling ch arac­
t er istics, mak ing t he vehi cle h arder to con­
t rol.
- Always make sure tha t the spoiler is de­
ployed whe n driving a t speeds ove r 85 mph
(140 km/h) . If the rear spoiler warning/ind i­
cator light in the instrument cluster comes
on, the rear spo iler may not have deployed.
- Never drive at speeds higher than 85 mph (140 km/ h) if the spoile r is not deployed.
Have the spoiler inspected as soon as possi­
ble by an author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied
workshop.
-Always obey speed limits and other tra ffic
laws .
(D Note
-Never push on the vehicle on the rear spoi l­
er . This cou ld cause damage.
- To prevent damage to the rear spoiler do
not lean o r place anything on it.
- Only opera te the rear spoiler man ually when
the luggage compartment lid is close and
the rear spoiler movi ng pa rts a re not
blocked. Otherwise, damage could occur.
(D Tips
Clean the rear spoi ler compartment eve ry 2 to
3 mont hs. To function correctly, the rear
spoiler m ust be free of ice, snow and leaves.

' The starting ability is optimized
T he energy management system manages the
electrical energy distribution and optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the
engine.
When a vehicle with a conventional energy sys ­
tem is no t drive n for a long time, the ve hicle bat­
te ry is drained by equ ipment (fo r example, t he
i mmob il iz er). I n cer ta in circ umstan ces, the re
could m ay no t be e nough energy to s tart the en­
gine.
You r vehicle is equipped with an inte lligent e ner­
gy management system fo r dist ributing elec trici­
ty. Thi s sign ifica ntl y improves the start ing ability
and incre ases the vehicle battery life .
The ene rgy ma nagement system Is made up of
battery diagnosi s, idling current management ,
and dynamic energy management .
Battery diagnosis
T he battery diagnos is determines the vehicle bat ­
tery charge level. The sensors detect the ba tte ry,
the batt ery cur rent, and t he battery temperature .
The curren t cha rge level and the pe rformance of
t h e ve hicle battery are dete rm ined based on th is .
Idling current management
The idling current management decreases the
energy used while parked . With the engine
switched off , it m anages t he e ne rgy dis trib ution
to the d ifferen t electr ica l components . Data from
t h e b attery d iagnosis is ta ken into a ccou nt for
th is .
De pen ding on the vehicle batte ry c ha rge level,
e le ctri ca l eq uipme nt is switched off one i tem af ­
te r th e o ther to p revent t he vehi cle b attery from
dra ining and to ma intain the s tarting ab ility.
Dynamic energy management
While dr iv ing , dynam ic energy management dis­
t ributes the app ropr iate amo unt of energy to t he
ele ctrica l eq uipm ent. It contro ls t he batte ry
c harge level so tha t the amou nt o f energy is no t

- Do not use fuel for which the contents can­
not be identified.
- Fuel system damage and performance prob­
lems resulting from the use of fue ls differ­
ent from those specified are not the respon­
s ibility of Audi and are not covered under
the New Veh icle or the Emiss ion Control
System Warranties.
- If you experience a loss of fuel economy or
driveability and performance problems due
to the use of one of these fuel b lends, we
r ecommend that you switch to unblended
fuel.
Gasoline additives
A ma jo r concern among many auto manufactur­
ers is carbon deposit build- up ca used by the type
of gasoline you use.
A lthough gasoline grades d iffer from one manu­
facturer to another, they have cer tain things in
common . All gaso line grades contain substances
that can cause deposits to collect on vita l engine
parts, such as fue l injectors and intake valves. Al­
though most gasoline brands include additives to
keep engine and fuel systems clean, they are not
equally effective .
Audi recommends using TOP TIE R Detergent Gas­
oline. For more information on TOP TIER Deter ­
gent Gasoline, please go to the official website (www.toptiergas .com) .

After an extended period o f using inadequate
fuels, carbon deposit bui ld-ups can rob your en­
gine of peak performance.

