KNOWING YOUR CAR127
1
IMPORTANT The steering may become slightly stiff fol-
lowing parking manoeuvres involving a lot of steering.
This is normal and is caused by a system to prevent the
motor from overheating. No servicing is required. The
power steering system will s tart working normall y again
the next time the car is used.TPMS SYSTEM
(Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)
(for vers ions/markets , where provided)
The car may be equipped with a TPMS (Tyre Pre ssure
Monitoring System). This system compris es a radio fre-
quency transmitter fitted to each wheel (on the wheel rim
ins ide the ty re), which i s able to send information on the
t y re inflation pressure of each wheel to the control unit.
IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE TPMS
The fault indication s are not s tored and will therefore
not be dis played after the engine ha s been s witched off
and then on again. If the fault condition s pers is t, the con-
trol unit will s end the relative indication s to the ins tru-
ment panel only after the car ha s been in motion for a
s hort time.
Before starting any servicing operation, stop
the engine and remove the key from the ig-
nition switch to operate the steering lock, par-
ticularly when the wheels do not touch the ground.
If this is not possible (i.e. if the key must be kept
in the MAR position or the engine must be kept run-
ning), remove the main electric power steering sys-
tem fuse.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING
THE SEAT BELTS
The driver is responsible for complying with, and ensur-
ing that all the other occupants of the car also comply with,
the local laws in force in relation to the use of the seat belts.
Always fasten the seat belts before setting off.
Seat belts are also to be worn by pregnant women: the risk
of injury in the case of impact is greatly reduced for them
and the unborn child if they are wearing a seat belt.
Pregnant women must position the lower part of the belt
very low down so that it passes over the pelvis and under
the abdomen (see fig. 3). The best way to protect the un-
born child is to protect the mother. When a safety belt is
worn properly, it is more likely that the unborn child will
not be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for any-
one, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing
them properly.
For maximum protection, keep the backrest
upright, lean back into it and make sure the
seat belt fits closely across your chest and
pelvis. Always fasten the seat belts on both the front
and the rear seats! Travelling without wearing seat
belts will increase the risk of serious injury and even
death in the event of an accident.
fig. 3L0E0404m
The belt must not be twisted. The upper part must pass
over the shoulder and cross the chest diagonally. The low-
er part must fit over the pelvis (as shown in fig. 4) rather
than the abdomen of the passenger.
Never use devices (clips, clamps, etc.) to hold the seat belt
away from your body.
Removing or otherwise tampering with seat
belt and pretensioner components is strictly
prohibited. Any operations on these compo-
nents must be performed by qualified and autho-
rised technicians. Always go to a Lancia Dealer-
ship.

180SAFETY
Never travel with objects on your lap, in front
of your chest or with something between your
lips like a pipe or pencil, etc. In the event of
an impact where the airbags are deployed this could
cause serious injury.
Always keep your hands in the correct posi-
tion on the steering wheel whilst driving so
that if the airbags are activated they can in-
flate properly. Do not drive with your body bent for-
ward. Keep the backrest in straight position, rest-
ing your back correctly on it.
If someone tried to steal or damage your car,
and in the event of floods, have the airbag
system checked by a Lancia Dealership.
GENERAL WARNINGS
If when turning the key to MAR the ¬warn-
ing light does not turn on or if it stays on
when travelling, there could be a failure in
the safety systems; in this event airbags or preten-
sioners may not be deployed in the event of an im-
pact or, in a lower number of cases, they may de-
ploy accidentally. Before proceeding, contact a Lan-
cia Dealership immediately to have the system
checked.
Do not cover the front seat backrests with covers if
side bags are fitted.

With ignition key inserted, at MAR, even if
the engine is off, the airbags can activate al-
so with the car stopped, if it is hit by anoth-
er vehicle. Therefore, even if the car is stationary,
when an active passenger airbag is fitted, DO NOT
install rear facing child restraint systems on the
front passenger seat. Deployment of the airbag fol-
lowing an impact could cause fatal injuries to the
child. Therefore, always deactivate the passenger
airbag when a rear facing child restraint system
is installed on the front passenger seat. The front
passenger seat must also be positioned back as far
as possible in order to avoid the child restraint sys-
tem from coming into contact with the dashboard.
Immediately reactivate the passenger airbag as soon
as the child restraint system has been removed. Al-
so remember that, if the key is turned to STOP, none
of the safety devices (airbags or pretensioners) will
be deployed in the event of collision. Non-deploy-
ment in such cases does not indicate a system mal-
function. When the ignition key is turned to MAR, the
“ warning light turns on and blinks for a few
seconds to remind you that the passenger
airbag will activate in the event of a collision. Then
it should turn off.
Do not wash the seats with water or pres-
surised steam (by hand or at automatic car
seat washing stations).
The front airbags deploy in the event of more
severe collisions than those required for de-
ploying the pretensioners. For impacts in the
range between the two activation thresholds, pre-
tensioner activation alone is normal.
Do not hook rigid objects to clothes hangers
and support handles.
The airbag does not replace seat belts; it in-
creases their effectiveness. Furthermore, since
front airbags are not deployed in low speed
collisions, side collisions, rear-end shunts or roll-
overs, the passengers are only protected by the seat
belts which must be fastened at all times.

184STARTING AND DRIVING
STARTING THE ENGINE
The car is fitted with an electronic engine lock device: if
the engine fails to start, see the “Lancia CODE system”
paragraph in chapter 1.
In the first period of use, we recommend
avoiding excessive stress for the car (for in-
stance excessive accelerations, extended trav-
el at maximum speed, sudden braking etc.).
With engine off, do not leave the key in the ig-
nition switch on MAR to prevent draining the
battery.
It is dangerous to let the engine run in en-
closed spaces. The engine takes in oxygen and
releases carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide
and other toxic gases.
Remember that the brake servo and electri-
cal power steering system are not operational
until the engine is started, therefore a greater
effort will be required to press the brake pedal or
turn the steering wheel.

STARTING AND DRIVING185
3
Proceed as follows:
❍engage the handbrake;
❍ put the gear lever into neutral;
❍ turn the ignition key to MAR: the
mandYwarn-
ing lights on the instrument panel will turn on;
❍ wait for the warning lights
Yandmto turn off. The
hotter the engine is, the quicker this will happen;
❍ fully depress the clutch pedal without operating the ac-
celerator;
❍ turn the ignition key to AVV as soon as the
mwarn-
ing light goes out. Waiting too long will waste the heat-
ing work carried out by the glow plugs.
Release the key as soon as the engine starts. IMPORTANT With cold engine, the accelerator pedal shall
be completely released while turning the ignition key to
AV V.
If the engine does not start at the first attempt, turn the
ignition key to STOP again before repeating the procedure.
If instrument panel
Ywarning light remains lit when the
ignition key is turned to MAR, turn the key to STOP and
then back to MAR; if the warning light remains lit, try the
other keys provided with the vehicle. Contact a Lancia Deal-
ership if you still cannot start the engine.
The mwarning light will flash for 60 sec-
onds after starting or during prolonged
cranking to indicate a fault with the glow
plug pre-heating system. Use the car normally if the
engine starts and go to a Lancia Dealership as soon
as possible.
