Opening and closing
Once the front passenger's door has been closed,
you cannot open it again from the outside. The
door can be opened from the inside by pulling
the door handle.
A WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS¢.& in Gener­
al description on page 30.

After the ignition is switched on, the power
locking system switch and the unlocking but­
ton for the rear lid~ in the door are ena­
bled.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobili zer prevents your vehicle from being
started by unauthorized persons .
Inside the key there is a computer chip . This chip
automatically activates/deactivates the electron­ ic immobilizer .
Applies to vehicles with ignition lock:
The electronic immobilizer deactivates automati­
cally when you insert the remote control key into
the ignition lock.
It activates again automatically
when you remove the remote control key from
the ignition lock.
Applies to vehicles with convenience key:
If the remote control key is located inside the ve­
hicle and you press the
! S TAR T ENGINE ST OPI
button, the electronic immobilizer deactivates
automatically . If you swi tch the ignition off and
remove the remote control key from the vehicle,
the electronic immobilizer activates again auto ­
mat ically.
A WARNING
Always take the key with you when you leave
the vehicle. The key can disarm the electronic
eng ine immobilizer and permit an unauthor­
ized person to start the engine and enable op­
eration of the vehicle systems such as power
window or power sunroof leading to serious personal injury.

- Th e vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device such as a key
for another vehicle or a transponder is locat­ ed on the key ring.

-After closing the rear lid, a lways pull up on
it to make sure that it is properly closed.
Otherwise it could open suddenly when the
vehicle is mov ing .
- To he lp prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, a lways keep
the rear lid closed wh ile driving. Never
transport objects larger than those wh ich fit
completely into the luggage a rea, because
then the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­
cially w ith the rear lid left open. A child
cou ld craw l into the car through the luggage
compartment and pull the lid sh ut, becom­
ing t rapped a nd unable to get ou t. To red uce
t he risk of personal inj ury, neve r let children
play in or around your vehicle. Always keep
the rear lid as well as the vehicle doors
closed when not in use.
- Always ensure that no one is w it hi n range of
tile rear lid when it is moving , in particular
close to the hinges - fingers or hands can be
pinched.

When the vehicle is locked, the rear lid can be
opened separately by pressing the button

on the master key. When yo u close the rear lid
aga in , it locks automatica lly .
Trunk escape handle
In cas e of an emerg ency, th e luggag e compart­
men t lid can be opened f rom the inside using the
trunk escape handle .

The driver can operate the window regulator for
the driver's door with the left switch and the win­
dow regulator for the passenger's door with the
right switch .

You can activate various systems such as garage
doors, security systems and home lighting from
inside your vehicle using the garage door opener
(Homelink). There are three buttons for this in
the vehicle headliner that can be in used in place
of up to three hand-held transmitters.
To operate systems using the garage door open­
er, the three buttons in the roof head liner must
be programmed first.
A WARNING
Make sure no people or objects are in the im­
mediate v icin ity of the equipment when using
or programming the garage door opener. Peo­
ple can be injured and objects can be dam­
aged if they are caught in the equipment.

tor with the system. Refer to the manufac­

Programming the button: Part 1 with the
controls
1. Switch the ign ition on.
2. Press and ho ld both outer buttons in the roof
headliner
c> page 40, fig. 34 until the LED @
turns off completely (after about 20 sec­ onds). This procedure clears the standard co­
des that were set at the factory and does
not
need to be repeated again to program the
other buttons .
3. Briefly press the button on the roof headliner
that you would like to program.
4. Wait until the LED @ begins to blink quickly.
Programming mode is active for 5 minutes .
5. Move in front of yo ur vehicle whi le holding
the original remote control for the system
that would like to program to a button in the roof headliner.

6. Hold the remote control up to the radiator
grille on your vehicle¢

7. Press and ho ld the remote control until the
turn signals on your veh icle blink . This may
take up to 30 seconds .

If the emergency flashers blink three times,
the programming was successful. If the
emergency flashers only blink one t ime, the
5 minute time limit for the programming has
ended or the programming was not success­
ful. Repeat the prog ramming from the third
step, or try changing the distance to the radi- ator grille . .,..

fu l, the system may use a rolling code in­
stead of a fixed code.

After programm ing, the system should detect
the signal and beg in moving when the button in
the roof headliner is pressed . Now you may pro ­
gram the other buttons as needed.

- The rolling code can be programmed more
quickly and mo re easily with the help of a
second person.

ing code, referring to the user guide for the

adaptive light*
When switched on, adap tive ligh t ad apts to
c u rves in the road depend ing on the vehicle
speed and the steering ang le . This provides bet­
te r li ght ing t hrough the curve. The system oper­
ates at speeds between approximately 6 mph
(10 km/h) and 68 mph (110 km/h).
Static cornering light* (vehicles with adaptive
light) -the corne ring light switches on at speeds
u p to approximate ly 25 mph (40 km/h) when a
certain steering wheel angle is reached or when a
tu rn s ignal is activated. The a rea to the side of
the ve hicle is illuminated bet ter when turning .
The adaptive light and the corner ing light only
funct ion when the switc h is in t he AUTO position
(automat ic head lights*) .

--Daytime r unning lights and automatic head·
lights * are only in tended to assis t the driver .
Th ey do not relieve the d river of his respon­
s ibi lity t o check the he ad lig hts and to tur n
t hem on m anually according to the cur ren t
