Opening and closing
Central locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You have the following choices:
- Remote master key
r:!> page 33,
-Door handles with convenience key*
r:!> page 3 3,
-Lock cylinder at the dr iver's door q page 35,
or
- Power locking switch inside
q page 34.
Autom atic locking
The automatic locking feature locks all the vehi ­
cle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster
than 9 mph (15 km/h) .
The car is unlocked again once the ignition key is removed . In addition, the vehicle can be unlocked
if the opening function in the power locking sys ­
tem sw itch or at one of the door levers is actuat­
ed. The Auto Lock function can be turned on and
off in the rad io or MMI*
q page 35.
Addit ionally, in the event of a crash with a irbag
deployment the doors are automatically un­ locked to allow access to the vehicle .
Selective unlo cking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys­
tem w ill lock the doors and the rear lid. When un ­
lock ing, you can set in the radio or MMI* whether
only the d river 's door or t he entire veh icle should
be unlocked
q page 35.
Ant i-th eft ala rm warn ing sys tem
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the vehicle, acoust ic and visual
warn ing s ignals are tr iggered.
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto­ mat ically when you lock the vehicle. It is deact i­
vated when unlocking using the remote key, w ith
the mechanical key, and when you switch on the ignit ion.

The alarm also tu rns off when the alarm cycle has
expired.
Turn signals
When you u nlock the veh icle, the turn signals
flash twice, when you lock it once. If they do not
flash , one of the doors, the luggage compart­
ment lid or the hood is not locked or the ignition
is still switched on.
Unint entionall y lo cking yourself out
In the follow ing cases there safegua rds to pre­
vent you locking your remote master key in the
vehicle:
- T he veh icle does not lock w ith the power lock­
ing sw itch
q page 34 if the driver 's door is
open.
- On veh icles with convenience key*, if the most
recently used master key is in the luggage com­
partment, the rear lid is automatically unlocked
again after it is closed .
Do not lock your veh icle w ith the remote master
key or convenience key* unt il all doors and the
rear lid are closed. In this way you avoid locking
yourself out acc identally.
A WARNING
- When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you. This
w ill prevent passengers (children, for exam­
ple) from accidentally being locked in the
vehicle should they accidentally press the
power locking sw itch in the front doors .
- Do not leave ch ildren inside the vehicle un­
supervised . In an emergency it would be im ­
possible to open the doors from the outs ide
w it h out the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag deploy­
ment all locked doors w ill be automatically
unlocked to give access to the veh icle occu­
pants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should mal­
function, you can lock the driver's door us­ ing the mechanica l key

Emergency unlocking of the ignition key
In the event of malfunctions in the electrical sys­
tem, it may happen that you cannot remove the
ignition key.

If the vehicle is unlocked and no door, the rear lid
or the hood is opened w ithin 60 seconds, the ve­
h icle locks itself aga in automatically . This feature
p reven ts the vehicle from be ing accidenta lly left
un locked over a long per iod of time.

On ve hicles w ith automatic transmission, these­
lecto r lever must be in the P pos it ion, otherwise
the vehicl e cannot be locked .
Opening and clo sing
A WARNING
-Read and follow all WARNINGS c;, .&. in Gener-
al description on page 30 .
@ Tips
-In orde r to make sure the locking f unction is
work ing, you should a lways keep your eye
on the vehicle to make sure it is properly
locked.
- Do not use the remote control if you are in­
side the car, otherwise you may unintention­
ally lock the vehicle, and then you would set
off the anti-theft alarm when you try to
sta rt t he engine o r open a door. In case this
happens anyhow, pu sh th e unlock button@ .
- Use the pan ic function o nly if yo u are in a n
e m erge ncy si tuat ion.

Locking and unlocking with convenience
key
Applies to v ehicles: w ith c onve nienc e key
The doors and the rear lid can be unlocked and
locked without operating the master key .

swings out more than the vehicle rear. Main­
tain plenty of distance from an obstacle so
that yo ur o utside mirror or a corner of your
vehicle does not coll ide with any obstacles -
danger of accident!
- Remember to ma intain sufficient clearance
from the curb to avoid damaging the wheel rims .

The left or right orientation lines and surfaces
will be displayed, depending on the turn sig­
nal being used.
Adjusting the display and warning tones
App lies to vehicles: with parking system plus/parking system
plus w ith rea r view camera
The display* and warning tones are adjusted in
the radio or MMI*.

- Mu sic volum e w hile pa rking -when the park -
ing system is switched on, the volume of the
active aud io source is lowered.
The newly adjusted value is br iefly heard from
the signal generator . The settings are automati ­
cally stored and assigned to the remote cont ro l
key.

