Depending on the vehicle equipment level, you
may choose between the quartz clock or the GPS
controlled clock*~ in the radio or in the MMI*.
You can learn more about this in the MMI manual
or in the radio user's manual.
Odometer/trip odometer
The display of distance driven is shown in kilome­
ters "km" or in miles "mi".

- Canada models - Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can be changed in the radio or MMI* . You can learn more
about this in the MMI manual or in the radio us­
er's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of kilo ­
meters or miles that have been driven on the ve­
hicle .

The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset.
It can be used to measure
short distances. The last digit shows distances of
100 meters or 1/10 of a mile .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by press­
ing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
DEF will appear in the tripod­
ometer and will stay on. Contact your authorized
Audi dealer to have the problem corrected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on the
ignition key are scanned automatically.
If an unauthorized key was used,
SAFE is dis­
played permanently in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be operated
¢page 31.
{i) Tips
-When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odometer
and temperature are displayed for an addi­
tional
30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
!SET ! button¢ page 11 while the ignition is
switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the warn­
ing
lightliD in the instrument cluster will illumi­
nate¢
page 20. Time to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed in
¢page 234.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregu­
lar supply of fuel can cause engine misfiring
and fuel could enter into the exhaust system.
The catalytic converter could then overheat
and be damaged.

~ If the engine oil level is correct and the indica­
tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. Seek profess ional as ­
sistance.
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

out delay. Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears , the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low .
~ Pull off the road.
~ Stop the vehicle .
~T urnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 193 .
~ Continue driving only after the eng ine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out .
Instruments and indicator lights
~ Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assis­
tance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is cor rect, then the ra­
diator fan may be the cause o f the malfunction .
A WARNING
--If your vehicle should break down for me­
chanica l or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en­
gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights
¢ page 45, Emergency flashers .
-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded . Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
wo rk in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers
¢ page 187 .

lock malfunction. You cannot switch the ignition
on .

not tow your vehicle because it cannot be

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tronic power control .
The (m warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) i llum inates when yo u switch the ignition
on as a function check.
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light ill uminates
while you are dr iv ing, then the re is a malfunc­
tion in the eng ine electronics. Have the mal­
fu nction corrected as soon as possible by your
author ized A udi dealer or a qualified repair fa­
cility.
o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfu nction Indicator Lamp (M IL) is part of
the On-Board Diagno stic (OB D II) system . The
symbo l
('4 lights up whe n the ign ition is switch ­
ed on and will turn off afte r th e engine has star t­
ed an d has sett le d at a constant idle speed . This
indicates that the MIL is working proper ly.
The warning ligh t illumina tes when there is a
malfunct ion in the engine e lectronic system .
Contact your authorized A udi dealer and have the
malfunctio n corrected .
An improperly close d fu e l fi ller cap may also
cause the MIL li ght to il lum inate ¢

You can evaluate the fastest, slowest and aver­
age Lap times.

On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢.ij in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignit ion is switched on and goes out after the en­
g ine starts and the idle has stabilized. Th is ind i­
cates that the MIL is working properly.

If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or i lluminates while you are driving, a
malfunction may exist in the eng ine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged .
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelerations)
and have the condition corrected. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monitored component in your engine system has been as ­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­ ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the l ight illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed
c::;, page 185.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
c::;, fig . 17 .
Your authorized Audi dealer or qua lified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the nec- essary repair . .,,_

Warm and cold Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the a ir in the veh icle inter io r.
It
is the most effect ive when the windows and sun­
roof are closed. If there is a build-up of heat in ­
side the vehicle, ventilation can help to speed up
the cooling process.
I n all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
b lower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera­
ture.
Condensat ion from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water unde r the vehicle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filte r removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the ai r.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the
intervals specified in your Warranty & Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the a ir condit ioner can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air
pollution, the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than spec ified in your Audi Wa r­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your authorized Audi Service Adv isor for advice.
Key coded settings
The climate control settings are automat ically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use.
_&. WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can cause
accidents .
- For safe dr iv ing it is very important that all
windows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
tion .
Warm and cold
-Comp letely familiarize yourse lf with the
proper use and funct ion of the heating and
ventilation system and especially how to de­
fog and defrost the windows.
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshie ld first, using the heat­
ing and vent ilation system. The washer solu­
tion may freeze on the windsh ield and re­
duce visibility.
(D Note
- If you suspect that the air conditioner has been damaged, sw itch the system off to
avoid further damage and have it inspected
by a qualified dealership.
- Repairs to the Audi air conditioner require
special techn ical knowledge and spec ial
tools. Contact an authorized Aud i dealer for
assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
By reducing the amount of fuel you use, you
also reduce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the air.
(D Tips
- Keep the air intake slots (in front of the
w indshield) free from ice, snow and debris
in order to main tain the proper function of
the climate control system.
- T he energy management system may switch
the seat heating * or rear window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are avai lab le
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of cloth ing on
the luggage compartment cover, ensure
that the openings are not covered.

