approximately the first 15 minutes when
the engine is cold is recommended. The
amount of time until the engine is warm de­
pends on the outside temperature. Check
the engine oil temperature* if necessary
¢ page 32.
-Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant . This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy en­
gine load.
- The front spoiler also he lps to distr ibute
cooling air correct ly wh ile driving. If the
spo iler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over ­
heating will increase. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­
cility for assistance.
@ Tips
Diesel engines: due to the high efficiency of
these engines, the engine may not always
reach operating temperature in cold outside
temperatures. This is normal and not a cause
for concern.

In addition to the indicator lights in the display,
there are addit ional ind icators in the tachometer .
They blink or turn on to indicate functions or mal­
functions . Messages @ may also appear briefly
with some indicator lights. A warning tone
sounds at the same time.
If there is more than one malfunction, the indica ­
tor lights will turn on one after the other for a short time.
The ind icator lights and messages in the display
can be covered by other d isplays . In cases where
the indicator light @ is hidden, the central ind i­
cator light © will remain visib le until the mal­
function is corrected.

Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly as a funct ion
check when you sw itch the ignition on. These sys­
tems are marked with a./ in the following tab les.
If one of these ind icator lights does not turn on,
there is a malfunction in that system .
Your vehicle has either a monochrome display or
a multicolored disp lay, depending on vehicle
equipment. In a monochrome display, the indica­

I f the 13:B indicator light turns on if there is a
malfunction in the engine control.
Drive slowly to an author ized Audi dealer or au­
thor ized Audi Service Facility to have the eng ine
checked .
If the
13:B indicator light turns on when you start
the eng ine, there is an automatic start malfunc­
tion . To start the engine, follow these steps :

W Engine control (diesel engine)
Applies to vehicles: with diesel engine
The engine is preheating if the II indicator light
turns on when the ign ition is switched on.
If the indicator light blinks whi le driving, there is
a ma lfunction in the engine control.
Drive slow ly to an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility to have the ma l­
function corrected.
If the
II indicator light turns on when you start
the engine, there is an automatic start ma lf u nc­
tion. To start the engine, proceed as follows :

o System indicator light (MIL)
The system indicator light (MIL) is part of the On
Board D iagnost ic system (OBD II). Tht>

bol turns on when the ignition is switched on and
turns off again once the engine is started and
running at a steady idle speed . This indicates that
the MIL is functioning correct ly.
The ind icator light turns on if there is a malfunc­
t ion in the engine electronics. See an author ized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fac il ity to
have t he malfunction corrected .
The system indicator light (MIL) may turn on if
the fuel filler cap is not closed correctly
¢ page 230.

.m,, Diesel particulate filter
Applies to vehicles: with diese l eng ine and diese l particulate
filter
II Particulate filter: system fault! See owner's
manual
T he diese l particu late filter requires regenera­
tion . To support the filter's self-cleaning func­
t ion:
Drive for approximately 15 minutes at
40 mph
(60 km/h) or above in the S selector lever posi­
tion . Keep the engine speed around
2,000 RPM .
The temperature increase that will result from
th is can burn off the soot in the fi lter. The indica­
tor light will turn off when the cleaning has com­ pleted successfully .
If the indicator light does
not turn off, drive im­
med iate ly to an authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility to have the malfunct ion
corrected .
A WARNING
Always adapt your speed to the current
weather, road and traffic condit ions. You
should neve r disobey traffic laws in order to

A pp lies to ve hicles : w ith e ngin e spee d limit ation
[II Max. engine speed: XXXX rpm
The engine speed is automatically limited to the
speed displayed in the driver information system.
This protects the engine from overheating.
The engine speed limitation deactivates once the
engine is no longer in the critical temperature
range and you have released the accelerator ped­
al once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated by
an engine control malfunction, the
[m indicator
light also turns on. Make sure the engine speed
does not go above the speed displayed, for exam­
ple when downshifting. Drive to an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility im­
mediately to have the malfunction corrected.
~ Engine oil level (min .)
II Check oil level
You may continue driving for the time being.
Check the engine oil level as soon as possible
¢page 240.
-If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil
qpage242.
- If the engine oil level is correct and the indica­
tor light still turns on, drive at low engine
speed to an authorized Audi dealer or author­

Description
Different systems could be installed.