-
- Always make sure that the vo lume and fre-
quency of the warning tones is adjusted so
that you can easily hear the acoustic d is­
tance s ignal even if the radio is playing, the
air-condi tioner blowe r is on High or there is
a high level of outside noise.
- Check the settings whenever someone else
has dr iven the vehicle befo re you .
@ Tips
- The warn ing tones can also be adjusted di ­
rectly from the rear v iew camera image .
Simply press the Settings* cont ro l button.
- Changed settings are activated when park­
ing assist is switched on again .
Error messages
Applies to vehicles: with parking system plus with rear view
camera
T here is an erro r in the system if the L ED on the
PwJl. switch is b link ing and you hear a continuous
alarm for a few seconds after switching on the
parking system or when the parking system is al ­
ready act ivated. Have your authorized Audi dealer
cor rect the erro r.
Keep the sen so rs in the rear bumper clea n and
free from ice so that the acoustic park assist sys­
tem can function properly .
(D Tips
If the error is not corrected before you switch
off the ignition, when you switch on the park ­
i ng system again, the LED in the

forced out through the pressure relief valve
in the cap when the engine becomes hot.
- If, in an emergency, only water can be add­
ed, the correct ratio between water and an­
tifreeze
q page 192 must be restored as
soon as possib le.
@ For the sake of the environment
Drained coolant should not be reused . Always
dispose of used coolant while observ ing a ll
environmental regulations.
Radiator fan
The radiator fan switches on automatically by it­
self.
The radiator fan is driven by the engine via the V­
be lt. The viscous clutch regulates the speed of
the fan according to the temperature of the cool­
ant.
An auxiliary e lectr ic radiator fan * switches on and
off depending on coo lant temperature and other
veh icle operating conditions.
Afte r you switch the engine off, the a uxiliary fan
can cont inue running for up to 10 minutes -even
with the ignition off. It can even switch on again
l ater by itself

- the temperature of the engine coolant rises due
to the heat bui ld-up from the eng ine in the en­
gine compartment, or
- the engine compartment heats up because the
vehicle is parked in intense sunlight.
_& WARNING
- To reduce the r isk of personal injury never
touch the radiator fan.
- The aux iliary e lectr ic fan is temperature con­
trolled and can switch on suddenly even
when the engine is not running.
- The auxiliary radiator fan switches on auto­
matically when the engine coo lant reaches a
certain temperature and will continue to run
until the coolant temperature drops.

Brake fluid
Checking brake fluid level
The broke fluid level con be checked with a quick
glance.

Before you check anyth ing in the engine compart­
ment,

., Read the brake fluid level from the brake fluid
reservoir

brake fluid level must be between the "MIN"
and "MAX" markings.
The brake fluid reservo ir is located at the rear
part ition of the engine compartment on the left

The fluid level may drop slightly after some time
due to the automatic adjustment of the brake
pads. This is not cause for alarm.
If the brake fluid level falls
considerably below
the "MIN" mark, the brake warning/indicator
light (U.S. models:
1111 , Canad ian models: .
will come on
Q page 15 . Do not continue to oper­
ate the vehicl e. The complete brake system
shou ld be thoroughly chec ked by an autho rized
A udi dealer or qualified workshop and the cause
corrected. If the brake fluid level is too low, the
brake warning/indicator light will illuminate .

The brake fl uid reservoir is located under­
neath the cover.

Checking and Filling
-Before work is done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negative ground cable .
- Before performing any work on the electri­
cal system, switch off the engine and igni­
tion as well as any electrical equipment. The
negative cable on the battery must be dis­
connected . If you are just going to replace a
light bulb, then it is enough to switch off
the lights.
- Before disconnecting the battery, switch off
the ant i-theft alarm system! Otherwise you
will set off the alarm.
- When disconnecting the battery, first dis­
connect the negative cable and then the
positive cable.
- Before reconnecting the battery, make sure
all electrical consumers are switched off. Re­
connect the positive cable first and then the
negative cable. Never interchange the ca­
bles -this could start a fire!
- Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out bat­
tery. It could explode! If a battery has fro­
zen, then it must be replaced. A discharged
battery can freeze over at 32°F (0°C) .
- Make sure the vent hose is always attached
to the opening on the side of the battery.
- Never use batteries which are damaged.
There is the danger of an explosion! Always
replace a damaged battery.
A WARNING
California Proposition 65 Warning:
- Battery posts, terminals and related acces­
sories contain lead and lead compounds,
chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and reproductive problems.
Wash hands after handling.
(D Note
- Do not disconnect the vehicle battery when
the ignition is switched on or when tile en­
gine is running, otherwise, you will damage
electronic components in the electrical sys­
tem.
- If your vehicle is going to stand for a long
period of time without being driven, protect
the battery from "freezing", otherwise it

will be damaged and will then have to be re­
placed.
Battery charging
Starting the engine requires a well charged bat­
tery.
