the cause corrected . If the brake fluid level is too
low, the brake warning/ind icator light will illumi­
nate. Contact an authorized Audi dealer

a te ly.
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experienced technician.
Brake fluid absorbs mo isture from the air. If the
water conte nt in the brake fluid is too h igh, cor­
ros ion in the brake system may resu lt after ape­
riod of time. The boiling poi nt of the brake flu id
will also dec rease cons iderably and decrease
braking pe rformance.
Therefore, the b rake fluid must be changed
e ve ry
two year s.
Always use new b rake fluid wh ich con­
forms to Fede ral Motor Veh icle St andard "FMVSS
116 DOT 4".
The brake fluid reservoir can be diff icult to reach,
therefore, we re commend that yo u have the
b rake fl uid changed by yo ur autho rized
Audi
deal er.
Your dealer has the cor rect too ls, the
right brake fluid and the know -how to do this for
you.
A WARNING
- Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored
only in the closed original container out of
the reach of chi ldren!
- B rake failure can resu lt from old or inappro­
pr iate brake flu id. Observe these precau­
t io ns:
Ch eck ing and Filling
-Use only brake fluid that meets SAE speci­
ficat ion
J 1703 and conforms to Federal
Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always check
with your authorized Aud i dealer to make
sure you are us ing the correct brake fluid .
The co rrect type of brake flu id is also i ndi­
cated on the b rake fluid reservoir.
- The brake flu id must be new. Heavy use of
the b rakes can cause a vapo r lock if the
bra ke fluid is left in the system too long.
T his can se riously affe ct the efficiency of
t h e b rakes as we ll as you r safety . This
could resu lt in an accident.

B rake flu id will damage the paint of your ve h i­
cle.

Because of the p roblem of proper d isposa l of
brake fluid as well as the spec ial too ls re­
q uire d and the necessary expertise, we rec­
ommend that yo u have the bra ke fluid

Battery
General information
Under normal ope rat ing condit ions, the batte ry
in you r A udi does not need any mainte nance.
Wi th
high o utside temperatures or long daily
drives we recommend that yo u have the elec tro ­
lyte level checked by an authorized A udi dealer or
qualified workshop . The electro lyte level should
also be checked each time the battery is charged
~ page 231.
Have the batte ry checked when you take your ve­
hicle in for service. You are we ll advised to re­
place a battery that is older than S years.
Wi th certain types of airbag deployment, the
battery is d isconnected from the veh icle electri ­
ca l system for safety reasons¢.&.

Filling a tire
.,. Shake the bottle thoroughly before filling.
.,. Screw the accompanying filling hose complete­
ly onto the bottle. This breaks through the foil
seal automatically at the connection .
.,. Remove the valve cap from the tire valve and
unscrew the valve insert using the accompany­
ing valve insert tool

.,. Lay the valve insert on a clean surface .
.,. Remove the sealing plug from the filling hose
and connect the hose to the tire valve .
.,. Hold the bottle with the bottom facing upward
and empty the entire contents into the tire .
.,. Then pull out the hose and screw the valve in­
sert tightly back into the tire valve.
258 Inflating a tire
.,.
Screw the filling hose for the compressor onto
the tire valve and insert the connector into the
cigarette lighter.
.. Inflate the tire to between 29 PSI (200 kPA)
and 36 PSI (250 kPA) and read the pressure on
the gauge .
.,. If this tire pressure is not reached, drive your
vehicle approximately 33
ft (10 meters) for ­
ward or backward so that the sealant can be re­
distributed inside the tire. If at this time the re­
quired air pressure still cannot be reached, the
tire is too badly damaged and cannot be re­
paired with the tire sealant.
Final inspection
.,. Stop the vehicle after driving for about 10 mi­
nutes and check the tire pressure.
.,. If the tire pressure is lower than 19 PSI
(130 kPA), then the tire is too severely dam­
aged. Do not continue driving. Please seek pro­
fessional assistance .
&_ WARNING
- Turn on the emergency flashers if you have a
flat tire while in moving traffic. This is for
your protection and the for the safety of
other drivers.
- Take care to move all of the passengers to a
safe place (behind a guard rail for example) .
- Read and follow the manufacturer's safety
precautions on the compressor and in the instructions on the bottle of sealant!
- If a tire pressure of 29 PSI (200 kPA) cannot
reached after inflating for 12 minutes, then
the tire is too severely damaged. Do not
continue driving.
- Obtain qualified help if it is not possible to
perform the repair with the tire sealant .
- If the tire pressure is less than 19 PSI
(130 kPA) after 10 minutes of driving, then
the tire is too severely damaged . Do not
continue driving. Seek professional assis­
tance .

