Switching the ignition on/off
If yo u wou ld like to switch the ign ition on with­
ou t starting the eng ine, fo llow these steps:

When start ing the e ng ine, major elect rical loads
are switched off temporarily.
After a cold engine is started, there may be a b rief period of increased no ise beca use oil pres­
sure must first bui ld up in the hydraulic valve ad­
justers. This is no rmal a nd not a cause for con­
cern.
.&, WARNING
- Never allow t he eng ine to run in confine d
spa ces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never t urn off the engine until the vehi cle
has come to a comp lete stop.
- Always take the key wi th you w henever you
leave you r vehicle. Othe rw ise, the eng ine
c ould be sta rted o r ele ctrical eq uipment
s u ch as the power windows co uld be operat­
ed. This can lead to se rious injury.
- Never leave children or pe rsons requiring as ­
sistance unattended i n the vehicle. The
doo rs can be loc ked using the remote trans­
mitter, prevent ing people from escaping
from the vehicle on the ir own in the event of
an emergency . Depend ing o n the t ime of
year, peop le inside the vehicle can be ex­
posed to very hig h or very low tempe ra-
t u r es.

- After starting a co ld eng ine, the re may be a
br ief per iod of increased noise because the
oil pressure must first build up in the hy­
dra ulic valve adjusters . Th is is norma l and
not a cause for concern .
- If you leave the ve hicle w ith the ignition
switched on, the ig nition w ill switch off af­
ter a ce rtain per iod of t ime . Please note that
elect rical equipment such as exte rior lights
w ill swi tch off as we ll when that happens.

Steering lock
The steer ing locks when yo u turn the eng ine off

Emergency off
I f necessary, the eng ine can be switched off w ith
t h e se lec to r l ever in t he R or D/S posit ions. The
engine s tops if you press and hold the

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - part icu­
larly not children should remain in the vehi­
cle. Locked doors make it more diff icu lt for
emergency workers to get into the vehicle -
putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking brake
~ Pull the switch @9 page 76, fig. 91 to apply
the parking brake.
Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
~ When you start to drive as usual, the parking
brake is automatica lly released and your vehicle
begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in
city traffic on vehicles w ith an automatic trans­
miss ion, the park ing brake can be applied. The
vehicle does not have to be held with the foot­ brake . The park ing brake eliminates the tendency
to creep with a drive range engaged. As soo n as
you dr ive off as usual, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically and the veh icle starts to
move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the start ing assist pre ­
vents the vehicle from unintentionally rolling
back. The braking force of the parking brake is
not released until sufficient driving force has
been built up at the wheels.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Driving
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an in­
cline, do the following:
~ Keep the switch @9 page 76, fig. 91 pulled
and depress the accelerator. The parking brake
stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
rolling backwa rd .
~ You ca n release the sw itch @once you a re sure
that you are develop ing enough dr iv in g force at
t he wheels by depressing the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and
trailer) and the severity of the incline, you may
roll backwards as you start. You can prevent roll­
i ng backwards by holding the pa rking brake
swi tch @ pulled out and accelerating -just as
you wou ld when starting on a hill with a conven­
t iona l hand brake .
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional broke system
foils or locks.
~ I n an emergency, pull the switch@Q page 76,
fig. 91 and continue to pull it to slow your vehi ­
cle down with the parking brake.
~ As soon as you re lease the switch @or acceler-
ate, the braking process stops .
If you pull the switch @and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
braking f unction is init iated. The vehicle is braked
at all four whee ls by activating the hydraulic
brake system . The brake performance is s imilar
to making an emergency stop

In order not to activate the emergency braking by
mistake, an audible warning tone (buzzer)
sounds when the switch @is pulled . As soon as
the switch @ is released, or the accelerator pedal
i s depressed, emergency braking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an
emergency, when the normal foot bra ke has
failed or the brake pedal is obstructed. Using
the parking brake to perform emergency
braking w ill slow your vehicle down as if you

will no longer shift at all. The engine may sta ll.

You can continue driving

tion in t he tra nsmission. The transmiss io n is
switch ing to emergency mode . This mo de only
shifts into certain gears or will no longer sh ift at
all. The engine may stall. You cannot engage the
reverse gea r. D rive to your authorized A udi dealer
or qua lified repa ir facility immed iate ly to have
the ma lfunction co rrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle and
sh ift to park.
Do not cont inue driving . Selec t the P se lector lev ­

Selector lever emergency release
Applies to: vehicles with multitronic/S tron ic/tiptronic
If the vehicle 's power supply foils, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

Fa ults in the brake system
If yo u should notice a sudden increase i n brake
pedal travel, then one of the two brake circuits
may have failed

Low brake fluid level
Malf unct ions can occur in the bra ke system if the
b rake fl uid leve l is too low. The brake fluid level

Bra ke booste r
The brake booster increases the pressure that
you generate with the brake pedal.

