After approximately 30
minutes has elapsed
with the operation mode in ACC, the function automatically cuts out the power for the audiosystem and other electr
ic devices that can be
operated with that mode. When the engine switch is pressed while theoperation mode is in ACC, the power is sup- plied again to
those devices.

With the F.A.S.T.-key, warnings are given through buzzers and di
splays on the information screen in the multi information displ
ay in order to pre-
vent mistaken operati
ons or vehicle theft.
When a warning operates, be sure to check the vehicle and the F.
A.S.T.-key. A warning is also di
splayed if there is a problem i
n the F.A.S.T.-key.
CAUTIONWhen the engine is not running, put the oper- ation mode in OFF. Leaving the operationmode in ON or ACC for a long time whenthe engine is not running may cause the bat- tery to be discharged
, making it impossible
to start the engine. When the battery is disconnected, the current operation mode is memorized. After recon-necting the battery, the memorized mode is selected auto
matically. Before disconnect-
ing the battery for repair or replacement, make sure to put the operation mode in OFF. Be careful if you are not sure which opera- tion mode the vehicle is in when the batteryis run down. The operation mode cannot be changed from OFF to ACC or ON if the F.A.S.T.-key is not detected to be in the vehicle. Refer to “Oper- ating range for starting the engine andchanging the operation mode” on page 5-14.

NOTE
It is possible to modify functions as follows: • The time until the power cuts out can be changed to approxi
mately 60 minutes.

The operation mode can be in any mode to start the engine. The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 15 seconds if the engine switch is released at once. Pressing the engine switch again while the starter motor is still turning will stop the startermotor. The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 30 seconds while theengine switch
is pressed.
If the engine does not start, wait for a while and then attempt to start the engineagain. Trying repeatedly with the engine or starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2for instructions. A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolanttemperature display starts to move or the low coolant temperature indicator goes out. Refer to “Engine
coolant temperature
display” on page 5-128 or “Low coolant temperature indica
tor” on page 5-166.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This system automatically controls fuel injection. There is no need to depress the acceleratorpedal when starting the engine. To prevent battery drai
n, wait a few seconds
between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal downfirmly with your right foot. 4. Make sure the selector
lever is in the “P”
(PARK) position.
If there is a fault in the steering wheel lock, the warning display will
appear. Immediately

Startability of the en
gine with an ambient
temperature of -22 °F (-30 °C) or lowerWhen the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to start from a standstill even wi
th the selector lever
in the “D” (DRIVE) position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans- axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it doesnot indicate a problem.
If this occurs, place
the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position and let the engine idle
for at least 10 minutes.
The transaxle will wa
rm up, and you will be
able to start normally.
Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation. The MIVEC engine automatically switches its intake-valve contro
l between a low-speed
mode and a high-speed mode in accordancewith driving conditions for maximum engine performance.
N00568201024
NOTE
The engine can only be started when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N”(NEUTRAL) position. For safety reasons,
the engine should be
started when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position in which the driving wheelslock.NOTE
Minor noises may be he
ard on engine start-
up. These will disappear
as the engine warms
up.
When the engine is hard to start
Using the MIVEC engine
NOTE
To protect the engine, the high-speed mode may not be selected wh
ile the engine coolant
temperature is low. In such a case, the enginerevolutions do not rise to over 5,000 rpm even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.
Stopping the engine
WA R N I N G Do not operate the en
gine switch while
driving except in an emergency. If theengine is stopped whil
e driving, the brake
servomechanism will ce
ase to function and
braking efficiency will deteriorate. Also, the power steering system will not func-tion and it will require greater manual effort to operate the steering. This could result in a serious accident.

Theft-alarm system 5-44 Features and controls
5
N00510201267
The theft-alarm system is designed to provide protection from unauthorized entry into the vehicle. This system
is operated in three
stages: the first is the “armed” stage, the sec-ond is the “alarm” stage, and third is the “dis- armed” stage. If triggered, the system provides both audible and visual alarm sig-nals.
N00510301200
Park the vehicle and st
op the engine. Arm the
system as described below.
1. Except for vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key, remove the key from theignition switch. For vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.- key, put the operation mode in OFF.2. Make sure that the engine hood is closed. 3. Lock all doors and the liftgate by using the keyless entry system or the F.A.S.T.-key operation. At this time, the theft-alarm indicator (A) on the instrument panel flashes for confir-mation.
4. The system has entered the armed stage after about 20 seconds, when the theft-alarm indicator (A) flashing becomes slower. The theft-alarm indicator (A) continues toflash while the system is in the armed stage.
CAUTION Always keep the release lever lid on the lift- gate closed when driving so that your lug-gage cannot acci
dentally bump the lever and
open the liftgate.
Theft-alarm system
CAUTION Do not modify or add parts to the theft-alarm system. Doing so could cause the theft-alarm to malfunction.
Armed stage
Arm the system and leave
NOTE
If the engine hood is open, the theft-alarm indicator (A) illuminates and the system can- not enter the armed stage. The system enters the armed stage about 20seconds after the e
ngine hood is closed.
The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator (A) is illuminated, all doors and the liftgate are unlocked by using the keyless entry system or the F.A.S.T.-keyoperation. The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator is illuminated, the fol- lowing operation is performed.
