A number of electrical components in the XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid usehigh-voltage current and can be extremelydangerous if handled incorrectly. These com-ponents and any orange wiring in the vehiclemay only be handled by trained and qualifiedVolvo service technicians.

Drive modes
Different drive modes can be selected while driv- ing, e.g., electric power only or a combination ofelectric and gasoline power. The vehicle calcu-lates the optimal combination of drivability, drivingexperience, environmental impact and fuel econ-omy for the selected drive mode. See also thearticle "Drive modes" for additional information.
Instrument panel
In certain driving situations, hybrid-unique infor- mation may be displayed in the instrument panel,such as: a hybrid battery gauge (current chargelevel), the current drive mode, a symbol that illu-minates when the gasoline engine is being used,a Hybrid Guide and the level of energy regenera-tion.
Preconditioning
In order to function optimally, the hybrid battery (and its related electrical systems) and the gaso-line engine (and its drive systems) should be atthe correct operating temperature. The hybridbattery's capacity is reduced considerably if it istoo cold or hot. Preconditioning prepares thevehicle's drive systems and passenger compart-ment before the vehicle is driven to help reducewear and energy consumption.
Charging the hybrid battery
CAUTION
Never connect the charging cable if there is a risk of thunderstorms/lightning.
The XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid uses a lithium-ion battery that can be charged in severalways:
• A charging cable can be connected from the vehicle to a 110-volt AC socket. Chargingtime depends on the strength of the current.
• When the brakes are applied lightly, the elec-tric motor is used for engine braking, duringwhich the vehicle's kinetic energy is conver-ted into electric current that is used to helprecharge the hybrid battery.
• The hybrid battery is also recharged to a cer-tain extent when the gasoline engine is inoperation.

Volvo's environmental activities are based on a holistic view, which means we consider the over-all environmental impact of a product throughoutits complete life cycle. In this context, design, pro-duction, product use, and recycling are all impor-tant considerations. In production, Volvo haspartly or completely phased out several chemicalsincluding CFCs, lead chromates, asbestos, andcadmium; and reduced the number of chemicalsused in our plants 50% since 1991. Volvo was the first in the world to introduce into production a three-way catalytic converter with aLambda sond, now called the heated oxygen sen-sor, in 1976. The current version of this highlyefficient system reduces emissions of harmfulsubstances (CO, HC, NOx) from the exhaust pipeby approximately 95 – 99% and the search toeliminate the remaining emissions continues.Volvo is the only automobile manufacturer tooffer CFC-free retrofit kits for the air conditioningsystem of all models as far back as the 1975model 240. Advanced electronic engine controlsand cleaner fuels are bringing us closer to ourgoal. In addition to continuous environmentalrefinement of conventional gasoline-poweredinternal combustion engines, Volvo is activelylooking at advanced technology alternative-fuelvehicles. When you drive a Volvo, you become our partner in the work to lessen the car's impact on theenvironment. To reduce your vehicle's environ-mental impact, you can:
• Maintain proper air pressure in your tires. Tests have shown decreased fuel economywith improperly inflated tires.
• Follow the recommended maintenanceschedule in your Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet.
• Drive at a constant speed whenever possible.
• See a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician as soon as possible for inspectionif the check engine (malfunction indicator)light illuminates, or stays on after the vehiclehas started.
• Properly dispose of any vehicle-related wastesuch as used motor oil, used batteries, brakepads, etc.
• When cleaning your vehicle, please use gen-uine Volvo car care products. All Volvo carcare products are formulated to be environ-mentally friendly.

• If possible, precondition the vehicle with the charging cable before driving.
• If preconditioning is not possible in coldweather, use the seat and steering wheelheating primarily. Avoid heating the entirepassenger compartment, which reduces thehybrid battery's charge level.
• Choose the
Pure drive mode to help mini-
mize electric power consumption.
• In hilly terrain, put the gear selector in mode B
to utilize the electric motor's braking func-
tion when the accelerator pedal is released. This helps charge the hybrid battery.
• Select the
Save drive mode for higher
speeds when driving farther than is possible using the electric motor only.