Special care is required if you are repairing
the tire on a steep incline.
@ Tips
- Do not operate the compressor for more
than 12 minutes continuously, otherwise it
can overheat. Once the compressor has
cooled, you can continue to use it.
- If sealant has spi lled out, let it dry and then
you can remove it by peeling it away like a
foil.
- Remember to obtain a new bott le of sealant
from your authorized Audi dealer after re­
pair ing a tire. After this, the functionality of
the tire repair set is restored .
- Obey all laws.
Replacing wheels
Before changing a wheel
Observe the following precautions for your own
and your passenger's safety when changing a
wheel.

A WARNING
You or your passengers cou ld be inj ured while
changing a wheel if you do not follow these
safety precautions:
- If you have a flat tire, move a safe distance
off the road. Turn off the engine, turn the

emergency flashers on and use other wa rn­
ing dev ices to alert other motorists.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
place away from the vehicle and well away
from the road and traff ic.
- To help prevent the veh icle from moving
suddenly and possib ly slipping off the jack*,
always fully set the parking brake and block
the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel be­ i n g changed with the fold ing c hocks or oth­
er objects . When one front whee l is lifted
off the ground, placing the Automatic
Transmission in P (Park) w ill
not prevent the
veh icle from moving.
- Before you change a wheel, be sure the
gro und is leve l and firm.
If necessary, use a
sturdy board under the jack*.
- Always s tore the vehicle too l kit, the jack*
and the replaced tire in the lugg age com­
partment

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow the sequence

order.

When removing or installing the whee l, the
rim could hit the brake rotor and damage the
rotor. Work carefu lly and have a second per­

Never use the hexagonal socket in the handle
of the screwdriver to loosen or tighten the
wheel bolts.
- Pull the reversible blade from the screwdriv ­
er before you use the hexagonal socket in
the handle to turn the wheel bolts.
- When mounting tires w ith
unidirectional
tread design
make sure the tread pattern is
pointed the right way
Q page 263.
- The wheel bolts should be clean and easy to
turn. Check for d irt and corrosion on the
mating surfaces of both the wheel and the
hub. Remove all dirt from these surfaces be­
fore remount ing the wheel.
Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the
right direction .
Using a spare tire with a tread pattern
intended for use in a specific direction
When using a spare t ire with a tread pattern in­
tended for use in a specific direction, please note
the following:
- The direct ion of rotat ion is marked by an arrow
on the side of the tire.
Emergency assistance
- If the spare tire has to be installed in the incor­
rect direction, use the spare tire on ly tempora­
r il y since the tire will not be able to ac hieve its
optimum performance characterist ics with re­
gard to aquap lan ing, no ise and wear.
- We recommend that you pay part icu lar atten­
tion to th is fact during wet weather and that
you adjust your speed to match road cond i­
tions.
- Rep lace the flat tire w ith a new one and have it
installed on your veh icle as soon as possible to
restore the handling advantages of a un id irec­
tional tire .
Notes on wheel changing
Please read the information Q page 241, New
tires or wheels
if you are going to use a spare tire
which is different from the tir es on your veh icle.
After you change a tire:
- Check the tire pressure on the spare immedi­
ately after installation.
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop.
- With steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel
bolts are correctly tightened at a torque of
105
ft lb (140 Nm).
- If you notice that the wheel bolts are corroded
and difficult to turn while changing a tire,
they should be replaced before you check the
tightening torque.
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and have
it installed on your vehicle as soon as possi­
ble. Remount the wheel cover.
Until then, drive with extra care and at reduced
speeds.

