The seat belt webbing may be cleaned withmild soap or detergent solution. Do not use an organic solvent. Allow the belts to dry in the shade. Do not allow them to retract until com-pletely dry. Do not attempt to bleach or re-
dye the belts. The color may rub off and the webbing strength may be affected. Regularly check your seat belt buckles and their release mechanisms for positive engage- ment and release of the latch plate. Check theretractors for automatic locking when in the Automatic Locking Retractor function. The entire seat belt assembly should be replaced if the webbing shows any obviouscuts, tears, increase in thickness in any sec-tion of the webbing from broken fibers, or severe fading from sunlight. All of these con- ditions indicate a weakening of the belt,which may adversely affect seat belt perfor- mance in an accident.

This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which includes air-bags for the driver and passengers. The SRS front airbags are designed to supple- ment the primary protection of the driver and front passenger seat belt systems by provid-ing those occupants with protection againsthead and chest injuries in certain moderate to severe frontal collisions. The SRS front airbags, together with sensorsat the front of the vehicle and sensors attached to the front seats, form an advanced airbag system. The SRS driver’s knee airbag is designed to supplement the primary protection of the driver’s seat belt system. It can reduce the forward movement of the driver’s lower legsand provide increased overall body protection in certain moderate to severe frontal colli- sions. The SRS side airbags (if so equipped) and the curtain airbags (if so equipped) are also designed to supplement the seat belts. The SRS side airbags provide the driver and frontpassenger with protection against chest inju- ries by deploying the bag on the side
WA R N I N G Any child who is too small to properly wear a seat belt must be properly restrained in an appropriate childrestraint system, to reduce their risk of serious injury or death in an accident. A child should never be left unattended in, or unsupervised, around your vehicle. When you leave the vehicle always takethe child out as well. The SRS curtain airbags provide the driver and passengers on the front seat and rear outboard seat with protection againsthead injuries by deploying a bag on the side impacted in moderate to severe side impact collisions. The SRS airbags are NOT a substitute for use of the seat belts. For maximum protection in all types of accidents, seat belts must ALWAYS be worn by everyone who drives orrides in this vehicle (with infants and smallchildren in an appropriate child restraint sys- tem in the rear seat, and older children buck- led in the rear seat). Refer to “Child restraintsystems” on page 4-14.
WA R N I N G IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT PROPERLY EVEN WITH AN AIRBAG.
• Seat belts help keep the driver and pas-sengers properly positioned. This reduces the risk of injury in all collisions, and reduces the risk of serious injuries or death when the airbags inflate.During sudden braking just before a col- lision, an unrestrained or improperly restrained driver or passengers can moveforward into direct contact with, or within close proximity to, the airbag when it begins to inflate.The beginning stage of airbag inflation is the most forceful and can cause serious injuries or death if the occupant comes incontact with the airbag at this time. • Seat belts reduce the risk of injury inrollovers, rear impact collisions, and in lower-speed frontal collisions, because the airbags are not designed to inflate inthose situations.• Seat belts reduce the risk of beingthrown from your vehicle in a collision or rollover.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BE PROP- ERLY SEATED.• A driver or front passenger sitting tooclose to the steering wheel or instrument panel during airbag deployment can be seriously injured or killed.WA R N I N G
• Airbags inflate very quickly and withgreat force. If the driver and front pas- senger are not properly seated and restrained, the airbag may not provide the proper protection and can cause seri-ous injuries or death when it inflates.• To reduce the risk to the driver of seriousinjury or death due to a deploying driver’s airbag, always properly wear your seat belt and adjust the driver’s seatas far back as possible, maintaining a position that still allows the driver to have good control of the steering wheel,brake, accelerator, and other vehicle con- trols.• To reduce the risk to the front passengerof serious injury or death from a deploy- ing passenger’s airbag, make sure thepassenger always wears the seat belt properly, remains seated upright and all the way back in the seat, and positionsthe seat as far back as possible. • Seat all infants and children in the rearseat, properly restrained in an appropri- ate child restraint system.
