parking brake.
- Should the engine stall, depress the
brake pedal immediately or engage the
parking brake.
- In order to prevent the vehicle from roll­
ing back unintentionally when starting in
stop-and-go traffic, keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few seconds before driv­
ing off .
- When you leave the vehicle - even if only
briefly -, sw itch off the ignition and
make sure to remove the ignition key . Al­
so engage the
park ing br ake to prevent
your vehicle from rolling u nintentionally.
Th is parti cularly applies if chi ldren are
left in the vehicle - danger of accident!
Cruise control

A WARNING
- Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on. You are
always responsible for your speed and
the distance between your veh icle and
other veh icles .
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog , gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
p laning) - risk of accident.
- Turn off the cruise control temporarily
when en ter ing turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones .
- Please note that inadvertently "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is because the cruise control is overridden
by the driver's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control when driving
off-road o r on unpaved roads. The cruise
control is intended for use only when the
vehicle is being operated on paved roads,
and is not suitable for use off-road or on
unpaved roads .
(D Tips
The cruise control cannot maintain a con­
stant speed when driving downhill. The ve­
hicle will accelerate under its own weight .
Downshift to a lower gear or use the
brakes to slow down.

• To increase/decrease the speed quickly, hold
the lever in the
0 10 direction unti l the de­
s ired speed is displayed.
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed , e .g. if you want to
pass someone . The speed yo u saved earlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler ­
ator pedal.
If , however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes ,
the cruise contro l will turn off temporarily .
The symbol will go out but the saved speed
will be retained.
Presetting your speed
You con preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
• Turn on the ignition.
• Pull lever into position

• Press the lever in the 0 or O direction to
increase or decrease you r speed .
• Release the lever to save that speed .
This funct ion makes it possible, for example,
to save the speed you want before driving on
the highway . Once o n the hig hway, activate
the cruise contro l by pulling the lever toward
(D .
Switching the system off
Temporary deactivation

brake and take evasive action to avoid
collisions and other accident situations.
- Never allow the closing speed between
you and other vehicles to be so high that
the adaptive cruise control may not be
able to slow your vehicle safely. If clos­
ing speed is too high, you must apply the
brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a
rear-end crash .
- Never rest your foot on the accelerator peda l, especia lly when the adaptive
cruise control is be ing used. Pressu re on
the accelerator w ill override the ACC
braking function and prevent the brakes
from being applied when ACC detects a situation when the brakes must be ap­
plied.
- Never use adaptive cruise contro l when
you cannot drive safe ly at a steady
speed, including on city streets, on wind­
ing roads or when road conditions are
poor (for example, on ice, gravel, in fog,
heavy rain or on wet roads that increase
the risk of hydroplaning) .
- The radar sensor 's
vision can be reduced
by rain, snow and heavy road spray .
T hese and sim ilar condit ions can prevent
vehicles up a head from being accurately
detected and in some cases they may not
be detected at al l. Do not use ACC when
the radar sensors cannot accurately de­
tect vehicles moving ahead of yo u in traf­
fic .
- Always turn off adaptive cruise contro l
when entering turn lanes , exit lanes and
construction zones or in similar situa­
t ions because the vehicle will automati­
cally accelerate to the stored speed when
the road ahead is clear.
- To prevent unintended operation, always
switch ACC off when it is not be ing used .
(D Tips
-For safety reasons, the stored speed is
deleted when the ignition is turned off .
- The E lectronic Stab ilizat ion Control (ESC)
i s automatically turned on when the
adaptive cruise control is turned on. You cannot switch the ESC into offroad mode
w hile the adaptive cruise contro l is
t u rned on

-Damage caused by accidents and some
mino r collisions can affect the radar sen­
sor settings and cause the system to
malf unction or switch off completely.
- The radar sensor cover is heated. In win ­
ter conditions, you should st ill check be­
fore dr iv ing to make sure it is free of ice
and snow. If necessary, clean the area
near the radar sensor carefully

How does adaptive cruise control work?

Vehicles traveling ahead are detected with
the aid of a radar sensor.

trol features and inattent ion can lead to an
accident causing ser ious personal injury.
- It is dangerous to use the "RES UME" fea­
ture when the prev iously set speed is too
high for existing road, traff ic or weather
conditions.

Automatic
transmission
tiptronic
Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected. The power is transferred
by a torque converter .
When a
mode rate d riv in g s ty le is used, the
transmission selects the most econom ica l
driving mode. It w ill then change up early and
delay the downshifts to g ive better fuel econ­
omy.
T he transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
spo rty driving sty le characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can a lso select the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ) ¢ page 142.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
T he Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows:

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
sitions when the ignition is tu rned on . You
must press the brake pedal and the release
button to select another position . As a re ­
minder to the driver, the following warning
appears in the instrument cluster display
when the selector is in P and N:
When stationary apply brake pedal while se­
lecting gear
The Automatic Shift Lock only functions when
the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below
1 mph (2 km/h).
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automat ic Shift Lock is automatically deacti­
vated in the N position.
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when it is moved through
the N position (going from R to D). The lock­
ing element will lock the selector lever if the
lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 1 second, without the brake ped­
al being pressed .
Release button
The release button on the selector lever pre­
vents the lever from being accidentally shifted
into certain positions. Pressing this button de­
activates the selector lever lock. Depending
on the direction of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different positions . The positions are
highlighted in the illustration

Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition
unless the selector lever is in the P park posi­
tion. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P position.
