Remote control key or convenience key
The convenience key is a vehicle remote contro l
key with special functions¢ page 36, Locking
and unlocking with the convenience key and
¢ page 75, Starting and stopping the engine
(vehicles with a convenience key) .
With the remote control key, you can lock and un­
lock the vehicle centrally and start the engine.
Number of keys
You can check the number of keys assigned to
your vehicle in the MMI. This allows you to make
sure you have received all of the keys when you
purchase a used vehicle. Select: the
I MENU I but­
ton
> Car> Systems * control button > Program­
med keys.
Replacing a key
If a key is lost, see an authorized Audi dealer or
author ized Audi Service Facility. Have this key de­
activated. It is important to bring all keys with
you .
If a key is lost, you should report it to your
insurance company.
Immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents unauthorized use of
the vehicle. The vehicle may not start if another

radio device such as a key for another vehicle or a
transponder is located on the key ring.
Data in the remote control key or
convenience key
While driving, service and maintenance -relevant
data is continuous ly stored on your remote con­
trol key or convenience key*. Your Audi service
advisor can read out this data and tell you about
the work your vehicle needs.
A WARNING
-- Always take the vehicle key with you when
leaving the vehicle, even for a short period
of time. This applies particularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could star t the engine or operate
electrica l equipment such as power win­
dows.
- Do not remove the key from the ignition lock
until the vehicle has come to a complete
stop. Otherw ise, the steering lock could en­
gage suddenly and increase the risk of an ac­
cident.
(D Tips
The operation of the remote control key can
be temporari ly disrupted by interference from
transmitters in the vicinity of the vehicle
working in the same frequency range (e .g. a
cell phone, radio equipment).
Central locking system description
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally.
There are d ifferent ways, depending on vehicle
equipment:
- Remote control key ¢page 35,
- Lock cylinder on the driver's door ¢page 37,
or
- Sensors in the front door hand les on vehicles
with a convenience key* ¢ page 36,
- Central locking switch inside <=:>page 37.

- Only use the remote control key or conven­
ience key within view of the vehicle.
- Do not use the remote control when you are
inside the vehicle. Otherwise, you could un­
intentionally lock the vehicle. If you then
tried to start the engine or open a door, the
alarm would be triggered. If this happens, press the unlock button
m.
- The vehicle can only be locked when these­
lector lever is in the
P posit ion.
- Only use the panic function in an emergen­
cy.

Locking and unlocking with the
convenience key

remote control key .

Only the front doors and luggage compartment
lid can be unlocked or locked . T he remote control
key must be within a range of about
5 ft (1.5 m)
from the door or the luggage compartment lid . It
makes no difference whether the remote control
key is in your jacket pocket, purse or briefcase .
If you grip the door handle wh ile locking, this can
adversely affect the locking function .
The door cannot be opened for a brief period di­ rectly after locking it. This allows you the oppor­
tunity to check that the driver's door is locked .
The settings in the
MMI specify if the entire vehi­
cle or one of the doors is unlocked when unlock­
ing the vehicle¢

If your vehicle is left standing for a long peri­
od of time, note the following:
- The proximity sensor switches off after a
few days to save energy. You then have to
pull once on the door handle to unlock the
vehicle and a second time to open it.
- To prevent the battery from drain ing and to
retain the starting ability of your vehicle as
long as possible, the energy management
system gradua lly tuns off unnecessary con­
venience functions You may not be able to
unlock your vehicle using the convenience
key .

Selecting All and pressing the~ button on the
remote control key unlocks the entire vehicle.
If you select
Driver and then press the~ button
on the remote control key, only the driver's door
will unlock. In vehicles with a convenience key,
only the front door whose handle you pull will
unlock. If you press the~ button twice, the en­
tire vehicle will unlock. If you press the~ button,
the entire vehicle will always lock.
Folding* the exterior mirrors

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents unauthorized use of
your vehicle.
A microchip in the key automatically deactivates
the electronic immobilizer when the key is locat­
ed in the vehicle.
If you remove the key from the
vehicle, the electronic immobilizer activates
again automatically.

Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. The electronic immobilizer
can be deactivated with the key, so this could
make it possible for unauthorized persons to
start the engine and operate vehicle systems
such as the power windows or sunroof. This
can increase the risk of serious injury.
(D Tips
-The vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used.
It may not be possible
to start the vehicle under certain circum­
stances, for example if there is another ra­
dio module like the key from another vehicle
or a transponder on the same keychain.

Safety central locking

Safety central locking provides the possibility, to
only unlock the driver's door and the fuel filler
door. The rest of the vehicle remains locked.

"' Press the remote control key or convenience key

Child safety lock
When the safety button®~ fig. 29 is pressed,
the@ symbol in the button lights up. The power
window switches in the rear doors are switched
off.
A WARNING
- When you leave your vehicle - even if only
br iefly -always remove the ignition key. This
applies part icularly when children remain in
the vehicle. Otherwise the children could start the engine or operate e lectr ica l equip­
ment (e.g. power windows). The power win­
dows are functional until the driver 's door o r
passenger's door has been opened .
- Pay caref ul attent ion when closing the win­
dows.
It could cause injury by pinching .
- When locking the veh icle from outs ide, the
vehicle must be unoccupied since the win ­
dows can no longer be opened in an emer­
gency.

(D Tips
After turning the ignition off you can st ill
open and close the windows for approximate ­
ly 10 seconds. The power windows are not
switched off unti l the driver's door or pas­
senger's door has been opened.
Convenience opening/closing
With the convenience opening/closing funct ion,
you can centrally and easily open the windows and the panorama sunroof* from the outside.

A WARNING
- Never close the w indows or panorama sun­
roof* care lessly or in an uncontrolled man­
ner, because this increases the risk of injury.
- For secur ity reasons, the w indows can only
be opened with the remote control key at a
maximum distance of approximately 6 feet
(2 meters) from the vehicle.
- Pay attention when using the lock cylinder
to close the w indows and the panorama
sunroof* so that no one is pinched. Closing
stops when the key is moved into the start­
ing position.
Correcting power window malfunctions
After disconnecting the vehicle battery, the one­ touch up and down feature must be activated
again .
.,. Pull the power wi ndow switch until the window
is completely ra ised.
.. Release the switch and pull it again for at least
one second.

cause you cannot steer and brake as you
usually would, this could lead to crashes
and serious injuries.
- Please note that the brake booster and pow­
er steering only work when the engine is
running. When the engine off, you must use
more force to steer or brake the veh icle. Be­
cause the usual steering and braking capa­
bility is not avai lable, the risk of accidents or
injuries inc reases.
- Always take t he vehi cle key with you when
leaving the vehicle, even for a short period
of time. This applies partic ularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle . Otherwise the
children could start the engine or operate
electrical equipment such as power win­
dows.
- For safety reasons, always park the vehicle
with the selector lever in the P position.
Otherw ise, there is the risk that the veh icle
could roll.
- After the engine has been switched off, the radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10
minutes -even with the ignition switched
off.
It can also switch on again after some
t ime if the coolant temperature rises as the
result of heat bu ildup or if the eng ine com­
partment is heated by the s un's rays and the
engine is hot .
(D Note
If the eng ine has been under heavy load for
an extended per iod of t ime, heat bu ilds up in
the eng ine comp artment after the engine is
sw itched off -there is a r isk of damaging the
engine. For this reason, let the engine run for
at idle for approximate ly two minutes before
shutting it off.

It may not be possible to start the engine under
certain circumstances, for example if the battery
in the vehicle key is drained, if interference is af­
fected the key or if there is a system malfunc­
tion.

