Warm and cold Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the air in the vehicle interior. It
is the most effective when the windows and pan
oramic sliding sunroof* are closed . If there is a
build-up of heat inside the vehicle, ventilation
can help to speed up the cooling proc ess.
In all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
blower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera
ture.
Condensation from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water under the vehicle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filter removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the air.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the
intervals specified in your Warranty & Mainte
nance booklet, so that the air conditioner can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air pollution , the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than specified in your Audi War
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your authorized Audi Service Advisor for advice.
Key coded settings
The climate control settings are automatically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use .

Reduced visibility is dangerous and can cause
accidents.
- For safe driving it is very important that all
windows be free of ice, snow and condensa
tion.

- Completely familiarize yourself with the
proper use and function of the heating and
ventilation system and especially how to de
fog and defrost the windows .
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshield first, using the heat
ing and ventilation system . The washer solu
tion may freeze on the windshield and re
duce visibility .
(D Note
-If you suspect that the air conditioner has
been damaged, switch the system off to
avoid further damage and have it inspected
by a qualified dealership.
- Repairs to the Audi air conditioner require
special technical knowledge and special
tools. Contact an authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
By reducing the amount of fuel you use, you
also reduce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the air.
(D Tips
-Keep the air intake slots (in front of the
windshield) free from ice, snow and debris
in order to maintain the proper function of
the climate control system.
- The energy management system may switch
the seat heating* or rear window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are available
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- The air flowing out of the vents and
throughout the vehicle's entire interior is
discharged at the rear of the vehicle. Make
sure that the outlet slots are not covered by clothing, etc.

Operation
We recommend pressing the IAUTO I button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C) .

Press the bu ttons to turn the funct ions on or off.
Use the d ials to adjust the temperature, the
blower speed and the air distr ibution . The L ED in
a button w ill light up when the function is
switched on . The settings are disp layed for a few
seconds in the radio or M MI* d isplay.
The driver and front passenger side can be ad
justed separate ly . The settings are also d isp layed
i n the climate control system disp lay .
IOFF ! Switching the climate control syst em
on/off
The IOFFI b utton switches the climate control
system on o r off. It also switches on when you
p ress the knob . Airflow from o utside is blocked
when the climate con trol system is switched off.
IAIC ! Switching cooling mode on /off
The air is not cooled and humidity is not removed
when cooling mode is switched off. This can
cause fog o n the windows. Cooling mode
switches off autom atically when the o utside tem
pe rat ure is be low zero.

In recirculation mode, the a ir ins ide the ve hicle is
cir culated and fi ltered. This prevents the u nfil
tered air outside the vehicle from enteri ng the

Automatic mode maintains a cons tant tempera
ture inside the vehicle. Air temperature, airf low
and air distrib ution are contro lled automatically.
Ad justing the temp erature
Temperatures between 60 ° F (+16 °C) and 84 °F
( + 28 °C) can be set. Outs ide of this range,
low or
high will appear in the radio or MM I* display. At
bot h of these settings , the climate control sys
tem runs contin uous ly at maximum cooling or
heating power. There is no temperature regu la
t ion.
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can adjust the airflow manua lly to suit your
needs. To have the ai rflow regulated automatical
l y, press the
IAU TO I button .
~ Adjusting the air di stribution
You can manu ally select the vents where the a ir
will flow. To have the air dist ribution regulated
automatica lly, press the

[i] Adjusting seat heating*
Pressing the but ton switches the seat heating on
at the highest setting (level 3). The LEDs indicate
the temperat ure leve l. To red uce the tempera
ture, press the button again. To switch the seat heating off, press the button repeatedly until the
LED turns off.
After
10 minutes, the seat heating automatica lly
switches from leve l
3 to leve l 2.

Press ing the button switches the seat ventilation
on at the highest setting ( leve l
3). The LEDs ind i
cate the venti lation level. To reduce the venti la
tion level, press the button aga in. To switch the
seat ventilation off, press the button repeatedly
until the L ED turns off.

The windshield and s ide windows are defrosted
or cleared of condensation as quickly as possible.
The maximum amo unt of air flows mainly from
the vents below the windshield. Recirculation
mode switches off. The temperature should be
set to 72 °F (22 °C) or higher. The temperature is
cont ro lled automatically .
The

The rear window heater only operates when the
engine is running. It switches off automatically
after a few m inutes, depending on the outs ide
temperature .
To prevent the rear window heater from switch
ing off automatically, press and hold the
!lliD REARI
button for more than 2 seconds. This rema ins
stored unt il the ignition is switched off.
Air vent s
You can open and close the center and rea r air
vents using the thumbwheels. The levers adjust
the direction of the airflow from the vents .
You can adjust the air temperatu re in the rear by
turning the thumbwheel toward the red side to

make it wa rmer or towa rd the blue side to make
it coo ler .
A WARNING
- Do not use the recircu lation for extended
periods of time. The windows could fog up
since no fresh air can enter the vehicle. If
the windows fog up, press the air rec ircula
tion button again immed iately to sw itch off
the air recircu lation function or se lect de
frost.
- Individuals w ith reduced sensitivity to pain
or temperatu re could develop burns when
using the seat heating* function . T o reduce
the r isk of in ju ry, these indiv iduals should
no t use seat hea ting.

the seats, do not kneel on the sea ts or place
h eavy loads on a sma ll are a of the seat .