Bulbs
Replacing light bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace burned out bulbs for you.
It is becoming increasingly more and more diffi­
cult to replace vehicle light bulbs since in many
cases, other parts of the car must first be re ­
moved before you are able to get to the bu lb.
This applies espec ially to the light bulbs in the
front of your ca r wh ich you can only reach
through the eng ine compartment.

Sheet meta l and bu lb holders can have sharp
edges that can cause serious cuts, and parts
must be correctly taken apart and then properly
put back together to help prevent breakage of
parts and long term damage from water that can
enter housings that have not been properly re­
sealed.
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace any bulbs for
you, since your dealer has the proper tools, the correct bulbs and the expertise.
Ga s d ischar ge lam ps (Xeno n light s)*:
Due to the high e lectrica l voltage, have the bulbs
rep laced by a qualified technician. Headlights
with Xenon light can be identified by the h igh
voltage sticker.
A WARNING
-
Contact with high-voltage components of the
electr ical system and improper replacement
of gas discharge (Xenon) headlight bulbs can
cause ser ious persona l injury and death .
- Xenon bulbs are pressur ized and can ex­
plode when being changed .
- Changing Xenon lamps requires the special
tra ining, instruct ions and equ ipment .
- Only an authorized Audi dealer or other
qualified workshop should change the bulbs
in gas discharge lamps .
A WARNING
There are parts with sharp edges on the open­
ings and on the bulb ho lders that can cause
serious cuts.
- If you are uncertain about what to do, have
the wor k performed by an authorized Audi
dea ler or other qual ified workshop. Ser ious
personal injury may resu lt from improperly
performed work .

-If you must replace the light bulbs you rself,
always remember that the eng ine compart­
ment of any vehicle is a hazardous area to

When jump starting or charging the bat ­
tery, never connect the negative ground ca­
ble to tbe battery negat ive post because the
battery manager system must be ab le to de­
tect the battery's state of charge. Always
connect the negative ground cable to the
negative ground post of the battery manag­
er contro l unit .
Use of jumper cables
Make sure to connect the jumper coble clomps in
exactly the order described below!

jumper cables is intended to provide a jump start for your vehicle.

automatic transmission to N (Neutral) or P
(Park) and set parking brake .

Connect POSITIVE(+) to POSITIVE (+) (red)

1. Connect one end of the red positive cab le on
the

der cover= "positive") of the vehicle to be

2. Connect the other end to the positive termi-
nal @ of the booster battery @.
Connect NEGATIVE(-) to NEGATIVE(-)
(black)
3. Connect one end of the black negative cable
to the negative te rm i nal @of the booster
battery @.
4. Connect the other end of the bla ck negative
cable to the
jump start bolt@ (Bolts wi th
hex head = "negative") of the vehicle to be
started @.
Starting the engine
.. Start the engine of the vehicle with the booster
battery @. Run the eng ine at a moderate
speed .
.. Start engine w ith discharged vehicle battery®
in the usual manner .
.. If the engine fails to start: do not keep the
starter cranking for longer than 10 seconds.
Wait for about 30 seconds and then try again .
.. With eng ine running,
remove jumper cables
from both veh icles in the exact
reverse order .
.. Close the
cover @on the positive terminal and
re-install the cover (!)¢

T he battery is vented to the outside to prevent
gases from entering the vehicle interior . Make
sure that the jumper clamps are well connected
with their
metal ports in full contact with the
battery term inals.
& WARNING ~
To avoid serious personal injury and damage

tions of the jumper cable manufacturer. If in
doubt, call for road
service.
