The parking system may be used for parking
or maneuvering.
Depending on your vehicle's equipment, vari­
ous parking aids will help you when park ing
and maneuvering.
The
parking system plus assists you when
parking by audibly and visually indicat ing ob­
jects detected
in front of and behind the vehi­
cle

The parking system plus with rear view cam­
era
shows the area behind the vehicle in the
d isplay. This display assists you when you are
reverse or parallel parking<=>
page 106. In ad­
dition, you are assisted by the functions from
the parking system plus~
page 105.

Make sure the sensors are not covered by
st ickers, deposits or any other obstruc­
tions as it may impair the
sensor function.

Parking system plus
Description
Applies to vehicles: with parking system plus
Audi parking system plus provides audio and
visual signals when parking.
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers. If these detect an obstacle, visual
and audible s ignals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx­
imately:

front 3 ft (0.90 m)
center
4 ft (1.20 m)
side 2 ft (0 .60 m)
rear
center S.2 ft (1.60 m)
Park assist 105
The
closer you get to the obstacle, the shorter
the interva l between the audible signals. A
continuous tone sounds when the obstacle is less than approximately 1
ft (0.30 m) away.
Do not continue driving farther!
If the distance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the d istance signa l chime is
gradually reduced after about
4 seconds (does
not affect the continuous signal tone).
Switching on/off

Using the red segments, you can est ima te the
d istance to an object in front of or behind the
vehicle

er to the obstacle, the segments move closer
to the vehicle. At the latest the collision area
has been reached when the next to last seg­
ment is displayed. Do not continue driving far­
ther forward or in reverse

A WARNING
-The parking system cannot rep lace the
dr iver's attention. The driver is always re­
sponsible for safety d uring parking and
f or all o ther maneuvers.
- Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
wh ich peop le and objec ts cannot be de­
tected . Be especially cautious of small
children and animals .
- Always keep your eyes on the veh icle's
surroundings, using the rear view mirro r
as well.

Low obstacles al ready signa led by a warn­
ing can disappear from the system's detec­
tion range as they are approached and will
not continue to be signa led . Objects such
as barrier chains, trailer draw bars, thin
pa inted vertical poles or fences may not be
detected by the system, posing risk of
damage.

You can choose between two modes to assist
you w ith parking. For example, you can use
"parking model" when parking in a parking
space or garage

The rear acoustic park ass ist system is inte­
grated in the rear of the vehicle and the rear
view camera is integrated in the rear lid

A WARNING
--The rear view camera has blind spots, in
which ob jects canno t be detec ted. Be es­
pec ia lly careful to che ck for small chil ­
dren and anima ls before backing up .
Sma ll children and animals will not a l­

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers. If these detect an obstacle, audible
and visual signals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx­
i mately :

Distance warning when reversing starts when
an obstacle is detected in the range of the
parking assist system. As the distance de­
creases, the time interva l between the audib le
tones becomes shorter.
When the distance is less than 1 ft (0 .30 m),
the tone becomes continuous. At this point
you should stop backing up.
If the d istance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the distance signal chime is
gradually reduced after about 4 seconds (does
Park assist 107
not affect the continuous signal tone). Ap­
proaching another obstacle will cause the dis­
tance signal to sound again at the norma l vo l­
ume .
Rear view camera coverage area
The MMI display shows the area covered by
the rear view camera

that are not in the area covered @are not
shown on the MMI display .
We recommend that you practice parking with
the rear view camera in a traffic-free location
or parking lot to become familiar with the sys­
tem, the orientation lines, and their function.
When doing this, there should be good light
and weather cond itions.
In the MMI display, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
-you are driving in reverse gear from a leve l
surface onto an incline, or a downward
slope,
-you are driving in reverse gear toward pro­
trud ing ob jects,
- the vehicle is car ry in g too much load in the
rear.
The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces diminishes if:
- the rear view camera does not provide a reli­
able image, for example, in poor visibility
conditions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not vis ible due to
sun glare and reflection.
Caring for the rear view camera lens
The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate bracket. For the parking assist to
operate, the lens
c:> fig . 126 must be kept
clean:
- Dampen the lens with a household alcohol­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth

- Remove snow with a hand brush and ice
preferably with a de-ic ing spray

- The parking aid cannot replace the driv­
er's attention . The driver a lone is respon­

- Always keep your eyes on the veh icle's
surround ings, using the rear view mirro r

from traffic by the rear view camera pic­
tu res.
- If the pos it io n and the installat ion angle
of the came ra has changed, fo r example,
afte r a rea r end collision, do not continue

The vehicle front swings out more than

tance from an obstacle so that your out­

ance from the curb to avoid damaging

Error messages

There is an error in the system if the LED on
the
p, ,; A switch is blinki ng and you hear a con ­
tinuous alarm fo r a few seconds after switch­
ing on the park ing system or when the park­
ing system is already activated . Have yo ur au­
t h orized Aud i dea le r cor re ct the e rror.
Keep th e senso rs in the rea r bumpe r clean and
free from ice so that the acoust ic par k assist
system can fu nction properly.
@ Tips
If the error is not corrected before you
switc h off the ig nitio n, when you sw itch on
the p arking system again, the LED in the
P" JA switch will b link.

Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenger seat in your vehicle has a
l ot of very important parts of the Advanced
A irbag System in it. These parts include the
weight-sens ing mat , sensors, w iring, brack­
ets, and more. The function of the sys tem in
the front passenger seat is checked by the
e lectronic control unit when the ignition is on .
T he control unit mon itors the Advanced Air ­
bag System and turns the airbag indicator
light on when a malfunction in the system
components is detected . The function of the
a irbag ind icator light is described in greater
deta il be low . Because the front passenge r
seat conta ins important parts of the Ad­
v a nce d Airbag System, you m ust ta ke care to
prevent it from be ing dam aged. Damage to
the seat may prevent the Advanced Airbag for
the front passenger seat from doing its job in
a crash .
The front Advanced Airbag System
consis ts o f the following :
-Crash sensors in the front of the veh icle that
measure veh icle acceleration/dece leration
to provide information to the Advanced Air­
bag System about the severity of the crash .
- An electronic control unit, with integrated crash sensors for front and side impacts.
The contro l unit "decides" whether to fire
the front airbags based on the information
received from the crash senso rs. The co ntro l
u nit a lso "dec ides " whet he r the safety be lt
pre tensione rs should be a ctivated.
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and
control valve for the d river inside the s teer­
i ng w hee l hub . -
An Advanced A irbag w ith gas generator and
cont ro l valve inside the instrument pane l for
the front passenger .
- A we ight -sensing mat under t he up ho lstery
padding of the front passenger seat cushion
that measures the total weight on the seat.
The informat io n registered is sent continu­
ously to the electronic control unit to regu­
late deployment of the front Advanced Air­
bag on the passenger side .
- An airbag monitoring system and indicator
light in the instr ument cluster

- A sensor in each front seat registers the dis­
tance betwee n the respective seat a nd the
s teer ing whee l o r i nstrument panel. The in­
formation registered is sent cont inuous ly to
t he ele ct ro nic c ontro l uni t to regula te de­
p loyment o f the front Adv anced A irbags .
- The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on and stays on in the cen ter o f the instr u­
ment panel

you when the fron t Advanced Airbag on the
passenger side has been tu rned off .
- A senso r below the safety be lt latch for the
front seat passenger to meas ure t he tension

front passenger seat should be turned off or no t

vent the Advanced Airbag System from

-Repairs to the front passenger seat must
be performed by qualified and properly
trained workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or
driver seat from the vehicle.
- Never remove the upholstery from the
front passenger seat.
- Never disassemble or remove parts from
the seat or disconnect wires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets
or place them on the seat. If the weight­
sensing mat in the passenger seat is
punctured it cannot work properly.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry
objects on the passenger seat. Such
items can increase the weight registered
by the weight-sensing mat and send the
wrong information to the airbag control
unit.
- Never store items under the front pas­
senger seat. Parts of the Advanced Air­ bag System under the passenger seat
could be damaged, preventing them and
the airbag system from working proper­
ly.
- Never place seat covers or replacement
upholstery that have not been specifical­
ly approved by Audi on the front seats.
- Seat covers can prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from recognizing child re­
straints or occupants on the front pas­
senger seat and prevent the side airbag
in the seat backrest from deploying prop­
erly.
- Never use cushions, pillows, blankets or
similar items on the front passenger
seat. The additional padding will prevent
the weight-sensing mat in the seat from
accurately registering the child restraint
or person on the seat and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from function­
ing properly.
- If you must use a child restraint on the
front passenger seat and the child re­
straint manufacturer's instructions re­
quire the use of a towel, foam cushion or
something else to properly position the
child restraint, make certain that the

on and stays on whenever the child re­
straint is installed on the front passen­
ger seat.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immedi­
ately install child restraint in a rear seat­
ing position and have the airbag system
inspected by your authorized Audi dealer.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the
side airbags supplement the protection of­
fered by the front three-point safety belts
with pretensioners and load limiters and the
adjustable head restraints to help reduce the
risk of injury in a wide range of accident and
crash situations. Be sure to read the impor­
tant information about safety and heed the
WARNINGS in this chapter.
Deployment of the Adva need Airbag System
and the activation of the safety belt preten­ sioners depend on the deceleration measured
by the crash sensors and registered by the
electronic control unit. Crash severity depends
on speed and deceleration as well as the mass
and stiffness of the vehicle or object involved
in the crash.
On the passenger side, regardless of safety
belt use, the airbag will be turned off if the
weight on the passenger seat is less than the
amount programmed in the electronic control
un it. The front airbag on the passenger side
will also be turned off if one of the child safe­
ty seats that has been certified under Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 has been
recogni zed on the seat . The
