Opening and closing
Master key with remote control
The remote control allows you to lock or unlock
the vehicle electronically .
The transmitter and battery are located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is locat­
ed inside the vehicle . The max imum effective
range depends on several things . Remember, if
the battery is weak, the effective range dec reas­
es .
If you need to replace the remote control , or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see your author ized Audi dealer. Only then can you use the
key again .
0) Tips
-If the ignition is sw itched on, the remote
control system is deact ivated.
- The remote control system can be affected
by other systems operating in the same fre­
quency range close to the vehicle, such as
mobile te lephones, television broadcasting
stations, etc.

Master key battery replacement
Each master key contains a battery housed un­
der the cover.

• Remove the cover (arrow) .
• Remove the dead battery from the cover .

• Insta ll the new battery . Please make certain
that the" +" sign on the battery faces down in
the cover . Correct polarity is shown on the cov­
er.
• Place the cover with the new battery on the key
base and press both parts together .
@ For the sake of the environment
D ispose of dead batteries properly so as not
to pollute the environment.
@ Tips
The replacement battery must be the same
specification as the original.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer helps to prevent unauthorized
use of your vehicle.
A comp uter chip inside your key automatical ly
deactivates the electronic immobilizer when you
insert the key in the ignition lock. When you re­
move the key from the ignition lock, the electron­
ic immobilizer is automatically activated once
again .
A WARNING
Always take the key with you when you leave
the vehicle. The key can disarm the electronic
engine immobilizer and perm it an unauthor­
ized person to start the engine and enab le op­
e rat ion of t he vehicle systems such as power
window leading to serious personal injury.
{D Tips
- The veh icle cannot be started if an una u­
thorized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device such as a key
for another veh icle or a transponder is locat­
ed on the key ring.

- The dr iver's door can be locked and un­
l ocked with the key if the power locking sys­
tem fails. The passenger 's door can be
l ocked manually

- In the event of a crash with airbag deploy­
ment all loc ked doors will be automatically
unlocked to give access to the vehicle occu­
pants from the outs ide .
- The anti-t heft alarm system cannot be acti­
vated if the power locking system is not ac­
tivated .
- You are well advised not to keep valuables
i nside an unattended vehicle, v is ible or not.

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condition of
the vehicle, the driver as well as the driver's abili­
ty to concentrate on the road without being dis­
tracted.
The driver is respons ible for the safety of the ve­
h icle and all of its occupants . If your ability to
d rive is impaired, safety r isks for everybody in the
ve hicle increase and you also become a hazard to
everyone else on the road ¢A -Therefore:
• Do not let yourself be distracted by passengers
or by us ing a cell ular te lephone.
• NEV ER dr ive when your dr iv ing ability is im­
paired (by medicat ions, alcohol, dr ugs, e tc.).
• Observe all traffic laws, ru les of the road and
speed limits and plain common sense.
• ALWAYS ad just your speed to road, traffic and
weather conditions.
• Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not drive
for more than two hours at a stretch .
• Do NOT drive when you are t ired, under pres­
sure or when you are stressed .
A WARNING
Impaired driving safety increases the risk of
ser ious personal in ju ry and death whenever a
vehicle is being used.

The proper driver seating position is important
for safe, relaxed driving.

Driving S afely
For yo ur own sa fety and to reduce the risk of in­
jury in the event of an accident, we recommend
that you adjust the dr iver's seat to the following
pos ition:
• Adjust the steering wheel so that there is a dis ­
tance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between the
steer ing whee l and your breast bone
¢ fig. 100 .
• Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easily
push the pedals all the way to the floor while
keeping your knee(s) slightly bent<=>
A .
• Grasp the top of the steer ing whee l with your
elbow(s) slightly bent .
• Adjust the head rest rain t so the upper edge is
as even as possib le w it h t he top of yo ur head.
If
that is no t possib le, try to ad just the head re­
straint so that it is as close to this pos ition as
possible .
• Adjust the steering wheel so that the steering
wheel and airbag cover points at your chest and
not at your face .
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is in
an upr ight position so that you r bac k comes in
full contact with it when you dr ive.
• Fas ten and wear safe ty belts corre ct ly
<=>page 95.
• Always keep both feet in the footwe ll so that
you are in control of the vehicle at all times.

A WARNING
-Drivers who are unbelted, o ut of position or
too close to the airbag can be seriously in­
jured by an airbag as it dep loys. To help re­
duce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adj ust the driver 's seat and the
steer ing whee l so that there are at least
10 i nches (25 cm) between your breastbo ne
and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver 's seat and the
steer ing whee l so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and the
lowe r part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on t he out­
side of the steer ing wheel r im with yo ur
hands at the 9 o 'clock and 3 o'clock

