Introduction
General notes
The driver information display inside the instru­
ment cluster provides you, the driver, with much
useful information .

Information from the driver information sys tem
is shown in the display in the center of the instru­
ment cluster .
When you turn on the ignition and while you a re
driving, some functions and vehicle components
are scanned for their operating status. Malfunc­
tions or required service procedures are signaled
aud ibly and shown by red and yellow lighted
symbo ls and reminders to the d river in the dis­
p lay.
The driver is also shown informat ion about rad io
and CD operat ion and direct ions for the naviga­
tion system* . You can find addit ional information
on these sub jects in t he radio or MMI* manual.
The illustrations in the instrument panel display
differ in some of the veh icles .

If pr io rity 1 or pr iority 2 faults are not shown by
the Auto Check Control, the name of the radio
station yo u are tu ned to or the frequency and the
reception range are shown in the upper area of
the disp lay .
When the CD is in use , the tit le of the track being
played is shown. The CD changer d isp lays the
numbe r of the c urrent CD (CDl to CD6).

The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed ac­
cordingly . The display works in two stag es:
Service reminder
30 days before the next se rvice is due, a service
reminder appears in the d isplay when yo u turn on
the ignition
~ fig. 14.
After about 5 seconds the display switches back
to normal. The distance and time remain ing are
updated each time the ignition is turned on until
the date due for service is reached.
Service due
When the due date for serv ice is reached, the
message
Service due! appears in the instrument
cluster immediately after yo u turn on the igni­
tion. Additionally, a warning tone sounds . After
about
5 seconds the display switches back to nor­
mal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due, can
be shown in the radio or MMI* display by select­
ing the serv ice interval d isplay in the car menu .

Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer will reset the corre ­
sponding service schedule after perform ing the

appropriate service on your vehicle . You also have
the possibility to reset the oil change schedule
after having performed an oil change accord ing
to Audi specifications. Select

- Only reset the oil change display when you
have completed an o il change.
- If you disconnect the battery term inals, no
calculations can be made for the se rvice in ·
terval display dur ing this time and no serv­
ice rem inder will appear. Remember that
observ ing the proper service intervals is vi­
tally impo rtant to extending the life of your
vehicle, particularly the engine, and main­
ta ining its va lue. Do not exceed the time in­
terval for the next service, even if the vehi­
cle mileage is low.
(D Tips
The information in the Service Reminder re­
mains stored even when the vehicle batte ry is
disconnected.
On-board computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on cur­
rent and average fuel mileage , average speed,
fuel range and driving time .

The following informa tion is cont inuo usly evalu­
ated by the trip computer and can be displayed
sequent ia lly in the inst rument cl uste r display:
Fuel range
The estima ted cruising range in miles ( km) ap­
pea rs in t he d isp lay. Th is tells you how far your
ve hicle wi ll be able to trave l on the curren t tank
of fuel and with the same driving style. The dis ­
p lay changes in increments of 5 miles (10 km) .
Average fuel mileage The aver age f uel economy in M PG (l/ 100 km)
since you las t clea red the memory appears in this
d is p lay . You can use this d isplay to adjust your
d riving technique to ach ieve a desired mileage .
Current fuel mileage
The in stantaneous f ue l cons umption in miles per
g all on (l/ 100 km) is shown in th is display. Yo u
c a n use th is d isp lay to ad just yo ur dr iv ing tech ni­
que to achieve a desi red mileage .
F ue l cons umption is re calc ula ted at inte rvals of
3 3 ya rds (30 meters).
Average speed The average speed in mph (km/h) si nce the last
time the display was reset appea rs in the disp lay .
Elapsed t ime
The length of time that you have been driving
since you last reset the memory appears in t his
d isplay .
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the last
time the memory was cleared appears in the dis­ p lay.
(D} Tips
- Fuel consum ptions (average and c urrent),
r ange and speed are displayed in metric
units on Canadian models.
- All stored val ues will be lost if the ve hicle
batte ry is disconnected .

The trip computer is equipped with two fully au­
tomatic memories as well as an efficiency pro­
gram*.

Single-trip memory (Trip computer 1)
The sing le-trip memory sto res the tr ip info rma­
t ion from the time the ignition is turned on unt il
it is tu rned off . If the t rip is continued within 2
hours from the time the ign ition was t urned off,
th e n ew data will be include d in th e calcu lation of
t h e cur rent t rip information . If the tr ip is in te r­
r upte d for more th an 2 hours the memo ry is re­
set au tom atically .

Description

The efficiency program can help you to use less
fuel.
It evaluates driving information in reference
to fuel consumption and shows other equipment inf luencing consumption . Fuel economy messag­

The efficiency program uses distance and con­
sumption data from trip computer

are deleted in the eff iciency program, those val­
ues are also reset in tr ip computer

Driver in forma tion system
Other equipment that is current ly affecting fuel
consumption is listed in the efficiency program.
The display shows up to three other items of
equipment @. The equipment using the most
fuel is listed first. If more than three items using
fuel are switched on, the equipment that is cur ­
re ntly using the most fuel is displayed.
A scale @also shows the current total consump­
tion of all other equipment.
Fuel economy messages

Fuel economy messages are displayed when fuel
consumption is increased by certain conditions. If
you follow the se fuel economy messages, you can
reduce your vehicle's consumption of fuel. The
messages appear automatically and are only dis­
played in the efficiency program . The fuel econo­
my messages turn off automatically after a cer­
tain period of time.
" To turn a fuel economy message off immedi­
ately after it appears, press the
I RESET! button

(D Tips
-Once you have turned a fuel economy mes­
sage off, it w ill only appear again after you
turn the ignition on aga in.
- T he fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in inter­
vals over a period of time .