The climate control system* cools and removes
humidity from the air in the vehicle interior. It is
the most effective when the windows and panor­
ama sunroof* are closed.
If there is a build-up of
heat inside the vehicle, ventilation can help to
speed up the cooling process. For this reason, the
windows and panorama sunroof can be opened from the outside .

Pollutant filter
The pollutant filter removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the air .
Key recognition
You can store various settings for the manual and
automatic
climate control system* and assign
them to the key being used.
A WARNING
Poor visibility can lead to accidents.
- For safer driving, keep all windows free of
ice, snow and fog.
- Become familiar as quickly as possible with
the correct use and function of the cl imate
control system, especially with the defrost­
ing and defogg ing function.
- When the temperature is below freezing,
only use the windshield washer system after

the windshield has been warmed by the cli­
mate control system. The washer fluid could
freeze on the windshield and impair visibili­
ty.
Cl) Note
- If you suspect that the climate control sys­
tem is damaged, switch the system off to
prevent further damage and have it checked
by an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility.
- Repairs to the Audi climate control system
require special technical knowledge and
special tools. See an authorized Aud i dealer
or authorized Aud i Service Facility .
@ For the sake of the environment
Reducing the amount of fuel used also re­
duces the amount of pollutants that enter the
air.
(D Tips
- To prevent interference with the heating
and cooling output and to prevent the win­
dows from fogging over, the a ir intake in
front of the windshie ld must be free of ice,
snow or leaves.
- Condensation from the cooling system* can
dr ip and form a puddle of water unde r the
vehicle. This is norma l and does not mean
there is a leak.
- Th e energy management system may switch
the seat heating* or rear window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are available
again as soon as the energy supply has been
restored.
- The f lows through the vents under the rear
window. Make sure the openings are not
covered when placing clothing on the lug­
gage compartment cover .

The functions are controlled using three dials and
buttons . The LED in a button will light up when
the function is switched on.

Manual climate control system*
For a comfortable temperature, we recommend :
- in warmer times of the year, set the tempera-
ture so that it is only a few degrees below the
outside temperature .
- set the blower at a moderate speed
- don't direct the air flow directly on the passen- gers
IA/C l Switching the cooling mode* on and off
The cooling mode only functions with the blower
turned on . The air is not cooled and humidity is
not removed when cooling mode is switched off.
This can cause fog on the windows. The cooling
mode switches off automatically when there are
cold outside temperatures.
~ Adjusting the blower
To prevent the windows from fogging over, the b lower should a lways run at a low speed. When
the w indows are fogged, we recommend using a
higher blower speed and tu rning the knob to~-

dows are defrosted or cleared of condensation as

The dial adjusts the temperature and the blower
speed . Press the buttons to turn the functions on
or off. The LED in a button wi ll light up when the
function is switched on.

Automatic climate control system
We recommend pressing the IAUTOI button and
se tti ng the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C). The au­
tomatic climate control system automatically
maintains a temperature once it has been set.
The air temperature coming from the vents, the
b lower speed, and the a ir distribution are also
automatically adjusted. In all heating mode func­
tions except
defrost, the blower only switches to
a higher speed once the eng ine coolant has
reached a ce rtain temperature .

A WARNING
You should not use the recirculation mode for
an extended period since no fresh ai r is drawn
i n . With the air-conditioning* switched off,
the w indows can fog up, whic h increases the
risk of an accident.
IA/C l Switching the cooling mode on and off
The cooling system is turned on and off with the
IAJC I button. The air is not coo led and humidity is
not removed when cooling mode is switched off .
This can cause fog on the windows. The cooling
mode switches off automatically when there are
cold outside temperatures.
I AUTO I Switching automatic mode on and off
The automatic mode is turned on using the
IAUTOI button. AUTO mode switches off once a
button in the climate control system is pressed.
Automatic mode maintains a constant tempera­
ture inside the vehicle. Air temperature, a irflow
and air distribution are controlled automatically.
When automatic mode is active, pressing the
IAUTOI button b rief ly act ivates the "Eco"
mode*

If the rear window defogger is activated when
the ignit ion is switched on, the battery manage­
ment determines based on the battery charge if
i t is possible to turn o n. Otherwise, the rear w in­
dow defogge r funct ions w ith the engi ne runni ng
and swit ches off a utomat ica lly af te r approxi ­
mately 1 0 - 20 m inu tes, depending on the out ­
s ide temperature.
To p reve nt the rear window defogger from
swi tching off a utoma tically, press and hold the

remains stored u p to a pproximately 15 minutes
after t urn ing off the ignition.