When an airbag deploys, fine dust is released.
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the
veh icle. This dust is made up mostly of a powder
used to lubricate the airbags as they deploy . It
could irr itate skin.
It is important to remember that while the sup­
p lemental a irbag system is designed to reduce
the likelihood of serious injuries, other injur ies,
for example swel ling, bruising and minor abra­
sions , can also happen when a irbags inflate . Air­
bags do not protect the arms or the lower parts
of the body . Front airbags only supp lement the
three point safety belts in some frontal col lisions
in which the ve hicle deceleration is high eno ugh
to deploy the airbags .
Front airbags will not d eploy:
- i f the ignit ion is switched off when a crash oc-
curs,
- in s ide collisions,
- in rear-end collisions,
- in ro llovers,
- when the crash deceleration measured by the
airbag system is less than the minimum thresh­
o ld needed for airbag deployment as registered
by the electronic control un it.
The front pa ssenger airbag will a lso not
deplo y:
- when the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- when the we ight on the front passenger seat as
sensed by the Advanced Airbag System indi­
cates that the front airbag on the passenger
s ide has to be turned
off by the electronic con­
trol unit (the
PA SS ENGER AIR BAG OFF light
comes on and stays on) .
A WARNING
Sitting in the wrong position can increase the
r is k of se rious injury in crashes .
- To reduce the r isk of injury when the airbags
inflate, the d river and passengers must al­
ways s it in an upr ight position, must not
lean against or place any part of their body
too close to the area where the airbags are
located .

- Occupants who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be serio usly
injured by an airbag as it unfolds with great
force in the blink of an eye

A WARNING
A child in a rearward-fac ing ch ild safety seat
i nstalled on the front passenge r seat w ill be
seriously inju red and can be killed if the front
a ir bag inflates -even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- The inflating airbag will h it the c hild safety
seat o r infant ca rr ier with great force and
will sm ash the child s afety seat and child
aga inst the backrest, center arm rest, door
or roof.
- Never install a rearward facing child safety
seat on the front passenger seat unless the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF li ght comes on
and stays on.
If the PASSENG ER AIR BAG
OFF
li ght does not come on and stay on, the
inflating a irbag will hit the child safety seat
or infant carrier with great force and will
smash the child safety seat and child
aga inst th e backrest, door or roof. Have the
ai rbag system inspected immediately by
your author ized A udi dealer.
A WARNING
Obje cts between you and the airbag will in­
crease the risk of in jury in a crash by inte rfe r­
ing with the way the airbag unfolds or by be­
ing p ushed into you as the airbag inflates .
- Never hold things in yo ur hands or on your
lap when the vehicle is in use .
- Never transpo rt items on or in the area of
the front passenger seat. Objects could
move into the area of the front a irbags dur­
ing brak ing or other sudden maneuver and
become dangerous project iles that can
cause serious persona l injury if the a irbags
i n flate.
- Never p lace or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cup holders, telephone
b rackets, large , heavy o r bulky objects) on
the doors, over or nea r the a rea marked

vehicle can damage a part of an airbag system
and prevent that system from working properly
in a co llision.
There are some important things you have to know to make sure that the effectiveness of the
system wi ll not be impaired and that discarded
components do not cause injury or pollute the
environment.
A WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal injury
and death by prevent ing an a irbag from de­
ploying when needed or dep loying an airbag
unexpectedly:
- Never cover, obstruct, o r change the steer­
ing wheel horn pad or a irbag cover or the in­
strument panel or mod ify them in any way.
- Never attach any objects such as cup holders
or te lephone moun tings to the su rfaces cov­
er ing the airbag units.
- F or cleaning the ho rn pad or instrument
pane l, use only a soft, d ry cloth or one mois­
tened with plain water. Solvents or cleaners
cou ld damage the a irbag cover or change
the stiffness o r strength of the mater ial so
that the airbag cannot dep loy and protect
properly.
- Never repa ir, adjust, or change any parts of
the airbag system.
- All wo rk on the stee ring wheel, inst rument
pane l, front seats or elect rical system (in­
cluding the installation of aud io equipment,
cellu lar telep hones and CB radios, etc.)
must be performed by a qualified technician
who has the train ing and special eq uipment
necessary.
- For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see you r au­
tho rized Aud i dea le r o r qualified workshop.
- Never mod ify the front bumper or parts of
the vehicle body .
- Always make sure that the side airbag can
inflate without inte rfe rence:
- N ever install seat covers or replacement
up ho lstery over the front seatbacks that

have not been specif ically approved by
Audi.
- Never use additional seat c ushions that
cover the areas where the side a irbags in­
flate.
- Damage to the orig inal seat cove rs or to
the seam in the area of the side airbag
module must a lways be repaired immedi­
ate ly by an authorized Aud i dealer .
- The airbag system can be activated only
once. After an airbag has inflated, it must
be rep laced by an authorized A udi dealer or
qualified technic ian who has the technical
info rmation, t raining and specia l equipment
necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an airbag has been deployed, it m ust be replaced w ith new repla cemen t
p ar ts des igned and app roved especially for
your Aud i model version . Replacement of
comp lete airbag systems or airbag compo­
nents must be perfo rmed by qualified wor k­
shops only. Make sure that any airbag serv­
ice action is entered in your Audi Warranty
&
Maintenance book let under AIRBAG RE­
PLACEMENT RECORD.
- For safety reasons in severe accidents, the
alternator and starte r are separated from
the vehicle batte ry w ith a pyrotechnic circuit
interrupter.
- Work on the pyrotechnic circuit interrupt­
er must on ly be performed by a qua lified
dealer - risk of an acc ident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interr upter is
scrapped, all applicable safety precautions
must be followed.
@ For the sake of the environment
Undeployed airbag modules and pretension ­
ers might be classified as Perchlorate Material
-specia l hand ling may apply, see
www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlo­ rate. When the vehicle or parts of the re­
stra int system including airbag modules and
safety belts with pretensioners are scrapped,
a ll applicable laws and regulations must be ..,_