switch the engine
off when driving through
water.
- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your vehicle to dr ive
through safely.
- Avoid driving through sa lt water because it
can cause corrosion.
Warming up and cooling down
By carefully warming up and cooling down your
veh icle, you can help ensure that it is not over­
stressed unnecessar ily du ring sporty dr iv ing.
When warming up, the vehicle is driven at a max­ imum engine speed of 6000 RPM in order to ra ise
the engine oil temperature to a m inimum of
140 °F (60 °C). T he tires also only reach their full
road holding capab ility once they have wa rmed
up.
The cooling fan can continue to run in your vehi­
cle after the eng ine is switched
off. However,
d riving the vehicle to cool it dow n is part icu larly
important. During sporty d riving, the engine and
brakes , the exhaust system, and the transmission
all become extremely hot. Before you park the
vehicle, you should drive it for a few mi les/kilo ­
meters at light load in the low rpm range to al­
low it to cool down.
Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission control
system (catalytic converter) is functioning prop­ erly to ensure that your vehicle is running in on
environmentally sound manner .

The catalytic converte r is an effi cient "clean-up"
device b uilt into the exha ust system of the veh i­
cle. The cata lytic conve rter burns many o f the
po llutants in the exhaust gas before they are re­
l eased into the atmosphere.
The exclusive use of unleaded fue l is c ritically im ­
po rtant for the life of the catalytic conver ter and
proper functioning of the engine .
A WARNING
-The temperature of the exhaust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine.
- Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once they
have become hot. Th is could resu lt in burns.
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas
where the hot exha ust system may come in
contact with dry grass, brush, fuel spill or
other material which can cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or rustproof ing on or near the exhaust mani­
fold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or
heat shields. During dr iving, the substance
used for unde rcoat ing could overheat and
cau se a fire.
@ Note
- Be aware that just one tank fill ing with lead­
ed
fuel w ill al ready ser iously degrade the
performance of the catalytic converter.
- Do not exceed the correct engine oil level

-Do not drive until the fue l tank becomes

Unburned fu el could also get into the ex­
haus t sys tem a nd this could cause the cata­
lyt ic converte r to overheat.
- Do not turn
off the ignition while the vehicle
is

- Do not continue to operate your veh icle un­
der these condi tions, as otherwise f uel can
re ach the cat aly tic converter. This could re ­
s u lt in ove rheat ing of the c onve rter, requ ir­
ing its replacement .

-Methanol fuels which do not meet these re ­
quirements may cause corros ion and dam­
age to plastic and rubber components in the
fuel system.
- Do not use fuels that fail to meet the speci­ fied criteria in this chapter .
- If you are unable to determine whether or
not a particular fuel blend meets the speci­
fications, ask your service station or its fuel supplier.
- Do not use fuel for which the contents can­
not be identified.
- Fuel system damage and performance prob­ lems resulting from the use of fuels differ­
ent from those specified are not the respon­
s ibility of Audi and are not covered under
the New Vehicle or the Emission Contro l
System Warranties.
- If you experience a loss of fuel economy or
driveability and performance problems due
to the use of one of these fuel b lends, we
recommend that you sw itch to unb lended
fuel.
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufactur­
ers is carbon deposit build-up caused by the type
of gasoline you use .
A lthough gasoline grades differ from one manu­
facturer to another, they have certain things in
common. All gasoline grades contain substances
that can cause deposits to collect on vita l engine
parts, such as fuel injectors and intake valves. Al­
though most gasoline brands include additives to
keep eng ine and fuel systems clean, they are not
equally effect ive .
Audi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent Gas­
oline . For more information on TOP TIER Deter ­
gent Gasoline, please go to the official webs ite
(www .toptiergas .com).
After an extended period of using inadequate
fuels, built-up carbon deposits can rob your en­
g ine of peak performance .

Refueling
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap .
If the power lock ing system should fail, you can
still open the flap manually - for detailed instruc­
tions see
9 page 186.
You can find the fuel tank capacity of your vehicle
in 9 page234.
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap tells
you the correct fuel for your vehicle . For more in­
format ion about fuel specifications, see
9 page 183.
Your vehicle fuel tank has an on-board refuelling
vapor recovery system. This feature helps to pre­
vent fuel vapors from escap ing from the tank and
po lluting the environment while you refuel your
vehicle. In order to fi ll the tank properly while
protecting the environment , p lease follow this
r efueling procedure carefully .
_& WARNING
Under normal operating conditions, never car­
ry additional fuel containers in your car . Gas
can isters and other containers used to trans­
port fuel can be dangerous . Such containers,
full or empty, may leak and could cause a fire in a co llision .
If you must transport fuel to
use for your lawn mower, snow blower, etc .,
be ve ry careful and always observe local and
state laws regarding the use, transportation
and storage of such fue l conta iners . Make cer­
tain the container meets industry standa rds
(ANSI/ASTM F8S2 - 86).
