Valet key function
The valet key function prevents unauthorized
persons from opening the glove compart­
ment.

Activating and deactivating the function

When the function is switched on, the buttons for opening the rear lid and glove compart­
ment have no function. The vehicle can be
d riven and locked and unloc ked w ith the mas­
ter key.

Be sure to activate the funct ion befo re
handing over the valet key to someone
else . The va let key only fits the lock in the
driver's door and the ignition lock.
Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
The power locking system in your vehicle in­
corporates the fo llowing functions:

All the doors and the rear lid are locked by the
central locking system when you lock the vehi­
cle. You can set whether generally only the
driver 's door or all doors and the rear lid
should be unlocked when you open the vehicle
in the MMI menu

Unlocking the vehicle
You can unlock the vehicle from outside either
by using the remote control
or by inserting
and turning the key in the driver's door lock .
When you
unlock your vehicle :
- The anti-theft alarm system is deactivated
briefly .
- The vehicle interior lights illuminate for ap­
proximately 30 seconds .
- All turn signal lights will flash twice when
the car is unlocked .
- After un locking the vehicle, you have 60 sec­
onds to open a door or the rear lid. After 60
seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the anti-theft alarm system activates aga in .
The rear lid can be locked or unlocked either
by using the remote control
or by inserting
and turning the key in the driver's door lock.
Unlocking the vehicle with the remote control
will only unlock the rear lid, to open it, the lid
handle needs to be pressed .
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from outside either by
using the remote control
or by inserting and
turning the key in the drivers 's door lock .
When you
lock the veh icle:
- All doors and the rear lid are locked.
- All turn signal lights will flash once when
the car is locked.
- The ant i-theft alarm system is activated.
The horn of the anti-theft alarm system wi ll
sound and the anti-theft alarm system ..,.

• The rear lid un locks automatically and opens
slightly .
• Lift the rear lid.

• Pull the rear lid dow n and a llow it to drop
gently. The lid is then closed automat ica lly

A WARNING
-After closing the rear lid, always pull up
on it to make sure that it is properly
closed. Otherw ise it could open suddenly
when the vehicle is moving.
- To help prevent po isonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle , al­
ways keep the rear lid closed while dr iv­
ing. Never transport objects larger than
those which fit completely into the lug­
gage area, because then the rear lid can­
not be fully closed.
- Never leave you r vehicle unattended es­
peci ally wi th the re ar lid left open. A
child could c rawl into the ca r through the
l u ggage compartment and pull the lid
shut, becom ing trapped and unab le to
get out. To reduce the risk of persona l in­
jury, never let children play in or around
yo ur vehicle . Always keep the rear lid as
well as the vehicle doors closed when not
in use.
- Always ensure that no one is w ith in
range of the rear lid when it is mov ing, in
part icula r close to the h inges -fingers o r
hands can be pinched.

Automatic rear lid/trunk lid operation
Applies to vehicles: with automatic rear lid/trunk lid oper­
ation
The trunk lid can be opened and closed auto­
matically.

- If the vehicle battery charge drops below
a certain level, you can still open or close
the rear lid manua lly, howeve r, you will
need to app ly more force to close it .
- As soon as the electrical connection to
the trailer socket is comp leted on
vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch, or a trailer hitch that was installed
l ater accord ing to factory spec ificat ions,
the automatic rear lid function can only be ope rated v ia the handle in the rear lid.
Rear lid emergency unlocking
If the rear lid cannot be opened , an emergen­
cy release is provided .

doors
The power child safety lock t prevents the
rear doors from being opened from the in ­
side .

It is operated with the two
safety buttons

~ Press th e left and/or right safety b utton to
disab le the rear power w indow(s) and pre­
vent the respect ive rear door from being
opened from the i nside. The LED in the but­
ton will light up when the child safety lock is
turned
on .
~ Press the illum ina ted button again to turn
the chil d safety featu res
off .
When the c hild safety lock is activated, the in ­
te rior door opening lever is inoperat ive; the
doo r ca n only b e opened from th e outside . In
addition, the window reg ulator for that doo r
is a lso inoperative when the child s afety lock
is activa ted.
If the ch ild safety loc k has been ac tivated on
o ne or both sides, the butto ns in the rear for
the Panoramic slid ing su nroof* are disabled .
If the child safety lock has been act ivated on
the left
and on the right side , the rear con­
t ro ls are locked on veh icles with rear a ir-condi­
tio ning *. Dashes " ••• " are show n in t he dis­
plays for the rear climate contro ls , and the
rear ai r-conditioning can on ly be operated
from the climate controls in the cabin

-In order to activate the child safety lock
on the left and the right side, you have to press the two safety buttons in succes­
sion.

