The driver informotion system is operated using
the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel.

You can call up the following informat ion in the
on-boa rd computer:
- Date
- Dr iving t ime from the short-term memory
- Average consumption from the short-term
memory
- Average speed from the short-term memory
- Distance driven from the short-term memory
- Current fuel consumption
- Short-term memory overview
- Long-te rm memory

The short-term memory collects driving informa
tion from the time the ignition is switched on un
ti l it is switched off. If you continue driving with
i n two hours after switching the ignition off, the
new values are included when calculating the cur-
rent trip information.

Unlike the short-term memory, the long-term
memory is not erased automatically. You can se
lect the time period for evaluat ing trip informa
tion yourself.

Fuel consumption
The cu rrent fue l consumption can be shown us
ing a bar graph¢
fig. 8. The average consump
tion stored in the short-term memory is also dis
p layed. If the bar is green, your vehicle is saving
fuel through one of the following functions:
- Recuperation : electrical energy can be stored in
the battery when the vehicle is coasting or driv
ing downh ill. The bar will move toward 0.
-Cylinder on demand system*: the engine auto
matically switches four cylinders
(4.0L TFS!) or
six cylinders (6.3L FSI) off when lower power
output is required and other conditions are met . This change is not noticeable to the pas
sengers. The cylinders will switch on again
when higher power output is needed.

The efficiency program can help you to use less
fuel.
It shows other equipment influenci ng con
sumption and fuel economy messages provide
tips for efficient driving. The efficiency program
uses distance and consumption data from trip
computer

To display the efficiency program, call up Vehicle
functions
and select the menu option Efficiency
program.
Other equipment
Other equipment that is current ly affecting fuel
consumption is listed in the view
Consumer. The
display shows up to three other items of equ ip
ment @¢
fig. 9. The equipment using the most
fuel is listed first. If more than three items using
fuel are switched on, the equipment t hat is cur
rently using the most fuel is displayed.
A scale @also shows the current total consump
tion of all other equipment .
Fuel economy messages
Fuel economy messages a re displayed when fuel
consumption is increased by certain conditions
~ fig. 10. If yo u follow these fuel economy mes
sages, you can reduce your vehicle's consumption
of fuel. The messages appear automatically and are only displayed in the effic iency program. The
fuel economy messages turn off automatically
after a certain period of time.
To turn an economy message off immediately af
ter it appears, press any button on the multifunc -
tion steering wheel. ..,_

-When not in use, to reduce fuel consumption,
wind noise and to guard against th eft.
A WARNING
- Use of an unapproved roof rack or incorrect
mounting of an approved roof rack can
cause the roof rack or the items attached to
it to fall off the roof onto the road.
- Objects falling from the roof of a vehicle can
cause a crash and personal injury.
- Only mount the roof rack on the designated
locations on the roof

- The roof rack system must be installed ex
actly according to the instructions provided.
- When driving with a roof rack system,
changes to the center of gravity and wind
resistance can change the vehicle handling
and lead to a collision . Always adapt your
driving and your speed to the current condi
tions.
@ Note
- Your vehicle warranty does not cover any
damages to the vehicle caused by using roof
racks or mounting structures not approved
by Audi for your vehicle. The same applies to
damage resulting from incorrect roof rack installation .
-Always check the roof rack mountings and
hardware before each trip and during a trip
to make sure everything is securely tight
ened. If necessary, retighten the mountings
and check the entire system from time to
time.
- After mounting a roof rack system, or when
you transport objects on the roof of your ve hicle, the height of the vehicle is naturally
increased. Be careful when driving under
low bridges or in parking garages for exam
ple. This could cause damage to the load
and even the vehicle itself .
- Make sure the open rear lid and the sun
roof* do not come into contact with the roof
rack .
Seats and storage
Loading the roof rack
Always distribute loads evenly. Make sure any
thing on the roof rack is securely tied down .

.,. Always attach items to the roof rack securely
before you drive off .
The maximum permissible roof weight is
220 lb
(100
kg) . The roof weight is the total of the
weight of the roof rack, the attachments and the
cargo you are carrying . You must also not exceed
the maximum load weight for the roof rack you
are using.
When using a roof rack system which has a lower
load carrying capacity, you must not use up the
total maximum permissible load carrying capaci
ty specified above. Instead, you should load the
roof rack system only to the maximum capacity
specified by the manufacturer of the roof rack
system.

Weak, damaged or improper straps used to
secure items to the roof rack can fail during
hard braking or in a collision and cause seri
ous personal injury .
- Make sure the roof rack is installed exactly
as specified above

-Always use suitable mounting straps for se
curing items to the roof rack to help prevent
items from shifting or flying forward.
- Items on the roof rack must always be se
curely mounted.
- The use of a roof rack can negatively affect
the way a vehicle handles . Cargo that is
large, heavy, bulky, long or flat will have a
greater negative influence on the vehicle's
aerodynamics, center of gravity and overall handling. Always drive slowly, avoid sudden
braking and maneuvers when transporting
cargo on the roof of your vehicle.
- Never exceed the maximum permissible
load carrying capacity of the roof of your ve
hicle, the permissible axle weights and the
permissible total weight of your vehicle

Driving through water on
roads
Note the following to avoid vehicle damage when
driving through water, for example on flooded
roads:
- The water must not be any higher than the bot
tom of the vehicle body.
- Do not drive faster than wa lking speed.
A WARNING
After driving through water, mud, slush, etc.,
the brakes may be slow to take effect because
of wet brake rotors and pads . Dry the brakes
first by brak ing carefully to restore the full
brak ing effect.

