Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This isa system that automatically controls fuel injection. There is no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine. The starter motor should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few secondsbetween attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Press and hold the brake pedal down withyour right foot. 3. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle).
4. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, makesure the gearshift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 5. While pushing the ignition switch from “LOCK” (PUSH OFF) to “LOCK” (PUSH ON), set the ignition switch to the“ON” position and confirm that all warn- ing lights and warning displays are oper- ating properly.
6. Without pressing the accelerator pedal, slowly turn the ignition switch to the “START” position to start the engine. Release the ignition switch when theengine starts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rearwindow defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi- cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST orthe clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, press the accelera- tor pedal halfway and hold it there, thencrank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.
CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine
at high rpms or drive
at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up. Release the ignition switch as soon as the engine starts. Otherwise, the starter motorwill be damaged.
Starting the engine
NOTE
For models equipped with a manual trans- axle, the starter will
not operate unless the
clutch pedal is fully depressed (Clutch inter- lock). This is a safety feature.NOTE
On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, the starter will not operate unless the gearshift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position or the gearshift lever is in the “N” (NEUTRAL)position with the brake pedal depressed. For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P” (PARK) position so that the wheels arelocked.
NOTE
Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warmsup.

2. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi- cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST or the clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, press the accelera-tor pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi-cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST orthe clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, push the accelera- tor pedal all the way down and hold itthere, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 sec- onds. Return the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position and release the acceler-ator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal or theclutch pedal, but do not push the accelera- tor pedal. Release the ignition key if the engine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. If the engine still will not start, contact your local Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible tostart from a standstill even with the gearshift lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans- mission has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem. If it occurs, place the gearshift lever in the “P” (PARK)position and let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transmission will warm up, and you willbe able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

The electronic immobilizer is designed to sig-nificantly reduce the possibility of vehicle theft. The purpose of the system is to immo- bilize the vehicle if an invalid start isattempted. A valid start attempt can only be achieved (subject to certain conditions) using a F.A.S.T.-Key “registered” to the immobi-lizer system.
WA R N I N G Make sure to remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the emergency key after the engine is started. If not removed, the F.A.S.T.-key could fall to the floor, which could disturb the pedaloperation. Furthermore, the F.A.S.T.-key could prevent the driver’s knee airbag from inflating normally or could be pro-pelled to cause serious injury if the airbag inflates.NOTE
If the emergency key is attached to a key ring, it may become impossible to insert the F.A.S.T.-key into the emergency key, and it may prevent the engine from being started. When using the emergency key to start the engine, first remove the key from the key ring.

At high altitude locations, the idle speed maybe higher. This is done in order to stabilize the idle speed when the power steering sys- tem and other systems operate. It does notindicate a malfunction.

1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop. 2. Fully engage the parking brake whiledepressing the brake pedal. 3. For vehicles with a manual transaxle, turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” posi-tion to stop the engine, and then move the gearshift lever to the 1st (on a uphill) or “R” (Reverse) (on a downhill) position. For vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, placethe gearshift lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and then turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position to stop theengine.

NOTE
While the engine coolant temperature is low, the temperature of the air from the heater will be cool/cold until the engine warms up, even if you have selected warm air with the dial. When the temperature is set to the highest or the lowest setting under the AUTO opera-tion, the air selection and the air conditioning will be automatically changed as follows. • Quick Heating (When the temperature is set to the highest setting) Outside air will be introduced and the airconditioning will stop. In this case, manual operation is possible. • Quick Cooling (When the temperature is set to the lowest setting) Inside air will be recirculated and the airconditioning will operate. In this case, you cannot select outside air and turn the air conditioning off.

Push the switch, and the air conditioningcompressor will turn on. The air conditioningindicator light (A) will come on. A sound will be made every time you push the switch.
CAUTION Using recirculated air for a long time may cause the windows to fog up.
NOTE
If the mode selection dial is set between “ ” and “ ”, you cannot turn the air con- ditioning off or select the recirculation posi- tion. This prevents the windows from fogging up. When the mode selection dial or the blower speed selection dial is set to the “AUTO” position again after manual operation, the air selection switch will also be automaticallycontrolled.
Personalizing the air selection (Changing the function setting)
NOTE
The factory setting is “Enable automatic air control”. While the mode selection dial is set between “ ” and “ ” position, the air selection will automatically change to the outside air position, even if the sy
stem is set to “Disable