Convenience key
Description
A pp lies to vehicles: with Convenie nce key
Access and vehicle operation based on: Mas­
ter key remains in driver 's pocket .
The Convenience key vehicle authorization
system allows
keyless unlocking , locking and
starting of the vehicle . You only have to carry
the master key on your person.
It makes no difference whether the master
key is in your jacket pocket or in your brief
case . As soon as you approach your vehicle,
the Convenience key recognizes the request
for access, checks for authorization and ena­
bles the following functions:
- Unlocking the vehicle~
page 49.
-Locking the vehicle~ page 50.
-Switching on ignition and starting the en -
gine by pressing the
I START! button; the
master key does not have to be in the igni­
tion switch
~page 109.
_& WARNING
- When you lock your vehicle from outside,
nobody- especially children -should re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when you lock the vehicle from the out­
side the windows cannot be opened from
the inside .
- When you leave the vehicle, always re­
move the ignition key and take it with
you. This will prevent passengers (chil­
dren, for example) from accidentally be­
ing locked in the vehicle should they acci-

dentally press the power locking switch
in the front doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
(D Tips
- In order for the Convenience key to func­
tion, you must always carry the master
key with you .
- In order to be able to unlock or lock the
vehicle, the authorized master key must
be within a range of about S feet (l.S
meters) from the door or the rear lid.
- Of course, you can still unlock and lock
your vehicle using the buttons on the
master key . The selector lever must be in
the P position .

Unlocking the vehicle

The doors and the rear lid can be unlocked
without operating the master key .

.,. Take hold of the door handle. The door is un-
locked automatically.
.,. Pull the handle to open the door.
A door is unlocked as soon as you approach
the door handle and the system recognizes an
authorized master key. The vehicle can be un­
locked at any door. The authorized master key
only has to be within a range of about 5 feet (l.S meters) from the respective door.

- Be careful when closing the windows .
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!
- Always remove the ignition key whenever
you leave your vehicle.
- If you lock your vehicle from the outside,
no one, especia lly children, sho uld re­
main in the vehicle .
- Do not stick anything on the windows or
the windshield that may interfere with
the driver's fie ld of vision.

T he driver can operate all windows.
I f the respective switch is pushed or pulled
the w indow will open or close. The power win­
dow switches have a
two -positi on fun ction :

.. Push the sw itch to the fir st stop and hold i t
there unt il the wi ndow has lowered to the
desired position.
.. Push the switch briefly to the
second stop:
the window wi ll automatically open all the
way.
Closing the windows
.. Pull the switch up to the fir st stop and ho ld
it there until the window has risen to the de ­
sired position .

mate cont ro ls, and the rear air-cond ition ing
can only be operated from the climate con­
trols in the cabin ¢page 100.
- I f
only th e left 1±1 sw itch was pressed, the
w indow regu lator in the
left rear do or and
t he buttons in t he rear for the Panoramic
sliding sunroof* are deactivated . In addi­
t ion , the door is locked .
- If
o nly the right[!] switch was pressed, the
w indow regu lator in the
right re ar door and
the buttons in the rear for the Panoramic
sliding sunroof* are deactivated . In addi ­
tion, the door is locked.
T his feature has been provided for the safety
of small children riding in the rear of the ve hi­
cle .
(D Tips
- T he windows can sti ll be opened and
closed for about ten minutes after the
ignition has been t urned off . The powe r
w indows are not shut off unt il one of the
front doors is opened.
- In order to act ivate the child safety lock
on the left and the right side, you have to
press the two safety switches in succes­
sion . Make certa in that the check light
comes on the correspond ing safety

Garage door opener (Homelink)
Description
Applies to vehicles: with garage door opener (Ho melink)

You can activate various systems such as ga­
rage doors, security systems and home light­
ing from inside your vehicle using the garage
door opener (Homelink) . There are three but­
tons for this in the vehicle headliner that can
be in used in place of up to three hand -held
transmitters.
To operate systems using the garage door
opener, the three buttons in the roof headlin­
er must be programmed first .
A WARNING
Make sure no people or objects are in the
immediate vicinity of the equipment when
using or programming the garage door
opener. People can be injured and objects
can be damaged i f they are caught in the
equipment.

you clear the programmed buttons be­
fo re se lling the vehicle.

Programming the button: Part 1 with the

1. Switch the ignition on.
2 . Press and hold both outer buttons in the
roof headliner

onds) . This procedure clears the standard
codes that were set at the factory and
does
n ot need to be repeated again to
program the other buttons.
3 . Briefly press the button on the roof head ­
liner that you would like to program.
4 . Wait unti l the LED @ beg ins to b link. Pro­
gramming mode is active for 5 minutes.
5 . Move in front of you r veh icle while ho ld­
ing the original remote control for the
system that would like to program to a
button in the roof headliner.

6 . Hold the remote control towards the left
headlight and the radiator grille

7. Press and hold the remote control until
the turn signals on your vehicle blink. This
may take up to 30 seconds .
8 . If the emergency flashers blink three
times, the programming was successful.
If the emergency f lashe rs on ly blink one
time , the S minute time limit fo r the pro­
gramming has ended or the programming
was not successfu l. Repeat the program­
ming from the third step, or try changing
the distance to the bumper.
9 . If the garage door or other system does
not open us ing the buttons in the roof
headliner even though the programming
was successful, the system may use a roll ­
ing code instead of a fixed code .

The other two buttons in the roof headliner
can be programmed according to the instruc­
tions above . Beg in with the third step .
Erasin g button p rogramming
The programmed bu ttons cannot be erased
individually . They must all be erased together .
Reprogram the buttons if necessary.

.,. Press and hold both outer buttons in the
roof headliner until the LED@ starts to
blink (after about 10 seconds).
R eprogrammin g the button s
.,. Switch the ignition on.
.,. To reprogram an individua l button, press
and hold the b utton until the LED@ starts
to blink slowly (after about 20 seconds) . Re­
lease the button immediately . Programming
mode is act ive for 5 minutes .

Rolling code programming is also needed for
some systems.
