Engine oil and oil filter 9-6 Vehicle care and maintenance
9
N00937702040
It is normal for an engi
ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil between the recommended oil change intervals. Before starting the engine, check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently insert it all the way into the crankcase. Slowly remove it again. The oil level must not go above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line, which shows the smallest amount of oil required, remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to within the “Good” range.

CAUTION Overfilling the crankcase will cause oil aera- tion and loss of oil pressure, which coulddamage the engine.WA R N I N G Used engine oil is poisonous, and can dam- age your skin. Prolonged and repeatedcontact may cause serious skin disorders, including dermatitis and cancer. Don’t let used oil touch your skin. Wash thoroughlyafter working with it. Keep used oil out of the reach of children.NOTE
Engine oil consumption is greatly influenced by payload, engine speed, etc.

Mitsubishi Motors recommends using only engine oils with the ILSAC certification sym- bol on the front of the container. If you cannot find oils with the ILSAC certi- fication symbol, use an API classification SNor higher oil with the following label.
This mark appears on th
e top of the oil con-
tainer and tells you two important things about the oil.
N00955001136
Use engine oil with the proper thickness for the outdoor temperatures where you will be driving.
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine 0W-20 Synthetic Engine Oil is recommended for optimum fueleconomy and cold weather starting. If Mitsubishi Motors Genuine 0W-20 Syn- thetic Engine Oil is not available, 5W-20grade oils displaying the ILSAC certificationcan be used. However, Mitsubishi Motors Genuine 0W-20 Synthetic Engine Oil should be used at the next oil change to maintainoptimum fuel economy and cold weather starting.
The engine oil will deteriorate rapidly if the vehicle is subjected to severe conditions (for example, repeated operation on rough roads, in mountainous regions, on roads with many uphill and downhill gradients, or over shortdistances). Consequently, the oil will require earlier replacement in accordance with the schedule in the “WARRANTY AND MAIN-TENANCE MANUAL”.

Engine coolant 9-8 Vehicle care and maintenance
9
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine 5W-30 Engine Oil is the recommended oil for optimum engine performance and protection. SAE 0W-30 or 0W-40 engine oil is recom-mended to improve engine starting in cold weather conditions. Refer to temperature chart.
N00955100042
The oil filter should be replaced at the time ormileage specified in the “WARRANTY ANDMAINTENANCE MANUAL”. Only use high quality replacement filters on this vehicle. The manufacturer’s specifica-tions for Genuine Mitsubishi oil filters require that the filter can withstand a pressure of 256 psi (1.8 MPa). A Genuine Mitsubishioil filter is the best replacement filter.Follow the installation
instructions printed on
the filter.

The coolant reserve tank (A) lets you quickly see when you need to add coolant. When the engine is cold, the level in the reserve tank should be between the “FULL” and “LOW”marks. The radiator usually stays full so there is no reason to remove
the radiator cap (B)
except when you check the coolant freeze point or replace the antifreeze coolant.

Tires 9-22 Vehicle care and maintenance
9
Tire pressures should be checked, and adjusted if necessary, at least once a month. Pressures should be checked more often whenever weather temperatures changeseverely, because tire pressures change with outdoor temperatures. The pressures listed on the placard are always “cold inflation pres-sure”. Cold inflation pressure
is measured after the
vehicle has been parked for at least threehours or is driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km)after having been parked for three hours. Cold inflation pressure must not go above the maximum values molded into the tire side-wall. After driving several miles, your tire inflation pressure may increase 14 to 41 KPA, 2 to 6 PSI from the cold inflation pressure.Do not let air out of the tires to get back to the specified cold pressure, or your tire pressure will be too low.Check your tires each time you refuel. If one tire looks lower than the others, check the pressure for all of them. You should also take the following safety pre- cautions:
Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. (See the tire and load- ing information placard attached to the sill of the driver’s door.) Stay within the recommended load limits. Make sure that the weight of any load in your vehicle is evenly distributed. Drive at safe speeds. After filling your tires to the correct pres- sure, check them for damage and airleaks. Be sure to reinstall the caps on thevalve stems.

Replacing tires and wheels
CAUTION Avoid using different size tires and wheels from the ones listed, and avoid the combined use of different types of tires and wheels.Using different size or type tires and wheels may affect driving safety. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-5.
For All-wheel drive vehicles, always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brand or the degree of wear, will increase the differen-tial oil temperature, resulting in possible damage to the driving system. Further, the drive train will be subjected to excessiveloading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or other serious prob- lems. Even if a wheel has the same rim size and offset as the specified type of wheel, itsshape may prevent it from being fitted cor- rectly. Consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice before using wheels that you have. Only Mitsubishi Motors genuine wheels should be used, because your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring sys- tem.Use of another type of wheel risks air leaks and sensor damage, as it will not be possible to install the tire pressure sensor properly.

Replacement of light bulbs 9-34 Vehicle care and maintenance
9
N00942900219
Before replacing a bulb, be sure the light is off. Do not touch the glass part of the newbulb with your bare fi
ngers; the oil from your
skin will stay on the glass and dim or destroy the bulb when it gets hot.
N00943000099
The bulb should only be replaced with a newbulb with the same ra
ting and type. The type
and rating are listed on the base of the bulb.
N00950301932
[Except for vehicles with high intensity dis-charge headlights]
If the replacement fuse blows again after a short time, have the electrical system checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair faci
lity of your choice to
find and correct the cause.
Replacement of light bulbs
CAUTION Bulbs are extremely hot immediately after being turned off. When replacing a bulb, wait for it to coolsufficiently before touching it. You could otherwise be burned.NOTE
If you are unsure of how to carry out the work as required, it is recommended that these procedures be carried out by an autho-rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. Be careful not to scratch the vehicle body when removing a light and lens.CAUTION
When it rains, or when the vehicle has been washed, the inside of the lens sometimes becomes temporarily foggy. This is the same phenomenon as when window glass mists up on a humid day, and does not indicate a func-tional problem. When the light is switched on, the heat will remove the fog. However, if water gathersinside the light, please have it checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