Airbags inflate very quickly and with great force. Do not sit on the edge of the seat or sit with your lower legs too close to the instrument panel, or lean your head or chest close to the steering wheel or theinstrument panel. WA R N I N G Infants and small children should never ride unrestrained, or lean against the instrument panel. They should never ride held in your arms or on your lap. Theycan be seriously injured or killed in an accident, especially when the airbags inflate. Infants and children should beproperly seated in the rear seat in an appropriate child restraint system. Refer to “Child restraint systems” on page 4-14.
WA R N I N G NEVER put REAR-FACING CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEMS or INFANT RESTRAINT SYSTEMS in the front pas-senger seat. This places the infant too close to the passenger airbag. During deployment of the airbag, the infant canbe seriously injured or killed. Rear-facing child restraint systems or infant restraint systems must only be usedin the rear seat.
WA R N I N G FRONT-FACING CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEMS should be used in the rear seat whenever possible. If they must be used inthe front passenger seat, move the seat to the most rearward position and make sure the child stays in the child restraint sys-tem, properly restrained. The SRS includes the following components:
The airbag control unit monitors the readiness of the electronic parts of the system whenever the ignition switch is in the “ON” or“START” position. These include all of the items listed above and all related wiring. The airbags will operate
only when the igni-
tion switch is in the “ON” or “START” posi-tion. When the impact sensors detect a front or side impact sufficient to deploy the airbag(s), the appropriate airbag(s) will be deployed.
When airbags deploy, some smoke is released accompanied by a loud noise. The smoke is not harmful, but do not intentionally inhale the smoke as it may cause temporary irrita-tion to people with respiratory problems. After deployment, the airbags will quickly deflate, so quickly that some people may not even realize the airbags inflated.Airbag inflation does not prevent the driver from seeing or being ab

and does not prevent people from leaving thevehicle.

The passenger’s airbag off indicator is located in the instrument panel.
The indicator normally comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” positionand goes out a few seconds later. In the following situa
tions, the indicator will
stay on to show that the passenger’s front air-bag is not operational. The passenger’s seat weight sensors sense a weight of less than approximately 66 pounds (30 kg) on the front passenger seat. The front passenger’s seat is not occupied.
When the weight applied to the front passen- ger seat is sensed to be approximately 66 pounds (30 kg) or greater, the indicator goesout to show that the passenger’s front airbag is operational.
WA R N I N G If any of the following conditions occur, you should immediately have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon as possible:• The SRS warning does not initially comeon when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” or “START” position.• The SRS warning does not go out afterseveral seconds.• The SRS warning comes on while you aredriving.
To ensure that the passenger’s seat weight sensors can correctly sense the weightbeing applied to the seat, observe the fol- lowing instructions. Failure to follow these instructions can adversely affect the per-formance of the passenger’s airbag sys- tem.• Adjust the seat to the correct position,and sit well back against the seatback. Refer to “Front seats” on page 4-3.• Do not recline the seatback more thannecessary.• Never have more than one person (adultor child) sitting on the seat.• Do not place anything between the seatand the floor console.• Do not hang anything on the front pas-senger’s seatback.• Do not remove the head restraints.• When attaching a child restraint system,secure it firmly.
• Do not place luggage or other objects on the seat.• Do not use a seat cover or a cushion.• Do not modify or replace the seat andseat belt.• Do not place luggage or other objectsunder the seat.• Do not place the floor mat on the seatrails.• Do not expose the sensors to liquids orvapors.• Do not subject the sensors to shock.• Do not allow rear-seat occupants to push the front passenger seat with their feet or force the front passenger seat upward.• Do not allow rear-seat occupants to graspthe front passenger’s seatback or put their arms around it.• When attaching a child restraint systemin the rear seat, make sure it does notinterfere with the front seat.
If the vehicle is involved in a severe impact, have the SRS sensors inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon as possible.

WA R N I N G In order to reduce the risk of injury from a deploying side airbag, do not allow any rear seat passengers to hold onto the back of either front seat. Special care should be taken with children. Do not place any objects near or around the front of either front seatback. Suchobjects can interfere with proper side air- bag deployment and cause injury during deployment of the side airbag. Do not place stickers, labels or additional trim on the back of either front seat. Theycan interfere with proper side airbag deployment. Do not install seat covers or re-cover seats that have side airbags. Covers can inter- fere with proper side airbag deploymentand adversely affect side airbag perfor- mance. Do not attach a microphone (A) or any other object around the part where the curtain airbag (B) deploys, such as on thewindshield, side door glass or front and rear pillars and roof side rail. When the curtain airbag inflate, the microphone orother object may be hurled with great force or the curtain airbag may not inflate correctly, resulting in death or serious injury.