Trip computer The trip computer registers and calculates infor- mation such as distance driven, fuel consump-tion and average speed. This information is dis-played in the instrument panel.
To help promote fuel efficient driving, the trip computer provides readings for current and aver-age fuel consumption. The trip computer includes the following gauges:
• Trip odometers
• Odometer
• Current fuel consumption
• Distance to empty
• Tourist (alternative speedometer)
Trip odometerThere are two trip odometers: TM and TA. During a drive, the trip odometer registers:
• Mileage
• Driving time
• Average speed
• Average fuel consumption
The values displayed are those since the lasttime the trip odometer was reset.
OdometerThe odometer registers the vehicle's total mile-age and cannot be reset.
Current fuel consumptionThis gauge shows the current fuel consumption.This reading is updated once a second.
Distance to emptyThis function shows the approximate distancethat can be driven on the fuel remaining in thetank. The calculation is based on average fuel con- sumption during the last 20 miles (30 km) ofdriving and the amount of fuel remaining in thetank. When the gauge displays "----", there is very little useable fuel remaining in the tank; refuel as soonas possible. The accuracy of this figure may vary if your driv-ing style changes. An economical driving style willgenerally increase this distance.
Distance to discharged batteryThis gauge shows the approximate distance thatcan be driven on the charge remaining in thehybrid battery. When the gauge displays "----"there is no guaranteed driving charge remainingin the battery. This calculation is based on the average electrical current consumption in a normally loaded vehicleduring normal driving, and whether the A/C is onor off. An economical driving style will generally increase this distance.
Distance using the electric motor
To get the optimal driving distance using the electric motor, it is essential to conserve current.Functions that use a great deal of current (e.g.,audio system, electrical heating in the steeringwheel/door mirrors/rear window/seats, very coldair from the climate system, etc.) reduce the pos-sible driving distance.
NOTE
In addition to high electrical consumption in the passenger compartment, fast accelera-tion, sudden braking, heavy loads, low ambienttemperatures and driving up hills can reducethe possible driving distance.

Resetting a trip odometer
Reset trip odometer TM by pressing and holding the RESET button the left-side steering wheel
lever. Trip odometer TA resets automatically if the ignition is switched off for more than 4 hours.
Changing the unit of measureChange the units of measure for driven distanceand fuel consumption in the center display's Top view by selecting
SettingsSystemUnitsand marking the desired unit.
NOTE
Changing these units of measure will also change the ones used in the Volvo navigation system *.

Hybrid-related information in the instrument panel
Different types of information will be displayed in the instrument panel, depending on the drivemode selected. These drive modes offer uniqueways of helping the driver achieve the best pos-sible driving economy. The vehicle also stores driving statistics that can be viewed in the form of a bar graph.
Hybrid-unique symbolsThe various gauges and indicators in the instru- ment panel show the relationship between theelectric motor's current power consumption andthe remaining power available.
Indicates the currently available outputfrom the electric motor. A solid symbolindicates that the electric motor isbeing used.
Indicates the currently available output from the electric motor. A hollow sym-bol means that the electric motor is not being used.
Indicates the output level when the gasoline engine starts. A solid symbolindicates that the gasoline engine isbeing used.
Indicates the output level when the gasoline engine will start. A hollowsymbol indicates that the gasoline engine is not being used.
Indicates that the hybrid battery is being charged.
Indicates the current charge level in the electric motor's battery. This indica-tor is located by the hybrid batterygauge in the lower right corner.

This hybrid battery indicator is located between the hybrid gauge and the fuel gauge on the lowerright side of the instrument panel. It indicates thecurrent (charge level) remaining in the hybrid bat-tery, which can be used to power the electricmotor or to heat/cool the vehicle.

Before a long distance trip
It is always worthwhile to have your vehicle checked by a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician before driving long distances. Yourretailer will also be able to supply you with bulbs,fuses, spark plugs and wiper blades for your usein the event that problems occur.
As a minimum, the following items should be checked before any long trip:
• Check that engine runs smoothly and that fuel consumption and the oil level are normal.
• Before leaving on a trip, fill the fuel tank andmake sure the hybrid battery is fully charged.During the trip, make a habit of refueling reg-ularly.
• Check for fuel, oil, and fluid leakage.
• Check condition of drive belts.
• Check state of the battery's charge.
• Examine tires carefully and replace thosethat are worn. Also, check tire inflation pres-sure.
• The brakes, front wheel alignment, and steer-ing gear should be checked by a trained andqualified Volvo service technician only.
• Check all lights, including high beams.
• Reflective warning triangles are legallyrequired in some states/provinces.
• Have a word with a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician if you intend to drive in countries where it may be difficult toobtain the correct fuel.
• Consider your destination. If you will be driv-ing through an area where snow or ice arelikely to occur, consider using snow tires.
Driving economically
Better driving economy can be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid starts and stopsand adjusting the speed of your vehicle to imme-diate traffic conditions.
Driving economically with the XC90 T8Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid
Plan your driving in order to utilize the electric motor as much as possible. An energy-conserving driving style lowers current consumption from the hybrid battery and helpsincrease electric driving range.
Charging
• Charge the hybrid battery regularly using the charging cable. Whenever possible, begin adrive with a fully charged battery.
• Check the location of charging points.
• Where possible, choose parking spaces withcharging points.