Bra ke lining we ar status
Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the open ings in the wheel. If necessary,
the wheel may be removed for this inspection
¢ page 228, Replacing wheels.
A WARNING
- New bra ke pads don't have the best stop­
ping power and must be "bro ken- in" dur ing
the init ia l 250 m iles (400 kilometers). Yo u
can compensate for th is by press ing the
brake pedal more firmly. This a lso applies
later when new pads are installed.
- Yo u should perfo rm braking maneuvers for
the p urpose of clean ing the brake system
only if road conditions permit. Other road
users must not be put at risk -you may
cause an accident!
- Before descending a steep grade, reduce
speed and shift t ransm iss ion into a lower
gear or lowe r driving range. Do not ride the
brakes or hold the pedal down too long or
too often. This could ca use the brakes to get
hot and diminish brak ing efficie ncy.
- Do not "r ide t he b rakes" by resting your foot
on the pe dal when yo u do not inten d to
bra ke. This may cause the bra kes to over­
heat, premat ure wear and increased stop ­
ping distance.
- Under certa in climatic and operating condi­
tio ns such as passing thro ugh water, driving
in heavy rain or after washing the vehicle,

the effectiveness o f the brakes can be re­
duced. In winter, ice can accum ulate on the
brake pads, lin ings, d iscs and drums . Care­
fu lly apply brakes for a test . Brakes will dry
and ice coat ings will be cleaned off after a
few ca refu l brake applications .
- Driving for an extended period of t ime on
salt-covered roads without usi ng your
b rakes can also affect braking eff iciency.
Clea n off acc umul ated salt coat ing from
b rake discs an d pa ds w ith a few careful
b rake appli cat ions .
- I f you d amage the front spoile r, or if you in­
s t all a different spoiler, be s ure the a ir flow
to the front brakes is not obstruc ted. Other­
wise the brake system could overheat reduc­ ing the effectiveness of t he ent ire bra ke sys­
tem.
- Fai lure of one brake circuit w ill impa ir the
braking capability resulting in an increased
stopping distance . Avoid driving the vehicle
and have it towed to the nearest authorized
Aud i dealer or qualified workshop.
- Never let the vehicle roll to a stop with the
engine shut off.
- If the brake booster is not working, the
brake pedal must be pressed cons iderab ly
ha rder to make up fo r the lack of booste r
assis tance .
Electro-mechanical
power assist, dynamic
steering
The electro-mechanical power assist helps the
driver when steering.
Power steer ing adapts electronically based on
the vehicle speed.
Indicator lights and messages
• Steering defe ctive! Do not drive vehicle!
If this indicato r light turns on and stays on and
t hi s message appears, the powe r steering may
have failed.

- Check the depth of the water before driving
through it .
- Do not stop the veh icle, drive in reverse or
switch the engine
off when driving through
water.
- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your veh icle to drive
through safely.
- Avoid driving through salt water because it
can cause corrosion.
Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission control
system (catalytic converter) is functioning prop­ erly to ensure that your vehicle is running in an
environmentally sound manner .

Fuel supply .
~ Never run the tank down a ll the way to empty .
~ Never put too much motor oil in your engine

~ Never try to push- or tow-start you r vehicle.
The cata lytic converter is an efficient "clean-up"
dev ice bu ilt into the exha ust system of the vehi­
cle. The cata lytic conve rter burns many of the
pollutants in the exhaust gas before they are re ­
leased into the atmosphere.
The exclusive use of unleaded fue l is critica lly im­
portant for the l ife of the catalytic conve rter and
p roper functioning of the engine.
A WARNING ,..____ -
- The temperature of the exhaust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine.
- Never touch the exha ust tail pipes once they
have become hot. This could result in burns.
- Do not park or ope rate t he vehicle in areas
where the hot exha ust system may come in
contact with dry grass, br ush, fue l spill or
other mater ial which can cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust mani-