WA R N I N G Do not put a hanger or any heavy or pointed object on the coat hook. If the cur- tain airbag was activated, any such item could be propelled away with great forceand could prevent the curtain airbag from inflating correctly. Hang clothes directly on the coat hook (without using a hanger).Make sure there are no heavy or sharp objects in the pockets of clothes that you hang on the coat hook. Never install a rear-facing child restraint system in the front passenger seat. Rear-facing child restraint systems MUST ONLY be used in the rear seat.
Front-facing child restraint systems should also be used ONLY in the rear seat. If a front-facing child restraint system must be used in the front passenger seat, move the seat as far back as possible, andmake sure that the child stays in the child restraint system, properly restrained and away from the door. Do not allow a child to lean against or sit close to the passenger door, even if thechild is seated in a child restraint system. The child’s head should also not lean against or be close to the section of theseatback where the side airbag and cur- tain airbag are located. It is dangerous if the side airbag and curtain airbagdeploys. Failure to follow all of these instructions could lead to serious injury or death to the child. Work done on or in the vicinity of the side airbag and curtain airbag system compo-nents should be done only by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Improper work methods can cause accidental sideairbag and curtain airbag deployment, or render a side airbag and curtain airbag inoperable. WA R N I N G Make sure all doors are tightly closed and locked while driving.• Locked doors, in combination with theuse of seat belts, can help reduce the risk of ejection in an accident.• Locked doors can help keep passengers,especially small children, from opening doors and falling out of moving vehicles.
• Locked doors can help prevent outsiders from gaining access to your vehicle when you slow or come to a stop.
Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it. Children who get into unlocked vehicles may not be able to get out. Children trapped inside vehicles can quickly beovercome by heat and suffer serious injury or death due to heat stroke. Never leave children unattended inside a vehicle. In addition to the risk of heat stroke, children can activate switches andcontrols, resulting in an injury or fatal accident.NOTE
When locking or unlocking with the key, only the driver’s door will be locked orunlocked. To lock or unlock all doors, use the power door lock switches, the keyless entry system,the F.A.S.T-key or the remote control trans- mitter of the F.A.S.T.-key. Refer to “Power door locks” on page 5-37, “Keyless entry system” on page 5-7 and 5-30, and “To operate using the F.A.S.T.-key” on page 5-14. For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always observe the following: Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly (with children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors are locked.
Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while still keeping good visibil- ity, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls.Check the instrument panel indicators and multi-information display for any possible problem. Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible. Make sure that infants and small children are properly restrained in accordance withall laws and regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode, and set the blower switch on high. You should be able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. (Refer to “Defrosting or defogging the wind- shield and door windows” on page 7-6, 7-12, 7-17, 7-22, 7-27.) Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails,glass, or other objects stuck in the tread. Look for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Check the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires(including spare tire) for proper pressures.
WA R N I N G If a floor mat is the wrong size or is not properly installed, it can interfere with the operation of the pedals. Interference with the pedals can cause unintended accelera- tion and/or increased stopping distancesresulting in a crash and injury. Always make sure the floor mat does not interfere with the accelerator or brake pedal. Always use the retaining clip on the driver’s floorboard to secure the floormat. Always install the mat with the correct side facing down. Never install a second mat over or under an existing floor mat. Do not use a floor mat designed for another model vehicle ev
en if it is a Mit-
subishi genuine floor mat. Before driving, be sure to check the fol- lowing:• Periodically check that the floor mat isproperly secured with the retaining clips. If you remove the floor mat while clean-ing the inside of your vehicle or for any other reason, always check the condition of the floor mat after it has been rein-stalled.• While the vehicle is stopped with the engine off, check that the floor mat is not interfering with the pedals by depressingthe pedals fully.