Automatic recirculation
When switched on, automat ic recirculation con
trols the recirculation mode automatically . If the

Synchronization
When synchronization is switched on, the same
settings are applied to both the driver and front passenger, except for the seat heating/ventila
t ion* . Synchron izat ion switches off when you ad
just the settings on the front passenge r's side.
You can also switch synchronization on by press -
i ng and holding the knob on t he d river 's side . ..,_
Driving

The speed is kept constant by modifying engine
power or through an active brake intervention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around
you when the cruise control is in operation .
You are always responsible for your speed
and the distance between your vehicle and
other vehicles.
- For reasons of safety, cruise control should
not be used in the city, in stop-and-go traf
fic, on twisting roads and when road condi
tions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel,
heavy rain and hydroplaning) -you could
have an accident.
- Switch the cruise control off temporarily
when driving in turning lanes, highway exits
or in construction zones.
- Please note that unconsciously "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
cruise control not to brake. This is due to the
control system being overridden by the driv
er's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control when driving
off-road or on unpaved roads . The cruise
control is intended for use only when the ve
hicle is being operated on paved roads, and
is not suitable for use off-road or on un
paved roads.
- If a brake system malfunction such as over heating occurs when the cruise control sys
tem is switched on, the braking function in
the system may be switched off. The other
cruise control functions remain active as
long as the indicator
light[ij;11 )~1~ (US mod
el)/lil (Canadian model) is on.

Changing speed

You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your speed, e .g . if you want to pass
someone . The speed you saved earlier will re
sume as soon as you let off of the accelerator
pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
S mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes, the
cruise control will be turned off temporarily. The
green symbol in the display turns white, the
saved speed is retained.
Pre-selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.

This function makes it possible, for example, to

The tiptronic mode can be selected either with
the vehicle stationary or on the move.

T he transmission automatically shifts up or dow n
before critical engine speed is reached.
T he transmission only allows manual shifting
when the engine speed is withi n the permitted
range.
@ Tips
- When you shift into the next lower gear, the
transmission will downshift only when there
is no possibility of over-revving the engine.
- When the kick-down comes on, the trans
mission will shift down to a lower gear, de
pending on vehicle and engine speeds.
- Tiptronic is ino perative when the transmis
sion is in the fail-safe mode .
- Hybrid drive*: electric d riving is not possible
in tiptronic mode.
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration .
When you depress the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point, the automatic transmission
downsh ifts into a lower gear, depending on vehi
cle speed and engine speed . The upshift into the
next higher gear takes pla ce once the maximum
specified eng ine speed is reached .
A WARNING
-Please note that the drive wheels can spin if
kick-down is used on a smooth slippery road -
there is a risk of skidding.
Transmission malfunction
rm Transmission: Press brake pedal and select
gear again.
Press the brake pedal and select the desired se
lector lever position again. You can then cont inue
driving .

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
The Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) reinfor
ces driver safety. It reduces the risk of slipping
and improves driving stability. ESC detects criti
cal s ituations such as the vehicle oversteering
and understeering or the wheels sp inning. The
veh icle is stab ilized by applying the brakes or re
ducing engine torque. Once the ESC is act ive, the
indicator light
m blinks in the instrument clus
ter.
The fol low ing systems a re integrated in the ESC:
Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
ABS prevents the wheels from locking up when
brak ing . The vehicle can still be steered even dur
ing hard braking. Apply steady pressure to the
brake pedal. Do not pump the pedal. A pulsing in
the brake pedal indicates that the system is help
ing you to brake the vehicle.
Brake assist system
The brake assist system can decrease braking d is
tance . It increases braking power when the dr iver
presses the brake pedal quick ly in emergency s it
uations. You must press and hold the brake pedal
unti l the situation is over. In vehicles w ith adap
tive cruise control*, the brake assist system is
more sensitive if the distance detected to the ve
hicle ahead is too small.
Anti-slip regulation (ASR)
ASR reduces engine power when the drive whee ls
begin to spin and adapts the force to the road
conditions. This makes it easier to start, acceler
ate and drive up hills.
Smart Technology
Electronic differential lock (EDL)
The EDL brakes whee ls that are spinning and
trans fers the drive power to the other whee ls.
This function is not avai lable at higher speeds .
In extreme cases, EDL automatically sw itches off
to help keep the brake on the braked wheel from
overheating. EDL will switch on again automati
ca lly when conditions have returned to normal.
Steering recommendation
The ESC helps to stabilize the vehicle by changing
the steering torque.
On vehicles with dynam ic steering*, ESC helps
stab ilize the steer ing in crit ical situat ions .
Selective wheel torque control
Selective wheel torque control is used when driv
ing on curves. The front wheel on the inside of
the curve or both wheels on the inside of the
curve are braked select ively as needed. This al
lows more precise driving in curves. The applica
ble system may not activate when driving in wet
o r snowy conditions .
A WARNING
-
-The ESC and its integrated systems cannot
overcome the laws of physics. This is espe
cially important on slippery or wet roads. If
the systems begin acting to stabilize your
vehicle, you should immediately change
your speed to match the road and traffic conditions . Do not let the increased safety
provided by these systems tempt you to
take risks. Doing so will increase the risk of a
loss of vehicle control, collision and serious
personal injuries.
- Always adapt your speed to road, traffic and
weather conditions. The risk of los ing con
trol of the vehicle increases when driving
too fast, especially through curves and on
slippery or wet roads, and when driving too
close to vehicles up ahead . The ESC and its
integrated systems cannot a lways prevent
coll isions - there is st ill a risk of acc idents!
- Always accelerate with special care on even,
smooth surfaces such as those that are wet
or covered with ice and snow. The drive