- Keep in mind that oncoming ve hicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your vehicle to drive
th rough safely.
- Avo id driving through salt water because it
can cause corrosion.

mentally-friendly driving
General
Your personal style of driving will determine the
economy of your vehicle, as well as exhaust and
nois e levels .
Fuel economy, e nv ir onmental impact, and wear
o n your eng ine, brakes and tires large ly depend
on three factors:
- your personal driving style
- operat ing cond itions
- technical limitations
If you anticipate what you need to do next and
drive economically, you can easily cut your fuel
consumption by 10-15 percent. Th is section will
give you some tips on how you can help the envi
ronment and your pocketbook .

The consumption estimates as published by
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre
spond to your actual consumption on the
r oad, which w ill vary depending upon vehicle
l oad and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length , etc.
Drive smoothly and keep a lookout ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler
ating.
.,. Avoid unnecessary accelerat ing and braking .
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler at ing . If you anticipate what is going to happen
next, you w ill need to brake less and, thus, accel
erate less. Let the vehicle coast whenever possi
ble - for example when you see that the next traf
fic lig ht is red.

Avoid full throttle
Driving at moderate speeds saves fuel and im
proves your mileage .
.,. Try and keep well below your car's maximum
speed .
Accelerating gent ly reduces fue l consumption,
engine wear, and does not disturb the environ ment.
Fue l consumption, exhaust emissions and engine
noise increase d isproportionately at high speeds.
If you drive at approximately three quarters of
top speed, fuel consumption will be reduced by
one half. Never drive faster than the posted
speed limit and weather conditions permit.
Reducing unnecessary idling
Even when your car is just idling it burns up fuel.
.,. Shut the engine off when you are not driv ing
the vehicle.
.,. Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the en-
gine run at idle .
The idling phase is automatically reduced for
veh icles with the Start-Stop-System*. It is effi
cient to switch off the eng ine in vehicles without
the Start -Stop -System when stopped at ra ilroad
crossings and long red lights . Turning the engine
off for just 30-40 seconds saves more fuel than is bu rned by starting the engine aga in.
It takes a long t ime for the engine to warm up
fu lly when it is running at idle . However, wear
and noxio us em iss ions are espec ially high when
the engine is wa rm ing up. So you sho uld drive
away as soon as you start the engine a nd avoid
running at high rpms while the engine is still
warming up.

Do not leave engine idling unattended a fter
starting . If warn ing lights should come on to
indicate improper operation, they wou ld go
unheeded. Extended idling a lso produces
heat, wh ich co uld result in overheat ing or

other damage to the vehicle or othe r proper
ty.
Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot of fuel.

By hav ing your veh icle regularly serv iced by an
Audi dealer he lps to ensure that it runs p roperly
and e conomi cally. The cond ition of you r vehicle
not only affects its safety and ab ility to hold its
val ue, it also affects
fuel con sumption .
Check your oil each t ime you fill your tank .
The amount of oi l used is related to engine load
and speed .
It is normal for the oil consumption of a new en
gine to reach its lowest value after a certain mile
age has been driven .
You must drive your vehicle about 3,000 mi les
(5,000 kilometers) before you can properly as
sess oil consumpt ion.
This also app lies to fue l consumption and engine
output .

function of the em ission control system and

- Do not alter or remove any component of
the Emission Contro l System u nless ap
proved by the man ufacturer.
- Do not alter or remove any device, such as
heat shields, switches, ign ition w ires,
valves, which are designed to protect your
vehicle's Emission Contro l System and other
impo rtant ve hicle compone nts.
Fewer short trips
Fuel consumption will always be relatively high
on short trips.
11-Try to avoid driving short distances with a cold
engine.
The engine and catalyt ic converter have to reach
their optimal
op erating tempe ratur e to reduce
fuel consumption and noxious emissions effec tively .
Just after starting, a co ld eng ine in a mid-s ize car
only achieves a fuel economy of 6-8 miles per
gallon (30-40 l/100 km). After about a half a mile, fuel economy cl imbs to 12 mpg (20 l/100
km). After about
2 .5 miles (4 km), the engine is
at its proper operating temperature and fuel
economy has reac hed a norma l level. So you can
see tha t you should avo id short t rips w henever
possib le.
The
outside temperature is also cr itical in this re
g ar d. Yo ur car consumes mo re fuel in the w in ter
tha n in the s umme r.

after oil consumption has stabilized .
Unde r no rmal condi tions, the rate of o il con
sumpt ion depends on the quality and viscosity of
the oi l, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operat ed, the ambient tem
perature and road cond itions . Further factors are
the amount of oil dilut ion from water condensa
tion or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the
oil. As any eng ine is subject to wear as m ileage
bu ilds up, the oil consumption may increase over
time until rep lacement of worn components may
become necessa ry .
W ith all these variables com ing into play, no
standard rate of oil consumpt ion ca n be estab
lished or specified . There is no a lternative to reg
ular and frequent checking of the oil leve l, see
Note .
