of vision. They do, however, make objects appear smaller in the mirror.
These mirrors are therefore only of limited use for estimating distances to

When the engine is switched off the mirror dims automatically depending on
the light falling on the sensors.
When the interior lights are switched on or the reverse gear is engaged, the
mirror always moves back into the basic position (not dimmed).

or in the vicinity of the interior mirror »

The illuminated display of an external navigation device can lead to op-
erational faults to the automatic dimming interior mirror – risk of accident.■
Automatic mirror dimming operates only properly if the light striking the
sensors is not affected by other objects.
WARNINGThe mirrors with automatic dimming contain an electrolyte liquid which can
escape if mirror glass is broken.■
The leaking electrolytic fluid can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory
system.
■
If your eyes or skin come into contact with the electrolytic fluid, immedi-
ately wash the affected area for several minutes plenty of water. If neces-
sary get medical assistance.

Folding in the exterior mirrors
The whole exterior mirror can be manually folded towards the side windows.
To restore it to its original position, fold back from the side window until it au-
dibly clicks into place.WARNINGDo not touch the exterior mirror surfaces if the exterior mirror heater is
switched on - risk of burns.
Note
If the electrical mirror setting fails at any time, the mirrors can be adjusted by

The rear seat backrest can be folded forwards to increase the size of the lug-
gage compartment. The seat backrests can also be folded forward individually
on vehicles with divided rear seats.
Before folding the seat backrests forwards, adjust the position of the front
seats in such a way that they are not damaged by the folded seat backrests.

WARNING■ In occupied rear seats make sure that the respective seat backrests are
properly engaged.■
After folding back the seat back, the seat belts must be ready for use.

The seat backrests must be securely latched in position so that no ob-
jects from the luggage compartment can slip into the passenger compart-
ment under sudden braking – risk of injury.
■
When transporting objects in the luggage compartment that has been en-
larged by folding the backrest forward, ensure the safety of the passengers
transported on the other rear seats.
CAUTION
Ensure that the seat belts are not damaged when operating the seat backr-
ests. Under no circumstances must the rear seat belts be jammed by the fol-
ded back seat backrests.

side panel.

When transporting cargo the instructions below must be followed
▶ When transporting heavy objects, the driving characteristics change due to
the shift in the centre of gravity. The speed and style of driving must be ad-
justed accordingly.
▶ The cargo is stowed in the luggage compartment. To prevent this from mov-
ing, it should be secured with suitable lashing straps to the lashing eyes or
secured with fixing nets.
▶ Distribute loads as evenly as possible.
▶ Place heavy objects as far forward as possible.
▶ Items carried in the luggage compartment must be stowed in such a way
that no objects are able to slip forward under sudden driving manoeuvres or
braking – risk of injury.
▶ Match the tyre pressure to the load.
▶ When transporting loads in the luggage compartment that has been en-
larged by folding the rear seats forward, ensure the safety of the passengers
transported on the other rear seats.
In the event of an accident, even small and light objects gain so much kinetic energy that they can cause severe injuries.
The magnitude of the kinetic energy is dependent on the speed at which the
vehicle is travelling and the weight of the object.
Example: In the event of a frontal collision at a speed of 50 km/h, an object
weighing 4.5 kg produces energy corresponding to 20 times its own weight.
This means that it results in a weight of approx. 90 kg “ ”.
Luggage compartment light
The warning light turns on when tailgate is opened.
The warning light turns off when the tailgate is closed.
If the boot lid is open and the ignition switched off, the light will extinguish
automatically after around 10 minutes.WARNING■ Never exceed the maximum permissible load of the respective fasteners,
nets, hooks etc., as heavy objects are not sufficiently secured - there is a
risk of injury!■
If the cargo is tied down with unsuitable or damaged lashing straps, inju-
ries can occur in the event of braking manoeuvres or accidents.
WARNING (Continued)■ Loose cargo can be thrown forward during a sudden manoeuvre or in case
of an accident, and can injure the occupants or other road users.■
Loose cargo could hit a deployed airbag and injure occupants – danger of
death!
CAUTION
■ Never exceed the maximum permissible load of the respective fasteners,
nets, hooks etc. - these could be damaged.■
Please ensure that the heating elements for the rear window heater are not
damaged as a result of abrasive objects.