electrical energy is not being used than is being
generated and ensures an optimal state of
charge for the battery.

- But even energy management cannot neg
ate the limits of physics. Consider that the power and life of a battery are limited.

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining start
ing capability.
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traffic and during the co ld time of
year. Abundant electrical energy is required, but
only a little is generated. It is also critical if the
engine is not running and electrical components
are turned on. In this instance energy is being
consumed but none is being generated.
It is in precisely these situations that you wi ll no
tice energy management actively regulating the
d istribution of energy.
Vehicl e stands fo r an e xte nded p eriod
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of
several days or weeks , e lectrica l components are
gradually cut back or switched off . This reduces
energy consumption and maintains starting ca
pability over a longer period . Some of the con
ve nience funct ions may not operate, such as the
interior lights or the power seat adjustment. The
conven ience functions wi ll be available again
when you switch on the ignit io n and start the en
g ine.
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the
engine turned off or use other MMI* functions ,
the battery is being d ischarged .
If starting capability is jeopardized due to energy
consumption, a message appears in the radio or MMI* display . The message indicates that the
system w ill be switched off automatically in a

moment . If you wish to continue using the func
tions, you have to start the engine.
With the engin e running
Although electrical energy is generated when the
vehicle is be ing driven, the battery can become
discharged . This happens mostly when litt le en
ergy is being generated and a great dea l con
s u med and the batte ry's state of charge is not
opt imal.
T o bring the energy ba lance back into equilibri
u m, consumers which require especially large
amounts of ene rgy are temporarily cut back or
switched off. Heating systems in particu lar re
quire a great deal of energy. If you notice, for ex
amp le, that the heated seats* or the heated rear
window are not heating, they have been tempo
rar ily cut back or switched off . These systems w il l
be available again as soon as the energy ba lance
has been restored.
You w ill also notice that engi ne idle speed has
been increased slightly . T h is is normal and not a
cause for concern. By increasing eng ine idle
speed the additional energy requi red is generated
and the battery is ch arged .

-Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust man i
fold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or heat shields. During driving, the substance
used for undercoating could overheat and
cause a fire.
Q) Note
- Be aware that just one tank filling with lead
ed
fuel will already seriously degrade the
performance of the catalytic converter .
- Do not exceed the correct engine oil level
¢page 225.
-Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
completely empty . The engine could misfire.
Unburned fuel could also get into the ex
haust system and this could cause the cata
l ytic converter to overheat.
- Do not turn off the ignit ion while the veh icle
i s mov ing .
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle un
der these cond it ions, as otherwise fuel can
reach the catalyt ic converte r. This cou ld re
su lt in overheating of the converter, requir
i ng its replacement.
- To assure efficient operat ion of the Emission
Control System:
- Have your veh icle maintained properly and
in accordance with the service recommen
dations in your Warranty
& Maintenance
booklet.
- Lack of proper maintenance as well as im
proper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the em ission control system
and could lead to damage.
@) For the sake of the environment
Even when the Em ission Control System is op
erating properly, the exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some op
erating states. This depends on the sulfu r
content of the fuel being used. Using a differ
ent brand of fuel may help, or filling the tank
wit h lead-free super grade gasoline.
Dri ving and th e en vir onm ent
Diesel particulate filter
Applies to veh icles: w ith diesel en gine
The diese l particu late filter filters nearly all of
the soot particles out of the exhaust. The filter
cleans itself automatica lly under norma l driving
conditions. If the filter cannot clean itself (for ex
ample, because you are only driving short distan
ces), the filter becomes clogged with soot and
the
II symbol for the diese l particulate filter il
luminates

materia ls such as grass or leaves because
the high temperature of the diesel particu
late filter could start a fire .

-Do not app ly an underbody protectant in the
exhaust system area or a fire cou ld start.
Avoid damaging the
vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps, etc., make certain that low
lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged.
This is especially true for vehicles with low-slung
chassis (sports chassis)* and fully loaded
vehicles.
Economical and environ
mentally-friendly driving
General
Your personal style of driving will determine the
economy of your vehicle, as well as exhaust and
noise levels.
Fuel economy, environmenta l impact, and wear
on your engine, brakes and tires largely depend
on three factors:
- your pe rsonal d riving style
- operating conditions
- technical limitat ions