protection, the side airbag must inflate within a
fraction of a second at very high speed and with
great force . T he supplemental side airbag cou ld
injure you if your seating position is not proper or
upright or if items are located in the area where
the supplemental side airbag expands. This ap­ plies especially to ch ildren

tween the occupant and the door panel on the
side of the vehi cle that is struck in certain s ide
collision

A lthough they are not a soft pi llow, they can
"cushion" the impact and in th is way they can
he lp to reduce the r isk of inj ury to the upper part
of the body.
A fine dust may develop when the airbag deploys .
This is normal and does not mean there is a fire
in the vehicle .
Important safety instructions on the side
airbag system
Airbags are only supplemental restraints . Always
properly wear safety belts and ride in a proper
seating position .
There is a lot that you and your passenger must
know and act accordingly to help the safety belts
and a irbags do the ir job to provide supplementa l
protection.
A WARNING
An inflating side airbag can cause ser ious or
fatal injury. Improperly wearing safety belts and improper seating positions increase the
r isk of serious personal injury and death
whenever a vehicle is being used .
- In order to reduce the risk of injury when the supplemental s ide airbag inflates:
- Always sit in an upright position and never lean against the area where the supple­
mental side airbag is located.
- Never let a chi ld or anyone else rest their
head against the side trim panel in the
area where the supplementa l side airbag
inflates .
- Always make sure that safety belts are
worn correct ly,

- Do not let anyone sitting in the front seat
put their hand or any other parts of their
body out of the window.
- Always make sure that the s ide a irbag can
inflate w ithout interference .
- Never install seat covers or rep lacement
upholste ry over the front seatbacks that

terfer ing with the way the airbag unfolds or

flates.
- Never place or attach a ccessor ies or other
obje cts (such as cup holders, telephone
brackets, or even large, bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked "AIRBAG" on the seat backrests.
- Such objects and accessories can become dangerous projectiles and cause injury
when the supplementa l side airbag de­
ploys .
- Never carry any objects or pets in the de­
ployment space between them and the
airbags or allow children or other passen­
gers to travel in this posit ion.
- Always prevent the side airbags from being
damaged by heavy objects knocking against
or hitting the sides of the seatbacks .
- The a irbag system can only be triggered
once . If the airbag has been triggered, the
system must be replaced by an authorized
Aud i deale rship.
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc .) to the
or iginal seat covers or to the seam in the
area of the s ide a irbag mod ule must always
be repaired immediately by an authorized
Aud i dea le r.

Never drive yo ur vehicle unti l the fuel tank is
completely dry . The irregular supp ly of fuel
can cause misfir ing. Gasoline co uld enter into
the exhaust system and damage the catalyt ic
converter .

When adding fuel, the ignition and any cellular
phones in the vehicle must be sw itched
off .

T o avoid fuel spill ing o r evapora ting from the fuel
tank always close fue l filler cap properly and
complete ly . An improper ly closed f uel filler cap
may also cause the MIL lamp ¢
page 26 to come
on.
A WARNING
--Improper refue ling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns.
- Fue l is highly flammable and can cause se­
vere burns and other injur ies.
- Fa ilure to shut the engine off while re fuel­
ing and/or to insert the pump nozzle fully
into the fue l filler neck cou ld cause fuel to
spray out of filler neck or to overflow. Fue l
sp ray an d overflowing fue l can ca use a fire.
- Never use a ce llular telepho ne while refuel­
ing . T he elec tromagnetic radiation can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapo rs and
cau se a fire .
- Never get back into yo ur vehicle wh ile refu­
e ling . If in except iona l circumst ances you
m ust get ba ck in yo ur vehicle whi le refuel­
i n g, make cert ain that yo u close the doo r
a nd tou ch me tal to disch arge st atic electric­
ity before touch ing the filler nozzle aga in.
Static elect ricity ca n cause s parks that can
ignite fue l vapors re leased d uring refueling.
- Never smoke o r have an open f lame any­
where in or near your veh icle w hen refueling
or fi lling a portab le fue l conta iner.
- For your safety, we strongly recomme nd
that you do not travel with a portable f uel
container in your veh icle. The container, f ull
or empty may leak and cou ld cause a f ire,
especia lly in a cras h .
- If, under exceptional c ircumstances, you
must t ransport a po rtab le fuel conta iner,
p lease observe t he follow ing :
- Never fill a por table fuel co ntainer while it
is anywhere in or on the veh icle (for exam -
p le, in the l uggage compa rtme nt, or on ..,.
