There is a malfunction with the windshield
wipers.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dea le r im medi­
ately to have the mal function cor rected .
~/0$ Defective light bulb warning
J:i -If the ind icator light turns on, a bulb has
failed. The message indicates the location of
the bulb.
IJ-if a rear fog lamp has failed, the indicator
light t urns on to indicate the location on the
vehicle.
Vehicle lights: malfunction
If the message appears, there is a malfunc­
tion in the headlights or lig ht switch.
Drive to you r authorized Aud i dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.
A WARNING
- Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
plode whi le they are being changed caus­
ing serious personal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
high-voltage section of gas discharge
(xenon) lights. Failure to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury.

If the indicator light turns on and this mes­
sage appears, there is a malfunction in the
adaptive light system . The headlights sti ll
function.
Go to an authorized dealership to have the
headlights or the control unit for the Adaptive
Light repaired.
/i.O Light/rain sensor
El Automatic headlights/automatic wipers:
system fault
If the indicator light turns on and this mes ­
sage appears, the light/rain sensor is not
funct ioning correct ly.
For safety reasons the low beams are tur ned
on permanently with the switch in
AUTO.
However, you can continue to turn the lights
on and off using the light switch. You can st ill
control all functions that are independent of
the ra in sensor through the w indshield wiper
lever .
Contact your authorized Audi dealer as soon
as possible to have the problem corrected .
; Adaptive dampers
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive dampers
II Suspension: System fault! You can con­
tinue driving
If the II symbol in the d isplay comes on,
there is a malfunction in the adaptive damp­
ers. Please go to an authorized Aud i dealer or
other qualified workshop to have the malfunc­
tion repa ired .

within 10 seconds after the afterw ipe. The af­
terw ipe funct ion is react ivated the next time
you switch the ignit ion on .
C lea ning the headlights *. The headlight wash ­
er system * operates on ly when the headlights
are on. If you move the lever to pos ition ®,
the headlights and the night vision assistant
camera* are washed in intervals .

-The ra in sensor is only des igned to assist
and support the drive r.
It remains entire­
ly the dr iver's respons ibility to monitor
o utside wea ther conditions and to man­
ually activate the wipers as soon as rain
or drizzle reduces visibility through the
w indshield.
- The w indshie ld m ust not be treated with
water -repe llent materials. They can in­
c rease glare under poor visibi lity condi­
tions such as wetness, darkness, or when
the sun is low on the horizon. I n addi­
tion, they can cause the windshield wip­
ers to chatte r.
- Properly functioning windshie ld w iper
blades are required for a clear view and

-In the case of frost, check whether the
windsh ield wiper b lades a re frozen to
t h e windshie ld. Switching on the wind­
s h ield wipers can damage the wiper
blades!
- Prior to using a car wash, the win dsh ield
wipe r system must be switched off (lever
i n position @). This helps to prevent un ­
i ntent ional sw itch ing on and damage to
the windshie ld w iper sys tem .
- Do no t use the wipe rs to cle ar a frosted
window. Using the wipers as a conven­
i ent ice sc raper will destroy t he wiper
b lades .

- The windshie ld wipers are switched off
when the ign it ion is off. Activate the
w indshield wipers after the ignition is
switched back on by moving the w ind­
shield wiper lever to any position .
- Worn or d irty windshield wiper blades
result in streaking. This ca n affect the
rai n sensor function. Check your wind­
shield wiper blades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozz les of the wind­
shield washe r system a re heated at low
tempe ratu res whe n the ignition is on.
- When stopping temporarily, e .g. at a
t raffic light, the set spe ed of the wind­
shield wipers is automatically reduced by
one speed.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the w indsh ie ld w iper blades when t hey
begin to leave st reaks. Use a soft clo th and
glass cleaner to clean the wi ndshield wipe r
blades.

General information
What affects braking efficiency?

The brakes on today's automobi les are sti ll
subject to wear, depending largely on operat­
ing conditions and driving habits
c:> A . On
vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop­
and-go city traffic or are driven hard, the brake pads should be checked by your author­
i zed Audi dealer more often than specified in
the
Warr ant y & Maint enan ce bookle t. Failure
to have your b rake pads inspected can res ult
i n red uced brake performance.
On steep slopes, you should use the brak ing
effect of the engine. This way, you prevent un­
necessa ry wea r on the brake system.
If you
must use yo ur brakes, do not ho ld the brakes
down continuously. Pump the brakes at inter ­
va ls.
Moistu re or road salt
Unde r ce rtain conditions, for example, when
driving through wate r or very heavy rain, or
even after washing your vehicle, the braking
effect can be reduced d ue to moisture (or in
freezing conditions ice) on the brake pads . A
few careful brake app lications should dry
off
the brake pads or remove any ice coatings.
When you are driving at higher speeds with
the windshield wipers on, the brake pads will
briefly touch the brake discs in regular inter­
vals so as to improve reaction t ime when brak­
ing on wet surfaces . You the driver w ill not no­
tice anything .
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehicle is driven on a salt-covered
road and the brakes are not used . Here too,
you should clean
off accumulated salt coat ing
from b rake discs and pads with a few careful
applications of the brake

There may be a tendency for dirt to build up
on the brake pads and corrosion to form on

the d iscs if the car is not driven regu larly or
only for short trips with litt le use of the
brakes.
If the brakes a re not used frequently, o r if cor­
rosion has formed on the discs, it is adv isable
to clean
off the pads and discs by braking

Low brake fluid lev el
Malfunctions can occu r in the bra ke system if
the brake fluid level is too low. The brake flu id
level is monitored elect ronica lly.
Brake booster
The brake booster works with vacuum pres­
su re which is created only whe n the engine is

Brake lining we ar s tatus
Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the open ings in the wheel. If neces­
sary, the wheel may be removed fo r thi s in­
spection ¢

_& WARNING
-You should perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of cleaning the brake system only if road conditions permit .
Other road users must not be put at risk -
you may ca use an accident!
- Before descending a steep grade, reduce
speed and sh ift transmission into a lower
gear or lower dr iving range. Do not ride
the brakes or hold the pedal down too long or too often . Th is could cause the
brakes to get hot and diminish braking
efficiency.
- Do not "ride the brakes" by rest ing your
foot on the pedal when you do not intend
to b rake. This may cause the brakes to

The engine hood is released from inside the

Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment.

To help avoid injury, before yo u check any ­
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Sw itch off the ignition .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector leve r to P (Park) .
- Always let the eng ine cool down . Hot
components w ill burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coo lant escaping from the engine
compa rtment. Wait unt il no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fu lly opening the hood.
- Keep ch ildren away from the engine com­
pa rtment.
- Never sp ill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire .
- Never touch the rad iator fan. The auxili­
ary electric fan is temperat ure controlled
and can switch on suddenly .
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the engine is still warm . The cool­
ant system is p ressu rized and hot cool­
a nt cou ld spray o ut.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by plac ing a
thick rag ove r the cap when you open the
coo lant rese rvoir.
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any circumstances. This inc reases the
ris k of burns.
- If work on the fue l system o r the elec tri -
cal system is necessary:
