~ Check the label on the inside of the fuel fi ll­
er flap to determine if the vehicle must be
fueled with gasoline or diesel fuel.
Refuelling procedure
~ Insert the fuel nozzle from the gasol ine
pump into the fue l filler neck as far as it will
go.
~ Se lect a medium refuelling rate so that the
no zzle switches off automatica lly when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
~ After filling your tank, twist the fuel fi ller
cap clockwise as far as it will go.
~ Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spi lling or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel fi ller cap properly
and comp lete ly. An improperly closed fuel fill­
er cap may also cause the M IL lamp

to come on (only vehicles with gasoline en­
gine) .
A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns.
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injuries .
- Failure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fully into the fuel filler neck could cause
fuel to spray out of f iller neck or to over­
flow. Fuel spray and ove rflow ing fuel can
cause a fire.
- Never use a cellular telephone wh ile re­
fueling. The electromagnetic radiation
can cause sparks that can ignite fue l va­
pors and cause a fire.
- Never get back into you r vehicle while re­
fueling. If in exceptiona l circumstances
you must get back in your vehicle whi le
refueling, make certain that yo u close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill­
er nozzle again. Static electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.

-Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near your vehicle when refu­
eling or filling a portable fuel conta iner .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel with a portable
fuel container in your vehicle . The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compart­
ment, or on the trunk). Stat ic electrici­
ty can build up while filling and can ig­
nite fuel vapors causing a fire .
- Always place a portable fuel conta iner
on the ground before filling.
- Always keep the filler no zzle complete­
ly inside the portable container before
and dur ing filling .
- If filling a portable container made of
metal, the f iller nozzle must always be
in contact with the conta iner . This will
help prevent static electric ity from d is­
charging and cause a fire .
- Never spill fue l inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
highly flammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­
cia l laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel containers.
- Make certain the fuel container meets
in dustry standa rds (ANSI/ AS TM
F852-86).
(D Note
If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
shou ld be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated nozzle
switches off automat ica lly for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fuel because fuel may spill out. In •

addition, the expans ion space in the fuel
tank will be filled -causing the fuel to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol­
lute the environment.
@ Tips
- Running your engine while refuelling
may cause vapors to escape or even
cause fue l to spill out of the tank. This
would then shut off the fuel nozzle be­
fore the tank is full.
- Do not refuel your vehicle w ith the igni­
tion turned on. The fuel gauge may oth­
erwise not ind icate the correct fuel level
after refuell ing.
- Diesel veh icles* are equipped with a die­
sel misfueling protector. It allows the
vehicle to be fueled only w ith a diesel
fuel pump nozzle. A worn or damaged
nozzle or a nozzle that is too small may
not be able to open the diesel misfueling
protector. If this is the case, try turning
the nozz le before inserting it in the fue l
filler neck, use a different fuel pump or
see your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized repair facility for assistance.
Unlocking the fuel filler flap by hand
You con open the fuel filler flop by hand if the
power locking system should foil.

Selective catalytic
reduction
General information
Applies to vehicles: with diesel engine
On vehicles with selective catalytic reduction,
an urea solution (AdBlue) is injected into the
exhaust system before a nitrogen oxide cata­
lytic converter to reduce nitrogen emissions.
The Ad Blue is stored in a separate tank in the
vehicle. The Ad Blue usage accounts for ap­ proximately 0.5% to 1.2% of the diesel fuel
that is used .
You must refill the Ad Blue or have it ref illed
by your authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop as soon as the Ad Blue refill mes­
sage appears in the instrument cluster

&_ WARNING ~
Failure to heed AdBlue refill information in
the instrument cluster can prevent the ve­
hicle from being started and dr iven.
If the
vehicle cannot be driven and an emergency
arises, personal injury can occur.
- Always have the AdBlue tank refilled we ll

The AdBlue fi ller tube is located near the die­
sel filler tube . A lways add 1 gallon (3 .8 liters)
of AdBlue (two bottles). This is the m inimum
amount requ ired to ensure the system detects
the ref illing a nd to start the engine . The Ad Bl­
ue tank capac ity is approximate ly 6 ga llons
(2 3 liters) .