fold, exha ust pipes, cata lytic conve rter or
heat shields. D uring driving, the substance
used for undercoat ing could overheat and
cause a f ire.
Cl) Note
- Be aware that just one tank f illing wit h
leaded fu e l w ill already seriously degrade
the performance of the catalytic converter.
- Do not exceed the correct engine oil leve l
¢page 197.
-Do not drive until the fue l tank becomes
completely empty. The engine could mis­
fire. Unbu rned fue l cou ld also get into the
exhaust system and this could cause the
catalytic converter to overheat.
- Do not turn off the ign ition while the vehicle
is moving .
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle un­
der these conditions, as otherw ise fuel can
reac h the catalytic converter. T his could re­
sult in overheat ing of the converter, requir­
ing its replacement.
- T o ass ure eff icient operat ion of the Emis­
sion Contro l System:
- Have you r vehicle maintained properly and
i n accordance wit h the service recommen­
dations in your Warranty
& Ma intenance
booklet.
- Lack of proper ma intenance as well as im­
p roper use of the veh icle will impa ir the
function of the emission control system
and could lead to damage.
(® For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emiss ion Control System is op­
erating properly, t he exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some op­
erating states. Th is depends on the sulfur
content of the fuel being used. Us ing a d iffer­
ent brand of fuel may help, or fi lli ng the tank
wi th lead-free super g rade gasoline.
Shutting down vehicle

Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot
of fuel.
.,. Have your vehicle serviced at regular intervals.
By having your vehicle regu larly serviced by an
author ized Audi dealer he lps to ensure that it
runs properly and econom ically . The condition of
your veh icle not only affects its safety and ability
to hold its value, it also affects
fu el consump­
tion .

The amount of oil used is re lated to engine load
and speed.
It is normal for the oil consumpt ion of a new en­
g ine to reach its lowest val ue afte r a certa in mile­
age has been driven .
You must d rive you r vehicle about 3 ,000 miles
(5,000 k ilome ters) before you can p roperly as ­
sess o il cons umption .
This a lso applies to fuel consumption and engine
outpu t.

Fewer short trips
Fuel consumption will always be relatively high
on short trips .
.,. Try to avoid driving short distances with a cold
eng ine .
T he eng ine and catalytic converter have to reac h
their opt imal
operating temper atu re to reduce
fuel consumpt ion and noxious emiss ions effec­
tively .
Just after start ing, a cold engine in a mid-size car
on ly achieves a fuel economy of 6-8 miles per
gallon (30-40 l/100 km) . After about a half a
mile, fuel economy climbs to 12 mpg (20 l/100
km) . After about
2 .5 m iles (4 km), the engine is
at its proper operating temperatu re and fuel
economy has reached a no rma l level. So you can
see that you should avoid sho rt tr ips wheneve r
possible .
The

gard. Your car cons umes more fue l in the winter
than in the summer.

age to plast ic and rubber components in the
fuel system.

not a particular fuel blend meets the spec i­

- Do not use fue l for wh ich the contents can­
not be identif ied.

Ethanol fuel (Bio-ethanol)
Applies to: ve hicles with flex ible fuel engine
You can recognize vehicles wi th a flexible fuel
engine by looking at the label on the inside of the fuel filler flap.
Ve hicl es w ith flex ible f uel engines may be oper­
ated w ith b io -e thanol fuels such as EBS (85%
ethano l and 15% gasoline) or with un leaded gas­
oline (91 AKI/ROZ 95) . The ve hicle may a lso be

Fuel and R efueling
Your fuel consumpt ion w ill increase when using
bio-ethano l fue ls due to the lower amount of en­
ergy conta ined per un it vol ume in ethanol.
Warming up the flexible fuel engine in low
temperature s
Due to the chemica l composition of b io -ethanol,
a certa in amount of fue l ends up in the engine o il
when driving short distances in very low temper­
atures. This fuel evaporates again when the en­
gine is warmed up.
II Please warm up eng ine .
If the drive r message appears in the instr ume nt
cluster disp lay, drive with a warm engine to re ­
duce the oil leve l.
(D Note
- N ever fill wi th metha no l o r with a higher
percentage of b io -ethanol than 85% (E85).
A highe r percentage of bio-ethanol in the
fuel can cause damage to the engine or to the fuel system.
- If you use on ly E85, it is recommende d to
fill the fue l tank complete ly w ith unleaded
premium g rade gasoline every 5,000 mi les.
- If you expe rience starting, rough id le or hes ­
itat ion d riveab ility prob lems, f ill the fuel
tank complete ly w ith unleaded p remium
grade gaso line and drive it norma lly until
t he gaso line is used. See your author ized
Audi dea ler if the problem persists.
- Inform your author ized Audi dealer that you
are ope rating o r have operate d the vehicle
w ith EBS.
