Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions¢ &.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights .
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The messages disappear again after a short time.
To display a message again, press the
I SE TI but­
ton ¢
page 11. If several malfunctions occur,
each of the indicator/warning lamps will be dis­
p layed in succession for about two seconds at a
time.
Some indicators lights in the display can turn on
in several colors.
8_ WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle information may resu lt in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the emer­
gency flasher¢

- The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.

Some indicator lights turn on briefly to check the
function of that system when you switch the igni­
tion on . These systems are marked with a./ in
the following tables .
If one of these indicator
lights does not turn on, there is a malfunction in

tromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator light . (USA models)/ . (Cana­
da models) turns on, the parking brake was set.
The warning/indicator light will go o ut when the
parking brake is re leased.

appears, there is a malfunct io n in the gene rator

te ry is d ischarging, tur n off all unnecessary elec­
t rical eq uipme nt such as th e radio. Se ek prof es­

~ Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair. Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se ­
vere damage to the engine .
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
If the indic ator li ght turns on and the message
appe ars, the o il pressure is too low.

tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. Seek profess ional as ­
sistance.
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears , the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low .
~ Pull off the road.
~ Stop the vehicle .
~T urnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 193 .
~ Continue driving only after the eng ine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out .

~ Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assis­
tance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is cor rect, then the ra­
diator fan may be the cause o f the malfunction .
A WARNING
--If your vehicle should break down for me­
chanica l or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en­
gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights
¢ page 45, Emergency flashers .
-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded . Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
wo rk in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers

cooling system -you could damage your en­

Introduction
The Driver information display inside the instru­
ment cluster provides you, the driver, with im­
portant information.

Cent er dis play
With the ignition on, the display in the Driver In­
formation System shows the following informa­
tion :
- CD* inserted or Radio * station set
- Outs ide temperature* : At temperatures below
41 °F (+S °C), a snowflake symbol appears in
front of the temperature display¢&. .
- Wa rning if one of the doors, front lid o r engine
compartment lid is not closed.

Auto Che ck Control
Some functions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operati ng status when you
switch the ign ition on and whi le you a re driving.
Malfunctions or required service procedures are
s ignaled audib ly and ind icated by red and yellow
illuminated symbols and rem inders in the dis­
play.
A WARNING
-
- Never rely exclusively on the o utside tem­
perature display to determine if a road sur­
face is icy or not. Keep in mind that road sur­
faces, especially bridges and overpasses, could be ice covered and slippery even at an
outs ide temperature above 41 °F (+5 °C).
- Always remember, even i f the "snowflake"
symbo l (ice warning) does not appea r in the
display, black ice could be on the road.
- Always reduce your speed and drive with
specia l care in cold weather cond itions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces
increases.
(D Tips
If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are driv­
i ng at a very low speed, the temperature
shown in the disp lay m ight be slightly higher
than the act ual outs ide temperatu re. This is
caused by the heat being radiated from the
engine.

Driving
Sw itching the ignition on /off
If you would like to switch the ignition o n wit h­
out starting the engine, fo llow these steps:
• Inse rt the key into the ignition lock.
• Press the key brief ly
wi thout p ress ing the b rake
pedal.
• To sw itch the ignition off , press the key again.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l loads
are sw itched off temporar ily.
You ca n only remove the key with the ignition
sw itched off .
If the engine should not start immedia tely , the
starti ng process is automatically stopped after a
short time . Repeat sta rting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces - dange r of asp hyxiation.
- Never remove the ignition key from the ign i­
t ion loo k while the vehicle is moving . Other­
wise, the steering lock cou ld sudden ly en­
gage and you would not be able to steer the
vehicle.
- Always ta ke the key with yo u wheneve r you
leave your vehi cle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical eq uipment
s uch as the power windows cou ld be operat­
ed . T his can lead to ser ious injury.
- Never leave ch ildren or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing peop le from escap ing
from the vehicle on their own in the event of an emergency . Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­ posed to very high o r very low tempe ra­
t ur es.

Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and heavy
eng ine loads until the eng ine has reached op­
erati ng temperature - otherwise you risk en­
gine dam age.

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key

You can use the emergen cy key as an igni tion key
in an emergency.

Switching the ignition on /off

Steering lock
The steer ing lo cks w hen yo u tur n the eng ine off

the d river's doo r. The loc ked steering helps pre­
vent ve hicle theft .
Emergency off
If necessary, the e ngine can be switched off with
the se lec to r lever in the R or D/S posi tions. The
engine s tops if you press a nd ho ld the
I START ENGI NE STOP I button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/ h) and press the brake peda l.
_& WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steer ing is not guaranteed. You must use
more force to turn or b rake if necessary. Be­
caus e you cannot stee r and brake as you
usually wo uld, this cou ld lead to crashes
a nd se rio us in juries.

The location of the coolant expansion tank can be
seen in the engine compartment illustration

To obtain an accurate reading , the engine must
be switched off.
The expansion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, the warning
light in the Auto-Check System¢
page 17 will
blink until you add coolant and the level has been
restored to normal. Even though there is an elec­
tric coolant level sensor, we still recommend you
check the coolant level from time to time.
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cooling
system should be inspected immediately by your
authorized Audi dealer. It is not enough merely
to add coolant.
In a
sealed system, losses can occur only if the
boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as a re­
sult of overheating.
Adding coolant
Replacement engine coolant must conform to ex­
act specifications ¢
page 192, Coolant.
We recommend using only coolant additive Gl2+
+ , G l3
or in an emergency Gl2+ . Do not use a
different additive . In an emergency use plain wa­
ter until you can get the correct additive and can

restore the correct ratio. This should be done as
soon as possible.
If you have lost a considerable amount of cool­
ant, then you should add cold antifreeze and cold
water only when the engine is cold.
Always use
new engine coolant when refilling.
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX" mark. Excess
coolant will be forced out through the pressure
relief valve in the cap when the engine becomes
hot.
,&_ WARNING
- The cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of scalding
from hot coolant by following these steps.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
down .
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid and steam by covering the
cap with a large, thick rag .
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in a
counter-clockwise direction while applying
light, downward pressure on the top of
the cap .
- To avoid being burned, do not spill anti ­
freeze or coolant on the exhaust system or
hot engine parts. Under certain condi­
tions, the ethylene glycol in engine cool­
ant can catch fire.
- Antifreeze is poisonous. Always store anti­
freeze in its original container and well out
of the reach of children.
- If you drain the coolant, it must be caught
and safely stored in a proper container
clearly marked "poison".
(D Note
- Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant
to your vehicle's engine coolant. Adding ra­
diator repair fluid may adversely affect the
function and performance of your cooling
system and could result in damage not cov­
ered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Coolant pollutes the environment and could

Tires and vehicle load limits
There are limits to the amount of
load or weight that any vehicle
and any tire can carry. A vehicle
that is overloaded will not handle
well and is more difficult to stop. Overloading can not only lead to
loss of vehicle control, but can al­
so damage important parts of the
vehicle and can lead to sudden
tire failure, including a blowout and sudden deflation that can
cause the vehicle to crash .
Your safety and that of your pas­ sengers also depends on making
sure that load limits are not ex­
ceeded. Vehicle load includes ev-

erybody and everything in and on
the vehicle. These load limits are
technically referred to as the vehi­ cle's
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
("GVWR").
The "GVWR" includes the weight of the basic vehicle , all factory in­
stalled accessories, a full tank of
fuel, oil, coolant and other fluids plus maximum load . The maxi ­
mum load includes the number of
passengers that the vehicle is in­
tended to carry ("seating capaci ­
ty") with an assumed weight of
150 lbs. (68 kg) for each passen­
ger at a designated seating posi­
tion and the total weight of any luggage in the vehicle . If you tow
a trailer, the weight of the trailer hitch and the tongue weight of
the loaded trailer must be includ- ed as part of the vehicle load. ..,.