• Press ligh tly against the bottom of t he bot ­
tle @to empty it. Continue pressing the
bottom of the bottle unt il it is empty or un ­
til f lu id stops flow ing into the tank.
• Turn the bottle to t he left w ithout pressing
on the bottom .
Closing the filler tube
• Turn the cap clockwise on the filler tu be
w ith the l ug wrench until you hear it t ighten
completely .
• Close the tank cover.
After filling
The vehicle must be driven . The system may
take up to two minutes to detect that the
AdB lue has been f illed.
• If the re was no Ad Blue left in the tank and a
range of
O mi (0 km ) was displayed in the
instrument cluster, switch the ig nition on
for about 15 seconds before start ing the en­
gine.

Ad B lue can irritate the s kin, eyes and res-
p ira to ry system . If there is contac t wit h
the fluid, flush immediat ely with plenty of
w at er. Co nsult a phys icia n if necessa ry.

- Only use Ad B lue that conforms to the
standard ISO 22241-1. Do not mix any
add itives w ith th e AdBl ue and do no t di­
l ut e it with water.

Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment .
Whenever you must perform any wo rk in the
engine compartment, for example checking
and filling different fluids, th ere is a risk of
injury, burns and accidents. To pr event per­
sonal injury alway s observe the following

If you must add coolant, use a mixture of wa­
ter and coolant additive. Mixing the coolant
addit ive with distilled water is recommended .

-Before winter sets in, have the coolant
checked to see if the coolant additive in
your vehicle is suffic ient to meet the cli ­
mate cond itions . Th is is especially impor­
tant if you live in a region where the w in­
te r is extremely cold. If necessary, in­
crease the proport ion of coolant additive
to 60% .
- When adding coolan t addi tive to you r
cooling system , remember:
- We recommend using only coolant ad­ ditive G12 ++ or G13 for your vehicle.
This coo lant additive is available at au­
thorized Aud i dealers . Other types of
antifreeze can significantly reduce cor­
rosion protection . Th e resu lting co rro­
sion c an cause a loss of coo la nt and se­
r ious engine damage.
- Do not add a ny type of radiator leak sea l­
ant to your veh icle's engine coo lant.
Adding rad iator repair fluid may adverse ­
l y affect the function and performance of
your cooling system and could result in damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

To obtain an accu rate reading, the engine
must be switched off.
The expansion ta nk in your vehicle i s equ ipped
with an electric coolant level sensor .
When the coolant leve l is too low, the warning

page 32 will
blink unti l you add coolant and the level has
been restored to normal. Even though there is
an electric coo lant level senso r, we still rec­
ommend you check the coolant level from
t ime to t ime .

Coolant lo ss
Coolant loss may indicate a l ea k in t he cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cool ­
ing system should be inspected immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer. It is not
enough merely to add coolant.
I n a
se ale d system, losses can occur only if
the boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as
a result of overheating.
A WARNING
The cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of scald­
ing from hot coolant by following these
steps.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid and steam by covering the
cap with a large, thick rag .
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in
a counter-clockwise direction wh ile ap­
plying light, downward pressure on the
top of the cap .
- To avoid being burned, do not spill ant i­
freeze or coolant on the exhaust system
or hot eng ine parts. Under certain condi­
t io ns, the ethy lene g lycol in engine cool­
an t ca n ca tch f ire.
0 Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak seal­
ant to your vehicle's eng ine coolant. Add­
ing radiato r repair fluid may adve rsely af­
fect the function and performance of your
cooling system and could res ult in damage
not covered by your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty .
Adding coolant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.

We recommend using only coo lant add it ive
G12 ++, G13 or in an emergency G12 +. Do
not
use a different add itive. In an emergency use
plain water until you can get the correct addi­
t ive and can restore the correct ratio . This
shou ld be done as soon as poss ib le.
If you have lost a considerab le amount of
coolant, the n you should add cold ant ifreeze
and co ld water on ly when the eng ine is cold .
Always use
new engine coolant when refilling.
Do not fi ll coo lant above the "MAX" mark. Ex­
cess coolant will be forced o ut through the
pressure relief valve in the cap when the en­
gine becomes hot.
A WARNING
- The cooling system is under pressure and

If the brake fluid level falls considerably be­
low the "MIN" mark, the brake warning/indi­
cator light (U .S . mode ls:
11111 , Canadian
models: .) will come on