Information on cooling system
The cooling system operates only if the following conditions are met
» page 95 .
The warning light in the 
» Fig. 117 button lights up after activation, even if
some of the conditions for the function of the cooling system have not been
met. The operational readiness of the cooling system is indicated by the indi-
cator light in the button lighting up.
If recirculated air mode is turned to position  when the blower is on, the
cooling system is switched on. The cooling system is switched off again by
turning the air distribution control out of the position  .
ABCIf recirculated air mode is outside position
 when the recirculating air mode
is on, the cooling system is switched on.
Note
During operation of the manual air conditioning, an increase in engine idle
speed may occur under certain circumstances in order to ensure sufficient
heating comfort.

perature of the outflowing air, the blower stage and air distribution.

Switch the cooling system on/off
After the cooling system is switched off, only the ventilation function remains active, whereby the lowest temperature that can be reached is the outside
temperature.
Set the temperature
The temperature can be set between +16 °C and +29 °C. The temperature is
regulated automatically within this range.
If  illuminates in the display, then the Climatronic works with
maximum cool-
ing (temperature setting below +16 °C).
If  illuminates in the display, then the Climatronic works with
maximum heat-
ing (temperature setting above +29 °C).
There is no automatic temperature control in the two end positions.
Switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit

terior of the vehicle.
In recirculated air mode air is sucked out of the interior of the vehicle and then
fed back into the interior.

With the key in the ignition, the ignition can be switched on and off and the
engine can be started / stopped.
WARNING■ While driving with the engine stopped, the ignition must always be
switched on » page 101, Turn ignition on / off and start the engine .
■ With the ignition off, the steering may lock » page 100 - danger of an
accident!■
Do not withdraw the ignition key from the ignition lock until the vehicle
has come to a stop » page 108, Parking . Otherwise, the steering may lock -
danger of an accident!
■
Never leave the key in the vehicle when you exit the vehicle. Unauthor-
ized persons such as children could lock the car, turn on the ignition or start
the engine -risk of injury, accidents and damage!
■
Never leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running - risk of acci-
dent, damage or theft!
■
Never switch off the engine before the vehicle has come to a halt – risk of
accident.
WARNING■ Never (e.g. in garages) run the engine in a closed place - risk of poisoning
and death!■
Do not leave any items (e.g. cleaning cloths or tools) in the engine com-
partment. There is a fire hazard and the risk of engine damage.
■
Never cover the engine with additional insulation material (e.g. with a
blanket) – risk of fire.
CAUTION■ Only start the engine when the engine and the vehicle are stationary - risk of
starter and engine damage!■
Do not push-start the engine – there is a risk of damaging the engine and
the catalytic converter. The battery from another vehicle can be used as a
jump-start aid » page 174.
Note
Do not warm up the engine while the vehicle is stationary. If possible, start
your journey as soon as the engine has started. The engine reaches its operat-
ing temperature faster this way.
Electronic immobilizer
Read and observe
and on page 100 first.
The electronic immobiliser (hereinafter referred to as "immobiliser") makes apossible attempted theft or unauthorized use of your vehicle more difficult.
An electronic chip is integrated in the head of the key. The immobiliser is deac-
tivated with the aid of this chip when the key is inserted in the ignition lock.
As soon as the ignition key is removed from the ignition lock the immobiliser is
automatically activated.
Operational problems
If a component in the immobiliser key fails, it is not possible to start the en-
gine. A corresponding message appears in the display of the instrument clus-
ter to explain the immobiliser is active.
To start, use the other vehicle key or seek help from a specialist garage.

The steering lock (steering lock) deters any attempted theft of your vehicle.