On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢• in the
instrument cluster
c:::> page 14, fig. 8 is part of the
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignition is switched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stabilized . This indi­
cates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light doe s not go out after the engine is
started, or illuminates while you are driving, a malfunction may exist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelera­
tions) and have the condition corrected. Contact
your authorized Audi dealer.
If the light illuminates, the electronic speed lim­
iter may a lso be malfunctioning. For more infor­
mation

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate (only vehicles
with gasoline engine)

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monitored
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code . In case of a malfunction, the com­
ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.

The M IL light may also illuminate if there is a
l eak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the light illum inates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel f iller cap is prop­
erly closed (only vehicles with gasoline engine)
c:::> page 215.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the special diagnostic equip­ ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
c:::> fig. 21.
Your authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the nec­
essary repair .
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for per­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli­
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with tires
that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the max imum speed
of your veh icle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is operat ­
ed at excessive speeds, your veh icle also has an
electronic speed limiter. The electronic speed
limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the tire speed rating . For more information
c:::> page 241.
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed signals, the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL) ¢•will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.

Your vehicle's top speed is electronically limited
to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check contro l monitors the funct io n of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim ­
p ly makes sure these features and components
a re working properly . T he Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
wheneve r the ve hicle is driven .

If a component is ma lfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repa ir has been detected, this will
a p pear in the ins trument cluste r display . You w ill
a lso hear an audib le wa rning tone . T he disp lays
a re color coded in e ithe r re d or yellow depe nding
o n their level of p rior ity .
A red symbol means
Danger , a yellow symbo l in ­
d icates
Warning . In ce rtain s ituations, informa­
tion message for the dr ive r appea r in a ddi tion to
the re d and yellow sym bols.
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Co ntrol w ill automatically pe r­
form a test each time you switch o n the ignition .
W it h the selector lever in P o r N, the fo llow ing
m essage appe ars in t he disp lay :
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R ,
D , etc.), the message w ill disappea r and the A u­
to -Check fu nction is d isplayed .
If th e re is a malfunct io n, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds afte r yo u
start the ve hicle. At the same time you w ill hear a
war ning tone.

shop to have the malfunct ion corrected.
If the ABS system malfunctions, the ABS warn­ ing/indicator light illuminates together with the
brake system malfunction warn ing/ indicator

A WARNING
-Always observe the warnings in
c::> page 220, before opening the hood and
c heck ing the b rake fl uid.
- Driv ing with low brake fl uid is a safety haz­
ard. Stop the car and get professiona l assis­
tance.
- If the
111111 (USA models) . (Canada mod­
els) b rake system indicator light turns on to­
ge ther with the ABS and ES C i ndica to r
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed . Functions that stabilize the ve ­
hicle are no longer available. This could

cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the
risk of s liding. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop and have the malfunction correct­
ed.
- L Engine cooling system malfunction
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible.
If the . symbo l flashes in the disp lay, either the
engine coo lant
temperature is too high or the en­
gine coolant
level is too low. A driver message
appears as well to explain the malfunct ion in
more deta il. The driver warn ing goes out after
about 5 seconds, but it can be brought up at any
t ime by pressing the
!SET ! button agai n.

If the engine coo lant level is correct, then the ra­
diato r fan may be the ca use of the malfunct ion.
A WARNING
- I f you r vehicle should break down fo r me-
chan ica l or other reasons, par k at a safe dis ­
tance from moving traffic, tu rn off the en­
g ine and turn on the hazard warning lights
c::> page 54, Emergency flashers.
- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coo lant escaping from the engine
compartment -you risk being scalded. Wait
until you can no longer see or hea r steam or
coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perfo rm any
work in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and a llow it to cool. Follow the

warn ing stickers c::>page 220. Ill-

m inates . There is a malfunction in the eng ine
cooling system -you could damage your en­
gine.
'l=:;r: Engin e oil pressure malfunction
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immedia te service or repair. Driving wi th a
low oil pressure indi cation is likely to cause se­
vere engine damage .
If the . symbol on the display flashes, the en ­
g ine oil pressure is too low . A driver message ap­
pears as well to explain the malfunction in more
deta il. The driver warn ing goes ou t afte r about 5
seconds, but it ca n be bro ugh t up at any t ime by
p ressing the
IS ET I but ton again.

• Stop the veh icle .
• Turn the eng ine off.
• Check the eng ine oi l level

Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil level is too low, add eng ine oil

Engine oil level correct
If the symbo l. flashes even though the engine
oil leve l is correct, p lease contact your nearest
authorized Audi Dealer for assistance. Do not
continue dr iv ing . Do not leave the engine running
idle, either .
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicato r for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip .
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil

If there is a malfunction in the electronic steer ­
ing column lock, the steering cannot be un­
locked.

malfunction in the e lectronic stee ring co lumn
l ock. A driver message appears as well to exp la in
the malfunct ion in more detail. The driver warn­
i ng goes out afte r about 5 seconds, but it can be
broug ht up at any time by press ing the
ISET ! but ­
ton aga in.
Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!
• Contact your nea rest authorized Audi dealer .
• Do
not tow your veh icle .
A WARNING
Your ve hicle must not be towed in the event
of a malfunction in the electronic steering
column lock because it cannot be steered due
to the loc ked st eering . If i t is towed with the
ste ering locked, t here is t he risk of an a cci­
d ent.
© -Ignition lock malfunct ion
A malfunction in the ignition lock must be re­
paired immediately.
If the . symbo l in the display b links , there is a
malfunction in the e lectronic ignition lock . A d riv ­
e r message appears as well to explai n the mal­
funct ion in more de tail. The d rive r warning goes
out af ter abou t 5 se co nds, b ut it can be brought
u p at any t ime by pressi ng the
!SE T! b utton ag ain .