is not different from a two wheel drive vehi­
cle. Do not be tempted to accelerate to a
high speed when the road is slippery th is in­
creases the r isk of an accident.
- Note that on wet streets, the front wheels
can "hydrop lane" if driving at speeds that
are too high . Unlike front whee l drive
vehicles, the engi ne does not rev higher sud­
denly when the vehicl e begins hyd rop laning.
Fo r th is r easo n, pay a ttent ion to the road
co ndi tions regardless of your speed.
Energy management
The starting ability is optimized
The en ergy management system manages the
electrical energy distribution and optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the
engine.
When a ve hicle with a co nventional energy sys­
tem is not driven for a long time, the battery is
drained by equipment (for example the immobil­
izer) . In certa in circumstances , there cou ld may
not be eno ugh energy to start the engine .
Your vehicle is equipped w it h an intelligent ener­
gy management system for distr ibut ing electric i­
ty . T his sign ificantly improves the starting ability
and inc reases the battery life .
The energy management system Is made up of
battery diagnos is , idling cu rrent management
and dynamic energy management.
Battery diagnosis
The batte ry diagnosis determines the batte ry
charge leve l. The sensors determine the batte ry
voltage, the battery current , and the battery
t emperature . The current cha rge level and the
pe rformance of t he battery a re dete rmined based
on this .
Idling current management
The idling cu rrent management decreases the
energy used while parked. W it h the engine
sw itched off, it manages the energy d istribution
to the different electrical components . Date from
battery diagnosis is taken into account for this .

Depend ing on the ba tte ry charge leve l, electrical
equipment is switched off one item after the oth­
er, to prevent the battery from dra ining and to
retain the start ing ability.
Dynamic energy management
While driv ing, dynam ic ene rgy management dis­
tribu tes the appropriate amount o f energy to the
e lectrica l equ ipment. It control s the battery
charge level so that more ene rgy is not used then
i s be ing generated in order to maintain an opti­
mal battery charge level.

- Energy management cannot overcome the
laws of p hys ics. Note that the charge level
and length of the battery life a re limited.

What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority.
A lot of st ress is placed on the battery when dr iv ­
ing sho rt distances, in traffic, and at cold t imes
of the year. A lot of energy is used but little is
generated.
It is also critical when the engine is
not ru nning but e lectr ica l equipment is sw itched
o n. In th is case, energy is used but none is gener ­
ated.
In sit uat ions like this, e nergy ma nagement w ill
active ly regu lated the distribution of energy .
Long periods without use
If you do not drive your vehicle for several days or
weeks, e lectr ica l cons umers are grad ually scaled
back or sw itched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures the ve hicle w ill be able to start after long
per iods of time . Some conven ience functions
suc h as opening w it h the remote co ntrol key may
not be available. These conve nience f unct ions
will be ava ila ble aga in once you swi tch the igni-
tion on and st art the eng ine . .,_

Checking and F ill in g
sure you are using the correct brake f luid .
The correct type of brake fluid is also indi­
cated on the brake fluid reservoir .
- The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use of
the brakes can cause a vapor lock if the
brake fluid is left in the system too long.
This can ser iously affect the effic iency of
the brakes as well as your safety . This
could res ult in an accident.

Brake flu id will damage the paint of your vehi­
cle .
@ For the sake of the environment
Because of the problem of proper d isposa l of
brake fluid as well as the spec ia l tools re-
quired and the necessary expertise, we rec ­
ommend tha t you have the b rake fluid
changed by your author ized Audi dealer.
Battery
General information
The battery in yo ur Audi does not need any ma in­
tenance under normal operating conditions. Aud i
recommends having the electro lyte level check by
an author ized Audi dealer or author ized Audi
Service Fac ility when the re a re
high outside tem­
pe ratu res or when dr iv ing a ll day. The electroly te
leve l sho uld also be checked ea ch t ime the bat ­
t ery is charged

Have the battery checked when you br ing you r ve­
hicle in fo r an inspec tio n. It is a good idea to re­
p la ce the batte ry if i t is more than 5 ye ars old .
During certai n types of a irbag dep loyments, the
battery is disconnect ed from the vehicle electr i­
cal system fo r safety reasons

Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some veh icle functions (such as power windows)
are not ava ilable when the batte ry is disco nnect­
ed. These functions must be programmed after
the ba ttery is reconnec ted. To avoid havi ng to do
t his , on ly disconnect the b attery from the veh icle

electrica l sys tem when that is necessa ry to pe r­
form repairs.

batte ry capaci ty to dec rease as the tempe rat ur es
become lower . This is because more powe r is
needed to start the vehicle and componen ts such
as the he ad lights and the rear window defogger
are used more frequent ly.
Avoid using powe r unnecessar ily, especially in
c ity dr iv ing o r o n short trips . H ave yo ur au thor­
