the following notes about the temperature rang

Cold range
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem perature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, full accel
erating and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine has reached its operating tempera

turn on under normal driving conditions . The
LEDs higher up may turn on if the engine is under
heavy load or the outside temperature is high.
This is no cause for concern as long as the. in

A WARNING
-Never open the hood if you can see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. This increases the risk of
burns. Wait until you no longer see or hear
steam or coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment in any vehicle can
be a dangerous area . Stop the engine and al
low it to cool before working in the engine
compartment. Always follow the informa
tion found in ¢
page 198, Working in the
engine compartment.
(D Note
- In vehicles with a boost pressure indicator* ,
this indicator replaces the temperature dis
play. To promote a long engine service life,
avoiding high engine speeds, full accelera
tion and heavy engine loads during approxi
mately the first 15 minutes when the en
gine is cold is recommended . The amount of
time until the engine is warm depends on
the outside temperature . Check the engine
oil temperature* if necessary .
c:> page 30
-Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy engine
load.
- The front spoiler also helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over
heating will increase. See an authorized

Check to make sure both vehicle and trailer lights
are working properly.
Safety chains
Be sure tra iler safety cha ins are properly connect
ed from the trailer to the hitch on the vehicle.
L eave enough slack in the chains to permit turn
ing corners. When you install safety chains, make
sure they will not drag on the road when you are
driving .
The chains should cross under the trai ler tongue
to prevent it from dropping in case of separation
from the hitch .
Driving instructions
Driving with a trailer always requires extra care
and consideration .
To obta in the best poss ible handling of vehicle
and trailer, please note the following:
.,. Do not tow a loaded tra iler when your car itself
is not loaded.
.. Be especia lly careful when passing other
vehicles.
.. Observe speed limits .
.. Do not drive at the maximum permissible
speed.
.. Always apply brakes early.
.. Monitor the temperature gauge.
Weight distribution
Towing a loaded trai ler with an empty car results
in a high ly unstable distribution of weight. If this
cannot be avoided, drive at very low speeds only
to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easie r to operate and control.
This means that the tow vehicle should be loaded
to the extent possible and permissible, while
keeping the trailer as light as poss ible under the
circumstances. Whenever possible, transfer
some cargo to the luggage compartment of the
92
tow vehicle while observing tongue load require
ments and vehicle loading considerations.
Speed
The higher the speed, the more diff icult it be
comes for the driver to control the rig. Do not
drive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, weather or wind
conditions are unfavorab le -particularly when
going downh ill.
Reduce veh icle speed
immediately if the trailer
shows the slightest sign of swaying .
Do not try
to stop the swaying by accelerating.
Observe speed limits. In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing tra ile rs are lower than fo r regular
vehicles .
Always apply brakes early. When driving down
hill, shift int o a lo wer gear to use the eng ine
braking effect to slow the vehicle . Use of the
brakes alone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperature gauge¢ page 12 must
be obse rved carefully. The coolant temperature
can increase if you dr ive on long inclines in a low
gear at high engine speeds . Reduce your speed

in the coolant) can catch fire.
- Avoid short circ uits in the e lectrica l system,
especially the battery.
- When working in the engine compa rtment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched off, wh ich
increases the risk of pe rsonal injury.
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan
si on tank when the engine is warm . The
cooli ng system is under p ress ure .
- To protect yo ur face, hands, and a rms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a large cloth when o pening.
- Do not remove the engine c over under any
circumstances . T his i ncreases the r isk of
burns.
- If tests need to be per formed with t he en
gine running, there is additional danger due
to mov ing components (such as the rib bed
be lt , a lternator a nd radiator fan) a nd from
the high v olt age ignit io n sy stem.
-Never reac h into the radiato r fan . The e lec

e d :
- Ign ition cable
- Other components in the electronic h igh
