Overview
Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check
the function of that system when yo u switch
the ignition on. These systems are marked
with a./ in the following tab les. If one of
these ind icator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

4 Safety belt warning light
Applies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts .
The warning light . comes o n for a few sec­
onds after the ignit io n is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety be lt .

D Battery
This warning/indicator light detects o mal­
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system.
The . warning/in dicator lig ht ill uminates
when you switch on t he ignit ion and must go
out after the engi ne has started.
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being
charged
If the indicator light turns o n an d the me s­
sage a ppears, t he re is a m alfu nct ion in the
generato r or vehicle e lectr ica l system.

The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair .
If the . symbo l appears in the disp lay and
flashes, the o il pressure is too low . In add ition
to the symbol, the followi ng message also ap ­
pears in the display :
Switch off engine! Oil pressure is too low
.. Pull off t he roa d and stop the ve hicle .
.. Shut the eng ine down.

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oil lev­
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before going on a long trip .
- The yellow oil level warn ing indication
Ill requires oil refill or workshop serv­
ice without delay. Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning symbol.

-L Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible.
When the. symbol in the display flashes,
then either the eng ine coolant
temperature is
too high, or the coolant
level is too low . In ad ­
d ition to the symbol, the following message
a lso appears in the display:
S witc h off engin e and ch eck c ool ant l evel
~ Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
~ Turnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level ¢ page 172.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 172.
~ Conti nue driving only after the eng ine cool ­
ant warn ing/ indicator l ight goes out .
~ Contact you r authorized Audi dea le r fo r as-
s istance if necessary.
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the radiator fan may be the cause of the malf unc­
tion .
If the generator warning/ind icator light
should also illuminate¢
page 16, then the
fan belt may be damaged .
A WARNING
-If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights

flasher.

- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en­ gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area. Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn
off the engi ne and allow it to cool.

Do not continue driving if the. symbo l
illuminates . There is a malfunct ion in the engine cooling system
-you could damage
your engine.
~ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator light i lluminates while you are
driv ing, there is a malfunction in the electro­
mechan ica l steer ing. If the indicator light is
showing £~ ). there may be a reduction in pow ­
er steeri ng assist . If the indicator light is
showing ., there may be a total loss of pow­
er steeri ng assist. The steer ing must be in ­
spected immed iately by a qualified wo rkshop
Q & . With the engine not running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist available .
A WARNING
-
If there is a malf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis­
tance.
~ Convertible top
The warning/indicator light monitors the con­
vertible top function.
The l!1 warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition for about 2
seconds as a check and then goes out. The
warning/indicator light has the following
funct ions:
- The light illuminates when the folding top opens or closes.
- It flashes if one of the conditions for auto­
matically lowering or ra is ing the convertible
top is not met and the switch to actuate the
convert ible top is pressed.
- The light illuminates when the convert ible
top is opened or closed
incompletely.
!;.! ~ Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the GJ ind icator lamp b lin ks wh ile d riving,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Reg ulation) is active-
ly reg ulating .

General recommen­
dations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger. Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
- your body is properly supported thus reduc­ ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and airbag system can offe r
maximum protection

In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for installing a child safety seat on the front passenger's seat. Always heed the informa­
tion regard ing child safety provided in
¢ page 129, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal injury.
- Always keep your feet on the f loor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion! This applies espec ially to the passen­
gers . If your seating position is incorrect
you increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident. If the
airbag inflates and the seating position
is incorrect this could result in personal
injury or even death.
- It is important for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of a t

least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the airbag system can­
not protect you properly. In addition to
this, the front seats and head restra ints
must be adjusted to yo ur body height so
that they can give you max imum prote c­
tion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible be tween yourself and the s teer­
ing wheel o r instrument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpected ly, caus ­
ing sudden loss of vehicle control and
personal injury . If you ad just yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's
seat in the fo llowing manner:
.,. Adj ust the seat in fore and aft direction so
t ha t you can easily push the peda ls to the
floor whi le keeping your knee sligh tly bent

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.,. Pos it ion the head restrai nt accord ing to the
occupant 's height

mum protection, the top of the head re­
straint shou ld be at least at eye level, pref­
erably higher and idea lly level with the top
of the head

A WARNING
Never place any objects in the dr iver's foot­
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal funct ion. In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
would not be able to brake or accelerate!

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into
the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
p loying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel tha n necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided ad justed
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat i n the follow ing ma nner:
• Bring the back rest up to an (a lmost) upr ight
pos it ion.
Do not r ide w ith the seat reclined .

Adjusting the manual seats
Applies to vehicles: with manual seat adjustment
Position, angle and shape of the manual
seats can be adjusted to provide safe and
comfortable seating .
Reed and heed all WARNINGS¢.&. before
you adjust your seat.
Moving the front seats forward or
backward
• Lift the leve r CD¢ page 60 , fig. 67 and slide
the seat to the desired position .
• Release the lever and then move the seat
fu rther until you fee l and hea r it engage.
Adjusting the seat height
• Pull the lever ® up and pump it to raise the
seat.
• Push the lever down and pump it to lower
the seat .
Adjusting the seatback angle
• Lean forward to take your weight off the
seatback.
• Turn the hand wheel © in the d irection you
want the seatback to tilt.

- Never adjust the drive r's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
If you do th is w hile the veh icle is moving,
you will be out of posi tion. A lways ad just
the dr iver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.

height . Check to see that no one is in the

switch in exactly the same direction you want
the corresponding part of the seat to move.

LD._ WARNING
- Never adjust the driver's or front passen­
ger seat while the vehicle is moving. If
you do this whi le the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of position. Always adjust
the dr iver's or front passenger seat when
the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat he ight. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or ser ious injury could result!
- Because the seats can be e lectrically ad­
justed with the ignition key removed,
never leave children unattended in the
veh icle. Unsupervised use of the electric
seat adjustments may cause serious in­
Jury.

-To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never ride in a moving ve­
hicle with the seatback reclined. Safety
belts and the airbag system offer maxi­
mum protection only when the seatback
is upright and the safety belts are prop­
erly posit ioned on the body. The more
the seatback is reclined, the greater the
risk of personal injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts!
- Always make sure the front seatbacks are
in the upright position and securely
locked in place when driving.
Head restraints

The head restraints must be adjusted proper­
ly to provide protection .

The head restraints on the front seats can be
adjusted to provide safe support to head and
neck at the optimum he ight . When optimally
adjusted, the top of the restra int should be
leve l with the top of the head

Using the pass-through and the removable
ski bag, you can transport long objects (e .g.
skis) neatly and without damaging the interi­