<=> page 32. Do not continue to operate the ve­
h icle . The complete brake system should be
thoroughly checked by an authorized Aud i
dea ler or qualified workshop and the cause
corrected. If the brake fluid level is too low,
the brake warning/indicator light will illum i­
nate . Contact an authorized Aud i dealer

The brake fluid rese rvoir is located unde r­
neath the cove r.
Changing brake fluid
Hove the broke fluid changed by on experi­
enced technician.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the a ir . If
the water content in the brake fluid is too
h igh , corrosion in the brake system may result
after a per iod of t ime. The bo iling po int of the
brake fluid wi ll also decrease considerably and
decrease braking performance.
Therefore, the brake flu id must be changed
e ver y tw o year s. Always use new b rake fluid
which conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle
Standard "FMVSS 1 16 DO T 4".
The brake flu id reservo ir can be difficult to
reach, therefore, we recommend that you
have the brake f luid changed by you r author­
ized
Audi dea ler. Your dea ler has the correct
too ls, the right brake fluid and the know -how
to do this for you.
A WARNING
- Brake fluid is poisonous . It must be stor­
ed only i n the closed orig inal container
o ut of the reach of children!
- Brake fa ilure can result from old or inap­
propriate b rake fluid. Observe these pre­
caut ions: -
Use only brake fluid that meets SAE
specification
J 1703 and conforms to
Federa l Motor Vehicle Standard 116.
Always check with your authorized Audi
dealer to make sure you are using the
correct brake fluid . The correct type of
brake f lu id is also ind icated on the
brake flu id reservoir.
- T he brake fluid must be new. Heavy use
of the bra kes ca n cause a vapo r lock if
the b rake fluid is left in the system too
l ong . This can seriously affect the effi ­
c iency of the brakes as well as your
safety. This co uld resu lt in an accident.
(D Note
Bra ke fluid will damage the paint of you r
vehicle .
(® For the sake of the environment
Because of the p rob lem of p roper disposal
of b ra ke fluid as well as the spec ial too ls
r equired and the necessary expertise, we
re commend that yo u have the brake fluid
changed by yo ur authorized Aud i dea ler.
Battery
General information
U nder normal ope rat ing cond itions , the bat­
tery in yo ur Audi does not need any ma inte­
nance. With
high o utside tempe ra tur es or
l ong dai ly drives we recommend that you have
the e lectrolyte level checked by an authorized
Audi dealer or qualif ied workshop. The elec­
trolyte level should also be checked each time
the battery is charged
<=> page 268.
Have the battery checked when yo u take your
vehicle in for service. You are well advised to replace a battery that is o lder than 5 years .
With certain types of airbag deployment, the battery is disconnected from the veh icle elec­
trical system for safety reasons<=>.&

Disconne cting the batt ery t erminals
Some vehicle functions (power w indow regu ­
l ators, for example) are lost if the battery ter­
minals are disconnected . These functions have
to be re learned after the battery terminals are
connected again. To prevent this, the battery
should only be disconnected from the vehicle
electrical system when absolutely necessary
for repairs .
Vehicle s not driven fo r lo ng period s
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of several days or weeks, electrical compo­
nents are gradually cut back or switched off .
This reduces energy consumption and main­
tains starting capab ility over a longer per iod
¢ page 228 .
Take into consideration that when you unlock
your vehicle, some convenience functions,
such as the inter ior lights or the power seat
adjustment, may not be available . The con­
ve nience funct ions w ill be available again
when yo u turn on the ignition and start the
engine.
Winter op eration
During the winter months, battery capacity
tends to decrease as tempe ratures d rop . This
i s because more powe r is also consumed while
start ing, and the headl ights, rea r window de ­
fogger, etc., are used more often.
Avo id unnecessary power consumption, par­
ticularly in c ity t raffic or when t rave ling on ly
short d istances. Let you r autho rized Aud i
dealer check the capacity of the vehicle bat­
tery before winter sets in ¢
page 268. A well
charged battery wi ll not only prevent starting
prob lems when the weather is cold, but will
also last longer .
If your vehicle is left standing for severa l
weeks at extremely low temperat ures, the
veh icle battery should be removed and
stored where it will not freeze. This will
prevent it from bei ng damaged and hav ing
to be replaced.