Diesel fuel
Applies to: vehicles wi th diese l en gin e
Always use ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diese l) No. 2 .
The ULSD No. 2 meets the ASTM D97S.
D iesel fuel w ith concentrations of b iod iesel high­
er than 5 % such as B l 1, B20 or BlOO are st rict ly
prohibited .
Se rvice station fuel pumps are labe led wi th the
correc t fu el i nfo rmation for easy recogn ition by
the user . If the diesel fue l pump is not labe led
ask the station operator what fue l is being dis­
pensed before filling up your vehicle .
U LSD No . 2 may no t be ava ilable outside the USA
and Canada . Be s ure to check befo re t raveling to
other countries .
U LSD No . 2 can become th ic k e r i n very co ld tem­
peratures, and this can impa ir the e ng ine's s tart­
i ng and running . Depend ing on the season, gas
stations provide ULSD No . 2 that flows better in
cold temperatures so that you can continue oper­
at ing your vehicle as usual.
(D Note
- Your vehicle's diese l engine was designed
so ley for use with ULSD No . 2 . Therefore,
never use gasoline, heating oil, other fuels
or flow improvers. These contain substances
that will severely damage the fuel system and the engine. Such damage will not be
covered by your New Vehicle Limited War­
ranty.
- If you put any amo unt of incorrect fuel in
the fuel tank, do not start the engine under
any c ircumstances. Immed iate ly contact the
nearest author ized A udi dealer or author-
ized Aud i Serv ice Facility fo r ass istance .

0.5 quart/600 miles (0.5 liter/1,000 km),
depending on driving style and operating
conditions. In RS models, the oil consump­
tion may be up to 1 qt/600 mi (0.8 L/ 1,000 km). Consumption may be higher
during the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km). Be­
cause of this, the engine oil level must be
checked regular ly.
It would be best to check
each time you ref uel your veh icle and befo re
l ong d rives.
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that hove your oil changed by on
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta­
tion .
Before you check a nyth ing in the eng ine compart­
ment,
alway s re ad and heed all WARNING S 9 &.

The engine oil must be changed according to the
intervals specified in you r Warranty
& Mainte­
n ance booklet. This is very impo rtant because the
l ub ricating properties of oil diminish gradually
during normal vehicle use.
Unde r some ci rcumstances the e ngine o il should
be cha nged more frequently . Change oil mo re of­
ten if yo u drive mostly short distances, operate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and-go traffic conditions, or have your vehi­
cle where temperatures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
l ook dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. Th is is normal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposa l, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re­
q ui red, we strongly recommend that you have
your oil changed by an authorized
A ud i dealer or
a qualified service station.
If you choose to chang e your o il your self, please
note the following important information:
Ch eck ing and Filling
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of persona l injury if you
must change the eng ine oil in you r vehicle
yourself:
- Wear eye protect ion.
-
- To reduce the r isk of burns from hot engine
oil, let the engine cool down to the touch.
- When remov ing the oil drain plug w ith your
f ingers, stay as far away as possible. Always
keep your forearm parallel to the ground to
help prevent hot oil from running down your
arm.
- Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one la rge enough to hold at
least the tota l amount of oi l in you r engine .
- Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it we ll out of
the reach of children.
- Continuous contact with used engine o il is
harmf ul to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoroughly with soap
and wate r.
Q) Note
Never mix oil additives with your engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adverse ly affect you r Audi limited New Vehi­
cle Warranty.
@ For the sake of the environment
- Before chang ing your oi l, first make sure
you know where you can properly d ispose of
the used oil.
- Always dispose of used e ngine o il properly .
Do not dump it on ga rden soil, wooded
areas, into open streams o r down sewage
dra ins.
- Recycle used e ngine o il by ta king it to a used
eng ine oil collection fac ility in yo ur area, or
c ont act a se rvice station.
Cooling system
