parking position P.

ment and become trapped. There is arisk of
an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, alway stake the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.

to prolonged exposure to extreme heato r
cold, there is arisk of injury ,possibly even
fatal .Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
GWARNING
If the child restraint system is subjected to
direct sunlight, parts may get very hot. Chil-
dren may burn themselves on these parts,
particularl yonthe metal parts of the child
restraint system. There is arisk of injury.
If you leave the vehicle, taking the child with
you ,alway sensure that the child restraint
system is not exposedtod irect sunlight. Pro-
tect it with ablanket, for example. If the child
restraint system has been exposedtod irect
sunlight, let it cool downb efore securing the
child in it. Never leave children unattended in
the vehicle.
Always make sure that all vehicleo ccupants are
positioned properly in their seats and have cor-
rectly fastened their seat belts. Take particular
care with children.
Please take note of the safety notes on seat
belts (
Ypag e45) and the notes on their correct
use (Ypag e45).
Ab ooster seat may be necessary to achieve
propers eat beltp ositioning for children over
41 lbs (18 kg )until they reach aheight where a lap/shoulder beltc
an be installed properly with-
out abooster seat.
Special seat bel tretractor
GWARNING
If the seat beltisr eleased while driving, the
child restraint system wil lnolonger be
secure dproperly.T he special seat beltr etrac-
tor is disableda nd the inertia real draw sina
portion of the seat belt. The seat beltc annot
be immediatel yrefastened. There is an
increased risk of injury ,possibly even fatal.
Stop the vehiclei mmediately, paying atten-
tion to road and traffic conditions. Reactivate
the special seat beltr etractor and secure the
child restraint system properly.
All seat belts in the vehicle, except the driver's
seat belt, are equipped with aspecial seat belt
retractor. When activated, the special seat belt
retractor ensure sthat the seat beltc annot
slacken once the child seat is secured.
Installing achild restraint system:
XMake sure you observe the child restraint
system manufacturer's installation instruc-
tions.
XPul lthe seat belts moothly from the belto ut-
let.
XEngage seat beltt ongue in beltbuckle.
Activating the special seat beltr etractor:
XPullthe seat belto ut fullyand let the inertia
reel retract it again.
Whil ethe seat beltisr etracting, you should
hear aratcheting sound .The special seat belt
retractor is enabled.
XPush the child restraint system downsot hat
the seat beltist ight and does not loosen.
Removing the child restraint system and deac-
tivating the special seat beltr etractor:
XMake sure you observe the child restraint
system manufacturer's installation instruc-
tions.
XPress the release button of the seat belt
buckle and guide the seat beltt ongue back
toward sthe belts ash guide.
The special seat beltr etractor is deactivated.

If th edriver'sorf ront-passenger door is open,
th eo pen door is no tlocked.
All other doorsa nd thetailgate/rear doors
are locked.
If as lidingd oor or th etailgate/rear door is
open,o nlyt he driver'sa nd front-passenger
doorsa re locked.
You canno tunlock th evehicle centrally from the
inside if th evehicle has been locke dwitht he
key.
If th evehicle has been locke dusingt helocking
butto nfor th ecentral lockin gand adoor is
opened from th einside, only th edoor that has
been opened is unlocked.
If th evehicle has previously been locke dwith
th ek ey,o pening adoor from th einside will trig-
ger th eanti-thefta larm system. Switch off the
alarm (
Ypage 66).

Side-mounted additional turn signal
lamp
The additiona lturn signals are mounted on the
side of the vehicle's front fender.
XSwitch off the lighting system.
XSlide additiona lturn signal :forwards and
swing it out.
XPress the bul btothe rear.
XApplying light pressure to the bulb, turn it
counter-clockwise and remove it from the
bulbh older.
XPress the new bul binto the bul bholder and
screw it in clockwise.
XAttach additiona lturn signal :at the front
and engage.

Breaking-in notes
Important safetyn otes
In certain drivingand drivingsafetysystems, the
sensors adjust automatically while acertain dis-
tance is being driven after the vehicle has been
delivered or after repairs. Full system effective- ness is not reached until the end of this teach-in
procedure.
New or replaced brake pads and brake discs
only reach their optimal brakin geffecta fter a
few hundred kilometers of driving. Until then,
compensat efor this by applying greater forcet o
the brake pedal.
The first 1000 miles (1500 km)
For the servicel ife and economy of your vehicle
it is crucial that you break in the engin ewith due
care.
RTherefore, protect the engin efor the first
1000m iles (1500k m) by drivingatv arying
vehicle and engin espeeds.
RAvoid overstraining the vehicle and high
engin espeeds during this period, e.g. driving
at full throttle. Do not exceed Øof the max-
imum speed for each gear.
RDo not change down agear manually in order
to brake.
RTry to avoid depressingt he accelerator pedal
beyond the point of resistance (kickdown).
After 1000m iles (1500km), you can increase
the engin espeed gradually and accelerate the
vehicle to full speed.
iYou should also observet hesenotes on
breaking-in if the engin eorparts of the drive
train on your vehicle have been replaced.
Driving

Flammable materials introduced through
environmental influence or by animals can
ignit eifinc ontact with the exhaust system or
parts of the engin ethat heat up. There is arisk
of fire.
Carry out regular checks to make sure that
ther eare no flammable foreign materials in
the engin ecompartmen torinthe exhaust
system.
GWARNING
If you switc hoff the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant function sare only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect, for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect. You will require considerably
more efforttos teer and brake. There is arisk
of an accident.

GWARNING
If the parkin gbrake has not been fully
released when driving, the parkin gbrake can:
Roverheat and cause afire
Rlose its hold function.
There is arisk of fire and an accident. Release
the parkin gbrake fully before drivingo ff.
!Warm up the enginequickly. Do not use the
engine's full performanc euntil it has reached
operatin gtemperature.
Only shift the automatic transmission to the
desired drive position when the vehicle is sta-
tionary.
Where possible, avoid spinning the drive
wheels when pulling away on slippery roads.
You could otherwise damage the drive train.

ing the engine, the pedal trave lmay be shorter
and pedal resistance higher.
If yo udepres sthe brake pedal agai nafter
starting the engine, pedal trave land resist-
ance will be back to norma lagain.
Automatic transmission
